Title: Alternative to Myetherwallet
Post by: adekogbe on April 26, 2018, 11:40:18 AM
I normally use myetherwallet for storing my Ethereum based tokens. I am from a country where the economy is really bad and cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology has being a life saver, but the recent hack of mew DNS servers. I fear losing it.
Please what are the best alternatives to securing tokens while storing them.
I want advice on the best alternatives to Myetherwallet

I'm not sure if this is the best alternative, but I've personally always used the MetaMask plugin to manage my tokens.
It's a browser plugin that's available for both Chrome and Firefox.

That said, I never keep large amounts in my MetaMask wallet and I've also set a very strong password.

Maybe you need something more secure? I've found an article which lists your best alternatives.

The simplest methods are listed on the MyEtherWallet home page.
1. Install the plugin for Google Chrome, which is called EtherAddressLookup, it will warn you if you go to the site on a phishing link.
2. Keep your private key in a safe place, preferably on a separate medium. You can add it to the archive with a password, or split it into two parts to make it completely safe.
3. Go to the wallet using the Keystore / JSON File (the File which is downloaded when you register the wallet). To steal the Private Key is much easier than the Keystore / JSON File.
4. To see all the tokens that are on the wallet, it is not necessary to go into the wallet itself every time, use the ethplorer website.io or etherscan.io, it is convenient to do it directly in the plugin EtherAddressLookup.
5. Install the HTTPS Everywhere extension, which forces the site to switch from http to https.
6. You can also install Metamask and Cryptonite by MetaCert plugins.

I think mycrypto is an alternative for myetherwallet, it is developed by the same people that were behind myetherwallet, so they know all the technicalities for an erc wallet.

I have heard of this mycrypto though I have not used it before so I don't really know.
On the other hand Metamask I have used before, but I think it still has to be connected to myetherwallet, correct me if I am wrong.

Also is it all safe now to use myetherwallet?

Another option for safe use is to install the MEW offline application on your computer. You can download it from the official GitHub.

People like to use MyEtherWallet because the wallet loads Ethereum's Blockchain much faster than having a regular desktop wallet installed. I've been reading around and I noticed that people also like to use Metamask as an Ethereum/MyEtherWallet alternative.

Yes that is very true but I believe it is better to be safe than to be sorry, so I will rather not take chances.
I will like to know more about how to run myetherwallet offline and I think that will be safe alternative to not fall for phsing scam.
What about hardware wallets?
Can you share any knowledge about it

Today there are many different wallets that support the erc-20 protocol tokens, but it's best to use the official wallets that the Ethereum Foundation recommends, so today it's just one local wallet, maybe in the near future everything will be much better, but for the time being it's a fact and it can not escape from it.

If you are a mobile device user, kindly get imToken wallet installed on your device and import your wallet via your private key or other provided options there, you would surely enjoy using imToken wallet for it is as simple as water and you can have access to it anytime.

If you are holding a solid amount of crypto, then you should seriously consider purchasing the hardware wallet (such as Trezor or Ledger) as it prevents you from loosing your funds in this kind of situations as the latest DNS hack (even if you are using MEW to access your tokens, as you have to confirm your transaction on the device as well).

You dont need an alternative to Myetherwallet but an extra security - Metamask. You can add metamask as a google extension then secure your wallet there. You dont need to repeatedly input your private key, which is not recommended, as you can already access your wallet in the metamask while it has been secured.

To someone that is not trusting MEW anymore, you have to buy your own hardware wallet if your goal is store them. This is only for those who can avail the said wallet, the price might be quite high for some who are living in  such places but security has it's own price and you can sleep very well without thinking if your life savings will be safe or not. And the hardware wallet that I have tried is Ledger Nano S and it really works perfectly for someone like me who wants to have a calm state of mind about the safety of his coins.

Regarding the DNS hack on MEW. Are the tokens stolen insured in some way meaning the victims of the attack will be reimbursed for their lost coins?

just buy a trezor the hackers cant get into your wallet without permission if you use trezor you dont need to be worried about your coins get stolen. if you dont want to buy a trezor just check eternalgloom reply on this thread the 2nd one.

The best alternative for securing tokens while holding long-term is Ledger hardware wallet. I am using Nano S and can say only the best for it.

