Hi guys,
I got 5 x SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC 100362-2SR Radeon R9 290 4GB 512-bit GDDR5 Video Cards coming my way today!!!
Now I'm still deciding on what motherboard to get.
What is the best mobo to get for a 5 gpu setup that's not too finicky something that will just be reliable. (at the time that this is written)
Right now I'm looking at the GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-OC LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS vs ASUS Z87-WS Socket 1150 WorkStation ATX MB (Z87-WS)
Also I'm open to other suggestions on mobos.
I don't have risers right now so I'm looking to house 4 of these cards per one mobo without raisers. (because I don't have any at this moment also not sure which to buy!)
Also what power supply should i get!?!?!
Much appreciated!
Thanks

I just picked up 4 of these cards myself.
You will probably need a very high-end PSU to run them(1600W minimum) or have a dual PSU setup since they're overclocked.
They run hot. I would not recommend putting more than 2 on a MoBo without risers.
I recommend powered risers. I had a lot of hardware errors with unpowered risers.

You need x1-x16 powered risers like these. 4/5 290s inside the board all scrunched up is a very bad idea. Mainboard: MSI Z87-G45 >>> About as good as you are will get for slot quantity and arrangement / affordability for the LGA1150 stuff. You could do 2 up, 3 down for maximum spacing / airflow. So, 3 powered risers linked up top. PSU: 2 x Seasonic Platinum 1000w >>> My 4 290 rig pulls 1320w from the wall with each card @ stock volts + 965/1475. You can easily figure each 290 for minimum 300w at stock clocks. In other words, your typical 1500/1600w unit will be maxed out by the cards alone.. You will need a little device like this to get both power supplies working at the same time. Ignore the mining boards from Asrock / Biostar until they come down in price. They are novelties until supply meets demand.

Our 290 (non-x) pull ~330W per card. Our 5 GPU rig pulls ~1750W.

Sounds about right. I'm running a 1300 Watt PSU and was trying to get 4 of them going. Once I dropped to 3, my stability suddenly got 100x better.

Just a guess, but is sgminer designed for scrypt and has support following the cgminer 3.7.2 version?

snip Hey atp, what's the difference between sgminer and cgminer? Just a guess, but is sgminer designed for scrypt and has support following the cgminer 3.7.2 version? SGMiner is the logical gpu-only extension of cgminer, but maintained by someone else. SGMiner fixes some very critical issues with cgminer and gpus. I highly recommend it, especially if you have 7950s. My WUs have never looked better on them with the optimized bins.

Have you got 5x 290 Tri-x setup yet?
Interested to see if they are stable, as the R9 290's are hit and miss with more than 3.
