Post by: grknondr on April 21, 2018, 01:24:15 AM
Hi. We all have too many passwords, private keys, adresses, registration informations. I want to askt how you keep them. I dont ask you to explain where you put your ledger wallet  ;D  For example, I keep my passwords and private keys on a simple document which I created on my laptop. This means that if I lose my computer or someone stoles it, I may lose too many things. What are your solutions? Is there any safe option? I have to get precautions before it is too late.

I have a portable hard drive, I copied my information into it but I carry it in laptop case. So, loss of computer means loss of partable device as well. I need to buy one more device to use for crypto informations. At first I was thinking to keep a copy into my email account but it one of the most dangerous way I think.

I use hardware wallet so i'm alright for some of my coins because the key is stored in the wallet itself, but for the one that isn't supported by nano ledger, i save the key in a document which then i save in flashdrive so it's save from hacker. Hope in the future that they will support all kind of crypto assets so it's become more important to have hardware wallet.

It's simply hiding all your private informations like private key and account address, without showing to someone untrusted person. You should also provide a personal gadgets and don't let anybody used your personal gadgets. And be sure to have a duplicate on your wallet key and account address.

Backing up your wallet is very important.  After doing so, keep the back up devices in different physical locations.  It's no good if you keep them all in your house and it get's burned down.

have a copy on your external memory like flashdrives that is the best that you can do or else you can make a dummy account on facebook messenger for you to send all those infos to that acct, you can access that anywhere even you forgot your external memory.

Wallet copies on a heavily protected NAS with additional copies on flash drives stored in a fireproof safe.  All passwords, private/public keys, code words, etc also printed out and stored in the safe.

As a matter of fact, I save everything on cloud using Apple ICloud. I believe in saving on air, for the fact that I can get it anywhere, anytime as far as I need it. I use google drive as alternative, of which my google account is absolutely secured up to an extent I trust too

I bought a hardware wallet, which would protect my digital assets.
Because the hardware wallet doesn't need networking, it won't be stolen.

If your computer ever gets compromised or damaged, your private keys would be in jeopardy. You could write your private keys on a piece of paper and store it in a home safe or safety deposit box at a bank.

It so simple, just write in paper or book so you will always has the physical backup data. Cryptocurrency users should responsible with any data to open access to their funds, since most of cryptocurrency maximum amount is limited then all users should take care of their coin.

Merge all in one note then copy it , and create some back up through safe place which is no one know and also incase of some causes dont just make one copy,  create more copies about your private information to ensure even what happens you can still recover you important account.

If you have more encryption assets, it is recommended that you use hardware cold purse, which is the safest. I only use online wallet for a while, because I often do transactions. Some passwords will also be recorded in paper, copied in notebooks, which is not easy to forget.

I store a lot of things only on paper, I understand that it's stupid and uncomfortable, but it's better than lose everything in a couple of minutes. They hack you and steal it all away

In my house is an old computer, which I turn on once a year, that it stores all my passwords and stuff. I think that you should buy a flash drive, and write down your personal data on it and store it where it will not be stolen and you will not lose.

If you have money to buy a hardware wallet that is best.I don't have one.So I bought 2 cheap flash drives($10/each).I have the copy of everything on my computer and 2 flash drives. One of them I keep it by myself.which everything in a locked zip and one flash drive on my family locker. That is simple. That's my idea. And one more thing don't keep it secret tell everything you have to one of your family member cause no one knows what gonna happen next moment and your crypto may value mln dollars (at least 5 digits).Thanks.

Apart from storing vital information like my private key, passwords and other details on my PC, i also make use of a diary, in order to be on a safer side. It is always good to write most of these things down and keep in a very safe place. Peradventure you do not like writing, you can print some of this info out and keep in a safe place.

One of the option is to save it in the extra real drive and other one is to write down and save it in the locker . Thus in case if you need to handover or create a backup for yourself you can let them know about it and securely it will be safe as well .

if you have a recovery phrase you could hide it in a dictionary(file format), as long as you have some type of pattern.
say you have 1,000 words in a file, 10 per line.

