Title: Will Bitcoin Replace Gold ?
Post by: totol05 on April 07, 2018, 01:15:02 PM
Gold in general is no better. The value of gold is nothing more than a result of a global consensus - at the moment everyone agrees to consider gold a measure of value, simply because this measure is in some form or another necessary. If we assume a utopian situation, that tomorrow everyone agrees that gold is not such a measure, then it will be good only for the production of quality wires and trinkets.
The btc is gaining momentum for exactly the same reason - the global consensus towards the btc is constantly being strengthened. In this case, unlike gold, the cue-ball is not only a measure of value, but also a settlement system, and gold is not a competitor for this parameter

According to the World Gold Council, the total value of all gold ever mined is about $7.8 trillion. While the Bitcoin market totals about $120 billion. This means that Bitcoin have a long way to go to become as valuable and widely accepted as gold. However Gold is considered the anti-fiat currency and some people like to argue Bitcoin also play that role. I think the two assets (if bitcoin considered as an asset) can coexist. Instead of one replacing the other.

2009 has something to do with the events to come.....

Stock markets were crashing in 2009 (DOW 6500), Bitcoin was launched, Chinese government telling its citizens to buy gold and silver, Obama's wars...., North Korea, Iran. There is big move predicted in Gold and Silver after Donald Trump's $150 billion tariffs on Chinese good and services.

Gold protects people's wealth during wars and inflation/price rise.

I wouldn't think that the two would even come close to affecting one another, as it makes no sense. Gold is something which people use as a long term investment, something which people usually turn to in the time of a market downturn (like a massive one) Bitcoin is supposed to be a currency, one which people use instead of FIAT money.

So gold and bitcoin shouldn't affect one another at all, though who knows if they will. As some people do use bitcoin as an investment and not as its purpose, a currency.

Aside from gold's physical properties. There are too many stubborn gold bugs who hate Bitcoin with a fashion. That means there'll always be demand for gold. Therefore Bitcoin can't replace it.

My great, great Granddad asked the same question about Tulips and got his answer about taking over from gold.

Virtual money and paper gold just somehow don't quite feel the same to me and the OP is talking out of his
bottom me thinks given how few people now trust Bitcoin after the miners put fees up to $55 per transaction.

Dream on boy!

I think portability is the greatest gold asset. You can move a lot of wealth with a relatively small amount of gold. And gold is easy to keep, and relatively easy to hide.
Bitcoin has the same features as gold. it is not even necessary to smuggle gold to avoid government detection. The ability to move digital money opens new avenues for criminals or people who are afraid of government detection to be able to transfer money seamlessly.

Bitcoin is a non-government currency. Its purpose is to become a medium of exchange, and ultimately let people use the medium of exchange to measure the value of the object.

Bitcoin certainly wouldn't want to replace gold, and if it replaced gold that day, it would lose its meaning.

Bitcoin is worth more than gold, but it can never be a national currency. Because bitcoin itself is not a stable currency, it is not controlled by politics, it is not an element of official currency, it is destined to be a folk currency.

Gold has been used as money for thousands of years, so it is unlikely to be replaced any time soon. People who think gold will suddenly lose value are deluding themselves. Bitcoin will perhaps complement gold as a digital version of it.

China’s gold imports have surged over 700 percent since 2010 and the country remained the world's biggest consumer of the precious metal last year, according to the latest data from Hong Kong. In 2015 the country imported almost 1,000 tons of gold, compared to about 100 tons five years ago. China was followed by India which imported 849 tons of gold in 2015.Last year China’s demand for gold coins surged 25 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier. The rush followed Beijing’s devaluation of the yuan as consumers sought to protect their wealth.China’s central bank has also accelerated gold purchases to diversify the country's reserves away from the US dollar. However, Beijing doesn’t explain the jump in gold demand, claiming the country’s gold reserves have grown only a little in recent years.

