Title: Way to heat my bedroom?
Post by: squall1066 on October 30, 2013, 09:47:36 AM
No idea where this thread goes, (mod feel free to move)

Winter is coming, It's getting cold a nights here in the UK.

I have a cold bedroom and normally put on a 500w convector heater on over the winter.

How can I turn this into mining power?

The problem is, I need to sleep, so GPU's are out, I cant afford to put in a KNC (maybe the smaller one but cant

find any or anyone that will tell me if this generates some heat.

Maybe BE's? their cheep, but I would need a large bank of them to generate some heat?

Ideas? Looking for something available now.

CPU coins,

Primecoin perhaps, you can solo mine or pool at ypool.net ( there are other pools but i cannot comment since ive never used em )

If you would already be paying the bill for the heater then yea, makes sense to try and make some cash too ! With the correct cpu coolers, ( self contained water blocks for cpu are cheap these days) next to no noise !

Good idea, To further this point, What about Water cooled GPU's? I could alt coin mine?

I'm guessing this would not generate alot of heat tho, Water cooled units are cool by design.

CPU mining aren't hot enough, you should do some GPU mining instead, just undervolt and reduce the fan speed to about 40%....

Obviously it depends how much you want to spend, but this might be it:

Bitfury is expecting new version boards any day now with lower prices, currently no complete kit is listed: http://www.bitfurystrikesback.com/shop/ If you're curious, you can still see the old kit here: https://megabigpower.com/shop/index.php?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=53

Build a 12-16 board kit and use big low rpm fans, I used http://www.aerocool.us/accessory/shark_b14.html
I already have a kit of the previous version running in the bedroom, not annoying at all and uses around 400W @ 230V.

So be a little patient and you'll enjoy a nice warm bedroom soon ;)

I only suggested water cooling as  OP said he didnt want alot of noise. I have 3 boxes (one watercooled, 2 not) and they produce enough heat to warm the room ( also in uk ) but its not my bedroom so i dont care so much about the noise !

GPU and CPU have weird smell which might affect your brain. Don't do it..

It's a little late I think.

As regarding the pic, I actually don't like strawberry's. I think food should be on a plate. Squirty cream is all ways fun tho!

No weird smell but it is dried air and it is hard to breath, but is different with water cooling

During my span of GPU mining I did not have any detectable smell, perhaps your cards are running dangerously hot? I always kept my GPUs under 65C.

Note that any kind of heating done directly by electricity adds sensible heat to the air only. (at a rate of 3.41 BTU/hr per watt of electricity consumed) Running electric heat can reduce the relative humidity of the space because as temperature increases; with no additional moisture relative humidity drops (see Psychrometrics on wikipedia)

But yeah, this doesn't change with water cooling, you're still adding only sensible heat to the air and will have the same affect on the air conditions in the conditioned space, the only benefits are lower silicon temperature at your CPU/GPU and lower noise due to the increased surface area and lower speed fans.

GPU mining is the best.

I have two 5850 mining Litecoin in my bedroom

I have replaced the coolers with some Arctic Cooling Mono plus which are very quiet and keeps the cards cool, but the room still gets warm during the night time hours.

The cards themselves are quiet the problem now is the PSU fan is the loudest. xD

But not so loud that I can't sleep. It is actually soothing to hear a deep hump for the fan.

of course mining for heat isn't going to be an efficient way of heating, but maybe you could make a sound proofish box for the GPU miner?

If you feel weird smell from GPU mining, do not overclock your GPUs, or decrease cgminer aggresivity

than air can not circulate and gpus become hotter and hotter

Maybe i'm not a HE, LOL  :o

I have herd some good points about BE's, I can get 49+ hub for less than 2 coins, Surely this will give off some heat? I know it's only 16GH's but I will put them soloing with my other 5 sticks and run my own lottery.  ;D

Or a blade might be better as it does not need a computer, I have Ethernet in the room, So this would be easier to run. at a little over 1 coin for 10~GHs, Might need 2, not sure how much heat they give.

i have one antec 300 in my bedroom with watercooled 5850 highly overclocked with a rad on top of the 140mm fan. runs silent on all fans set to low. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/68357967/Images/Photos/Miners/4.jpg

another antec 300 in my living room with two 5870s overclocked also with 140mm rad on top and 240mm rad inside two intake fans. it runs a bit louder but gives out much more heat. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/68357967/Images/Photos/Miners/5.jpg

Use back your heater, it is cheaper since you already have it. Mining wont get you much anyway

I'm guessing this would not generate alot of heat tho, Water cooled units are cool by design.