Pick some type of format, say number: 2 8 (you could make it as long as you want, just for simplicity I pick 2):
then maybe pick a number(or a number format), like every fifth line.

on line 1, the 2nd word is your first recovery word.
on line 5, the 8th word is your second word.
on line 10, the 2nd word is your third.. etc

obviously you can make it as advanced as you want.
this way you can upload it everywhere, aslong as only you know the numbers.

of course you could also just encrypt a file containing your key, using a password instead..  :-X

Your crypto details are very sensitive details as they hold your investments and all your hard work, keeping them safe should be your priority. thy are better off stored in paper wallets and safely locked away, or in an external harddisk that only you have

I'm securing my crypto information by si.ply not letting anyone knows it even my family. Aside from that, I'm enabling two factor authentication on my every accounts just in case someone will know my password. I'm also using a ledger to keep some of my coins if ever some exchange sites will be hacked.

The best method is to write that information in two separated papers and hide these papers in safe places. You can keep one paper inside a book and the other on your nightstand.

A recovery seed is your best friend when you lose your paper, hardware, or mobile wallet, as it’s the only way you can recover your funds and wallet. So, to prevent total bitcoin and cryptocurrency loss, it’s crucial to record your recovery seed somewhere safe. It is highly recommended you back up your crypto wallets recovery phrase if you have not done so already.

I believe the safest way is to keep it all on a separate hard drive away from the computer or device you use to make transactions or investments, and also keeping a hard wallet for making the actual transactions.

Whether you choose a hardware, software or paper wallet to manage your passwords and private keys, there are a handful of things you can do to keep your stash safer. These include:
- Be super careful with any online service -- any device connected to the internet is vulnerable
- Encrypt your wallet with a strong password
- Make regular backups and store them in multiple locations
- Use multisignature security, which helps maintain control of your coins even if one of your devices is compromised
- Generate, write down and hide your wallet's mnemonic seed - a group of words you can use to restore your wallet in the event of a hardware failure

I usually do not store anything online. I make sure that whatever happens, I would keep them somewhere safe like putting them all on a single txt file and transfer it to a flash drive. As for IMToken, I should write those mnemonic words on a piece of paper, then copy the words in order in the txt file and save it somewhere safe. Don’t ever trust any online service out there, because they have the control to shut down the database and may lose all of your private important information. Just my two satoshis.

I back up all my files to an online storage in case I lose my files. I also keep a copy in my device for easier access. But in everything I do, I ensure that I keep my computer secure. I've suffered some malware attacks recently, but I knew about it on time before it got out of hand.

I am keeping my passwords on my laptop in the document with the password. I know its not the best way, but I am thinking about additional small trick I can do. There is one way how to “encrypt” your passwords. Lets say you write down the password, but when you use it you use it without last letter. For example you write down: PASSWORD, but your real password is actually: PASSWOR. You just skip last letter, or first for example. There are many ways how to “encrypt”. You can change all “a” to “@” as another example. So in your records the password will be “ PASSWORD” when in fact it’s “P@SSWORD”. This way you can be still safe even if somebody get access to you files

Cryptocurrency has so many risk of scams, so you need to be very cautious regarding your wallet, bitcoins, and recovery seed in order to keep your recovery seed as safe and secure as possible.

Don’t wait too long to record your recovery seed. Instead, when you are presented with it, write it down and store it away somewhere safe immediately. Paper is one of the most secure ways to handle and store critical data.

You might want to consider is having a device that’s solely dedicated to cryptocurrency activities. This means just one PC or mobile device used for only buying and selling cryptos. For instance, hackers are becoming smart at stealthily dropping keyloggers –apps that track the keys you type as well as the sites you visit- on to your device. So, when you type in your password, these keyloggers send the information back to the hacker who then uses it to get into your account and transfer your assets.

It should be understood that it is not recommended to store large amounts of bitcoins on any exchange, as the risk of loss or hacking is always present. So, instead of keeping your bitcoins on an exchange, consider setting up a safe wallet which you own the private keys to.

