Title: Baby you're a rich man too
Post by: Monica80 on December 19, 2013, 06:34:31 AM
We just need to start spending our coins so that merchants see a value. Spreading the coins will stabilize the value or at least make it gain value in a healthier way.

Hording the coins with dreams that tomorrow it will reach $40k does not help.

I want to be able to buy express, vs, Macys, etc. But they wont take it seriously until we start acting more mature about this.

How many rich btc people do we have in this forum?

A lot of people are spending their coins. If you look at the daily transaction volumes, the ratio is much higher than the same for fiat.

The actual problem is that the number of merchants accepting Bitcoin payments are really low.

Everyday I go on gyft.com and buy a $10 gift card for for CVS.

Then I go buy beer... The cashiers ask me why do I always have this weird paper copy gift card.

I tell them about bitcoin... Just doing my part..  ;)

Why don't you import the gyft card to your smart phone?  The Gyft app for iPhone is really slick (and automatic!).

Because I have a crappy metro(ghetto)pcs phone... I will be getting a verizon phone soon though.

If Santa thinks I'm good enough...  ??? But yeah that would be much cooler.

I agree. Totally true but still not super easy to find everyday places where they are accepted. I have used gyft too though.

We need to show these merchants the power of bitcoin!

Find me a supermarket / convenience store that accepts bitcoins and I will pay with bitcoins. Chicken and egg at the moment.

It's pretty hard for merchant to accept bitcoins with this price instability. Its moves are too big!

But I believe it will mature with time, which will enable more merchants to accept.
We still are at the very very beginning of cryptocurrencies. Don't forget that.

Besides, that fact that so many people are hoarding bitcoin shows that it is a very good store of value.
That's another role that our money needs to fulfill.

In all, "way to go bitcoin!" is what I have to say!  :)

I recently bought a 2010 BMW with Bitcoin, and am currently looking for a real estate agency in Seattle or Denver who would deal strictly in Bitcoin, to the point where I can buy a condo outright with Bitcoin and not have any fiat mortgage to deal with. I intend to spend roughly half of what I've got.

I know of a few good merchants lists and btc maps, hold on:

http://coinmap.org/

https://www.spendbitcoins.com/places/

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

I am also a bitcoin merchant and many more are listed on reddit.com/r/bitcoin all the time.  It's always great to see more merchants bring in adoption.

Agreed. its what is holding adoption back. Unfortunately I don't recall anyone planning to put ATMs in the UK yet. Have to wait for regulation which could be ....... years away.

Being able to convert BTC to currency is great, but I was referring to being able to go to a store and pay with bitcoin.

I agree the price fluctuation would literally bankrupt most businesses. They won't be able to swallow a 50% lose in profit from one weekend to the next one. This is hurting BTC.

And another problem is that I would like to be able to buy stuff I really need or use directly! Like empowe mentioned. Go to target and buy stuff. That would be a dream.

This would spread them shinny cute coins around. And people would start using them widely and a value would be set.

And can't we help those in the UK mentioning that coins are super scarce? I am willing to sell one or two haut for helping :) but I have no intentions of becoming a trader.

Kwoody, did you transferred coins or did you exchange them to currency?

Buy BTC:
bittylious already sell bitcoin in UK and in January ZipZap will be available almost everywhere in the UK (They talk about 28k locations).
There is also bit121 which uses a processor connected to Barclays but I haven't use it so I can't tell.
And there is always localbitcoin

Buy with BTC:
Maybe a bear in shoreditch or hackney, what else?
Not much really

I've used localbitcoins.com to buy most of mine. Here's a bunch of people in London who will sell you BTC for GBP:

I can help you out while we wait for Netflix to accept Bitcoin  :)

Now that would be awesome. Perhaps I can get a second job part time that pays only in bitcoin. That way I won't need to exchange from dlls. :)

The car was purchased purely in BTC. I have not tracked those coins since the transaction. Finding a real estate agent in the USA that will take BTC is proving to be a challenge. As for stores and places like target, you can buy Gift Cards for Target using BTC. It's far from perfect, but at least it's possible to facilitate a transaction at a retail store, essentially using BTC as payment.

The premium is too much for me. Why not just use bitstamp or something?

Bitstamp turned into a massive balls up for me. They had their banking 'issues' just as the price went mad and it took nearly a week to deposit.

Localbitcoins et al did have an insane premium when prices were rising fast. When it's falling or level the premium becomes more acceptable. A few times it's been less than the exchanges. You have to keep monitoring it for the right moment.

In retrospect I wish I'd gotten all of my coins through there. I guess it depends on whether you think the price will be steady.

I see. I never had any problems with bistamp. Guess you got unlucky, or I got lucky.

If someone is selling below exchange prices at lbc they won't stay in business very long ;)

Why the negative comments? If he crashed it the first night, sure, people would call him all sorts of things but I don't see anything wrong with buying a lambo. Most boy's dream .......... probably just jealousy.

