Best watch out for some scammers sending some false info. I know more than one person would like to say they "ordered" something.

This seems like a double edged sword.

1) OP's account was stolen.
2) OP is telling the truth, but doesn't care if other users post false info.
2.1) Unless, OP has information and wants verification.
2.1.1) OP's original owner can verify transactions.
2.1.1.1) If so, why doesn't OP's original owner just say "I'm in the hospital?"

If the packages were ready for shipment, shouldn't them already have shipping labels on them on where they are going?

it'd be a shame if this is a scam. We did a few hundred USDs worth of transactions and he paid up front every time....

I sent him an amazon gift card for a touchpad.  Do you think you got my giftcard and he has your bitcoin and I am out a touchpad?

I have waited for several days for some kind of response.  The other day we get a response from someone using the account saying he was in hospital.  Reviewing all follow up messages posted see someone has bought gift codes from seller.  I paid for my item using an Amazon gift card.  I checked the status of the gift card and someone redeemed the card and I have no product.  I have contacted amazon since I have no product or gift card and told them my code is stolen and now they are looking to see who used it.  Might be some trouble coming this way for this seller and/or whomever purchased the gift card that was stolen.

I'm sure i used some of the codes if some of you bought the touchpads w/ amazon GC. I traded about 20ish BTCs for $250 worth of GCs. This place is getting crazy....

My deal was never to get anyone else involved but to get my money back.  That is the reason I paid with something that I can request back unlike a bitcoin.  I got nothing in return for my money.  Someone sold you something stolen and you bought it unknowingly from a scammer as well.  Your deal just happened to work out.

He's either moved on to another forum to scam more idiots willing to part with their money or is using a dupe account to do it all over again here. Considering the amount of gullible fools in this forum, I'd say the latter.

My scam prevention scheme:
me - "I will not send first!"
seller - "ok, how about half on sending the package?"
me -"I will not send a single bitcoin first, but I will accept sending to trusted escrow"
seller - "great, I trust (insert seller alter-ego here)!"
me - "How about (insert list of people with more than a year on the forum, and still active)"

Three things may happen here, in order of probability, top is higher:
- Silence... soon after I see people crying scam on this seller's threads
- "I know none of those people!", followed by what's described above
- "Ok, I'll just send first, I guess I can trust you, please don't scam me"

I have this down to a science :)

I find this funny because I was negotiating buying the laptop from him and the first message he sent me was...
Quote
Look, I really don't mean to be rude, but I've just started here, and I'm being called a scammer for something I haven't even done.

I understand skepticism is one thing, but blatantly calling me a scammer for shit that hasn't happened is another.

And I realize it's not you calling me a scammer, I'm just explaining to you why I might have come off as a little....rude.

I'm sorry that this has inconvenienced you,
Have a good day!

lol he did seem somewhat legit however he pushed hard to sell me the laptop. Later on he sent me this message:
Quote
1Na6X3gU1evMqUwYZZjk8ZxYu4tvA1Mv8G is the addy btw.

You can get in touch with me on AIM at "Ryouge" without the quotes.

I will be on all day, and I idle, so just drop a message if you need to get in touch with me.

I believe the UPS store closes around 5, but I'll need at least 2 hours to package and drive to the UPS store.

UPS ground shipping is around $20 on it.

I would include this, but the price is already so low that I feel it should be the buyers responsibility to pay this.

I'm in such a bind that I'm already losing 500+ on this lappy, however, I guess it is I that got myself in the predicament, so if the shipping charges are what's the deciding factor of your purchase, let me know and I can probably pay them....

Goodnight!

^^ thats his aim if anyone wants to try to get in touch with him. This is when I started to doubt him because he said he was in a bind and needed money and was loosing 500$ off the laptop and then he sent:

Quote
Well, it is an or best offer situation.

The pawn shop only offered me $300 for it, so I might be pushing my luck asking for $400.

$350? Cheesy

and this:

Quote
Actually, I just updated the topic. I'm asking $330 firm.

Let me know if this changes your mind, if not, it's going to the pawn shop tomorrow.

Later I saw he updated the thread to sell the laptop at 300$ at which point his offers stop making sense. I think he did mention he trades on silkroad as well.

Anyone that has read the forum in the past few months? I mean, I remember a year ago, this was a peaceful and trusted land. We didn't need cops or guidelines, we were a small and happy community...

Then bitcoins got valued, attracting interest from every kind of person... EVERY kind of person :)

User X is in the hospital/sick/dying/had his brain amputated/parents died/grandmother died/dog died/gerbil died. Sympathy ploy to cloud your emotions while he runs away. Old.

Anyone that has read the forum in the past few months? I mean, I remember a year ago, this was a peaceful and trusted land. We didn't need cops or guidelines, we were a small and happy community...

