Yeah I'd be very careful with them.  I might think about using them if they went on the bitcoin show and talked about it.  From what I understand bruce offered a while back.

God dammit!

I just sent over 50BTC to Mybitcoin and the site disappears... AGAIN!

Fuck me for continuing to use this sporadic service.

Why the fuck can't they give a heads up before dropping off the face of the map!?

Quite a lot has been said about this "service" already. I'm surprised anyone is still using it for anything.

EDIT:

Mybitcoin.com DO NOT have a MX-record, so the "abuse@mybitcoin.com"-email is bogus.
Quote
jine@srv:~$ host -tANY mybitcoin.com
mybitcoin.com has SOA record ns1.systemdns.com. hostmaster.systemdns.com. 8675317 10800 3600 1209600 3600

mybitcoin.com name server ns3.systemdns.com.
mybitcoin.com name server ns2.systemdns.com.
mybitcoin.com name server ns1.systemdns.com.

jine@srv:~$ host -tMX mybitcoin.com
mybitcoin.com has no MX record

I would suggest contacting http://domainhelp.opensrs.net/ as well, and explain the situation.

Good that you posted this info (although good luck getting ahold of anyone there).

Just thought I'd mention that the lack of an MX record you mentioned doesn't necessarily mean the email address is bogus. If no MX record is given, it defaults to the A record:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MX_record#History_of_fallback_to_A

So that could just mean that that one server hosting the site is also the mailserver for that domain.

Post by: Jine on July 30, 2011, 03:48:13 AM
Yeah, possible... the point was that as long as the site is down - the e-mail is.
So it's no need to jump to any conclusions due to lack of e-mail responses.

I'm still believing its a maintenance thing like last time, but seriously.. not cool.

Well you can't say I didn't warn you (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26224.0)!  You can expect people to come through here and accuse you of lying, asking for proof as if to imply you are making all this up (for some mysterious reason), or mocking you for being so careless (and that part would be true, ahem.)

Can somebody besides me ask that flake Bruce Wagner to stop promoting Mybitcoin on his bitcoinme site?  New people are getting hurt by this and bitcoin's reputation is getting hurt as well.  Challenge any of these veteran people when they promote Mybitcoin in their literature or interviews.  Boycott any business that uses mybitcoin as a wallet.  Best of all: build a better site!

Even though I lost 25 BTC, I'm not really mad.
I kind of blame myself for leaving that much on a public site.
What I'm mad at, is that I can't use their SCI for selling game servers. :P

1000btc frozen, lost or stolen by MyBitcoin?

By Todd Bethell

On 12 July 2011, 1000btc MtGox to MyBitcoin.
On 28 July 2011, 1000btc MyBitcoin to MtGox.

28 June 2011, payment notification was received. 8hrs later (the site was still up) visual verification was done in account history of the transaction and correct address.
48 hrs later still no coins.

This is where I need a block explorer expert.
21 minutes after MyBitcoin received the btc block explorer shows the coins from that wallet being split and transmitted hundreds of times all the way down to 1 Satoshi.
Question:
1.   Is this normal or a sign of fraud making it impossible to track?
2.   Are all wallets effectively used as ‘pool wallets’ for payouts?
3.   While I am not accusing MyBitcoin of theft, itn’t plosible that

Approximately 8hrs later the coins had not been credited to my MtGox account. MyBitcoin was still up. My account history showed the coins had been sent and the sent to address was verified correct.
Security Note: The instant before clicking the send button (perhaps when my mouse hovered over it) I notice a screen blink or something changed, but it was too late to avoid clicking the button.

Q1. Has my computer been compromised such that the send address was swapped at the last instant?
Q2. If this is so, how could the correct address be recorded in the MyBitcoin data base?
Q3. Is it coincidence that the MyBitcoin service has gone down for 48hrs with nary a peep from its owner? A person who was very proactive and vocal during the MtGox incident.
Q4. I’m hard pressed to think of a technical reason how or why a transaction confirmation bot would send confirmation of btc transmission before such a transmission had actually occurred. Let alone consciously programmed in this way. It would seem that the bot was part of the book keeping data base and not confirming actual transmission from a ‘hot’ wallet.
Q5. It seems that the way MyBitcoins was using the wallets of its members (pooling them as a matter of operational efficiency or draining them as a scam??) this makes it impossible to track coins or analyze if they are insolvent?
Q6. Was my 1000btc withdrawal lower to water level in his 'hot wallet' enough to show Tom was swimming without a suit? In other words, for whatever reason, he was operating insolvent?

I would not normally keep so many coins in an on-line wallet but this was in preparation for a business transaction that was delayed.