Never login to your cryptocurrency account using a public wi-fi. Read that three times and let that sink in for a moment. Not only is it easy for people to snoop on and interrupt data packets sent on public Wi-Fi connections, they can actually setup a Wi-Fi router and collect all the information that passes through their routers.

Honestly, you can use extra strong passwords with a minimum of fifteen characters, including upper and lower cases, numbers, alphabets and other characters. Also, avoid using names, words that can be found in the dictionary or anywhere for that matter, as there are hacking tools with these dictionaries embedded in them. Bottom line, make your password indecipherable by making it as incomprehensible as possible. The best passwords often look like gibberish.

If I were you, I would setup a two-factor authentication (2FA) system. This essentially means double layer protection on top of your passwords. So, if someone for instance, were to hack your account and wants to change your password, you would be notified via email, text messages and even an automated call.

If your cryptocurrency investment strategy involves buying and holding, you should first go with a core wallet. Whatever the case, never hold cryptocurrencies in exchanges if you aren’t actively trading. If you do this, your wallet is at risk of being hacked whenever hackers target specific exchange networks.

You should not carry around too much cryptocurrency in your mobile wallet. Mobile wallets are great for daily usage and carrying around some spending money. But they can be dangerous too if you ever get ambushed and are forced to relinquish whatever is in your wallet. Worse still, your phone could get stolen, and you lose access to all that “cash”.

I advise you to use virtual private networks (VPNs). A VPN creates a private tunnel over the open internet. The idea is that everything you send is encapsulated in this private communications channel and encrypted so -- even if your packets are intercepted -- they can't be deciphered. VPNs are very powerful and important tools to protect yourself and your data

I think you can use third party crypto security entities. If you don’t want to worry about the safety of these or you misplacing them, simply have these companies take care of them for you by getting their hardware wallets and storing all your data on there. Companies like Trezor, NanoLedger and LedgerHQ are pioneering the safe keeping of wallets and encryption keys.

There are a number of important safety and security practices that can help to protect your private keys and therefore protect your funds.

 1.  Secure Your Wallets

First, it is wise to find a wallet with security measures beyond the normal wallet providers. Some wallets are now using encryption to protect the private keys. Companies like Corion have created a code package that encrypts the key data and protects it from insider hacking.
2. Separate Your Funds, Use Cold Storage
3. Wi-fi Wisdom
Be careful about where you go online when you’re using a device that has a wallet on it. Dangerous websites and risky wi-fi networks put your wallet at risk. At the same time, do not leave your device unattended, or lend it to anyone.
4. Service Safety
If your device holding your wallet needs service, be sure to move the funds from the wallet before having service done. Further, it is wise to change wallets every few months in order to not allow the wallet security to grow thin over time.
5. Gone Phishing – Email and Web
Phishing scams are becoming more and more elaborate, make sure email received from wallet companies have their domain spelled correctly and never look for their web address clicking on Google ads. Once you send a phishing website your private key you can say goodbye to your funds.

This is one of the very basics of crypto: how to store your assets.

Absolutely do not listen to anyone else that tells you web, pc, or smartphone based wallets are ok.

The only two options are cold storage and hardware wallets.

A quick google will give you thousands of people with experiences where they got hacked and lost their crypto.
Now, try to find any that have had their stuff stolen when they had properly stored it using a physical solution (cold storage or hardware wallet).

The most hardcore of people will actually put their keys in a safe or a vault.
I haven't gone that far but I use a combination of cold storage and ledger nano.
For my daily trades I use my ledger, for my coins I am holding long term I use cold storage.

And here is one benefit of cold storage, if you are a true holder, you really just want to lock it away and forget about it for 6 months or more.
Having it accessible and watching the price constantly is just too stressful.

This is easy to do. You don't have to do so much to be safe. The internet and apps has made it easy for us. Simply allow your browser save them for you and use similar passwords for similar websites. For example I have same passwords for all my betting sites and for my crypto site investments I have same email and same passwords. So it's easy for me to easily recall what I used as my password than save it somewhere it can be seen by anyone.