Then bitcoins got valued, attracting interest from every kind of person... EVERY kind of person :)
There are scammers on every forum. People just need to use common sense.

As for using escrow with random forum member? I don't know you. I don't know person X. It's a hassle. What if person X is a crook? Time on the forum means little - it's just a name. What seller would do that?

Ways to protect yourself:
1. Trust no one. Use an established escrow service like www.escrow.com. Problem: Not many sellers are willing to go through the hassle or fees. Not a great option.
2. Look at their feedback. If it is only a few, be cautious. If it is eBay, e-mail them through that account to confirm that it is a legit. Someone could create a forum name to match an established eBay account. Also, if it is eBay, check their feedback history to make sure it is not just filled with $0.99 purchases. Even feedback is no insurance. I have been ripped off by someone with years of history and 44 all positive feedback on eBay. Fortunately, I and another buyer recovered our money through PayPal and this virtually never happens. You have to have some measure of trust, but be smart about it. Insurance will help you out.
3. Ask them to ship first. If you have significantly more feedback than them, you have built up more trust than they have. It is a reasonable request.
4. Use Heatware (http://www.heatware.com). It is an established feedback system that you can carry with you anywhere on the internet. Quickly check that the feedback is legit.
5. Pay with AmazonPayments, PayPal or credit cards. All of these have a level of built-in insurance protection. Bitcoins have none.
6. Seniority on forums is meaningless - don't trust people, just because they have been around awhile. Have seen established members use that "trust" and run away with people's money. Even moderators. It takes 60 seconds to register a new account on a forum. Sometimes people get in desperate situations and are willing to rip off others.
7. No trade history and they won't ship first - how much are you willing to lose?

I was burned early on, but have lost no money from fraud in at least a decade of trading by following these guidelines.

Be safe, guys.

i really don't understand the point of this thread. if he's going to scam someone, why make another excuse to say hes in the hospital? he already has everyone's money, the intentions are already there, why make this thread? i really hope scumbags like this do end up with a seizure later on for the karma.

I'm still not 100% convinced that it is a scam.  It sure looks like it at this point, but if it is, he's a really dang good liar based on his posting history.  None of it looks scammish at all.  And as haploid pointed out, why even make a thread like this if he's just going to disappear anyway?

Still holding out hope that I didn't get scammed, but I'll probably have to kiss those coins goodbye.  :(

I thought he's a bad liar...my gut reaction before ANYone said anything about a potential scam was that it was a scam.

Come on, what newb to the forum would come and try to sell $3000 worth of equipment spanning multiple threads in a matter of hours?
Well, guess I didn't do my due diligence research then.  I wasn't looking at what else was for sale.

I was very suspicious seeing 2/3 threads on the front page for 100+ items. After this thread seeing he recently joined the forum made it more suspicious.

not to mention he admitted to being in legal trouble for criminal damage to property and that apparently was a reason he didn't want his handwriting shown in a picture next to the products.  he feared he could get into more legal trouble.  This is weird in an of itself, but I actually suspect he made that whole part up as well as a really lame reason why he couldn't show his handwriting next to the product.

More and more we see he is very untrustworthy. This should be a good example so people don't get scammed. This should just detour people from buying stuff on a whim.

Consider me deterred.  :\

What came of this? Did anyone get scammed by thydude? I just made an offer on the laptop he is selling today but after searching for his name on the forums I'm not going to risk trading with him. Why isn't his account marked as scammer yet?

This forum supports scammers, if you get scammed it is your own fault as I understand it.

If you steal people's Bitcoins the admins don't bother you for months, if at all, regardless of how many people report you, or how much proof you have. However they have plenty of time to ban reputable traders for the unwritten rule of "excessive bumping" for 4 days, without a single warning. I am also fairly uncomfortable with the fact that this forum is now run by Mt. Gox. No wonder we are starting to see tumbleweeds blowing around the forum.

Stef was a scammer, of course I never sent her a touchpad.

Ryuguy was a scammer, we all decided I didn't have to send him a product.

SGTSpike should have received his laptop. It was sent out the day after this original post was made.

Am I forgetting people that I supposedly scammed?

I NEVER received a laptop, NEVER received tracking # or confirmation of shipment.  If you did indeed ship it, by all means, send me a tracking number so we can figure out why I never got it!

Now the question is, what username did ThyDude rejoin the forums under?  If he was bold enough to come back under the same username to try and scam more people, surely he's bold enough to sign up for the forum and try it again under a new username...

Does this forum ever release the IP addresses of known scammers?

from what i understand yes, 2 weeks after the scamming, theymos releases the ip address, but you have to contact him and ask him and also show the evidence of scamming.

What's the use of waiting 2 weeks? Wouldn't it be better to release all known info right away?
