What is Mt. Gox Mobile?
Mt. Gox Mobile (http://mtgoxlive.com/mobile) is a hosted mobile bitcoin wallet and bitcoin trader for Android™ 2.1-2.9, 3.2 and iOS 4.0+ (Requires Cydia/.deb).  The application has been tested across many Android devices and ROMS, including but not limited to HTC Sense, Cyanogen, and MIUI (http://miui.us) as well as several iOS devices including iOS 4.0.1 and iOS simulators.

What does Mt. Gox Mobile do?
  • Multi-Currency Support
  • View your balance and ticker data
  • Buy Bitcoins with USD
  • Sell Bitcoins for USD
  • Send Bitcoins to a btc.to (http://btc.to) address
  • Send Bitcoins to a bitcoin address
  • Create USD Vouchers and QR Codes™
  • Create BTC Vouchers and QR Codes
  • Scan QR Codes and Redeem USD or BTC Vouchers
  • Review your recent history
  • Review the closest depth
  • Watch Mt. Gox Live (http://mtgoxlive.com/orders)
  • Manage multiple profiles/accounts
  • Control access rights for accounts
  • ... and plenty more to come!

Ok, but what are some real life use scenarios?
1. Use Mt. Gox Mobile to pay for your next meal.
2. Use Mt. Gox Mobile to day trade, all day, every day, wherever you are.
3. Use Mt. Gox Mobile to receive BTC and USD payments via QR Code/Voucher.
4. Use Mt. Gox Mobile to send/pay BTC to someone who doesn't have Mt. Gox (send to btc.to/bitcoin address)
5. Use Mt. Gox Mobile as a virtual payment solution to allow each and every one of your employees to process payments from wherever they are.

Mt. Gox Mobile is your complete solution for your bitcoin wallet/payment and bitcoin trading needs while on the go... and now, Mt. Gox Mobile is a complete payment processing solution for online and brick and mortar merchants including those in food, retail, convenience, fuel, and other industries.

I need this, but, is it secure?
Mt. Gox Mobile will never ask for your username and password.  Mt. Gox Mobile utilizes the secured HTTP API built by Mt. Gox which enables applications to utilize a secure method of identification and application pairing.  All communications are encrypted over HTTPS (SSL) and are signed using a secret key which is used to create a unique SHA-512 hash which must then be verified.  Further, the secret key is saved for future sessions using AES encryption.

There's nothing plain about that text.  :D

To add an additional layer of security, Mt. Gox allows anyone to revoke any application's access via the user settings page at any time.  This includes on a per rights basis (support within the client coming very soon!).

Ok!  That's just what I needed.  How do I get started?
Mt. Gox Mobile is currently available for download for Android devices from the application's website, http://mtgoxlive.com/mobile, as well as the Android Market.  This application is available for iOS 4.0.1+ jailbroken devices through Cydia on the BigBoss repo.

It's downloaded, but I just see this Activation Key and no fields for my username and password?
Go to http://mtgoxlive.com/mobile and review the setup instructions found on the "Download" link.

(Setup TL;dr)
Web: Login to Mt. Gox -> Settings -> Mobile Application -> Select all -> Grant
Mobile: Scan the QR code that shows up after grant -> Choose a password

If I drop my phone could someone move all my BTC? Or does the software lock out after a set time?

The software itself does not lock out after a set time. This is an excellent question and its something that will absolutely be included in the next update in < 48 hours.  You can currently revoke the API access through your Mt. Gox settings.  Until tomorrow, I would strongly suggest setting a timeout/password on your phone itself or always remember to logout.

Please keep the feedback, questions and comments coming!

edit: time for update, there was a lot more feedback/requests than was anticipated. :)

Great app! Thanks for sharing. Two issues though:

1. I tried to install the app on my Transformer tablet and the GUI isn't adapted to the higher resolution. Any ETA on when we can hope for a fix? The graphs and depth info gets really small.

2. When I exited the app on my Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101, and tried to relogin again, there is no "submit" button or equivalent to submit my password.

And to those who wonder where the "revoke" permissions button is: You have to reload the settings web page for the revoke button to become visible.

EDIT1:
3. Please make it possible to rotate the phone and/or tablet, and that the screen also rotates. On small phones' touch screens, it is easier to hit the correct buttons when the phone is in landscape rotation.

4. You could make the single "choose your password" field into two fields, where the second field asks you to "confirm your chosen password". Not a biggie, but makes the app behave as people are used to.

Comment: On point 2 above, the missing button I'm referring to is called "login" on the phone app.

Sorry about that, this is a known issue and we will get to this soon unless Honeycomb 3.2 can make it to devices sooner.   If you visit http://mtgoxlive.com/orders you will be able to see the view in a full screen.  It is merely an issue with the app and "xtra large" screens/honeycomb.  What Android OS are you running, sir?

2. When I exited the app on my Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101, and tried to relogin again, there is no "submit" button or equivalent to submit my password.

This is very strange and could appear to be another UI issue with the newer tablets.  We will get to this as soon as possible, as being able to use this on a tablet is very important to us. :)

Thanks for the feedback and your continued patience as we bring the application to more devices.

