Title: Amazon drones, lol

you've got to be kidding me.  amazon must be doing this for publicity.  that piece of crap can't possibly be the actual drone one day.

I love the idea.. if you had a world disaster 30 mins to fly medical eqipment and aid isnt a bad thing? whats that 500 people dont have food 30 mins later 500 drones with 500 burger kings.

as for shooting it down im sure it will have CCTV and tracking on it ect. If you want to stand and shoot it as it speeds past feel free but im not sure how far you would get the guy thats in the controll room will most likely report you before you can get a few blocks.

I think they are just letting the world know they are serious, to encourage regulators and such to catch up, and to gauge public opinion.

I doubt they have anything that works in the real world yet, but also, they want it to all be legalised and accepted by the public before they put in the real hard work and risk of developing it.

I cannot fathom how these will be a success or even logical. How much do they cost to run? Surely they're not cheaper than a conventional courier in the long-run? They carry one package per time and fly down into your garden and drop the package there and leave it. You wat? They'll start crashing into people and people will try to capture them or destroy them; it's just silly. I'd bet money this is just a publicity stunt.

I think they're pretty neat, but I think it's going to take a lot of hardship and missing drones before they become a staple in modern delivery mechanisms.

as touching unproteced fan on my desk and stopping it this way

This is awesome. While I at first thought it would be hugely unefficent and expensive, if they are only talking about a 10 minute airtime, then that wouldn't be any more expensive than just using decent rechargable licad batteries to power the drones. It costs the same amount to ship a package 1 mile from your location as it does to ship it 800 across state lines, So I suppose they could technically be cost efficent.

As far as tampering goes, fire a camera and a gps on them, and impose a huge fine to anyone who tampers with them. Video evidence + GPS = even more profitable than had someone not tampered with them.

Then a person could just hide let's up in a tree behind leaves with a sniper rifle, wait until it passes by and the cameras are not pointing at the tree, then fire.

For GPS protection all the person would have to do is travel 10 miles from where he lives, and even further down for more protection, and shoot at some drones from there.

These things are very vulnerable.

Very vulnerable. I'd try capture them just for the sport. It'd be like hunting.

I look forward to the hunter-killer pirate drones.

Open source drone software + off the shelf model aircraft + some simple sensors = a disposable drone for hunting down Amazon and other drones.

Now I'm imagining drones electromagneting onto flying cars heading their direction to cut down on fuel and crash risk, sort of like ectosymbionts. Flying car owners could set beacons with their docking rates and BTC addresses, or refuse all docks and repulse rogue drones.

This, free advertisement. You have to be creative to come with something new to get media attention, even if it dont work well you may get free advertisement

This never has to work. There is value in just being the company who tried to make flying delivery robots.

Thought so.

Quote
There is a good reason for this. Drones can be very dangerous. In March 2013, a commercial airliner flew within 200 feet of a small drone flying at 1,750 feet over a neighborhood in New York. The collision would have killed hundreds of people.

What was a drone doing flying over NY? Thought they weren’t even legal yet?

Probably a hobbyist drone (toy airplane).

Quote
Drones have mostly been used by the U.S. military to shoot missiles at enemy combatants in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the cost of these unmanned aircraft has dropped precipitously in recent years, making them more accessible to commercial users, such as companies, small businesses and entrepreneurs.
However, the FAA currently limits the use of drones in the U.S. to public entities such as police forces and hobbyists, meaning the devices cannot be used in return for payment. The regulator said recently that it plans to have regulations governing commercial use in place by 2015

Well it'll fall under a lot of crimes most probably, but I doubt it'll stop people from tampering/stealing/capturing/destroying them. But it's a moot point anyway since it doesn't look like they're ever gonna happen.

They're probably just jumping on the free publicity train. I could see them maybe being used for Organ Transplants instead of helicopters or ambulances if they're faster, but I can't see 'em delivering single packages for Amazon and just leaving em in peoples' gardens to get rained on and stolen. I just can't see how this will work successfully at all, but I hope they prove me wrong.

The model on the video doesnt look like able to deliver some bigger package. It could be used by post service to deliver mail letters though.

http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2013/12/04/challenges-await-amazons-drone-deliveries/

"The drones have a range of ten miles and can carry products under five pounds, which covers about 86% of the online retailer’s inventory."
I'd guess they'd find ~86% of orders contain more than one item, too.

It'd be much more reasonable, I think, to have larger, longer-range drones which can move items from primary warehouses to a very large number of "Amazon lockers" which make semi-regular deliveries based on what's ordered (so, if you ordered at 4:30pm, maybe the site will tell you they'll be available for pickup at 6pm a couple blocks down the street).

The tiny toys they're showing are a small-niche service probably much better suited to food delivery. This still doesn't really solve all the issues around apartments, which I guess is what they'd primarily see in a fairly urban area (the only area this could possibly thrive right now). Idunno, though. Maybe they'll figure something out in the five years' wait.

Drones should only be delivering to live people. The ubiquity of smartphones and tablets with GPS (even devices with wifi+GPS) can designate LZs. Just need an app for recipients, with at least these basic functions 1) securely ID as the recipient 2) access GPS data 3) access camera for analyzing short video capture of nearby tree or flag for wind condition 4) give recipient instructions for final approach, including confirming there is no precipitation or overhead lines nearby 5) flash screen in landing light pattern for drone to lock in on 6) confirm drone container not damaged in transit.