Using metamask is more safer than MEW. But it may cause some leak too same with MEW in the future since your are stored in the web. Hardware wallet like trezor and ledger is the safest wallet to use since your private key is the hardware wallet itself and can't be copy even though you login on a malicious website.

Well, I use Metamask and I can tell you that it is much, MUCH better. Also, it seems safer, because you don't have to enter your private key anywhere, just click a button to log in with Metamask, seems much safer and transactions are much easier.

I guess we need to look on Metamask if you have computer/desktop to use if you have your phone with you you can just simple download the app Trust. If you are not safe with this wallet then you can buy Nano ledger S or Trezor it's the best wallet to keep your erc-20 safe.

I still use myetherwallet but i use it together with metamask, I think using the both together is more secured because you connect to your myetherwallet using the metamask, your transaction are confirmed in the metamask that way you are not giving away your private key.

The best alternative for full security are hardware wallets and trazor, ledger and nano hardware wallets are available in the market. These hardware wallets are fully secured and never compromised because only holder can do any transfer because without pressing a button, nothing can be done.

To avoid using website of myetherwallet you can import your account on imtoken, download it on playstore. Im using these for many times until now there was no problem. You can send and receive on it without touching your MEW site . Hackers attact in mew site will not touch your account in danger

With full security- Metamask, Trazor, Ledger and Nano hardware wallets are best alternative of Myetherwallet. It's only depend upon one button which is only done by holder for any transfer. In simple words it is fully secured, safer, and never compromised type of wallets. If i do ranking, then on
1. Ledger
2. Trazor
3. Metamask
4. Nano

You can try mycrypto, Jaxx and Exodus, they are also secure and safe but I highly recommend that you do not store all your coins in one wallet, this is risky and not recommend trying to run at least 5 different wallet or address which is apart from each other to keep your coins safe.

Jaxx is available as an extension for Chrome and is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. You can also download the Jaxx mobile application and view all the crypto balances with one device.
The interface looks intuitive-simple. The program provides an opportunity to easily and quickly switch between different currencies. The Jaxx wallet has built-in support for Shapeshift. With the help of the built-in exchange it is possible to quickly exchange crypto-currencies.

You can use metamask,it is an extension that you can use to create mew wallets without any hassle, mew is the most commonly use wallet for ethereum and erc20c  tokens which is why theres no doubt mew wallet is the most trusted wallet, but the hack happened causing most of the users to doubt its security which is why i am currently using my metamask wallet.

Well if you are scared to use mew right now it is understandable,as the DNS servers nowdays can be hacked, the most ideal wallet would be metamask wallet as it is an extension which doesnt have any website, the security is undoubtful as the developers are very active, most of the people arent using metamask but for me it is one of the most secured wallets that offers like what mew offers.

As  I read from some sources and from other people's experiences, metamasks might be the best option to choose if you're afraid of what happened to Myetherwallet. It's an easy to install add-ons.

For example EthereumWallet has a number of similarities with MyEtherWallet. In this case, all the same JavaScript is used with data collection on the client side, and the user can quickly create an Ethereum address in the browser. For some time, the wallet was popular among users, but at the moment its development stopped at the beta stage. Despite this, the purse remains fully functional. However, it is better to abstain from operations with large amounts.

The only choice you have is to buy Ledger Nano Wallet to avoid hacking of your wallet. That way it will be hard for our wallet to access because it needs a physical wallet in order for them to make a transaction.
You can also use desktop wallet but you have to download a big file that might eat the space of your hard disk.

As I understand it wont matter if other wallet accessing site will be attacked in the same way, it can happen to any of these sytes.
in the case of MEW hack ,there was a alert about the dns change that it is not secure and only then if user ignores it, he or she was directed to the pishing site.. Be careful and read everything very carefully when accessing your wallet.

For storing ETH and erc20 tokens you can use Metamask, nano ledger, paperwallet, Eidoo wallet, Exodus etc. MEW is always under some kind of attack which have made people lose trust in it. I have seen many people shifting to other types of wallets. The best is to go for offline storage as apps and software wallet are connected to internet and are at risk of getting hacked.