I am preparing a blog and forum post or lessons learned and recommendations going forward:

If anyone has further information please post it here and send to my email also, or give me a call.

We need to raise funds to send the most badass member of the Bitcoin community on a secret mission to Nevis to hunt down Tom Williams!

Maybe you can send John Doe.

We have a lot of bitcoin there..... ( as has already been reported in the press )...    Many -- perhaps most -- non-technical people... and businesses, I know and associate with,....  rely on MyBitcoin.com

Most of my friends and family and associates.... all have all their bitcoin there too.

I hope it is back up tomorrow.

Uh oh. We need The Bitcoin Device ASAP so people can both use bitcoin while being nontechnical and not have to rely on some anonymous third party. Here's my suggestion for The Bitcoin Device: https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=28923

There needs to be a better way to store your bitcoins if you are not technically savvy. I was affected by the mt. gox hack and never ever leave my bitcoins or funds on their servers.

Anyone know what happened to mybitcoin.com in regards to why they are down?

Only a "serious bug" (transactions to the bitcoin network didn't get processed) was reported a few hours before it went offline.

One should store one's bitcoin in an offline wallet.  Using an online wallet service defeats bitcoin's beautiful purpose (that its decentralized and not seizable).

Hopefully, fund losses to centralized exchanges and deposit services are minimal.

WTF is going on ?
Is this some kind of coordinated attack, or just coincidence ? I find it hard to believe in coincidences.

FYI, Bitomat.pl was the largest Polish exchange, and simultaneously 3rd in the world.

Given the number of businesses in rush-to-market mode in the bitcoin community - I'd say coincidence.
Security and business processes across most Bitcoin start-ups are likely to be immature.

This sort of thing is disappointing, but shouldn't be a complete surprise.
It's only made worse by the fact that it's such an adversarial environment to operate in.
Not only are there competing services, but the systems effectively hold 'cash' on their hard drives, which of course attracts the cyber bandits.

not saying scamming is good, but you guys reminded me of a beautiful quote (seen it the comments of some bitcoin related blog article):

Quote
To me the Wild West is a place of great opportunity, fierce competition, and unencumbered innovation. Of course, the flip side is that in Wild West you face risks and dangers that are absent in the old economy. You are responsible for your own protection against those dangers. Fail to protect yourself, and you will probably get pwned. There will be no nannies you can run crying to, and nobody will bail you out. But as long as you take the necessary precautions to minimize those risks, the Wild West can be a hugely rewarding place to be.

This changes nothing about Bitcoin, and in fact this risk has been here all along and, aside from the fact that Bitcoin is the commodity in question, happens with every other thing under the sun. It should, however, shake your confidence in online wallet services.

paid by who? afaik mybitcoin did not charge anything, there was no income to support dedicated staff.
if it is a one man show and someone else did his homework and visited him first, he might have been hijacked. attack vector via the site operator, hope he is alive.

otoh after their previous poblems with server performance and not being accessible few weeks ago (mid June, site was up but login did not work) he at least wrote a few lines note about the ongoing upgrade on the first page which worked back then. what is strange is that the June maintenance was about adding servers and it looks like they only use 1 ip address. this should not be a problem to arranche a load balancing device that would mask the whole bunch of servers behind one address, it's just strange that not even the first page shows up. hope it's just a technical problem still and the site operator is on vacation not knowing about the problem.

https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=17411.0 the June thread

Pretty please let hope that. And I am going to find a better service.

One man operation, no dedicated support staff is not worth the freebies.

It was never suppose to be an "investment" it is  suppose to be a parallel option to traditional printed money, where you pay other users fees instead of massive evil banks.

True, that  was my assumption, based on the cliche of a smart programmer who started a site and when it became popular and heavy duty, s/he was not prepared for that.
I never noticed the text ads. Taking the number of users/visitors into account, this could have been a source of income to cover the operation costs of the service.

And maybe it's Satoshi and Tom Williams is just another pseudonym and this is a lesson about centralizing stuff in a decentralized system. Last time someone was pointing with a finger to MtGox (for the same reason, too big, too central) and suggested a DDoS to prove his point, he suddenly became very unpopular and when a DDoS happened, he was forced out of business. If not forced, at leas he earned lot of hate speech. I dont believe Tom and Satoshi are the same collective but wouldn't it be ironic?

I just have a "free" IP address, from my VPS location service.
It's not linked to a VPS yet.

---------------------------

$ ping 78.47.46.46
PING 78.47.46.46 (78.47.46.46) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 78.47.46.46 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1002ms
$ host 78.47.46.46
46.46.47.78.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer static.78-47-46-46.clients.your-server.de.

---------------------------

So the host is down (not linked to a server), but the IP is still resolved.

We all have learned our lessons regarding bitcoin.

