Title: MyBitcoin stole 2 bitcoins from me
Post by: Mt.Fun on July 29, 2011, 03:08:30 PM
Why is Mybitcoin.com advertised all over the place like they are some sort of reliable bitcoin service? I sent them a little over 2 Bitcoins and they appeared in my account very fast. I then withdrew them from Mybitcoin.com and sent them somewhere else only to find they never got there. I tried using their internal messaging system and no reply. It has been almost 24 hours and my Bitcoins are still missing. The balance on Mybitcoin.com is back to 0 and the transfer history shows they were sent, however, the address I sent them to does not appear in the block explorer. I am sure they were never sent and Mybitcoin.com has my balance at zero. I ask again: Why is Mybitcoin.com treated as a legitimate business? Once this happened I searched for info about this company and all I found was several people saying they were robbed too. Mybitcoin.com deserves to get sued and the Bitcoin community needs to blacklist them publicly so newbies don't get discouraged after being robbed.

So you have sent Bitcoins from Mybitcoin.com to a local wallet successfully?

It was a previously used address but as far as I can tell those addresses are valid forever, right? If it were invalid would the Bitcoins return to Mybitcoin.com?

Mybitcoin is a scam.  I have no idea why anyone would still endorse them as a legitimate service after how many people I have seen losing BTC through it.  I refuse to use it, and I will refuse to pay any website through it.  I hope others do the same, and help get the word out about how mybitcoin is a scam.

What's the address? Just check it on http://blockexplorer.com/. Maybe there is a problem with your bitcoin client.

Wow, that's really disturbing. One of the 1st things I did was sign up for MyBitcoin because I thought I saw it on a "beginner's guide". I'll have to inform whomever wrote it to remove it!

Doesn't appear on blockexplorer. Leads me to believe it was never sent and mybitcoin just kept the BTC and set my balance to 0.

It's lost permanently if the address is valid but non-existent. If invalid, the client won't even send it out I believe.

If it's not on blockexplorer, then it wasn't sent.  Sounds like you were scammed...  :'(  I don't believe anyone has ever been successful in contacting anyone involved in the site.

Interesting. Won't it just wait until the wallet comes back online. In the case of someone sending to a valid address not yet created would it not suddenly gain that amount when it was created?

I thought it's a bit like a text message. Waits till it turns on then sends it.

If not people need to leave their wallets on all the time and we know that isn't true. So maybe if there was a time limit of X days/weeks/months?

You are getting confused.

You can send to a bitcoin address that is in no one's wallet, which is what Xephan was referring to.  In this case, the bitcoins are effectively lost (it would take billions of years to accidentally stumble on the private key related to that bitcoin address).

Makes sense. If it does not exist the key has not yet been created so it should be detected at send. So it should not send to an invalid address. Does it though?

If it was valid but the wallet was offline, it would have a valid key and be sent. Wouldn't it then wait till the wallet was online?

If not I need to leave my wallet online all the time to wait for the millions I am being sent. That doesn't sound right.

An invalid address is not the same as a non-existent address :D
Something like this "mywalletaddress" would be invalid and non-existent
Something that looks like this "186q9YUW3x8TVHC5aYBEqgZZYMxft8Cw9f" may be valid but non-existent.

No, all transactions are pushed into the network and recorded in the blocks regardless of whether the address is online. When you bring your wallet online, it will scan the newer blocks for addresses that you are using, then update itself accordingly.

So in theory somebody could fire up their wallet 50 years from now and immediately receive some bitcoins from a mistaken transaction done today.

If the destination address has been used before, shouldn't it show up in blockexplorer even if this transaction was somehow invalidated?

yes the original transaction with that address is in the block explorer but not the one from mybitcoin. they were for different amounts and made on different days so it is obvious.

Also having trouble with MyBitcoin...

Transfer was confirmed on their website, but no trace in block explorer. Even stranger is that the incoming transfer from another mybitcoin user with which I funded the outgoing transfer is not present in block explorer either! It seems I never had the money I never received.  ???

Now the mybitcoin site is down and I'm wondering if I will ever see that currency again.

Maybe (hopefully) they took the site down after noticing these problems and the outstanding transfers will be initiated when (if) it comes back online.

This is a huge headache.

I know it's been several hours since this thread was started but... it can take some time for transactions to be processed and appear in Block Explorer and your wallet. If you haven't downloaded all of the blocks on your computer then you won't be able to see your incoming transaction. You have not provided us with the address that you sent your bitcoins to and have left us no way of verifying your claim.

I'm just covering some of the basics and I'm not defending MyBitcoin at all. I just checked and their site is down, who knows why or when it'll be up.

