Title: Had a talk with my son today about my bitcoins
Post by: Linh Ga on April 19, 2018, 03:54:00 PM
I sat my 7yr old son down and showed him my ledger nano and how to use it in case anything ever happens to me.
I explained there is electronic money on it and it will be his one day. Went through the process of wiping it and restoring with the seed. But reminded him never ever tell anyone about it is our secret.

He's a smart kid and was amazed at how it's secured by an extremely complex code and that no one can steal the money you can take it anywhere and it's safer than a bank because the ledger is a bank itself (i know that's not quite correct but still). I didn't tell him how much are on there but told him one day it will be extremely valuable that's why I'm telling him about it is for him when he grows up.

Later that day we talked about how to secure the seed and printing it on a metal plate. He thinks it is so cool.

It amazed me how a child instantly understood it and showed how cryptos are for the future generations not us. We are early adopters so buy at least 1 bitcoin for your kids. Just might set them up for life.

My 8 year old knew about bitcoin from playing "Bitcoin Billionaire" on iOS. I looked at the game and laughed but the concept of mining with a computer were there along with a knowledge of digital currency as a replacement for money.

Man, you are so right about future generations who will be main users of cryptocurrencies. Thanks for idea about securing my crypto assets for my kids. I think I will do it as well.

Hide your keys from your son. Do not create a situation where he could give those keys to friends via peer pressure. Kids at a young age are very easily convinced by older peers that they are doing nothing wrong.

Educate your son on this, and maybe consider splitting your wallet among multiple keys. I personally have 2 Trezor devices and one Ledger. Looking at a 4th. Each member of my family has a copy of specific keys (or partial sets of keys where they need to unite to unlock the cryptocurrency). This is so no single hiccup can clean me out.

Good luck, and I'm glad your son is learning!

Don't know if it's a good idea...
I mean : Is money something understandable for kids? And what about an alt money?
I think a paper wallet with his name on it is a better way to transfer this "secret" ^^

Its always a good idea to teach them early. They would know the value of having it and losing it as well. It will teach them early about the business specially that this will definitely replace money in the future. Also teach them the value of keeping ang securingbsomething important

Indeed, today there are far more opportunities to provide for their children than before. Our parents didn't have as many tools to earn as we have now!
You're doing well, I'm sure that your son will appreciate your concern in the future.

I would have thought any age below 12 would not be a good idea
but with hindsight and the op i realise the younger generations
are really digitally clued in, they are growing up in a digital age
and are surrounded by it.

Well done to the op

Children are more inclined to learn new things and are quicker to perceive.
Learn him more about the digital currency, how it works and by the age of 20th, he will be able to develop his own special program.

Um, was there no one more mature to inform about this?

There's no way I'd trust a seven year old with something like that. Their comprehension of it would be far from fully formed. The next thing you know he's showing it your neighbours when you're out and about.

When I was seven years old I was convinced my Dad had a million quid when in reality he had about a tenner in the bank.

really lucky you have a smart child, when you explain about your bitcoin quickly your child understands, of course things you do that is very good. we do not know how we are going forward, if we do not explain to our closest people now and let happen bad thing happened to us, surely the people closest you do not know the investment you have at that time.

You are a very lucky man, you have a nice and smart kid keep it up and teach him just good things.

When I was 7 I wasn't too good in everything just in school and that's it, now the new generation is getting better and better but we have to teach them how they need to use their brain not all the time with the eyes on the phone or pc they need some freedom sometimes.

Of course kids can learn fast and totally understand how money works. And they can understand even more naturally how the response to the money monster is cryptocurrencies.

It is not up to us to judge if the kid will show it to their friends or not... His father probably knows what he is doing.

Congrats bro, i would do the same!

I do not think i would understand these things when i was seven years old and as a kid if he is excited about what you tried to teach him he will tell everyone about his dad's secret money that could make him rich, he is too young to keep secrets anyway.  :P I do have kids but they are busy playing and they wont understand anything even if i try to teach them about bitcoin and it is not the right age to understand these things. :)

We have an advantage being an early adopter and sure it will make a difference in the future when it comes to economics and trade.

well that's much better for our children, because with we love to know about bitcoin to our children surely our children will be able to know how to earn income in bitcoin world and our children can also continue the business / assets that we have today
Make sure you teach them the importance of education rather than business and assets at this age. I would like to see kids enjoying their life rather than learning about economics and bitcoin, you cannot earn income without knowledge and education.