Neg eh? I'm not really a reader of the media but I'd like to know how this could be a bad thing.

I guess I should have mentioned negative in the forum, but yeah my comment:

was referring to jealousy from other members.

Actually, when the news was out about you buying the lambo, I thought this was a milestone in the btc history. Just like the guy spending 10,000 btc to buy pizza a few years ago. ;)

Monica80 I really like your point that we shall not only sit on these bitcoins but in fact show the willingness to spend them also. I have heard someone brought Lamborghini from his bitcoins. By the way I am not a rich holder of bitcoin as I am waiting for it to either stabilize or doom forever. Like I don’t need to risk my hard earned money whose value might be overvalued hence a massive tumbling could be on its way.

And Bittylicious. It's the most simple exchange IMO. I don't understand how people find it so difficult to get coins, unless you're technically illiterate. Are people that lazy they just actually want somebody to send them coins whilst they do nothing?

Hording the coins with dreams that tomorrow it will reach $40k does not help.

This is a really naive outlook. People are spending their coins. People don't have to buy a load of crap they don't want just because they believe in the Bitcoin. What happens if the people you give your coins to then hoard them? Unless 99% of people are hoarders, then it's not a problem. I'll hold my coins and spend them when there's something I really want. I''m not going to fritter them all away on crap just because I want to promote Bitcoin. I can do that other ways.

Seriously have you looked at gyft?  Gyft will let you instantly turn your BTC into a target gift card which you can spend like cash at the store.  It works beautifully.  You can spend your bitcoins at hundreds of stores this way.  The stores don't lose because Gyft does the BTC to cash conversion so the stores get paid in cash and they don't take the BTC risk.  You get a giftcard at the current BitPay exchange rate which is usually better than if you tried to exchange for fiat, and it is instantly available on your smartphone (or you can print it out) to spend in the store.

Don't blow all your 'coins on crap, indeed, but since you've surely got daily purchases to make either way, do as the Bitcoin Jesus recommends and ask the magic question everywhere you go (http://doyoutakebitcoin.net/).  :)

Setup more payment processors that accept coins besides Bitcoin and make it so easy a 12 year old can do it, coinpayments is a good start but I'd like to see more stand alone software come out that are more digital currency friendly oh and definitely seeing some more altcoin support would be good too.

Yes I did. This isn't a foolproof plan on getting places to accept bitcoins. Their next response will probably be "no, we still don't accept Bitcoins".

I think it'll be easier just buying with fiat. I'd still rather just hold my coins and see what they're worth in the future. Probably a lot more than what they are now.

Probably, but it's worth to try.
Besides this way there will be more people that has heard of bitcoin, and sooner or later they may get interested in buying or accepting bitcoin in their bussiness.

I myself didn't get into bitcoin till I heard of it at least a dozen times!

Besides this way there will be more people that has heard of bitcoin, and sooner or later they may get interested in buying or accepting bitcoin in their bussiness.

I myself didn't get into bitcoin till I heard of it at least a dozen times!

It's a good way of getting Bitcoin's name out there and to help promote it, but I'm not going to look like an idiot and keep asking if a shop accepts Bitcoin when they've already told me several times that they don't. If you want to; then great, but I'd find it annoying personally. I always tell people bout Bitcoin, but I'm not going to keep driving it into them like an aggressive salesman.

Of course, I agree. I would ask just once, the thing is to hear of it from different people.

I have done 2 things this week to help advocate bitcoin.

1) My local gun dealer is going to let me build a webstore for him to accept btc as a payment method for popular guns and ammo

2) I went to a verizon store to hear the customer reps feed me full of BS when I wanted to just get my phone service transffered over and price a wifi hotspot he asked what I did I told him, just so happens the owner of the verizon store was in the back and over heard the conversation. In Jan he is also calling me about setting up bitcoin as a payment method for his store. As well as investing into mining hardware and BTC himself.

So the 2 things i've done so far is became a bitcoin arms dealer. :P and may be in the works of setting up a privately owned verizon store to accept bitcoins as a payment method. This is all within 10 miles of each other in northwest ohio.

or ditch the Apple control freaks and get a nice thinkpad here.  Install ubuntu on it and be free.

Well, that was kind of my original point. I want to be able to buy stuff I like but can't find stores accepting BTC and selling those things.

I have saved a little but willing to spend some like today if I could find a store.

I want to buy a MacBook Pro with with BTC. That is my goal.

Well, I kind of like Apple :P ;)  :-*

So don't be mad at me. Why? well, I like a clean setup and I am getting into photography so I think they have the best resolution and color gamut.

I think it super cool to ear you are motivating real physical stores to accept bitcoin. And awesome that you are setting up your own business with verizona, that means we get a deal? or inside pricing? haha jk
