I only buy other BTCs with my BTC... that's how savvy I am.

are you serious? when you buy BTC, just buy more by the amount you'd be willing to spend in cash. unless you're talking about people who are willing to starve themselves to become rich on BTC one day.

You're right... Im glad more stores are accepting bitcoin and im glad people are spending it. I dont mean to encourage hoarding at all, however i wouldn't spend mine at this stage

It's with any currency, people go through hoarding (savings haha) and spending.

There has to be movement for the coin to have value, otherwise the economy stagnates, no one can do anything with it, less and less people have it or know someone that does... It has to spread to a certain % for it to be valuable. the more people can easily get it, spread it, use it, the more opportunities there are to spend it as it grows, more pressure from millions more people. It will grow, yes but be smart about how you spend it, and the more stores accept it, the less it will be hoarded.

So you are glad that people are spending bitcoins and that more merchants are accepting it, but LYAO @ people spending their bitcoins. Next time turn your brain on before posting.

It's the same with every bitcoin you change against dollars, euros etc.

Imagine: You buy a 1000 facebook shares for 20$ each. Then with the price at 30 you sell. Nice, 10 000$ profit and you buy a nice car (30 000$). But in the year 2025 this facebook share is worth 1000$.  HAHA -> expensive car (assume the car cost the same).

The only way to escape from this: Never sell Bitcoins. Stick with it until you die!

What if the merchant gives a 50% discount for using BTC?

Customer: gets $10 sandwich for $5. Spends $5 and gets more BTC
Merchant: gets $5 worth of bitcoins today, but will be worth $10+ with patience.

WIN-WIN. The advantages of a strong currency in action - encouraging work and production.

I'd buy a subway sandwich for BTC then log on my computer and buy the equivalent back from the exchange.

those saying you shouldn't spend your bitcoins because it will make you rich one day should also be thinking, "hey why not have ONLY bitcoin and convert to fiat for purchases I cant make without bitcoin, and buy everything else with bitcoin"

you aren't going to stop eating, paying rent, going on vacation, going out with friends, living your life just because you want to hoard all the bitcoins you have. you will naturally begin to spend bitcoins as you need to and the bitcoin economy will flourish.

total price is increasing but seems to have changed it's tempo, probably caused by media attention, there is a big lull when confidence was lost in 2011, but slowly returned.

As far as I can tell it's where it is supposed to be for the slope of growth at this time should be stable at 1000.00 by 2014.

Basically this. Ok, it's a little cumbersome for lots of small purchases but any big purchases you have coming up should be paid for with bitcoin. Just exchange the money to bitcoin that you need just before buying. Your total btc holdings remain the same and the economy is moving forward.

You are making an assumption that Bitcoin will increase in value over time AND that these stores will save the BTC.

This is not a certainty and in my view also not probable. I think the capital that's currently being used to inflate the value of Bitcoin will soon start spilling over into the altcoins. Just take a look at Litecoin's recent move as an example.

Heck Max Keiser was even talking up Litecoin yesterday on his show.

It's just currency. If you buy BTC now, and spend it in 2016 you could say you are spending less than the actual costs ;)

I spend bitcoin all the time. It's a currency, to live it needs to be spent. Just keep buying keep spending, keep using it. Remember, the price of goods you buy stays more or less the same, it's just the amount of bitcoin that changes. So while yeah, if it's your investment just buy and hold, for the rest of us, use it, let it live.

i would love to use my bitcoins.. but in my country there are only 5 places to use bitcoin.. so cant really buy much.. and far from home

Nope. If people buy up all the shares of a company or all the gold or whatever, it doesn't make them worthless; it makes them rarer and therefore worth more. Bitcoin, like anything, only gets its value from what people are prepared to pay for it. And people are still buying and selling Bitcoin. Sure, there's more and more hoarders everyday, but Bitcoins are constantly coming into circulation via mining and those miners need to eat and pay their electric bills. Scarcity only pushes the value of something up and there will always be  people who decide to capitalise on this and sell their coins.

BTC is a currency after all, you are free to buy, sell, trade or save. Completely up to you.

Two perfect solutions to the problem OP seems to think exists.  Go the first route if you hold faith that the exchange rate will go higher, or at least stay the same.  Take the second option if you want to play it safe.  In either case - YOU CAN ALWAYS BUY MORE!  See my sig below... it's not rocket science.  If you want to support the economy (and help it grow, along with any holdings you may have), just buy coin and spend it!

