Title: 5 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC setup!
Post by: kwn on January 20, 2014, 09:17:23 PM
Hi guys,

I got 5 x SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC 100362-2SR Radeon R9 290 4GB 512-bit GDDR5 Video Cards coming my way today!!!

Now I'm still deciding on what motherboard to get.

What is the best mobo to get for a 5 gpu setup that's not too finicky something that will just be reliable. (at the time that this is written)

Right now I'm looking at the
GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-OC LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
vs
ASUS Z87-WS Socket 1150 WorkStation ATX MB (Z87-WS)

Also I'm open to other suggestions on mobos.

I don't have risers right now so I'm looking to house 4 of these cards per one mobo without raisers. (because I don't have any at this moment also not sure which to buy!)

Also what power supply should i get!?!?!

Much appreciated!

Thanks

I just picked up 4 of these cards myself.

You will probably need a very high-end PSU to run them(1600W minimum) or have a dual PSU setup since they're overclocked.

They run hot. I would not recommend putting more than 2 on a MoBo without risers.

I recommend powered risers. I had a lot of hardware errors with unpowered risers.

You need x1-x16 powered risers like these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Powered-PCI-E-Extension-Cable-1X-To-16X-Riser-Extender-Card-with-MOLEX-LTC-DOGE-/181307258132?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a36c13514).  4/5 290s inside the board all scrunched up is a very bad idea.

Mainboard: MSI Z87-G45  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130693)
 >>> About as good as you are will get for slot quantity and arrangement / affordability for the LGA1150 stuff.  You could do 2 up, 3 down for maximum spacing / airflow.  So, 3 powered risers linked up top.

PSU: 2 x Seasonic Platinum 1000w  (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151105)
 >>> My 4 290 rig pulls 1320w from the wall with each card @ stock volts + 965/1475.  You can easily figure each 290 for minimum 300w at stock clocks.  In other words, your typical 1500/1600w unit will be maxed out by the cards alone..  You will need a little device like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-Pin-20-4-Secondary-Dual-PSU-ATX-Power-Supply-Adaptor-Connector-cable-20cm-/261375387343?pt=US_Power_Cables_Connectors&hash=item3cdb2fe6cf) to get both power supplies working at the same time.

Ignore the mining boards from Asrock / Biostar until they come down in price.  They are novelties until supply meets demand.

Our 290 (non-x) pull ~330W per card. Our 5 GPU rig pulls ~1750W.

Sounds about right. I'm running a 1300 Watt PSU and was trying to get 4 of them going. Once I dropped to 3, my stability suddenly got 100x better.

For my 4 xfx reference blower model 290s with 100% uptime since rig inception in sgminer:
Code:
--no-submit-stale -I 20 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 20481 -g 1 --gpu-fan 90 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-engine 965 --gpu-memclock 1500

Hey atp, what's the difference between sgminer and cgminer? Just a guess, but is sgminer designed for scrypt and has support following the cgminer 3.7.2 version?

SGMiner is the logical gpu-only extension of cgminer, but maintained by someone else.  SGMiner fixes some very critical issues with cgminer and gpus.

I highly recommend it, especially if you have 7950s.  My WUs have never looked better on them with the optimized bins.

Have you got 5x 290 Tri-x setup yet?

Interested to see if they are stable, as the R9 290's are hit and miss with more than 3.

Hello, what is the cheapest board you would recommend for two R9 290?

I currently have an Asus F A55M LE running with two R9 280x and its all good I get about 730kh's each one

Looks like you are connected to middlecoin - you should drop --no-submit-stale for that pool.

Why are not recommended for HD 7950 mine with cgminer????
I don't know but 4 of my 9 hd 7950 died mining with cgminer with no aparently reason. I had a moderate overclock and the gpu's never exceeded 75º.
Now these gpu's don't show display. When windows go to boot the failure cards don't show display and the same in Linux. I only see screen until the motherboard bios logo.

This worked like a charm in sgminer.

Thanks!

I have 4 running stable paired with 4GB of ram and the cheapest LGA1150 CPU.
Pulling a consistent 945KH/s+ on 3 cards, and over 900KH/s on 1 card (which won't take the memory overclock... yet), straight out of the box with no burn-in.

I see no reason I couldn't add a fifth (other then that I can get other 290 cards for cheaper, so I won't bother)

Where you have this rig? Temperatures so good :)
You have special place, or smth?
Maybe undervolting?