Looks pretty cool! It would be nice if the password could be prompted only when needed. (Perhaps this is the case as I haven't downloaded it yet) You could create buy/sell orders, transfers etc and it would be added to a "pending" list. Then the user could "authorize" with a password and it will fulfill the actions. The password would then be used, forgotten, and prompted when needed again.

No worries. I'm running the latest available (in Sweden) official unrooted Android 3.1 build number HMJ37.WW_epad-8.4.4.11-20110711, sir. It's better that the phone app works flawlessly and not the tablet app, than the other way around. But getting both to work is of course ideal :). I'm giving the app five stars anyway.

Right now the app pairs with the account and requires 1 password to login... please let us know how this works for you. :)

Please add pinch-to-zoom functionality on the transaction history tab, or at least increase the size of the text. It's so small it's barely readable on my 3.7 inch HTC Desire phone.

todu, those are excellent suggestions sir and some changes will be made within the next build:
1) Confirm password.
2) Larger font on history (and/or possibly zoom)

As for landscape, this is definitely something we will add soon... in an intuitive way.
Thanks for the continued suggestions! It helps a lot :D

2. When I exited the app on my Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101, and tried to relogin again, there is no "submit" button or equivalent to submit my password.

[Solved]

FYI: I should add that I was using the Swiftkey Tablet X keyboard app, and not the standard Android keyboard. When I tried to change the keyboard to the standard Android one, and reran your app, it started showing the "login" button again. I then tried to reproduce the bug by alternating between the keyboards and force stopping the app in between. No success in reproducing the bug. Maybe it was related to me switching keyboards, or maybe the bug just happened to resolve itself for another unknown reason, at just the same time I tried to switch keyboard.

Currently, Apple has policies against applications which enable the trade of virtual currencies.  We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause at this time, and for now, are working to bring the application across all jailbroken devices and will simultaneously be doing everything we can to bring this application to the Apple App Store.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

This may come soon. :D

It's cool I guess however the need for my password every time I use it literally makes this unusable to me. My passwords are saved and entered automatically, and there's no way I'm memorizing my 40+ digit PW, or lowering that number. To my knowledge I cannot even copy and paste into the entry box.

Edit: in fact, going to Mt Gox straight from my phones browser is a lot easier considering I can auto-fill the passwords with lastpass, keepassdroid or other features.

You simply need to scan and synchronize the application.  You can also copy and paste the text by long pressing on the edit box just as one would in any Android application if you do not have a camera.  You can choose a "password" for sync that is just 4 characters long if you wish.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. :)

edit:  http://mtgoxlive.com/mobile has brief instructions on how to synchronize your phone with your account.

The application is available if you have iOS 4.0.1 (and possibly higher but < 4.3.x).  Please msg me on IRC (rasengan) to find out how to test it out.

I've used the application. After authenticating(which was no problem using the QR code) I'm asked to enter my password. I'm asked to enter my password every time I use the application. Long press only gives me the "Input method" option, no Copy and Paste.

My apologies.  I must have been a bit confused.  It appears that the password box is not indicative of what it is.  Basically, the "password" that is on your phone, is asking for a "new" password which will be used to ONLY on the phone.  In other words, when you first open the application, scan and pair, it will ask you for a password.

Here, for instance, you can choose a password such as '1234'

Subsequent logins, on the phone, will just require you to simply type '1234' in the password box rather than re-pairing.

I hope this clears up any confusion, sir.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Two suggestions/requests:

- Ability to bypass password entry to use in a "no-trade" mode, for just checking prices, etc.
- Home screen widget with current price and balance. (with customizable refresh rate)

Overall it looks good!  :)

The "password" that will be used on your phone is not equal (!=) to the password that you use to login to your Mt. Gox account.  If you can, try to read through the instructions on the Download page or on the opening post.  If you have any additional questions, or need further help, please let me know at your earliest convenience and I will be happy to walk you through it over IRC.  This is most likely my fault as I should have been much more clear about the phone-password.  Quite possibly may re-name it (PIN or other).

I promise you the pairing functionality beats a sticker. :-)

BusmasterDMA, great suggestions.  The 'rights' management should make it into the update by tonight.  As for the widget, that has now entered the todo list, so it will be available soon!

Please keep the comments and suggestions rolling in so we can continue to hone the application into the most versatile, friendly and usable tool for you.

edit: by tomorrow

I've posted an update, with the following additions and/or changes:

  • Automatic idle timeout (5 min)
  • Larger fonts in many screens.
  • Confirm password on Activation/Pairing
  • Multiple profile support
  • Rights support
  • Other optimizations (File size reduced by > 1mb)

The APK was made with the 2.1 minSDK level, which means this application should run just fine on Android 2.1 and up.  Please let me know if your experience faults from this.  Sorry for the extended delay on the Cydia/iOS repository.  This will be taken care of first thing next week.   ;D

I have also updated the OP and will be doing a use-case writeup for the newest features.  Unfortunately, no Apps2SD yet, but the reduced file size (almost 50% smaller) should help.  Please let me know your suggestion, questions, or if you run into any issues.