Water cooled units are no less hot than their air cooled counterparts.

The heat is just redirected from the fans into tubes and eventually a radiator.  Plus there is no fan noise other than the radiator.

Put that radiator inside your room instead of outside your window, and it will heat.

You could even get fancy and get 2 radiators (one inside and one out), put a flow control valve and you can control the heat it produces inside.   :)

I suggest keeping the heater you have because it won't cost $5000. But if you don't mind losing lot's of money.

The KNC is a perfect choice as it is 1 Watt/1 GHZ. A 550 GHZ Jupiter would be 550 Watts. It would put out 50 more watts than the heater you already have. And would heat quicker as it has a fan dissipating the heat.

I've run BFL jalapenos and singles as well as Avalon minis.

The noise gets on your nerves, believe me. I've got fairly large rooms and can't bear to be in the same room as them. I finally figured out a solution by putting them outside in a waterproof sheltered enclosure. The outside temperature ( < 5C ) keeps them cool and keeps the noise away.

I'm losing the heat (which really is what you want), but there is no way I'd keep from losing my mind if I were to hear them constantly.

Set fan speeds to low and install one big outtake fan instead. I find these almost enjoyable to have around. I'm so used to static noises when I go to sleep, I feel very uncomfortable in "total" silence. Because I'm starting to discern and pick out other random noises, like some distant barking outside, or a spider running on the wall, or rain, you name it.

You can always do water cooler or oil cooler to reduce the sound....

I did some maths based on this idea, As I really considered it.

The problem is the price of the waterblocks! it's outrageous, More than the card is worth, So a 5870 will cost me £70 the waterblock is around £90! that's £160 per setup, I would need 4 as less would not get me any return, A good mobo to handle it, PSU and don't forget the water kit alone is at least £100 (they go up to £400???) a total setup is around a grand in £

So all that is a whopping 8-9 coins, for about £3.50 a day return! (based on LTC) lol, I am better off buying 2 singles and getting 0.1 a day staying with BTC mining.

squall did you try an Xbox 360 PHAT version?

It's just a heatsink with 2 exhaust fans so it gets really fuckin hot but won't shutdown at extreme heat because it's designed to get very very hot without issue...

I've been running my PHAT Xbox 360 US version mind you but the EU version is the same while I mine on my 1 x AMD Radeon HD 6570 , 1 x AMD Athlon II X3 445 AM3 , 15 x ASiCMiNER Block Erupter USBS , 2 x Bitforce  SC Jalapenos and 1 x Avalon Mini 60 GH/s Unit and the Xbox 360 left on at the Dashboard and it stays pretty warm while I'm sleeping

and the great part is when I wake up I don't have to immediately turn on the heat the downside I guess is the dry throat and dehydration but I've found the solution for that on really warm nights I just turn off the Xbox 360

You would be absolutely blown away at how warm your room will get with the door and window closed and an Xbox 360 Phat Console running non stop :D

I run my rig with 7870 and 5770 during the cooler months(Im Ireland so similar climate) and it does a great job of heating my room(a lil box of a thing). Just in the process of recalibrating my setup atm but I can set them low when Im sleeping and its just a small hum. Cant run it weekends when the girlfriend is here but two bodies is enough to heat the place ok then. Also have a second box that runs under the desk 24/7 as a sort of home server, so thats constantly pumping out about 100W or so.

Thinking about an extra fan blowing onto the cards so I can slow down their own fans a bit more and manage noise.

Undervolting it should greatly reduce the heat generated. You did that right?