If you have your own PC just like me, I recommend using Metamask on your browsers and EAL. They're great!

The recent attacks have made it all possible not to be that nervous.

Also, always bookmark your sites! Never believe in any emails saying they need ur private key to transfer you tokens of such.

Or maybe invest in a cold wallet. And wait for forks! You'lll love it ! haha

alternative of myetherwallet is mycrypto , which is also made my same team (MEW members in mycrypto team) .
but both of site are almost same , so if you dont find i reliable then use metamask , but in metamask you cant transfer tokens , it only allow you to transfer ethereum or sign message .

so for ERC20 tokens you can do 1 thing - use Mycrypto/MEW along with metamask , i means everytime login mew with metamask , and dont copy paste pvt key again and again .

If on my mobile phone use Imtoken and Eidoo.
and for transactions via PC, I use forkdelta or etherdelta, log in using metamask.

IMtoken , Eidoo are also good option , but i did not use much these bcoz of lack of trust .
and forkdelta needed to be open with contract address of that token to send that token .

I agree Myetherwallet is a very good development and has really assisted many users in claiming ICOs tokens, but it's just that most times user accounts are being  hacked, but better security can achieved through MetaMask plugin though, it's not guaranteed.  But there are also good alternatives to Myetherwallet like Metal Vaults (it's an online ERC20 enabled wallet like Myetherwallet but requires login). There are also good hardware wallets that is ERC20 enabled too.

I can feel your situation.I am also a mew user and I don't like metamusk or anything else.but if you think you really want it to go for metamusk. And you can also use extension like cryptonite.Which always warn you if there is anything bad.But what I normally do is I don't normally open MEW wallet i checked it from etherscan if I needed. And if i really need to open it I always use pc never use mobile.the best thing is if you could buy a hardware wallet. And never put all your portfolio in single space. That's it thank you :)

In other to improve the security of MyEtherWallet, the google extension of the Wallet called Metamask was introduced. Extra caution and effort  is required to ensure the security of the Wallet. For example a complex password is recommended for better security. Imtoken is another wallet that is ERC20. compatible. In all wallet system,  there is a security issue. The effort to secure it is important. The more a wallet is detached to the internet the more secure.

MetaMask and Crypto
But I want to say from myself that those services that were subject to hacker attacks will now be better protected than those that have not yet suffered.
Thanks to this experience, MEW will be more reliable.

The main thing is to always check which site you visited, do not enter your key if there are suspicions
If you want to see your balance on the account without transferring funds, then just use https://etherscan.io/

Your coins are stored in the Blockchain Sir. The wallet only contains keys which you use to access your coins on the Blockchain. Try using imtoken or MetaMask or get hardware wallets to be safer... MEW is just a way to access your coins on the Blockchain

We do not secure anyone online. The security we take, the safest we have if hackers wish they could take our information. Spend time in vain to find out alternatives.

I prefer using metamask extension, you can easily create wallets using this extension,it is acting as a browser protection as the same time it encrypts your private keys using the mask, you wont need to put your private keys manually when you are using decentralized exchanges which is why it is much safer than any other wallet, you can also import your existing mew wallet to your metamask.

I like a lot Eidoo, it's a smartphone wallet but you can also join ICOs through it and there is an exchange incoming. Other good apps are Cypher Browser or imToken.

+1 for metamask extension,it is the perfect wallet alternative for myetherwallet, metamask can also be used together with mew,or in a hardwallet like ledger nano s or trezor which is why it is recommended to use this extension as it is an added protection to your wallet, can act as phishing blocking extension and at the same time,a wallet for erc20 tokens and ethereum.

Yeah that DNS hack was really unfortunate. You have many options though as to how to make your tokens more secure like using hardware wallet and accessing your MEW thru Metamask. I heard Blue Wallet is also good, you may check that one out too.

Do use hardwallets if you dont find mew wallet as a secure wallet of your tokens and eth, that is the only place to hide or store your coins with fully secured features,it isnt costly as you think i prefer ledger nano s i have been using this hardwallet for years that is why im sure that this is secured asf. Most importantly use metamask extension to protect your private keys from phishing sites.

