As suggest by the forum and in general, peer to peer trade via non-exchange market, you should always do escrow.

It's sad that people will scam with charities and donations, these people are scum of the earth and hope they go to hell asap.

I am very very depressed. This guy scammed me 3.35 BTC. He said he was going to send the nextcoins to me according to our deal, which never happened. I don't know what to do right now. 99.9% of people who claim they're going to donate money to charity on here are scammers. The other 0.01 may have good intentions but are still foolishly naive. Never donate to people who are claiming they're going to donate to charity: it's the oldest trick in the scambook.


Why would you send 2BTC then then a further 1.35 Bitcoins to someone without escrow and without receiving the first lot of coins? You have my sympathy if you were scammed, but please stop begging for donations everywhere.

People always want to believe in the good, hard to blame them for that.. He PM'd us too, here's how we went about it..

This would be much easier if you were a well respected Hero Member with high trust ratings, but that, at least for now, doesn't seem to be the case. We suggest taking a similar approach before donating. Also, we feel something needs to be done to bring about a standard process through which charities could be legitimised and vouched for by trusted members. It would go a long way for the community if we could redirect the coin towards real causes that otherwise might've gone to scammers (and the most despicable ones at that).

I think the time has come for BitcoinTalk to have a Charities section with one subsection entitled Charity Announcements, of which no bitcoin wallet address is submitted and is used solely as a vetting process. Not until the NPO passes muster by its peers, read us, fellow bitcoiners, does it get moved to the Charities section only by a mod/admin, upon only then a bitcoin wallet address can be added to the thread. This act should clean up the rest of this forum at least in this regard.

We can start by adding the following venerable causes to the hopefully new section:

Sean's Outpost
My mega thread that feeds people
Dab's two main causes, based in the Philippines

What I propose is for ongoing and future BitcoinTalk discussions pertaining to garnering donations via bitcoin, albeit a dedicated thread discussing Oxford Homeless Pathways is not outta the question. If OHP already accepts bitcoins on their website, then I envision it on the Charities section, otherwise it would be in the vetting section. Hope that makes sense.

Charities section would certainly add legitimacy to the idea that charities (especially newer ones) need to go through some sort of a process in order to be considered "legit". The problem the way we see it is that it's still unclear what process charities would have to go through to not discourage them on one hand, while making it near impossible for scammers to pass on the other. Before we go about opening new threads, let alone forum sections it might be a good idea to figure out a way to do it in a way that would solve the problem in a real way and not just promote some of the existing charities.

I wouldn’t donate money to any charity on here at all. But if you must, as above check they had an official Charity Number, or whether they are doing an official charity collection in Bitcoin where the address can be verified.

Ugh, why does anyone donate to a charity on a forum there have been so so many scams in the past i think people should be aware by now ?

If you wanna give charity, do it directly. Visit a local charity, or go to their website, or just visit someone you know who is really poor and help them.

Middle Men are never needed for charities, never ever. They are almost always (99%) scammers, even if they turn out legit they will still bag a heft percentage for profit.

What do you need from them? Surely you'll have enough evidence already?

If you hand the info over to the police and there's enough to make a case the police will be able to get a warrant to get his IPs. Maybe this guy used TOR or a proxy though.

Confirm that IP addresses that links the different accounts. He is also banned on different poker sites, admins wanted to know if the accounts are linked.

Unfortunately, the admins here don't give a shit.

I think someone pulled up his actual info, didn't they? This should be an easy (easier) case for the victim(s) if that's the case. Who's handling this? Guess I can do some background work and find his victims... I'm willing to put in some spare time; just to set an example out of this fucker.

Let me know if you, victim, are interested. Sometimes navigating through the legal system can be daunting but it's a good thing I know all types of professionals in the the legal arena.