When I was 7 I wasn't too good in everything just in school and that's it, now the new generation is getting better and better but we have to teach them how they need to use their brain not all the time with the eyes on the phone or pc they need some freedom sometimes.
I do not agree with the fact that the new generation are getting better, they are living in a world surrounded by technology and it will have an adverse affect in future, when i was a kid we used to go out and play and now a days kids use video games, i do not think it is a healthy situation.

That is a good idea but for me a 7 year old is not yet responsible enough and could make mistakes. But that age is a good age wherein we could already teach him the knowledge about bitcoin and how to use it as well as its nature. But for me I dont want to risk my bitcoin to 7 year old, at this age I will only share knowledge but when he will turns 18 that is the time I will give him a bitcoin.

You have to slowly let your child understand the digital cryptocurrency!

Once it was hard for him to remember things that looked complicated!

Buy a BTC for your children and save it, and when they get married they can give them a wedding gift. It must be great!

This is a good idea considering that they are the potential future users of digital currencies. What I only can say that you need to be careful in sharing him your keys because he might pressured by his friends or older peers and he might give it to them.  Educate him the best way you can so that he will be also a responsible and a successful user of bitcoin in the future.  Good luck!

It is good to share them your knowledge so that they can adapt to these modern advancements easily and smoothly but be careful on sharing him your knowledge and some of your keys.  He might use it for certain purposes that you didn't know.  Educate him the best way you can.  Hoping he will be also successful in this field.

it's complicated that will make your child more curious and want to solve it. in fact my son who is now 16 years old can already buy his own car. I always taught him that complicated complex first so he would think hard and do not easily give up if given a heavy work. everyone has different ways to teach his child about bitcoin.

Wow. It's amazing that at a young age, your son is able to understand such thing about money especially cryptocurrency. I hope that when he gets older, he would be able to remember that and follow the instructions you have told him. Actually, there are other opinions from this thread that has also a point like, kids often get into trouble through peer pressure. I hope that won't happen to your child. But as you have mentioned, he is a smart kiddo so I think he wouldn't do anything regarding what you taught him that would disappoint you. And you're right. Bitcoin might set them up for life.

It would be a very good move educating your child about cryptocurrency but I don't think that its a very smart move telling your child about your private keys since as we all know 7 years old is not that mature enough to understand how important private keys are. It depends on every child though but most of them are not really good in keeping secrets since most of the children are always telling the truth and they can be persuaded by adults to disclose your private keys buy giving them something that they really want and that interests them like things, toys, food or anything that they are fond of. Atleast tell them when they are already in their teens or atleast 18 years old or just disclose your private keys to your wife or another member of the family that you trust the most.

It's a great thing that you are discussing it with your kid and I am sure with these efforts, he will feel much confident and familiar in the coming decades as we are heading towards decentralized era.

seed and printing it on a metal plate.

However, I would advice you thinking again in this regard because it is not recommended to make even a single digital copy of seed key. You never know which program might pull it from your computer. Precaution is better than cure, don't you think so?

That is so cool!! Every time I come across youth, I get inspired by their young vibes and energetic behaviors. It's so good to see them bubbling with lively thoughts and budding with fresh n innovative ideas. I love to interact with them and share their point of views. It adds to my level of knowledge.

Your 7 year kid is too cool man!! It is good to hear something of this sort that how our youth is going to carry the legacy we will leave behind for them. Whatever we do today is going to be a bequest for thee coming generations. So let us leave something innovative for them to do wonders in the coming time.

7 years is early. At 15, the blood will boil. And it is not known where to delay. I would say that there is money, but I have not told all the secrets yet. And, if you are not sure about your future, you would leave somewhere a hint about it (in your favorite place). In general, it's up to you. But of course, we must think about the future. not only live one day.

It's a good idea that you explained about cryptos to your son at his early age. If I will have my own child someday, I will love to do it also. I will explain bitcoin to him/her little by little and if my child reach the right age and can fully understand then I think that's the time to share the real secret (private keys).