If you initiate a transaction, wait a few hours, and the transaction doesn't appear in block explorer, then the coins weren't sent. Placing a transaction in the public hash chain is essentially the definition of "sent" in this context.

This particular detail is consistent with how it is advertised.  MyBitcoin-to-MyBitcoin transfers are done on MyBitcoin's records and not on the block chain.

That's good to know, especially when searching block explorer - coins involved in a transfer might come from some other address.

Exactly, for Mt. Fun and I MyBitcoin is deducting funds from our accounts but not initiating a transaction to the recipient.

Exactly correct. The funds sent appear in the block explorer and arrived in Mybitcoin. Then I sent them from Mybitcoin to another wallet and they never got there and the transaction is not in the block explorer but Mybitcoin records the payment as sent.

It's been nearly a month since they stole one from me, I stopped using them the next week after several messages to them and no response. I've been back to see if the coin showed up, or a response given. Neither have happened. (FYI it's a payout from Slush, shows in coinexplorer, with correct wallet, doesn't show in account).
Now it looks like the site is down.  I believe the site has decayed due to negligence, rather than outright scam, but it seems like there's no point in doing business with them anymore.

Until today I had no problems when using MyBitcoin. Sending and receiving BTC worked out the way it should. What I am trying to say: maybe it was just a bug, not a scam. Not answering to support requests–which you said they haven't–is a sad thing nevertheless. At the very moment it appears the site is down for some reason but I guess it'll be up in a few <insert-guess-here>.

Did they have a terms and condition on their site? Did they give their business address? A quick look a google cache seems to show nothing like that. Why would anyone trust such a site?

1000btc frozen, lost or stolen by MyBitcoin?

By Todd Bethell

On 12 July 2011, 1000btc MtGox to MyBitcoin.
On 28 July 2011, 1000btc MyBitcoin to MtGox.

28 June 2011, payment notification was received. 8hrs later (the site was still up) visual verification was done in account history of the transaction and correct address.
48 hrs later still no coins.

This is where I need a block explorer expert.
21 minutes after MyBitcoin received the btc block explorer shows the coins from that wallet being split and transmitted hundreds of times all the way down to 1 Satoshi.
Question:
1.   Is this normal or a sign of fraud making it impossible to track?
2.   Are all wallets effectively used as ‘pool wallets’ for payouts?
3.   While I am not accusing MyBitcoin of theft, itn’t plosible that

Approximately 8hrs later the coins had not been credited to my MtGox account. MyBitcoin was still up. My account history showed the coins had been sent and the sent to address was verified correct.
Security Note: The instant before clicking the send button (perhaps when my mouse hovered over it) I notice a screen blink or something changed, but it was too late to avoid clicking the button.

Q1. Has my computer been compromised such that the send address was swapped at the last instant?
Q2. If this is so, how could the correct address be recorded in the MyBitcoin data base?
Q3. Is it coincidence that the MyBitcoin service has gone down for 48hrs with nary a peep from its owner? A person who was very proactive and vocal during the MtGox incident.
Q4. I’m hard pressed to think of a technical reason how or why a transaction confirmation bot would send confirmation of btc transmission before such a transmission had actually occurred. Let alone consciously programmed in this way. It would seem that the bot was part of the book keeping data base and not confirming actual transmission from a ‘hot’ wallet.
Q5. It seems that the way MyBitcoins was using the wallets of its members (pooling them as a matter of operational efficiency or draining them as a scam??) this makes it impossible to track coins or analyze if they are insolvent?
Q6. Was my 1000btc withdrawal lower to water level in his 'hot wallet' enough to show Tom was swimming without a suit? In other words, for whatever reason, he was operating insolvent?

I would not normally keep so many coins in an on-line wallet but this was in preparation for a business transaction that was delayed.

I am preparing a blog and forum post or lessons learned and recommendations going forward:

There was a big sale of 10000 btc that seem to have been dumped at the cheapest price (5am UTC). It looks like an odd sale to me.

If it was the owner of MyBitcoin, wouldn't he used the Darknet (or darkpool...etc).

There is no darkpool at Mt. Gox anymore.

Before anyone else starts ANOTHER thread about this, please realize that the UABB is already spearheading a legal and unbiased investigation into MyBitcoin.com but needs your support. Discussion about MyBitcoin.com is very healthy for the sharing of ideas and suggestions on how to tackle this very serious and difficult problem, but nothing will be done about it through forum posts.

Please start contributing to the actual investigation by adding your affidavit, attaching evidence of funds lost, and contributing to the fund to pay for international investigators. Thank you.

I thought previous spammers were bad... 20+ posts saying the SAME THING?

Stop, just stop.  Anyone and everyone who cares about their bitcoins stuck in mybitcoin has seen or will see your post.  They don't need to read it two dozen times.