Secure hardware wallets like Trezor or the Ledger Nano S cost about $100 or less and have a straightforward setup. You just choose a PIN number and a recovery "seed" (usually a set of words and numbers) in case you forget your PIN, or your wallet malfunctions. It's pretty robust security, so make sure you keep copies of your PIN and seed somewhere accessible to you, but not to home intruders.

I feel the best thing to do in order to keep all your security details is to store them in two to three flash drives, then keep each in different locations. By doing this , you should not be afraid of loosing your security details. Except that you will need to keep them away from those you do not trust. By also doing this, you are also keeping your crypto asset safe for whoever you feel should inherit it.

As we all are well aware of that many hackers always trying to penetrate in your computer so its not safe to store your important keys and password into the system. I saved all my details on papers and laminate it and have 2 copies in different different place. So that if bymistake I lost one paper I can use the second one and to be safer side one should always do safe browsing and I used to keep my valued coins in Trezor wallet.

I keep my crypto information secured by saving it to several flash drives. I never stored them in my computer hard drive because the may be a chance that hackers may invade them. It is easier for hackers to access files from a hard drive which is always connected to the internet.

I highly suggest that you keep it on a organizer. Write it in a paper if you want to make sure that your private key is safe but make sure that you have to keep it safe or else you will lost everything you have. Buying a portable harddrive with encryption/password is also a good choice or buy a USB drive that has an encryption installed.

You can keep your files in several ways. For instance, I chose to keep my records on whatsapp. I created a group to store all my information. As you know you can create a group with one person on whatsapp and later remove that person to remain only you in the group. Also, I do a daily backup to Google drive incase I lost my smartphone, I can easily retrieve it from there.

Although this is not a complete solution, the risk can be minimized by following instructions and taking into account any possible situation.

Keeping and safely securing your crypto information is crucial matter, by for my own opinion choose company with a decentralized financial system, DDC will break up the oligopoly controlling traditional financial institutions. Rather than bouncing off of each other with pricing structures, financial institutions will now have to compete in the free market by reducing prices across the board. A decentralized financial system will ensure that smaller banks also have a chance to compete while returning big banks earnings to users and providers of the banking services. with DCC you can control your own crypto informations without any worries.

Don't write out your private key to be stored on somewhere that can be connected to the internet. Good old fashioned pen and paper should become your best friends. You can also have a separated copy of that document because if it is better to have a plan b. maybe you can write it down on a diary or somewhere else.

For example, programmers are getting to be keen at stealthily dropping keyloggers – applications that track the keys you write and also the locales you visit-on to your gadget. Thus, when you compose in your secret word, these keyloggers send the data back to the programmer who at that point utilizes it to get into your record and exchange your advantages.

Well I don't think a cloud storage that have authority to disable an account which in other words have access to your private file will guarantee you security or privacy. Just imagine having a password, you want it to be secure but giving it away to stranger that's offering password saving services and you dont know thing about what he'll do to your password because he can do anything anyway.

Maybe you can transfer your important assets to the same wallet and make sure your device is secure when you get the wallet's private key. You can manually copy the private key and mnemonic. You can try reading N times a day. One day, these ABC... will be recorded in your mind. This is the safest way to store.

Have a flash drive for the sole purpose of storing your crypto data and other important things, be sure to keep it in  safe place that only you know. I also create a note file in my laptop for me to easily access the data I need whenever I have transactions to do. You could also write or print your data on paper and store it safely.

I think you have the most effective option for securing your information in three to four places, even if we lose one option, we have the option of reaching it. So, we should store our data in Google Drive, USB flash drive, etc. and if possible, make a soft copy too.

You can always backup your wallet securely to cold wallet, don't share your informations and avoid storing your passwords in desktop where you randomly download files, your system might be vulnerable. Always be extra careful when dealing with dex site where you input your private keys opt to use metamask instead

The most important thing is to save "wallet.dat" file in a very secured (physically) place, I see that some users here have suggested to store in USB, but I would say in USBs, in multiple places because the USBs can be corrupted or lose the files that are stored there for unknown reason, also when the USB is not plugged in for a long time it can lost the information stored inside.
The passwords usually we remember them and try to memorize by heart, but also using the tools like LastPass applications which encrypt our passwords.