My son is 4 years old.  While I did not tell him about Bitcoin and Crypto-currency.  But I think that at the age of 7 years, a child can understand much already.  I hope that in a few years the study of blockchain will be introduced into the school curriculum.  If not, then in the world there will be many developmental activities for children on this topic.

We can't deny that children in today's generation are fully updated and technological oriented. They can easily adapt what we will teach to them using internet amd gadgets. There are children that are mentally wise than their own parents and you are lucky because you have a son that has a curiosity about cryptocurrency. For a 7 year old kid, playing games are their priorities but look at your child, he has a big question mark about the trend. It means that your child is a future millionaire.

It is good to see how a little child is interesting about nano ledger. It seems like he was curious about cryptocurrency and it is a good choice that you let him to know about this stuff. As a parent, we should let our childrens to be aware about this, we must teach on how to use cryptocurrency in order for them not to become an ignorant someday. But we need to control them, we must control our facts and lesson for them in crypto because they should learn it in gradual process. Everything takes time and we must wait till there's an opportunity to say it to them.

I think they should be really get involved and get curious about these things because this will enable them to think deeper in life. It is like making them responsible for they will have a little job as we say. And also it is not bad buying them bitcoin because bitcoin has its price growing in a long span of time, maybe when he is a grown man he remembers it and bitcoin's price is far beyond its price right now right. It can help them in countless of ways.

It's right that you teach your children the right attitude to money.Modern children very quickly learn new information They are always interested in everything new. I think that in 7 years the child will not understand what bitcoin or blockchain is.When he grows up, maybe he'll be interested. And maybe Vice versa.

Although the child is very intelligent and has understood everything perfectly, I think it would be a good idea to write the instructions on paper and keep this paper in a safe place.

Or you can place it in a volt in a secret place where you two only knew where it is. Your son was indeed an easy and fast learner. Though, you have to keep in mind that there are still consequences later on for telling him about it since curiosity took him in.

I believe strong foundation and knowledge about cryptocurrencies will start the future of our children. Instilling it with their mind at an early age will surely contributes to this kind of technology offered by crypto. Your advice hooked me up. I shall buy at least 1 or 2 bitcoin for my child and let it store until she grows up. We may not know how much it will cost in the next years.

that was a crazy decision to tell your kid about the electronic money
he is not mature enough to understand it and you run a risk of losing your coins because of that
in my eyes cons outweigh the pros in this case quite heavily
not even talking about the security risks,a kid could boast about it,someone could use him to take that Nano of yours under any pretext etc.
seven year olds cannot be trusted with such info, but you can an should educate him about bitcoins and money without endagering your life savings

This is a great thing you have done for your son. If you do not teach your children about bitcoin and how it works they may learn it from peer group in a negative way. Just make sure he do not have access to it now because children like experimenting.

Man, you are so right about future generations who will be main users of cryptocurrencies. Thanks for idea about securing my crypto assets for my kids. I think I will do it as well.
Introducing bitcoin towards new generation is such a brilliant idea. We cant deny that this kids will surely have a potential to become a successful person in the future by the help of bitcoin. Introducing them bitcoin early will decrease their curiousness about bitcoin because they will have a little knowledge about it. We should introduce them bitcoin in a way that they will surely understand what we are talking all about. We should teach them one step at a time so that their knowledge and ideas about it will not be scramble.

That's nice talking to your son about your bitcoins or how much you've earned for using bitcoin and he got an idea if he's playing his bitcoin old age. but he can start now to accumulate a lot of bitcoins.

These days the kids were very smart to grab technology based learning in a much shorter time period. Most of the kids easily gets adopted to it as well, which makes the future usage of digital assets much more than the present. At any instance they need to be taught about the technology, should never force to learn which is not right.

Now children are smart beyond their years. I have no idea what will happen in 10-15 years. I hope that by this time I will have already made a small, and better, big capital to also teach children to use the opportunities of this market. I know for sure that it will be easy for them. The analogy with mobile devices comes to mind. Perhaps the younger generation will create something revolutionary in the crypto industry, which will make the market even more interesting and profitable. The main thing is to approach the training of the child wisely, so that he did not slip all the means in the first few years. It is better to just talk about the cryptocurrency, but do not show where it is stored and how much it lies.