I've done this several times (route 1 above) and each time wound up getting the equivalent if a 10-20% discount.  Of course that was before the current price rise!

nothing wrong with buying a sandwich with btc. When you go to buy your btc just buy some extra above what you would normally get just for buying sandwiches.

Using bitcoin now helps everyone in terms of growth if bitcoins.  Besides, if the people who bought those subway sandwiches are miners, does it matter how much the spend?  Not really.  If they bought bitcoins early on, do you think they care also?  Nope, they made a profit still.  I'd like to spend some bitcoins locally. I don't have much but with the price rise, it would be a treat.

It's true, Bitcoin has to be spent to help Bitcoin grow.  For me though, I'm interested in enriching myself and my family, so spending them on something as silly as a Subway sandwich is completely out of the question.  "Spend Bitcoin, then go rebuy the equivlant back in Bitcoin"??  ???  Rediculous on so many levels.  Convience is one and the extra 1%, plus my time which has value, and this thinking makes no sense to me.

This is the downside of a deflationary currency and in time we will see if it makes or breaks Bitcoin as a transactional currency.  

So how would you buy a Subway sandwich OP (or supporters)?

If your answer is fiat then may I ask: why are you holding fiat?

• Buy something with BTC
• Open coinbase and buy the same amount of coins back

The purpose of a currency is to purchase things, not to increase the value of OP's speculative interest in bitcoin via hoarding.  OP realizes that once people stop hoarding bitcoin, the value of each unit may decrease.  His post is self-interested, not bitcoin-interested.

And pay an additional 1% on all my purchases?   ???  For what purpose?  I'd rather use a CC and let the business eat the costs or just use cash and keep the 1% for myself.

The story of a huge number of early Bitcoin users. Most of the people I know who are big into bitcoin are those that got into it early through its merits of being able to buy drugs off SR. OFC they all massively regret paying what is now $10000 or even $100,000 for a few grams of some chemical purchased off the road but bitcoin wouldn't be where it was today if it wasn't for these transactions. If everyone bought and held it wouldn't be a currency.

Buy extra in Bitcoin for these kinds of purchases, rather than spending local currency. Then, if you decide against the sandwich, you'll end up with a little more value down the road. On the other hand, if you buy the sandwich, you help BTC along and help an entrepreneur as well. Win-win.

Or you can keep it all and once BTC collapses in on itself from hoarding, you can sweep the Subway owner's front stoop for a sammich.

Seriously though, if you are this sure about bitcoins value increasing 10000% in the next year or so, you better not be holding dollars still.

Not everybody sees bitcoin as an investment. I probably wouldn't use BTC for day-to-day transactions that I could do in my own currency yet, but there are a lot of early bitcoin owners who aren't just sitting on their investments - if I had 10+ BTC purchased before the price was <£10, I'd definitely take that as an opportunity to get a "free", tasty lunch every day rather than taking it out of my paycheck!

Right.  The logical thing is to put as much of his liquid assests in btc as possible, without actually creating a cash flow crunch for himself.  There may be times when he's low on fiat and needs to convert some bitcoin to fiat, and other times when he has some extra dollars to buy btc with.
I have enough confidence in bitcoin that I am following the strategy I just outlined.  I have even sold stocks to raise cash to put into bitcoin.

In May I bought 0.5BTC for about 40EUR and put it on my smartphone. I spent 0.3 of that on beer & food & coffee. Then I didn't have much opportunity to spend BTC. Now a Subway started accepting BTC in my city. The 0.2BTC I still have there now has a value of 120E. I bought some sandwiches for me & my friends last week. This week the value of the valet is still greater than last week. I figure this 0.2BTC will keep buying me subway sandwiches forever. I don't feel bad about this.  ???

Buy bitcoins low, buy sandwiches high.

In fact the idea of "investing" in bitcoin is sorta new. It's utility as a payment network is far superior to others, that is some of it's value. And people seem to forget that once you have bitcoin you already have money. There is no real need to turn it back into fiat. Why would I want fiat? It's not as sound a money as bitcoin.

I still like to keep some in cold storage just in case...
But spending some profit from trading is always fun.