People described here all possible and various ways to make the storage of coins safer.
But you have to understand that hackers can find ways to steal anything. Keep your investments in different wallets.
In my opinion this is the only way to maximally secure at least a portion of the cryptocurrency.

One online wallet similar to MyEtherWallet is metamask which is quite good also just set a powerful password so that you wont be easily hacked. But still i trust mew other than the others.

Well, I use Metamask and I can tell you that it is much, MUCH better. Also, it seems safer, because you don't have to enter your private key anywhere, just click a button to log in with Metamask, seems much safer and transactions are much easier.

Hardware wallet is the safest option, it costs $100 or so, but it is worth its price, especially if you own a solid amount of coins. Personally I use Trezor, but Ledger nano is also nice.

MyEtherWallet is different from other traditional web wallets. It is an open-source wallet, with no third-party servers, where you can write and access smart contracts. It has an inbuilt BTC to ETH (and vice-versa) swap facility. You can also connect your Trezor or Ledger Nano S to access your funds in MyEther’s browser environment.

Many mistakenly believe that the purses of the Etherium store ether or tokens. In fact, ether and tokens are stored in the locker, and the purse of the Etherium is just a bunch of keys, this application that serves as the main user interface. Alternative Metamask and hardware wallets Ledger and TREZOR.

To be completely safe just buy yourself a hardware wallet such as ledger nano s or trezor than depend on online wallets like myetherwallet. The point is that there are unscrupulous people who spend endless hours a day trying to find vulnerabilities in such online wallets and so you are never really safe from such people. So just get a hardware wallet and you can sleep in peace when the internet is even burning

Metamask is definitely the second best option. It is easy to use and token follow. It even allows you to buy Ethereum by credit card. There are extra features like tracking multiple wallets on the same account. It is very useful to be able to set the GAS limit while buying, buying, transferring, receiving and sending to Ethereum. Although I have security issues from time to time, I think it's easy to use.

Actually, the Eidoo wallet is also very handy, but I have read in a few places and heard that every token does not come in Edioo wallet. For this reason I have never used it. But the number of people who use it increases day by day.

This is what most people dont know about MEW compared to other traditional online wallets which it is open source and thats the goodness of using this wallet. You can able to make transfer into hardware wallets too with ease. There are alternative like metamask but im still using MEW eversince the only thing you should really worry about is on to input safe your keys which you should really be aware on the safest possible steps not for someone to get you seed or key.Once exposed then expect it would really compromise that one.

myetherwallet is particularly vulnerable to hacker attacks if it is not careful to secure private keys and even randomly assigns private keys to other people the possibility of a token owned can be easily stolen by someone. besides myetherwallet I usually use coinomi available in playstore to store my tokens, maybe it could be an alternative means.

Well on the off chance that you are terrified to utilize mew right now it is understandable,as the DNS servers nowdays can be hacked, the most perfect wallet would be metamask wallet as it is an augmentation which doesnt have any website, the security is undoubtful as the designers are extremely active, most of the general population arent utilizing metamask yet for me it is a standout amongst the most anchored wallets that offers like what mew offers.

To secure you myetherwallet use metamask for more securoty purposes, this can be use on brave, firefox browsers. Or when you are using phones (andriod phones)   use imtoken for alternative one, but the very best one options to make your assets more secure is to buy a hardware wallet, this is just an suggestions because hardware wallet is expensive to have one, while the other options are only free to use apps. Myetherwalet is actually also good and safe for storing tokens based on ERC 20,
for sure, don't give the KEY Wallet addres to others,

To be safer Use more than one Wallet addres, one wallet to store tokens, and one for trading.

And For now I use Imtoken to store my ERC 20 Token, because it's easy to use.

In addition to the current MEW, you might consider using hardware wallets for store Token as well as cryptos because of its high security. With hardware wallets like Trezor and Ledge Nano S, you can link to MEW to store crypto safely. You should use a hardware wallet instead of e-wallet.

Metamask has been already mentioned here many times. But the security of Metamask wallet is similar to MEW, since the private key is stored locally on your PC or gadget and can be easily grabbed by malware. If you need safer solution you need a hardware wallet like Ledger.