The community learned that bitcoin is real shit and we better treat all real shit like it's supposed be treated, with care.

Bitcoin isn't going to simply make us rich unless we treat it like an asset.

Despite a few recent problems - the mybitcoin name was big enough that it would have had some serious value as a legitimate sale.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to run off with that much bitcoin - when it'll be hard to offload any time soon without bringing the exchange price down.
If he's that bullish on bitcoin that he's willing to take a slow payout by dribbling the booty into the exchanges.. then surely he'd be bullish enough to realize the potential value of mybitcoin as a legitimate sale.

Even if there was something approaching 1Million USD in BTC there... it strikes me as a dumb move to go the illegitimate way.

I think the site got hit big time after the Mt. gox hack and the guy quit after that.  Lots of warnings such as this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=26224.0

That noone heeded.  Actually the OP was having to defend himself in many instances.

Well you could be right... I'm saying is that it seems a little odd that it would be a scam.

Even if the guy stuffed up a bit and was operating with somewhat less BTC than deposited - there would be a legitimate way out.
1)Resecure it,
2)offer it up for sale - (I'm sure you could have got some serious coin for it even just a week ago)
3)use part of the proceeds to top the balances back up.
4)Profit.

Port 9999 is open on mybitcoin's server 83.149.112.133
So its not down, or hung, nor is it a httpd crash (that would give a closed port), someone purposely put up a firewall to block all the other ports.

If anyone who has lost a money in it the only hope you have of getting it back is to quickly get a court order in Netherlands for the hosting provider leaseweb to freeze the contents of his server and hopefully the BTC can be recovered.

Hmm.  A court order from Holland, didn't think of that.  Was thinking filing an injunction in Federal court in the U.S. would be the way to go.  Leaseweb is a Netherlands Company, Nevis is in the Commonwealth under the UK, according to wikipedia page.  But leaseweb also has a U.S. office.

http://www.leaseweb.com/en/about-us/contact (http://www.leaseweb.com/en/about-us/contact)

Looking at block explorer for all the transactions I had with mybitcoin, the money gets sent to my mybitcoin address, then immediately gets sent to another address internally by mybitcoin, then there is a series of internal transfers.  It is too complicated to follow by hand, someone would need to write a script to track where all the btc went.

In any case, it should be possible with a little scripting to trace every last satoshi to where it is now using blockexplorer.  This should be done ASAP, so we know where he put all the stolen btc.  Then we can program a hook into the bitcoin p2p network to find out the IP address connecting with the addresses with the stolen btc, find out where he is (by subpoena), and send in the goon squad.

So the solution as I see it is to

1) file a class action suit to
2) get an injunction, while
3) programmers write script to find out address where btc are, and
4) work on a program to get IP address when bitcoin client with that address connects, so that
5) subpoena identity info of IP address, so that
6) goon squad can physically restrain "Tom Williams" or whoever to prevent further conversion of the ill-gotten gains while case proceeds in court

Now whether the suit is in the Netherlands or the U.S.A. that's an open question, and someone is going to need to pony up for a lawyer willing and able to do all this legal work, probably on a contingent basis, with little hope of reward.  :(

I only lost about 40 - 60 btc (don't remember exactly) so it is cheaper and easier for me to just post this bit of advice and walk away.

i don't think that would work since they can get mashed together with 'good' coins.

i.e. put two satoshis (one 'stolen' and one 'good') in a blender and mix on high until you have 0.00000002 btc, then separate them again by spending 1 satoshi to 2 different people... which satoshi is the 'stolen' one?

I think the site got hit big time after the Mt. gox hack and the guy quit after that.

Probably the most likely explanation. MyBitcoin may have reacted too slowly after the MtGox hack, and a number of their wallets were subsequently hacked with the usernames / passwords from the MtGox user list. They knew they couldn't refund those wallets, so they decided to just make a run.

Makes perfect sense to me.

While any decent business should move fast to protect it's customers in such a situation... would mybitcoin technically be liable for this?
Using the same password on multiple sites would often violate the terms of service - and put the fault for any loss squarely on the user.

In such a situation the operator could just refuse to take responsibility. They could also do something like agree to pay half back over time out of future profits if they wanted to try to claw back some good will from those affected.

edit: It doesn't make perfect sense to me.  The operator could have taken a hard-nosed attitude and kept mybitcoins running.
For a catastrophic hack for which mybitcoins is obviously at fault, it would make sense that a certain type of operator might just run.. but not just because a few users had compromised passwords due to a completely external issue.