China has a lot more gold than they declare," John LaForge, head of Wells Fargo's commodities team told CNN.For the last six years Beijing has stayed secretive about its gold reserves. Last year the government finally revealed a nearly 60 percent growth in reserves since 2009. The country became the fifth largest holder of gold in the world, following the US, Germany, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Italy and France.

in my opinion NO, bitcoin can't replace the gold, the gold have a physic bitcoin not, the price of gold is stable than bitcoin, this is the main advantages of gold than bitcoin, we all know that old people like to invest in gold because the gold is real and you should kept it by yourself, in bitcoin you need the 3rd party to make sure that your bitcoin is safe, like web wallet, hardware wallet, and the other. so maybe have a little risk because of this

Yeah so how come if what you say is true that the falling price of Bitcoin is blamed on governments and banks
and not a fucking word is said here about the mining fees crashing the price when they peaked at $55.

For me gold and Bitcoin are the same thing because it can be an investment. But for now I think that Bitcoin is much more worth it because it has a high fluctuation rate so that we can get a fairly large profit margin so it is suitable to be a long-term investment and short-term investment. While gold is much more suitable for long-term investment because the price is quite stable, but still the gold price increase is not too high. Yes gold more offers us to a security in making investments.

I still believe bitcoin cannot replace gold because is very expensive and the market value is always increasing
unlike the bitcoin that the price is changeable depending on the investors.

Individuals believe that the current gold reserves are largely a historical legacy and have nothing to do with currencies, and currencies no longer need gold to support them.

Bitcoin is a new type of cryptocurrency, and many people now invest in bitcoins.

I don't think that Bitcoin would ever replace gold, for a number of reasons. Bitcoin is a form of currency, whereas gold has many other applications, the one of the most important is jewelry. Gold doesn't require electricity to trade, on the other hand, you need electricity (computer and internet) to trade bitcoin. Gold is one of the most liquid assets, traded daily in well-established exchanges all around the globe. With gold with you, anywhere you travel in the world, you can convert it into cash.  Every day, some $18 billion, worth of physical gold are traded in London alone.

in my opinion bitcoin is very potential to replace gold because bitcoin more clearly only has a total supply of 21 million pieces of bitcoin while gold is still very much and you try to imagine how long gold exchange has been going on while the new bitcoin briefly already can almost equal the circulation of dollars earned from trading bitcoin .

There's no way that bitcoin can replace gold in any aspects. Maybe one day it will compete with gold but it's hard to fathom how can bitcoin will replace it. Gold is way far different from bitcoin evenand if they're both beneficial to us. Usage of gold is still better than of bitcoin so no for it.

Yes, might be but in future. main problem is many countries are slowing the process of cryptocurrency around the world. when all country will start supporting it openly only then we can see this kind of romantic dream that bitcoin will replace the gold.

The main problem of bitcoin replacing gold is its legal status around the world. As you mentioned, a lot of countries have started to prohibit and impose rules prejudicial to the existence of bitcoin. The process includes an imposition of taxes, stern rules and regulations against ICOs in country, country prohibition of any form of utilization, etc.
Another thing to consider, gold has been the basis of every country in terms of its currency value. Without gold, their currency will contain no value at all. Gold reserves actually reflect the status of a country and the value of their currency; it is purely on the economic side. If bitcoin were to replace gold, then countries must agree and view it as their main basis.

Gold is a natural resource and bitcoin is a crypto currency. Per my thoughts, bitcoin cannot replace gold
thus bitcoin and gold have their respective advantages. so we have to make the best use of it to be more useful and profitable. interesting what if we invest in bitcoin and gold, because bitcoin and gold have a high value.

Both of them have high value in terms of price but what makes them difference is their nature. Gold, in general, is tangible and is a non-renewable metal. Arguably, bitcoin also has a limited number of supply in the market. I doubt that bitcoin would replace gold soon as countries need to accept it first as their basis for their currency.

there is a marked difference between bitcoin and gold, bitcoin is a crypto currency that does not have a physical form while gold has a real physical form. we need to admit that bitcoin prices are much higher than gold, that's why many people invest bitcoin because it hopes to get a big advantage. they prefer bitcoin than gold but it does not mean bitcoin better than gold. I would argue that if you want to invest with big profits of bitcoin but must be prepared with a big risk of losses too, but if you want to invest safely, I think gold is better for that. because gold has been recognized by all countries around the world about its existence while bitcoin so it is.

