Namecoin HARD FORK..

Update to fix critical bug revealed by Libcoin.

Set at Block 150,000

Approx 8/December

There are a couple of repos at the moment, but this will be consolidated to one "soon"..

All main repos have been patched (see below for details on the repos to try to avoid any confusion)

http://namecoin.info/

BUG DETAILS:
Original Threads by Libcoin
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=310954
http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1295

Some info on Hard Fork:
http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1297

For normal users, and for Namecoin-qt - (can also compile namecoind from these repos, which includes added RPC commands)

see www.namecoin.info

---
Original namecoin-qt with intergrated name management (the most current, but also can include pre-release updates)

Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=236375.0

Original Namecoin Repo (CLI ONLY - namecoind):

I will sticky the thread on December 12th or 13th, so people will have a few days to make appropriate actions. If the retarget date changes, I'd appreciate it if someone would update me.

** spread the word about the update **

Hash rate is increasing quite rapidly atm.. if it keeps increasing the date could be brought forward quite a lot

Thanks for your generous NMDF donation!

IMHO it's the easiest way we can contribute to the idea behind Namecoin, especially since I have zero technical background knowledge. I noticed there were very few donations at all, even after the bug and it's immediate workaround became public. The development of BTC did a great favor for many of us and I want Namcoin to succeed, too. So once more it's up to the noble.

cheers

Hi, yes it does
or
if you need extra rpc commands (rawtransactions/encrypt wallet and more) you can use https://github.com/namecoin-qt/namecoin-qt (and compile namecoind)

This thread is surprisingly quiet considering the hard fork that's imminent.   :o

Perhaps we should get a mod to move it to a more prominent location?

on a side note : thanks for the outstanding work to all you guys who've helped with this.

Snailbrain,

Cex.io is giving out malformed addresses for NMC deposits,
i was given an address starting with M... and could not make a deposit.

just opened a ticket so they can look into it,
most likely they are using a outdated version,
hopefully this is fixed on the namecoin repository or they will have to compile namecoin-id  from the namecoin-q repository....

 :-\

strange, should still work,
but if you are in contact with them, ask them to make sure they have updated for hard fork on ghash.io? (they run that too?) - although this is most definitely unrelated
do you want to post the address or in a pm?

It seems all pools (big ones) have responded and have updated, except GHash.io, so if someone can get the message to them or find out if they have upgraded, that would be great, just to be extra safe.

Namecoin addresses starting with M are perfectly valid: http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/5578/are-there-any-combination-of-letters-that-a-namecoin-address-cannot-start-with (see first answer)

i tried to send 1nmc from kraken few days ago and it said failed.
didn't want to try again...
I thought all NMC addresses started with N,
so i opened a ticket and pointed out to this thread. They said they will look into it.

Mwt8mbLib3tANhVgisDjDC9PWSi4Ey4ahM

Maybe from a wallet or other place it works.
Or maybe the tx fee 0.001 is not enought?

You can try  :D

They said they will look into it.

Mwt8mbLib3tANhVgisDjDC9PWSi4Ey4ahM
In fact, Mwt8mbLib3tANhVgisDjDC9PWSi4Ey4ahM is a valid address. The console command validateaddress yields:
Code:
{
    "isvalid" : true,
    "address" : "Mwt8mbLib3tANhVgisDjDC9PWSi4Ey4ahM",
    "ismine" : false
}

Namecoin addresses starting with M are perfectly valid: http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/5578/are-there-any-combination-of-letters-that-a-namecoin-address-cannot-start-with
The technically inclined may also have a look at etotheipi's diagram:

tried again and works just fine.

thanks for the info,
regular people don't know NMC address can range between
MvaNCeVyvP6ZXYFWGpKaDX9ujEQ418F7sm and NKuyBkoGdZZSLyPbJEetheRhMjezbtjJCf.

try -rescan

if doesn't work

backup all datadir folder, and then try with fresh wallet, if still doesn't work, delete nameindex.dat and the other one, if still doesn't work delete all datadir folder,

or check debug.log

my local qt wallet is updated to 0.3.72, so no problem there... but I was wondering about the daemon that I run on my server...

not sure if successful,

some pools stuck on certain blocks.. awaiting responses

Good job snailbrain Namecoin Community! Any extra updates? :)

not yet.. (fixed your comment)

there is an old bug which can cause corrupt nameindex.dat... due to the update which has more "rigorous" checks it may have caused a problem for btcguild.
They are (or already have) redownloading chain. Hopefully will be ok, but if it does happen again, we should hopefully be able to fix the (used to be rare) nameindex bug once and for all.

hopefully.

btcguild = "so far, so good"

nmc may still have a bumpy ride till the rebase or re-implementation on libcoin (and maybe beyond).. but there are enough people (and devs [not that devs aren't people]) working on Namecoin and related projects to improve and maintain it.
Even if this fork is/was successful, there are some little "not as important" issues that need fixing, but will be left till the next hard fork.

Some things to look forward to:

Secure Login Systems
Namecoin Torrent Client (decentralized/censorship resistant)
Fair Name Trading (buy/sell namecoin names in your client safely)
Namecoin Instant Messenger (secure messaging system)
Lite client
Decentralized MicroBlog
Secure Web Browsing .bit domains

and much more...

Please support namecoin by donating to the NMC development fund, or registering and helping on the forum. www.namecoin.info

yeah, i guess
http://explorer.dot-bit.org/
is showing the old chain,
if there are people still mining on the old chain it should appear there.
but with current difficulty they will take forever to found a block.
is there any other explorer to see the current chain?

ghash.io looks to be mining just fine.

update: explorer.bit working fine now.

That all sounds really great, can't wait for these features to be developed. Do you have any idea about timeline, when any of those items will be released?

I like namecoin, I do believe it has a lot of potential and at the same time I am wondering why all new 'fun-alt-coins' seem to have a better accessibility?
What strikes me every time I am trying to find a mac-wallet for namecoin, that I don't seem to be able to find one, unless I am compiling it myself, right?
(and that is not going to happen because I am not that tech-savvy) I feel like with the dot-bit forum, namecoin.info and namecoin.org - there are too many resources that all look very different that it is hard to tell which one is legit and more importantly the right source of information.... I can imagine that this simple fact alone is a huge hurdle for a wider adoption, let alone the missing mac-wallet software.

What I would wish for is an official entity that has credibility to organize web-presence and offers downloads of official software (with pgp and or md5).
All these softwares from to be downloaded at mediafire, box.com etc... don't really create a lot of trust, in my opinion.

I just wanted to put that out there as I believe, getting these things sorted out would greatly benefit the namecoin-environment.

On a different note: Does somebody know if www.namecoin.org is legit? It has a wide range of wallets available for downloads but I can't find credits on that site... which makes it suspicious to me.

Thanks.

Though namecoin.org implies it, it is NOT the official homepage. The official homepage is http://namecoin.info where there are windows binaries. Also somewhere on this forum there are unofficial mac binaries from maxpower.

this is the maxpower version, phelix is talking about. its unofficial and not
thoroughly tested. so the usual trial first and use at own risk caveats apply.
