Title: Fully Secure chat
Post by: nahtnam on December 29, 2013, 08:14:18 AM
Is there any chat service that is 100% secure, and encrypted chat that no government can track? I have nothing really to hide, but I like the fact that there is something out there that the government cant control. :D

I would've thought any public chat wouldn't be 100% secure, unless you were encrypting every message.

I haven't tried it, but there's TORchat: http://lifehacker.com/5919523/torchat-is-an-easy-to-use-anonymous-and-encrypted-chat-client

Basicly anything that uses "off the record communication" aka OTR.
Paper about it here: https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/otr-wpes.pdf

Pidgin uses OTR via Jabber (aka XMPP) http://www.pidgin.im/
OTR plugin here: www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/
You should mask your ip with tor / proxy / etc though, so you might as well us this torchat, i have no idea what underlying protocolls it is using though.

Well according to https://github.com/prof7bit/TorChat its a pidgin plugin... but

Nope no OTR. https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-talk/2010-December/004636.html

Well if it suits your needs, I hope these links help you to find out more about it and to make your choice.

If you want to use jabber, these servers run within tor:

  • jabber.ccc.de        >>    okj7xc6j2szr2y75.onion
  • https://riseup.net    >>    ztmc4p37hvues222.onion

Be carefull with your password though, because they are usually stored in plaintext

Thanks for the reply. Was just wondering. Im not going to use this too much. I just watched a ted talk about NSA and how they track people and if a company doesnt comply, they hack them.

Thanks. Fun to watch, a little on the light side though, but I guess you cant expect more in 20 minutes :)

Dilma Roussef is great.

explanations, apologies and guarantees that such procedures will never be repeated.
Friendly governments and societies that seek to build a true strategic partnership, as in our
case, cannot allow recurring illegal actions to take place as if they were normal. They are
ur/acceptable.
Brazil, Mr. President, will redouble its efforts to adopt legislation, technologies and mechanisms
to protect us from the illegal interception of communications and data.
My Government will do everything within its reach to defend the human rights of all Brazilians
and to protect the fruits borne from the ingenuity of our workers and our companies.

Interesting Topics and I wish the Canadian gov't were as diligent in it's efforts on our behalf. Though I wish they hadn't brought in the AML and KYC. Getting registered on CAVIRTEX is a pain.

He has actually made a few more ted talks. If you look on his personal site, you can find them.

Hi, first post here. I'm glad to see there are some interesting topics at hand! I've been wondering about this kind of thing for a while (and with recent "for your own good" activities making news as of late, who isn't?) But I haven't have a chance to look up (or cook up) anything yet. So thanks for the links - Cryptocat in particular looks like a good solution for times you don't need something more involved (OTPs) or for corresponding with people who are less tech-savvy.   :D

Well I wouldn't go that far, but it's an interesting video, but nothing I didn’t already know, but it's a good video to show to people who don't.

There arent many presentations I get interested into. I only have been really interested in 3 talks. This, "How I held my breath for 17 minutes", and a talk about black holes in a observatory.

I've seen a few great talks on there. Seen a few shit ones though as well. My favourite rapper Akala has done a couple. Not sure whether you'd be interested but I recommend them regardless.

Bittorrent Chat (http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/bittorrent-chat.html) seems promising.
Its decentralized, so there is no central server where all your conversations stay for anyone to grab.
Its still under development though, so we'll see..

Interesting. This a good software because it does not reach any main server. It only reaches the person you want to talk to.

I am working on a secure communication platform where you connect directly to your intended recipient. Oddly, it was my garage door that inspired me.

It will have many fail-safe features and I will try to make some sort of interception detection. I intend for it to be used over Tor or Freenet, but could even work on the regular internet, and I intend for it to be secure enough to even be able to transmit your messages in plain speaking, over the radio, etc.

Because transmitting encrypted messages over Ham Radio is not allowed by the FCC I will have to think on some legal work arounds.

About 5 years ago I was using SILC but the devs seem to have abandoned the project—which is a shame. It resembled IRC too much for my liking but I'm sure it would have been a success if only they could have made it decentralised.

netcat+SSH+Tor is the quick & dirty option.

Dont use cryptocat, its broken. Broken as in they made a billion mistakes, trying to implement otr properly.

Is there any chat service that is 100% secure, and encrypted chat that no government can track? I have nothing really to hide, but I like the fact that there is something out there that the government cant control. :D
Skype one to one chat (both voice and text) used to be encrypted from end to end, but I am not sure about the current situation after they bought by Microsoft.

Pretty sure NSA has backdoors into it as well.

Yeah. In the video he mentions that if a company refuses to give access then they literally hack the site.

Not sure why they need GeoIP libaries, but that sounds fishy to me. No reason to know my country if you want to provide secure p2p mail / chat.

Also from a quick review of the code it seems that the autor didnt disable vulnerable hardware features.

Wouldnt use that until someone who knows more about crypto checked it completly
