Title: Bitcoin stole my weekend!
Post by: nextnonce on March 15, 2011, 08:42:16 PM
A friend of mine introduced me to bitcoins a couple weeks ago and while skeptical at first, I was interested enough to look into it further.  I'm a huge fan of alternative currencies, especially considering the gross mismanagement of the USD and other fiat currencies.

Two weeks.  That's all it took for me to go from a skeptic to sold.  "Sold" as in, spent-the-weekend-integrating-bitcoins-into-my-website sold (I used mybitcoin.com's nifty little shopping cart interface tool and tested it with my 0.05 faucet BTC).

My site is a browser-based MMO that draws many parallels to the bitcoin concept.  The big one is that all the in-game money is mined, requiring an expenditure of effort in the form of opportunity cost.  This gives the money a real value in the game compared to most MMOs where gold mostly trickles in automatically.

Already my users are very interested in this "new mine" I've introduced that allows non-USD-paying players a chance to mine for valuable in-game capital using their CPU.  I'm very glad to have found bitcoin.org and am grateful for the opportunity to help promote it.  Thanks for reading.

Awesome! I'm going to have to go check out that MMO. :-)

Glad to have you onboard.

That game looks fun. I might give it a try.

Hopefully you informed your users that the chance of winning a block without joining a pool is very low.

Yes, I did say that it's a bit like mining for an orange, which is the rarest type of thing you can find in the game.  A few users have already looked into joining mining pools and are sharing that information with each other.

Hey I'm one of those players, thanks japhet (thats what we call him over there) I'm sold on this too. Even trying something fun with bitcoins that I talked about in the off topic forums...

Anyway this is a cool thing you guys have I'm sad I didn't get in on it sooner.

This game is cool; thanks for accepting bitcoins!  The more vendors the better!  ;D

I don't get it. How are you profiting if your users are mining independently? At first I thought you had set up a pool and gave out in-game gold in exchange for keeping the mined bitcoins to yourself but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Players mine independently for bitcoins and then trade with me in exchange for in-game credits.  Previously the only way to get credits was via PayPal.

Hi! I'm also a member on that site and though I didn't try the bitcoins feature because I'm 10 and there's a password that my parents have to type in before I install anything(and they make sure it's "appropriate" before they type it in), it sounds cool and if I somehow manage to install it somewhere, then
yay!
Dang this marquee thing is cool... ;D

Oh ok, so just a regular payment method. The "new mine" thing made me think it was a pool.

Btw, your game looks very cool. I would try it out but I'm scared it might be addicting.

I was attracted to the pretty graphics up front.

Then when it came to geeky in-game jargon -- I ran away.

I checked out your site.  Really cool.  I'll probably never have time to play, but it's great having you as part of the Bitcoin team.

It sounds like you started just like me. A friend posted on Facebook about an anonymous and decentralized virtual currency, and ever since then I have spent hours a day learning more. I've purchased two video cards to start mining and I have offered some things for sale for Bitcoins (although not through my site...yet).

You don't really have to install bitcoin. Just download the .exe and double click on it. Hopefully it will work. That said, you probably won't generate any bitcoins in the near future because the network already has lots of people competing for them.

If he's running Windows 7 they might have it set up to keep programs downloaded from the Internet from running or writing to the hard drive until approved by the administrator.

There's got to be a way. Try putting a fine layer of dust on the key board. Get your parents to type in the password to install something appropriate. When they go away, look at the fingerprints to figure out what letters they've typed. Now, make an educated guess as to what the password is.

You can give yourself admin access from outside of Windows with this:
http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

There's no security when the attacker (you ;)) has physical access to the machine while it is being used.

If you are really 10, I have a word of advice for you:never let your curiosity die. Explore and learn all you can. You have pretty much all the time in the world and you are already self-aware. Time is a commodity and you have it in the distilled form known as youth.

On another note, I'd recommend just telling your parents what it is and point them toward bitcoin.org. It's not a malicious program or anything so you should be able to get permission pretty easily.

Yeah, don't do that. There is pretty much no way that parents who restrict downloads are going to learn about and approve something to do with new online currency.