Thanks to you all for your continued interest and support.

I humbly ask for your forgiveness.  There were issues which caused delays in the implementation and testing of the application.  However, it's now ready and a temporary Cydia repository has been created:

Code:
http://mtgoxlive.com/mobile/apt

Version 2.9 is available there.

Simply go to Cydia and add a new repository and you should be able to find it.  Thank you for your patience.

Cheers,
rasengan

Rasengan, I tried this just a minute ago, and on my iPhone 4 running 4.3.3, it just hangs at the startup screen (the red "a" inside a triangle.) Is this a known issue? I've tried reinstalling and rebooting, as well as switching between wifi/3g...

Not a known issue, until now.  Talk to you on IRC. ;)

Cheers,
rasengan

if we're using 2.8 do you recommend upgrading to 2.9?

if we're using 2.8 do you recommend upgrading to 2.9?

There were a few changes from 2.8->2.9 for both Android and iOS.  The iOS has the added addition of having the Merchant Tools available as they were available in Android 2.8 but not iOS 2.8.  There was also a minor change to the way the History reports data and so that was fixed from 2.8->2.9.

If you need to have an accurate history (as in by decimal point location) or the Merchant Tools, I would recommend upgrading.

Hope this helps :-)

Are the chances of this becoming available on Apple's app store still about 0%?

This may be an issue with the SDK.  Version 3.0 will be built against XCode 4.1.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Any hope to have a Symbian version for Nokia phones?

This may be possible in the future.

rasengen;  what is mtgox's IRC channel address?

Mt. Gox is located on FreeNode -- #MtGox
There is also, #MtGoxLive and ##MtGox-Chat :-)

This is still 0%, for now.  However, we will move to change this.  No matter what it takes.

3.0 is in testing stages right now.  This has multi currency support (major) as well as many other additional minor changes.  Please stay tuned!

We just uploaded Mt. Gox Mobile 3.0 (Android) to the Market.  Sorry for the delays, it required longer and more in-depth testing than the previous versions due to multi-currency support.

Yes sir.  It was implemented in such a way that it will not matter what version you had installed previously.

Edit: Here is a url too -- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=49831.0
(Started a sep. thread to keep it a bit more organized as this was a rather old thread)

Has the IOS app project been abandoned?  I'm jailbroken on IOS 5.1.1 and all I can get the mtgox mobile app to do is launch the splash screen.  I can't get it to do anything else to get started scanning qr code, etc.

Thanks,

Can you please fix this app? Do you need donations for motivation? I'm almost thinking of downgrading iOS just so I can use this app again. It worked on 5.0 I think. I skipped 5.0.1 and 5.1, does anyone know if it works on either of these versions?

Hi navigator and friends,

I really would love to update and continue with this beloved project, but this application was acquired by Mt. Gox quite some time ago, and I do not have any access to it.  I apologize very much for the inconvenience. It has been quite some time since I have been off this project (more than 6 months).

You will need to take it up with Mt. Gox directly.

Cheers,
rasengan

+1 I can confirm the same symptoms.

After successfully installing the MtGox Mobile app from Cydia's BigBoss repository on my iPhone 4S (5.1.1), it only launches a fancy splashscreen.

The splashscreen doesn't disappear, and the app doesn't crash. It just sorta stays there, taunting you.
Re-installing the app doesn't do anything.

I also submitted a ticket to MtGox and they told me they were closing my ticket as "Resolved."
(they lied!)

+1 on the UsersWhoWantThisAppUpdated count...

+1 Same as above few posters

While I can still access the .com site, its not perfectly formatted for my phone, and a dedicated app would be so much easier to deal with.

I have nudged mtgox again on iOS support and received nothing more helpful than previous posters.

I raised a ticket with mtgox
"Hi, I understand that iOS 5 is no longer supported, however the current release is iOS 6.1.1. Furthermore I understand that mtgox have been responsible for this application since early 2012 and I have seen reports since mid last year about this same freezing problem. Do MTGOX actually intend any development or is iOS simply a shelved project?
Cheers
Andrew"

And received the following response from Marcus in mtgox support.

"Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your email. We are sorry to inform you that our app does not work with iOS 5. We are currently working on developing a new app that will work with new Iphone models and once that is done we will make an announcement. However we do not have a ETA on this.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact Mt.Gox Support

Thanks,

MtGox.com Team"

To which I left the following feedback

"This ticket has been rated as Bad, I'm unsatisfied
With the following comment:
simply marked ticket as resolved without actually attempting to provide any information. MTGOX Application has been broken for a long time now and there is no information forthcoming. If the application is abandoned by mtgox then would appreciate knowing this so iOS users can move on. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=31710.60 has a lot of people experiencing the same problem and been told it will get fixed but this is going back to mid last year."

Don't hold your breath :-(

"Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your reply Could you please let us know what is the IPhone model that you are using.

Thanks,

"Hi Marcus, I am currently using an iPhone 4S, but have access to other devices if need be.
Regards
Andrew"

"Hello Andrew,

Please be advised that our App does not work with iPhone 4 and higher versions as these devices are newer and we have to release a newer version of our app and we are working on that.
