None of them can touch The Good Wife though. First it debuted a full two years before any of the other shows mentioning Bitcoin, but it was also completely dedicated to Bitcoin too.

A few of us decided to do shots of "insert appropriate alcoholic beverage here" every time the show actually said "Bitcoin" (expecting it to be very few). Boy... did that turn out to be an interesting night. My memory isn't as good as it used to be (probably because of that night) but the final count was somewhere above 70.

although i do not like highlighting the silk road history. The TV show 'person of interest' series 3 episode 13 mentions bitcoin  in context of (kinda loosely) the arrest of DPR.

so thats
the goodwife
simpsons
almost human
person of interest.

big named TV shows mentioning bitcoin

Bitcoin just got a shout out on Criminal Minds. Wasn't in the best light...paying for hookers, but any press is good press?

Lol let's be honest here; a hooker that accepts Bitcoins probably isn't your typical corner-trash hooker. That lady is probably a high-end prostitute!

You do realise she's just a TV character? lol But I recommend all sex workers and any other businesses start accepting Bitcoin.

And I would say, that you can make good movies with Bitcoin as (on of the ) topic(s). Because Bitcoin has something mysterious and revolutionary - in the real world.
- Satoshi Nakamoto (alone this)
- Silk Road
- hacking
- copy it and bring up a new coin (that maybe overcome Bitcoin). In a movie you don't have to be accurate. Someone invents a proof of work that can spy on people, cure cancer, search engine, what ever.
- the goverment destroys the money, hyper inflation and Bitcoin come
-...

And like I said: A movie don't has to be a documentary. It can be inaccurate to get more dramatic ;)

PS: What is about that Bitcoin documentary? "The rise of Bitcoin"?

That's kind of what they were talking about.  Apparently, with the internet, prostitution has left the streets and moving more online.  Definitely, a situation where you want cash bitcoin involved.

pfft.... i would never expect those sharks would understand any tech phenomenal. There is a reason why those guys are only millionaires except Mark Cuban (whos clearly too cocky to admit a paradigm shift)

In short, it will be like this.....

"Bitcoin? i heard it was a scam"

"How do i get my money back? I want a loyalty on every.... whatever bitcoin related tx...."

"Your evaluation is way too high. No cash flow only bitcoin flow... that means i will only give you $100k max"

ok seems like these shows are giving it a bad name instead of making a plot a person makes a game and then becomes successful using bitcoin will bring in more oportunist instead of promoting negativity asscociated with it.

maybe you should watch some of the shows.

EG
almost human, set in the future where bitcoin is THE currency everyone uses.
simpsons, taking about it as part of Krusties investment portfolio.

both of these never mentioned drugs, underground uses etc.

it takes time for media to catch up with reality, mostly due to the fact that shows are recorded upto 6 months prior to being broadcast. so anything recorded after summer 2013, (after silk road died) should now start to be talking about bitcoin without mentioning drugs websites.

shows recorded today, (after the US/UK tax announcements) should when aired this autumn, be mentioning laundering money less often.

it takes time, so be patient

I really like the "NSA Parallel Construction" issue that was presented a few episodes ago.

I missed the mention in Blacklist.  Could you elaborate?

There was a mention in Portlandia on IFC.   It was a snarky statement, about inviting over a guest who only talks about bitcoin.

a few years back i was watching some dateline NBC with Chris Hanson,
they were investigating credit card fraudsters , and they were showing
some electronic bulletin board type site , and the show said that
the fraudsters were selling people's credit card details for as little
as $5.

I kept thinking -- yeah but how are these people sending the $5??

Now that I look back on it, it was probably bitcoins and darkweb.

Not a mention of bitcoin directly, but still kinda cool (not condoning criminality)
in an indirect way.

Interesting that there are so many mentions on primetime TV shows and few if any in big budget movies. Just another indication that TV is more relevant than movies these days.

Movies have a far longer production time than TV shows. So TV shows can incorporate news and world events into their story much more rapidly. And since Bitcoin has only been in the media on a larger scale for less than a year, there simply hasn't been enough time for it to sneak into movie-scripts of new releases.

In other news, there was a brief mention of Bitcoin on NCIS. The whole episode centered around bringing down a Silkroad-esque website.

hmmm i dont class this as a PRIME TIME TV show. but just for the hilarity of us talking about prime time TV. then that sketch probably is a great dramatisation of what happens in the writers offices of most prime time shows who have not yet featured bitcoin.

The mention of bitcoin in Portlandia is actually S04E05, not season 2.

See the script here:

http://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=portlandia-2011&episode=s04e05 (http://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=portlandia-2011&episode=s04e05)

Context:

"[Drum roll] Why did you do that? Tom and Stacey are so annoying, tom only talks about Bitcoins and Stacey only wants to tell me about her new line of jeans, bad boy."

I'm pretty sure TBBT will mention it in the next season, if a next season comes. But that will take a while.

Sadly, GoT is not likely to mention it ever. Unless there's a commercial break that mentions bitcoin for some reason.

Interesting that there are so many mentions on primetime TV shows and few if any in big budget movies. Just another indication that TV is more relevant than movies these days.

movies are shot a couple of months before being shown in cinemas i guess. Maybe longer.

It will take a while, but then a lot of movies will mention bitcoin at some point.

movies are shot alot longer then just a couple months.. they take upto 9 months after shooting the movie to have time to add all the CG effects.
need proof.. look into Jennifer Lawrence (xmen: mystique - hunger games: katniss)
after filming xmen, she managed to then go on and film 'serena', then she went onto filming 'hungergames: mockingjay p1', and start filming 'hungergames: mockingjay p2'.. all before the xmen movie got released to cinema's.

but i agree intime there will b mentions of bitcoin in movies. but it would be subtle such as how movies talk about dollars, euro's etc. im yt to be convinced of a big budget high profile movie having a whole storyline revolving around bitcoin

Jon Stewart was funny as heck...
