Title: Pool or solo mining?
Post by: greenmouse on December 12, 2013, 11:26:18 PM
Hi to all,

I´m newbie here, so I spent some time reading posts experienced miners to know more about bitcoin and how to mine effectively. Although I guess I know the answer I´d like to ask if it´s better mining in pool or solo mining. More than simple answer I´m interested in your experience with one or another way of mining and also in what situation is better use which one. I guess that for solo mining I should calculate probability of finding block in a month or so. Am I right?

Thanks and happy mining.
GM

I recommend using a pool. Unless you have lots of Th/s. You definitely get paid more regularly using a pool.

Try a week each. you could hit the jackpot solo mining. You'll be able to have a better idea if you like pool mining earning levels after paying pool fees and electricity bill.

If you're into altcoins there are some possibilities of solo-mining

When I tried digicoin for a little while I found some 5-10 blocks quite fast, due low network speed and fast block time.

Use pool, for solo mining you need many connections and fast internet (to not get the block orphaned)

For a single mining you have to join a pool that's from my understanding

Bitcoin solo mining is pretty much dead, as far as I can tell, and has been for a quite a while now.  As others have pointed out, there's hope in other 'coins that are only just starting, but who can say if they'll go anywhere at all?  I suspect when the Bitcoin bubble bursts, it'll spell the end of most of the cryptocurrencies - so pick the most efficient way you can today!

Definitely go with pool mining.

Unless you have a lot of TH/s, you will never get a block with solo mining.

+1 on pool mining.  I've not had any success yet on solo mining.  With a pool you get guaranteed payouts based on your work "share"

It depends from you hash power rate and cryptocurrency that you want to mining. If you have small hash rate you should use pool otherwise just solo mining. If you want mine cryptocurrency with big difficult just dig in pool.

No one does solo mining for Bitcoins, no matter how many Th/s of hardware you have.?
Solo mining can only be done on a 1 day old released altcoin.

Reading all the stories it sounds real easy to get a quick profit with mining. But I believe these days are long gone.
I bought my first 5Ghash asic in march this year. I got it finally in October and since then I barely got my investment back.
Now I mine 50 Euro cents per day, and that's already minus the electricity costs.
With the prospect of a rising difficulty and many more miners, I wouldn't recommend mining.

But if you just want to contribute to the safety of Bitcoin by adding mining power, I can only welcome that.

BTW, you can probably make more money by trading Bitcoin.

Mining BTC is not profitable, go for LTC, GLC, NEC or NMC in my opinion. I'm mining Lottocoin for fun right now, to see if it will be worth anything in a month or two. I get 25k/hr solomining with a 7950 (1000MHz/900MHz so not even on full capacity, even underclocked it). If I sell the 200k I got in 8hrs to someone today I get like $27. That's around $3.4 per hour which is pretty good.

If you have an ASIC for Bitcoin mining, can you use this also for certain alt coins?

If you are mining Bitcoins or Litecoins, I would strongly recommend you to use pool mining. However, you can try solo mining with some of the newer altcoins.