Yes mew has some sort of attacks but i am quiet sure it is safe now . The main precautions you havs to take while storing Ethereum based tokens is you never publish your private key , json file or phrase anywhere and always keep  paper wallet. Why do you have to doubt with mew, I believe until now it is still the best and very reliable with the security provided. all from your personal just how to save it and open mew, so that your privatekey is not detected by others. your self protection if you really don't want to be taken, like opening what you often use through bookmarks etc., don't open emails that have links and you don't know them.

I make use of imtoken as it is more secure and easy to use unlike mew which is easily and more prone to hacking,  no need of adding contract address and no need to always log in, they have a nice app which is more user friendly and it accept any form of Erc 20 token

All again depends on our own individual how to take action so that it cannot be hacked by someone who is not good. Until now, I still use mew and I can assure you that Mew is still very reliable and really really protects people who want to do bad things.
You don't need to doubt Mew, you're just more careful. a lot of information has been provided for you, now you can implement it.

This is an old thread, who's pumping it back?
this discussion should be locked, before becoming a nest for other spammers.
This is different from other threads yet we do experience such changes after year by year so it isnt really bad to bumped this out and ask for possible alternatives to Myetherwallet.
Answering the Topic, i dont rely much on other applications rather than MEW when it comes on storing Erc-20 tokens plus with the ease on its mobile app.
I have tried out Imtoken app on mobile when i do experience delays on MEW.

But this thread is still worth to I guess, the time changes new suggestions may come for what are the best wallets can be used as an alternative to MEW,for me MEW is still the best wallet and there is no more hack on the servers or whatever and als they upgraded their interface recently so still it can be the best and also one wallet called IM token used to store ERC20 tokens.
I only suggest that the moderator has the authority here.
There are already many who discuss MEW and other wallets here, you can find them in various threads and that is not difficult.

mew isnt the one that is hacked but the users account  are because they dont secure thier accounts carefully . they dont use 2fa's , they dont use other methods to open thier accounts , and most importantly they dont bookmark the original site of mew  .

no need of adding contract address and no need to always log in, they have a nice app which is more user friendly and it accept any form of Erc 20 token

imtoken app ? this was my first time to hear this wallet . isnt new ?  i see that many users are also sugesting it after i scroll to this thread . i guess im also gonna try that app from now on ,  let me see  if this wallet is a better alternative to mew  but i dont experience any problems on mew . mew is just a bit hassel because its a browser based wallet  .

Imtoken almost have same services as Myetherwallet. Because we can save our tokens too in there. But maybe what make it have plus point is we can use our smartphone to us as wallet so we can open it anywhere and anytime.

I've been using myetherwallet for several years, but I've never had a serious problem with losing it, especially if it's connected to metamask, every transaction has permission first, another alternative is the best according to my observation, yes myetherwallet, the others are not right for me, safe or not safe depending on how you use it, sometimes you are easily trusted by phishing links, not careful.

MyEtherwallet is secure wallet and I never hear any News that whole MyEtherwallet paraphrase or keys are hacked. Hacking is generally happen when you have open cloud storage , Connecting your wallet to other websites or you store you paraphase in unsecured place.
I recommend Hard wallet which is more secure than soft wallet and your fund will be secure there

Been using MEW for long years and i havent any issues about getting hacked or lost funds which means its really that secure and that security will really be depending on the user on how they would
really be keeping their Private keys in safe place which is out of other peoples awareness which they could potentially able to access it out thats why whatever wallets you would make use
then it would really be just right for you to be sensible on minding about on not to expose it out. Storing on cloud storages is a suicide considering that hacks and
exploits could really happen.

Hi! I've come across this a couple of time as the best and the most effective means of storing crypto funds. Since it's an hardware which means it can get lost. In such circumstances how can one recover his/her funds?

Here OP is looking for an alternative to MyEtherWallet (MEW) to store his various tokens. I think Trust wallet is the best alternative to MyEtherWallet. Because Trust wallet is a non custodial wallet and no private key is generated from this wallet. The security of this wallet is very high and it is user friendly.

do trust wallet really safe for altcoins ? and can be used for shitcons that i still have in funds?

I am tired of using MEW because of accessibility and issues about the safety , and also my old funds are still cannot be found as they updated the wallet.

just hear this one , is this really safe?