Money and Gold. Gold has always played an important role in the international monetary system, They circulated as currency in many countries before the introduction of paper money.Bitcoin and gold have important differences. These range from something as simple as tenure to the very nature of these assets themselves: gold is tangible, but bitcoin is a digital creation, it explain as between gold as physical object while bitcoin is entirely digital but both are safe haven assets, the only thing that good for them are both are in good investment, but hence it will not replace to one another as the TERM ~ GOLD is Gold and BITCOIN is BITCOIN  8) 8) 8)

Gold is something which has got a physical backing as well the trust from people around the world as the best source for investment. Second thing it is under the control of governments, so it won't be regulated big as our bitcoin. These days more people invest upon the digital form of the gold. Replacement won't happen in the future as well.

Bitcoin or another crypto currency will not be able to replace gold, since these are completely different in nature and even exist in different worlds. The value of gold remains unshakable for thousands of years and it will uniquely continue its existence as a measure of value and value storage and beyond. This is still a crypto currency, which exists for less than ten years, until it has a clear enough perspective and various problems constantly arise with it.

I never compare gold with bitcoin because of too much characteristics difference.
Bitcoin is no doubt the future and pioneer of next generation money but that has nothing to do with gold due to high volatility of bitcoin price it will never be considered as the only best investment in the world.
then it will be good only for the production of quality wires and trinkets.
Don't degrade such a reliable and precious metal, even today it is considered as the most reliable investment across the world and many big investors chose it to minimize the risk of their investment.

They differ in characteristics so I don't think that bitcoin will gonna replace gold because they cannot compare each other, first gold is visible and it is regulated by our government meaning they are really different and are unique in different ways, but in the totality over the past years gold has proven enough that we can still earn thru it but not how much we are earning at bitcoin.

In this case, unlike gold, the cue-ball is not only a measure of value, but also a settlement system, and gold is not a competitor for this parameter
of course, bitcoin has a more special value than gold, the value of gold rises slowly and easily predicted, but bitcoin has a very rapid fluctuation and can also be high very quickly and difficult to predicted.

so, I think bitcoin will be able to replace the gold value. but hampered by the lack of human knowledge about technology.

It is impossible for bitcoin to replace gold and vice versa. I think it is naive to think that it would even happen. If you're only basis for bitcoin to replace gold is its value or price then you clearly have the wrong idea here. Both bitcoin and gold has their own perks which the other does not have and if you understand this then that alone is more than enough to justify that one will not replace the other.

Bitcoin is an online virtual currency built by Blockchain technology, it has many advantages but also many disadvantages. The level of volatility and always manipulated by the rich, so it is hazardous for investors. Those who buy gold because they want to keep their money with a stable value so Bitcoin too volatile for user needs.

No bitcoin was not created to replace gold. Because of the high price of bitcoin people used it just like gold rather than using it as a currency. Gold has been around for decades and its legacy it established cannot just be replaced with something new just like bitcoin. Maybe in many more years bitcoin will have a chance but right now its too early.

Gold and bitcoin have similar parameters. But gold is a material asset, and bitcoin is a virtual value. As for gold, everything is clear. This is not only an object of investment, but also a valuable material, from which expensive jewelry is made. Gold will always be in price and in fashion. Because it is very small in the whole world. Regarding bitcoin, it is not clear whether he will exist in a few years at all.

You think so, and can you verify this info somehow or we need to trust your words?
Bitcoin can't replace gold, gold is physical and bitcoin is digital, how can bitcoin replace gold? Gold is used for many things, bitcoin is the currency or an asset. You can use bitcoin in many ways, but gold can be used in too many ways too, you can even have gold teeth, you have gold in food.
You can't compare bitcoins and gold, in one moment value of 1 btc was similar to gold but bitcoin now worth a lot more, so you can't compare it by the price either. Bitcoin can't replace gold, its not possible, I hope people will stop comparing gold and bitcoin.
When you here bitcoin and gold in same sentence its there just a metaphor, nothing more, remember that once and for all.

no bitcoin will not replace gold, Why? because gold is a thing and bitcoin is another thing.
Yes indeed! I agree. Bitcoin and gold are totally different things. And in my own opinion, bitcoin will not replace gold. Why? Because first of all, gold is something you can touch or hold literally while bitcoin is a digital thing. And when in crisis, or let's say a particular place experienced a calamity, there will be power outage for sure. Internet connection and electricity would be down for some time; we can't say how long. Electronic payments may not be done during those troubled times. Gold, on the other hand, may be converted into cash immediately provided that you have some golds with you in your accessories, like watches and other jewelries. In addition, gold remains to be one of the world's liquid assets, traded daily in well established exchanges globally.