Legally, they might be have been able to just sit back and relax, they wouldn't necessarily have been held liable for the damage. But do you think they would want to go through the investigations including the usual authorities? Did they pay their taxes? Do you think they really did everything the way they should have? I mean, look at it, they did a lot to cover their identity and catered to a community of Tor users, they obviously never wanted to deal with authorities in the first place.

They faced two alternatives:
a) painstakingly explaining what happened, why they didn't prevent it from happening, why they didn't run their business the way you should "normally" run it
b) wave a "bite my shiny metal a**" good bye to the crowd, Bender style  ;D

This is all just wild speculation on my part, though, and the real story may have been completely different. I honestly don't know.

Exactly what authorities did they need to worry about?  Certainly not those in Nevis.  It's an off-shore haven which doesn't even require the identities of the owners to be disclosed when an LLC is formed, and any lawsuits against a Nevis LLC pretty much require a Nevis court to grant a lien against the company's assets.  There is no requirement that the owners of a Nevis LLC reside in Nevis.  And there are no local taxes payable on money earned outside of Nevis. Intentionally or otherwise, they've chosen to incorporate somewhere which makes pursuing any claims against them difficult

Exactly what authorities did they need to worry about?

Whatever authorities are applicable where they conduct business. For example, here in Germany, it simply doesn't matter if your webserver and /or your company mailbox is located in Tuvalu, Nigeria, the Caymans, or on Sealand. You'll have to explain what you did to local authorities if you were offering a service to a local person.
I don't know where the guy(s) behind mybitcoin live, but the same may apply for them, depending on their local jurisdiction.

they've chosen to incorporate somewhere which makes pursuing any claims against them difficult

Absolutely.

The thing is that we don't really know who "they" are, much less where they're actually located.  There's no reason to believe that they've registered the LLC in the name of the actual owners, and it's unlikely that their agent is going to disclose the identities of the owners - no foreign authorities have the jurisdiction to compel them to do so, and Nevis authorities are going to be totally uninterested unless they've committed actual offences under Nevis law.  It's possible that they have no assets located in Nevis either.

Realistically, even if someone who has lost Bitcoins can get their local authorities involved, there's a strong likelihood that any investigation will reach a dead end.

Anyone else notice there is no MX record?  How was email to domain addresses supposed to be delivered?

MX records are not necessary for mail delivery.  They are only needed in complex domains, or when backup servers are desired.

Sorry, this comes from sifting through pages and pages of newbies posting "MyBItcoin is a scam!" threads. I realize that discussion is the first step, but as no one seems to be taking any action, it is pretty obvious that these forums not organized enough to actually get involved in an investigation without someone making the first step.

There's no reason to believe this was a one man show or that there was no support staff. Income was generated by text ads.

Satoshi could have mined 100's of bitcoins in 2010 if he wanted, and maybe he did. No point in running a scam worth a few hundreds of btc.

EDIT:

Mybitcoin.com DO NOT have a MX-record, so the "abuse@mybitcoin.com"-email is bogus.
Quote
jine@srv:~$ host -tANY mybitcoin.com
mybitcoin.com has SOA record ns1.systemdns.com. hostmaster.systemdns.com. 8675317 10800 3600 1209600 3600
mybitcoin.com has address 83.149.112.133
mybitcoin.com name server ns3.systemdns.com.
mybitcoin.com name server ns2.systemdns.com.
mybitcoin.com name server ns1.systemdns.com.

jine@srv:~$ host -tMX mybitcoin.com
mybitcoin.com has no MX record

I would suggest contacting http://domainhelp.opensrs.net/ as well, and explain the situation.

That is incorrect. An MX record is not necessary to receive mail. When an MX record is not present, the A record is used. The only reason to set up an MX record, other than complying with simple standards of protocol politeness, is when setting up multiple servers with priorities.

The server isn't listening on port 25 - so the statement the 'email is bogus' isn't quite warranted - but it is certainly invalid/inactive at the moment.
Nobody can send email to any address under the mybitcoin.com domain.

I noticed this note on their homepage today:

Quote
Thursday, August 4th, 2011

From the desk of Tom Williams, operator of MyBitcoin.com

For immediate release.

As you have probably noticed, MyBitcoin.com had been down for almost a week due to an unfortunate event.

On Friday of last week we noticed that one of our pooled holding servers was missing a large amount of Bitcoins. After a prompt investigation we realized that the security of our SCI (Shopping Cart Interface) system had been breached by an unknown attacker.

Our response was rash, but necessary. We simply switched the system off until we could have system-wide forensics performed. The forensics took some time, as the system is quite complex by nature.

After weighing all of our options, we have realized that we have no option but to go into receivership. We will settle all accounts with a online claim process that we are currently in the process of working out.

We will release more detailed information about the security breach, the claim process, and our balance sheet in the next few days.

Tom Williams