It seems to me that today I will be 100% safe. If someone is interested in your data, information or keys, it will do everything to get them. But in any case, our security depends on us.

This is very important, well the way I keep my info is quite unique I must say, because I keep my keys on an encrypted doc file and store on my drive, Google drive to be precise, so even if I loose me phone, I can still get access to all my files from cloud, and also user cannot get access to my files cus they are all encrypted. And I do have a working note I hand write most of my pk and 2fa codes on.

I keep this information on my computer or on the paper at home and the second way is the safest because nobody will hack you and stole your money throughout the computer. I trust to paper and it is the lowest type in risk. But to put info on computer is easier and comfortable thanks to the technology.

I recommend that you purchase a hardware wallet to store your cryptocurrency assets, or use a paper copy to record your password.

the point is that you must still make security on your PC especially for the health of various viruses, such as malicious, phishing and the like related to it. make a duplicate of your private key, and keep it in the safest place other than on your laptop. like a flasdist or something

I recommend to duplicate twice in written form (for myself and a close person for an accident) and in electronic form (on 2 different media)

I store my funds on a hardware wallet and the sensitive information on a separate device which I use only
for storing of crypto data to make sure it cannot be compromised.

I bought myself Ledger Nano S. just see how many people suffer from hacking their wallets, why take such a risk. It is better to give some money but sleep well

I secure my computer with an antivirus software and use a hardware wallet. For passwords, seeds and private keys, I write it down on a paper and keep in a secure place. I don’t really trust keeping these information in the computer.

Why not store it on a cloud server wherein, you are the only one who has the access over it? and if you lost your laptop, still there's a chance that you can recover your accounts again.

I save everything in 1 folder. all the data that I have is like an exchange site, wallet, and others. and I save it in the cloud. if something happens with my laptop, everything will be fine.

make the safest Google account, you have to do a complete verification, especially the mobile number
after that, save all usernames, passwords and also anything you consider important, including the private key into a notepad
then you enter the file.txt from Notepad into the .rar archive and protect it with a password
upload on your google account or maybe on icloud if you have one

If you don't have a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor.
1. Encrypt the file that has your priv keys.
2. Store it in an encrypted USB like Sandisk. Use a different password.
3. Create a USB copy and store the other one in a safe location. Only 1 USB is used for daily access.

You should buy a flash drive dedicated only for storing sensitive information like your private keys and passwords. You need to back up your files in your laptop or smartphone every day as a precaution in case something unexpected happens.

everything like passwords, private keys, and keystore I store in a folder on my PC (the only one using pc is me), so I'm not worried that it will be opened by someone else. and so far it is safe and nothing happens.

Well, I advise not to put your very crypto information in your laptop, maybe reserve one flashdrive to it, whenever anyone might access your laptop, still you have securely put all your accounts in a flash drive that you are the only one should access.

Your Keys, Your Coin; Not your keys, not your coins.

In fact, today (Jan 3 2019), there's an exercise going on called the "Proof-of-Key day" exercise. Where for 1 day, every participant withdraws all their Bitcoins from every trading/custodial account into address(es) they personally hold.

You can read more about this on this well-written post on Medium (https://medium.com/@eljuangalt/proof-of-keys-intentional-crypto-bank-run-4-step-survival-guide-4422b7c0e0d8)

As with my private key and password, I store it in a document on my laptop. And to store this important data in documents that are not connected to the internet network. And until now I have never lost my tokens.

Same here.  Ive also done that but aside from laptop i also save another copy on my usb stick ( flashdrive ) and on my mobile phone as well . this is for extra security so that whatever happens to other devices , i wont worrry that much because i can still access my wallet  .

it does not necesarily to turn off your internet because hackers cannot access our files pretty easy because of built in firewalls and anti malware installed on our devices  .