Each drone launch site will likely be significantly less than 50 miles from the recipient's home & work sites, and have its own measuring equipment to cross-reference with the recipient's data, and scrub flights in suboptimal conditions.

Am I the only one that notices the drones will provably deliver the package to an address, NOT A PERSON (are they really waiting for a signature or checking someone from inside the house gets the package?), I understand, outside the house? If so anyone can
  • Steal the package
  • Steal the drone while they're delivering (this has obviously already been said by everyone :) )
?
I can't see how this will work. Or have I missed something?

Am I the only one that notices the drones will provably deliver the package to an address, NOT A PERSON (are they really waiting for a signature or checking someone from inside the house gets the package?), I understand, outside the house? If so anyone can
  • Steal the package
  • Steal the drone while they're delivering (this has obviously already been said by everyone :) )
?
I can't see how this will work. Or have I missed something?

No, you haven't missed anything. As a lot of people suspect, they don't seem to be feasible or practical as a delivery method, and this is all most likely just a publicity stunt. There's an article in this thread somewhere about all the free publicity Amazon got from it.

What if there's a shitload of trees in your yard? Do they just bomb your house with the package?

Imagine a fleet of these things loaded with explosives and used by a foreign invader. "General did you order something from Amazon?" BOOM

In the future they should build one the size of a helicopter that can deliver generators and lawnmowers. lol
Military drones already exist and are already being used in battles

and have very deadly impact on the world and in mind of many peoples  ;)

Reality is much more frightening than you can imagine.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/11/air-force-micro-aviary-drones/

Somehow, I see this technology putting snipers outta business. Sight 10 enemy soldiers 3 miles out, and deploy 10 stinking insect drones.

Seems like modern day warfare has evolved so much that it is no longer a matter of how many casualties a technology can take out, but how to destroy or furthermore control an entire civilization via manipulation and/or infiltration.

Only if you live within a half-hour radius of a distribution centre, so I'm guessing this will exclude the majority of people.

Jeff Bezos should stfu and try generating a profit for his company sometime instead of rambling about delivery drones.

And start paying taxes. I'm pretty sure this whole drone thing is just a publicity stunt, and it worked; look at all the free advertising he got out of it.

This, free advertisement. You have to be creative to come with something new to get media attention, even if it dont work well you may get free advertisement

If this was any other company but Amazon, I'd agree.  What bothers me about this is knowing that Jeff Bezos is completely serious about spending a large amount of cash to try to make this happen.  This company gives nearly 0 fucks about advertising.  The only thing they've advertised on TV is the Kindle.  They have little interest or utility in free publicity.

This drone situation is compounded by the fact that drugs are coming over the border via drones, now.  How long till one of these cartels (probably the Sinaloa cartel) dress up a drone with an Amazon banner?  It's not a stretch, they already operate fully-submersible subs.  Besides, the liability that this kind of operation entails is not something Amazon is exactly fond of.  It will take one person getting hit in the face by one of these things to make the whole operation a fucking disaster.

Have you ever seen a map of active flights over airspace in the U.S.?  It looks fucking ridiculous, intitially, you wonder how more of these jets don't smash into each other.  The last thing anyone in the aviation field needs or wants is to be dealing with commercial drones on their radars during take-offs and landings.

Before any of these concerns can really be addressed, there is the matter of the FAA.  They will do everything they can short of invoking a national security clause to stop this pipe-dream from happening. (they may even do that)

Therefore, I reiterate, Jeff Bezos should stfu and look into more productive shipping methods.   They spend billions of dollars in shipping costs every year, driving their investors up the wall.  Why not open up a dedicated shipping and delivery service instead of paying out the ass to use existing third-party methods?  They could even buy-out an existing service to save time and get a head start on acquiring equipment and facilities.

A bit of FUD in #78. Commercial drones will likely have a much lower min safe alt and max ceiling than helicopters, be prohibited in controlled airspace, and various other safety regs will apply. I wouldn't be surprised to see some similarities to FAR Part 103 (ultralights).

I'm sure I read an article somewhere that drugs cartels had already tried or are doing this over the boarder. It's briefly mentioned here: http://newstalk870.am/mexican-drug-cartels-using-drones-to-scout-border-crossings/

Not sure how much drugs those tiny Amazon drones could carry though.

If they can carry a Ipad  they could go and carry almost 1kg of drugs.
Their advantage will be in numbers , good luck stopping a few thousands of those each day.

you've got to be kidding me.  amazon must be doing this for publicity.  that piece of crap can't possibly be the actual drone one day.

Once the drone lands just throw a net on the damn thing and take it home. If Amazon comes looking for their drone just tell them that you had seen it flying in a north northeastern direction about an hour ago.

Do you really believe they will send those things without a gps tracking device on them ?
What I'm more concern about would be that they even might get a camera on board , and film everything on their way.

Not nice having a few hundred camera watching your every step around the city.

Don't know about their speed, maybe try googling it. I don't think these will become a reality at all.