However, let's admit that cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin attacts lots of investors especially millenials, which in gold's case, was a very hard one to achieve. But, after all, both assets are considered safe havens.

I think bitcoin should not replace gold. Bitcoin is a digital virtual currency. Bitcoin has its advantages and disadvantages. Among the shortcomings can be noted its volatility, bitcoin is too variable for the needs of the user. Gold has existed for many decades - it is not only an investment object, but also a valuable material, from which expensive jewelry is made. In this way, gold and bitcoin have their functions and their mission.

An old long discussion which is going on since ages and what we all have to asnwer is that they both are absolutely different and the very same answer is true today. Gold until now is just seen as asset and nothing like that once it was considered as currency but its own problems led to replacement of gold. We got asset backed money after we replaced gold. However, we later came on with fiat which was nothing but just accumulation of debt. For which we bought in crypto something as real money like gold but also easily transferable as fiat. So obviously bitcoin has already replaced gold as currency but as a form of asset its still dubious.

I am sure that Bitcoin can't replace gold. It is very simply. People believed in gold for centuries and that it worths something, but Bitcoin has no such trust. In future BTC and gold can become competitors and both assets will have large support from investors. But in the nearer 10-20 years I don't believe that in will become reality.

It is as easy as this, when people need a thing, like a thing, or are amused by a thing, that thing will be important. Hence, it will have value. But as to how much value it will have will depend entirely on how people are driven into it or how much they need or want that specific thing. This is the case with gold and bitcoins. But really, I would prefer to have both if I could than to even chose between the two which is completely dumb. But that's just my opinion though.

Bitcoin is virtual like credit card and online banking network that we use every day. Bitcoin can be used for online and in-store payments as well as conventional money. Bitcoin technology - protocol and cryptography - has a strong record of security records, and the Bitcoin network is probably the largest distributed tally project in the world. Bitcoin's most common disadvantage lies in its user error. Bitcoin wallet data that holds private keys can be erased accidentally, lost, or stolen. This is similar to physical cash stored in digital form. Fortunately, users can apply security measures to protect their money or use the services of providers that offer high level security and insurance against theft or loss.

Gold is a trusted precious metal that can retain its value and be used in transactions. In addition, gold has a unique and rare because gold is made from the process of magmatic or concentration on the surface of the earth. Gold is a metal that is soft, corrosion resistant and easily exposed so that in its development gold can be formed into jewelry. Gold is known before Christ and is used as a tool to transact. Currently, gold becomes one of the largest investments or foreign exchange earners for the country

Both of these will make a good investment vehicle. live we can consider and have the courage to ber

For this moment, i think gold is still not being replace so easily. Gold is limited edition and there is fix formula and rate for every gram it sell and it also has the committee to check and to help to fix the price. But for bitcoin, it is decentralize, thus it is hard to fix the rate and its rate also too fluctuate to monitor. So maybe in the future it will be the gold in crypto world but it will not able to replace gold.

The popularity on bitcoin is now trending all over the world because of the capabilities than gold has. I know gold is also popular in terms of prices but I think in terms of opportunity and without any amount to invest bitcoin is the most relevant. It has a brighter future as long as we support and manage our time for the sake of bitcoin. Bitcoin is decentralized and no one can control on the market price and the fluctuation so I think in near future it has a potential to be our single currency and the USD will be replacement on currencies.

Bitcoin and gold are in two separate categories, sure they are both stores of value, but one is digital and one is physical. They both have their own space, and both will continue to be used. Obviously Gold is no longer used as a payment method due to the difficulty in moving it around, and verifying its value.  If you are asking if bitcoin will replace gold, it already has, what you should be asking is when/if ever will it replace fiat.