But you probably weren't going to get much from mining anyway and you can still use Bitcoin by using an online wallet, no ID required. Then you can start accumulating by using the faucet and bitcoin bonus. After that maybe some kind of online work. Actually I think bitcoin bonus has some kind of referral system, maybe figure that out and show some of your friends.

Depending on the security settings, you could download bitcoin (or one of the miners) and put it in a folder in your own documents. I assume you have your own account on the machine. Don't need admin access there, although windows might restrict strange EXEs running depending on the security level, no matter where they are.

Why not? Bitcoin can be very educational.

Just because parents exercise some control over what their 10 year old (!) does online doesn't mean they're hyper-conservative or closed minded.

That said, given that this forum does allow people to discuss trading of drugs, weapons, porn and so on they'd have to be quite relaxed :-)

If you can't install any software, the best way to get started is to just read the forums, the wiki, see if you can start to understand the more technical content and figure out how BitCoin works. You could also chat to people on IRC using the FreeNode webchat interface (channel is #bitcoin-discuss or #bitcoin-dev).

Maybe your parents will like it so much they'll get you a mining rig and pay your allowance out of it.

Well actually, I just went on my dad's computer(which is a windows 7 and is pretty much ALWAYS logged in on his account which is an admin so he doesn't have to type in pass for downloads) and just somehow accidentally clicked on the download link to this, so now I'm just running it on my dad's comp.

If your dad gives you crap, ask him "why does Mom say that twelve inches is this big?" while gesturing some length obviously shorter than twelve inches.

Though I'm pretty sure I said this before in the earlier part of this topic, well to sum it up for you:
  • I can't install things on my computer until one of my parents type in this admin password.
  • I went on my dad's computer which is pretty much always logged in on his comp acc(which is an admin acc so the admin pass is not needed for downloads)
  • I magically accidentally clicked on the bitcoin download link. :D

Heh :) I guess BitCoin is an anti-trojan - attempts to pay you rather than scam you.

However, casual installs like this could lead to bitcoin loss over time potentially, but on the other hand given how long it takes to mine just one without a GPU, it's probably a minimal risk.

Get a hardware keylogger and put it in series with the keyboard cable.  Then have your parents install something innocuous like a math study program.  After they are done, retrieve the administrator password from the keylogger.

??? [sarcasm=100/100]I'm sure my parents would let me go buy a keylogger.[/sarcasm] Or maybe I could secretly install a software keylogger on one of my parents' computers, and I won't need the password for installing on either of their computers, so then one of their passwords might be the same as my comp's admin pass....

Wait, so we are encouraging this ten-year-old to disobey his parents and go behind their back to use bitcoin?  Are we that desperate for more bitcoin members?  What's going to happen when they discover what's going on and come on this forum to find admins and hero members encouraging their kid to disobey them and download "questionable" (in their mind) software?

I can hear the child porn accusations already:  "Bitcoin, a nefarious online pseudo-currency that is used to lure in young children, going behind their parents' back."

Kid, you should definitely tell your parents about bitcoin.  The best thing to do would be direct them to bitcoin.org or http://www.bitcoinme.com/ or have one of the admins (like Gavin) send them an email explaining what bitcoin is.

Did you think the Bitcoin community was going to encourage unconditional obedience to parental authority? :) I like the idea of thinking for yourself and bypassing restrictions.

Young people will be an important part of the future Bitcoin economy. They are unable to acquire USD easily, so they will use bitcoins instead.

Hi fatcom4. Here's something that might help you:

1. Download Backtrack 4 from here:  http://www.backtrack-linux.org/download.php?fname=bt4r2 (http://www.backtrack-linux.org/download.php?fname=bt4r2)
2. Get a flash drive(atleast 2GB)
3. Copy Backtrack to your flash drive using Unetbootin program. This is explained here: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/tutorials/usb-live-install/ (http://www.backtrack-linux.org/tutorials/usb-live-install/)

Now you're all set to get the password.

4. Reboot your PC from the usb flash drive.
5. What to do next is explained in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTqV8oTzK4M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTqV8oTzK4M)

Assuming password is not too long and difficult, you should have it in about 10 mins. Then restart your computer and it will boot up normally into windows.

No purchase necessary, nothing to install. I hope you see how powerfull knowledge can be and that this will encourage you to know more about Bitcoin, Linux and Open Source projects in general.

Good luck!
