Title: A way to filter out bogus accounts
Post by: stingraydiver on June 18, 2018, 08:06:04 PM
A simple way to filter out bogus accounts is to require KYC.  If an account has been verified, they have greater posting abilities.  If they haven't been verified, they are in read only.  This seems like it would weed out bots and spammers!

I would be willing to do KYC to keep my account!

I'll get right on that, just as soon as hell freezes over.

I realize this has been spoken of before.  I also understand the merit system was instituted to help combat the issue.  I am ready for change!  I will volunteer to help.  What have other forum members done besides being keyboard cowboys?

Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!

No, no, a thousand times NO.

As much as the account farming spammer population drives me batty, instituting a KYC policy would be so much worse and would be against what much of bitcoin stands for.  There are ways to combat spam that have yet to be implemented--like tougher rules for bounty managers and project developers and so forth--and this forum does not need people's dox.

TL;DR Fuck that.

Forgot to add: How many times has bitcointalk gotten hacked?  There's no way I'm going to trust this forum with any of my dox just to be a member here.

It certainly doesn't have to be a full KYC audit.  I mean it is not like we have to comply with any governmental regulations.  Just something to let the forum know you are who you say you are.

I do like your ideas for tougher rules on bounty managers and project developers.  You see, like reasonable men we are already finding common ground!

If you knew what I have gone through as a scam buster with my identity known, you would realize this is a bad idea.  :/

I do not know any forum which would follow the idea of KYC, almost all people hide their identity here to write freely what do they want. But I see KYC moods are just raising over community, pretty possible that it's going to be the next step about the forum improvement after the merit system  :) well, who knows!?

You remind of the type of people who are ready to do their KYC's for the bounty tokens.

If you knew what I have gone through as a scam buster with my identity known, you would realize this is a bad idea.  :/
Have been there and I admit, people have threatened to hurt me in real life and rape my little sister (if I had one). Knowing that my dox resides in a cloud, I'll be exposing myself to a number of criminals.

Cringe worthy but sadly these people exist. I don't think they understand the full ramifications of what is at play here, and sadly use the logic "I have nothing to hide".

I live in hope that one day KYC will mean 'know your content'. The best way to fight the spammers is for the mods to delete rubbish posts.

Big no as it is completely against one of the things crypto stands for.

Now if multiple account create from a single ip then it stays on read only mod. So, I think your desired think is already on the forum. Though it is on another way. KYC can be bogus as now a days there are a lots of people who can edit any data. Also it is not a paid site. And many accounts being created each day. TO check these accounts need many workers but it requires payment. Where forum is free then how will pay them. Also there is an another thing, block-chain created to keep users anonymous if forum requires KYC then it will be alternate way to invent the block-chain system.

I wouldn't understand KYC on Bitcoin forum, but I can say that some forums have KYC. Users without verification can post, send PM's and etc on that forum. Unverified users have only one restriction - they can't enter into marketplace. It was made to reduce number of scammers. And it's not traditional KYC where you upload your passport/id card. You have to send few € from your bank account tto bank account of forum to verify your identity. Sorry for a little off-topic, but I just wanted to say that some forums have KYC. But I can't imagine anything similar on Bitcointalk.

KYC will not be helpful, it may prevent alt accounts yes! However how can you filter shitposters by just doing verification? So I should send an ID with a requirement of sending an essay to ensure that I'm a good poster? As you said, "greater posting abilities"  ;D Kidding aside, yes it will contradict crypto as the aim is being anonymous.

Common sense will tell you that KYC in a forum that fights against centralization is mere stupidity and ignorance. You're posting as if you got nothing to lose when your identity is being exposed online. This is a forum, not an exchange site that needs regulations from the government.

I don't believe crypto has ever stood for anonymity.  It stands for digital transfer of value, and if you include the blockchain, it stands for an uneditable transaction.

Anonymity is just something added on so people can receive irreversible transactions and then scam.  :/
