Title: Samsung says that smartphones are the safest way to store cryptocurrencies
Post by: Brazio on July 29, 2018, 05:10:06 AM
Samsung Electronics, a giant of the Smartphone manufacturing industry, recently commented through its official blog that cryptocurrency wallets based on mobile phones are the safest option for the short and medium term storage of cryptocurrencies.

The post explains that smartphone-based cryptocurrency wallets are a very safe place to store digital money, at least the equivalent of the amount we could store in our physical wallet. To save long-term cryptocurrencies, Samsung recommends creating multiple backups of the private key associated with the wallets.

The Smartphones producer commented that private keys should be stored offline to maximize their security, which means that they should not reside on a mobile phone or any device that connects to the internet regularly.

The blog post comments that mobile phone cryptocurrency wallets are the best place to store "spendable" money due to the phone feature called Trusted Execution Environment (TEE).

The TEE runs its own execution independently, which means that the RAM and storage of the phone are separated from the main operating system of smartphones.

Because of this, the Android operating system can not directly access the TEE, even if the operating system is hacked. In this sense, you can only access the TEE through an application programming interface (API).

This is great! Smartphones can now function as hard wallets? Wow! Just wow! It will be more convenient for us because we can now bring our hard wallets anywhere because we always have our smart phones. We can easily access our coins if ever we need to do some withdrawals or deposits because the wallets are already installed in it. Kuddos to Samsung for making this innovation!

I think saving digital money on the phone is essential but it is easy to hack or steal. Because it seems that the android operating system is an open operating system and it is easy for hackers to hack and steal data

have you read the post ! it said "The TEE runs its own execution independently, which means that the RAM and storage of the phone are separated from the main operating system of smartphones" that means even if your mobile gets hacked , they won't be able to access your wallet . a big company like Samsung already aware of hacking attempts of smart phones and with this feature , i can see huge leap towards more innovations like this .

I heard that several companies have already developed smartphones with an integrated wallet for crypto currency storage. Thus, if the wallet does not have an Internet connection, the attackers will not be able to steal the means from it - this is possible only with direct physical access to the information carrier. However, this is also the main minus of such a wallet: it can only store crypto currency, but does not allow using it directly.

Smartphones are the most secure way to store cryptocurrencies untill someone steals your smartphone,or you lose it,or it breaks. ;D
What happens if some of the above happens? Can the Samsung developers answer this question?
I prefer my crypto wallets to be on some other device, with private keys printed and stored in my basement. ;D

I am really happy and also surprise to know that now we can use the smartphones as new hardware wallet just like the other hardware wallets like Trezor , and Ledger Nano S. This really shows that now the compatition is going to go in a tough way for all the smartphone companies like Apple, HTC, Microsoft, and   Nokia and they will try to make some new cryptocurrency supported services and tools like wallets, exchanges, software by which crypto trading will run in a much smoother way.

It is a great news, smartphones are now open to accept cryptos. Using smartphones as a cryptowallet will be very useful and easy t o use. Wallets will be easy to access without the use of internet and surely they have something on their mind to retrieve our Cryptos in case we lose our phone.

First Opera says people can store coins inside of their browser, then Samsung says smartphones are great for storing cryptos... There are some serious problems with this statement. The first problem is that while flash drivers don't usually break, so the wallet is probably safe if you make sure you know where it is, a smartphone can break by simply falling down to hard from a table. The second problem is that people lose their phones quite often. Surely if you stored your keys not on the phone, the wallet will probably not be accessed, you won't be able to get to your coins as well. Another issue is that it is weird to recommend storing coins on a smartphone that doesn't connect to the Internet regularly. Who on Earth would use a smartphone without the Internet?

It's the most secure in terms of what exactly? It cannot be hacked? I don't think it's very difficult for a hacker to get into a mobile phone, but I'm not one myself so cannot comment accurately on that. Is it stored in a cold environment on the phone that cannot be accessed unless the user opens it with the key?

And of course, the question of loss. I think that if you lose it, it would be the same as losing your wallet. This might also make phones a new target for theft, as hard drives have become. You never know how many crypto coins could be hiding on a hard drive these days. Imagine if you told someone 10 years ago that they could keep a million dollars worth of money on a hard drive. They'd call you crazy!

Mobile app wallets are basically optimized for retail transactions to paying for stuff with bitcoin or another cryptocurrency.

But because your encryption keys are stored on the phone, you lose your coins if you lose your device. Personally I  think it is not an option for the masses to store their coins on their phone. People loose or break their phones all the time. Also imagine what would happen if your fingerprint scanner malfunctions. You wont be able to reach your find until you fix your phone in a service center.... not a good idea.

Damns samsung is just trying to get into the market first. It is not serious from their side. All they want is to convince crypto holders that they should switch to samsung because soon it will be the no1 crypto-compatible phone company...

Yeah this is a great innovation for the wallets since now smartphones will stand as hard wallets thats cool.

But how can we assured the security since smartphones are not that secured compare to IOS(apple)?

Maybe this is the most important question to be answered as the community are tired from scamming and hacking all we need is security because our funds keeps for future,

If you need to save them on data center of phone supplier it is not secure, if you store or save the data somewhere lese you have exactly the same danger than wht we have today...

I'm not too sure about that, security largely depends on the users. If they're going to install potentially harmful apps, then there's not much you can do against them getting malware from that.
I would think that some malware can easily record key input and send screen-grabs back to the creator of said malware.

I don't think smartphones are ideal for storing crypto, even not short term. There are tons of apps that get into the Google Play store, while they have malware.

So it is kind of completely different storage within the phone which will distinguish the storage of crypto graphs and hence our coins? Isn't that is the same thing as storing the crypto coins in the off-line wallets over a PC or desktop. Furthermore I do see same thing with the hardware wallet too. Well its sole purpose is to store the crypto's and it is well separated from the online network as long as you do not connect it to the internet. While on the other hand crypto currencies in the phone will be connected to internet all the time and may get accessible with smart hacks. You never know what might go wrong mate.

I disagree with this statement from Samsung, even if it was a safe option then it is still not the safest option. Offline storage is considered safe, but that is not really the case with phones. The purpose of a portable phone is to communicate with others over distances, so you are always connected to some sort of telephone network. New smart phones also include different wireless communication functionalities like WiFi, which stops you from being offline. Malware could potentially access your phone via WiFi or other forms of communication and steal your private keys. The most safe option for storage is really a paper wallet, digital devices with wireless communication functionalities cannot compete with that.

The smartphones has no high security level that can be trust for our precious coins i would rather use my local wallets that offers four different coins that can buy en sell without using exchangers

well I completely disagree with this statement because there is lot of risk in storing crypto in a mobile wallet like smart phone. Few examples are your smart phone can be stolen or misplaced very easily as you carry it with you all the time. And also another disadvantage in mobile wallet is their security level. When compared to hardware wallets like nano ledger the security level is very primitive.

Samsung with this TEEE tech, will rule the smartphone device industry as they are planning to add a hard wallet feature with every phone which will give this brand an unique place in Crypto market.

What I knew was the best way to store your cryptos was to use a hardware wallet.
Now with this post I undestood that android smartphone provide the same level of security like a hardware wallet. Thats good to hear, but still I would prefer a hardware wallet over any other option, as I have a very less chance of loosing my wallet and a very high chance of loosing a smartphone.

I absolutely agree with what they said. Hardware wallets are accessed through mobile phones and laptops usually. But, the advantage of smartphones are that they are less prone to getting affected by malware and virus. Moreover, 2FA that helps keeping your wallet secure, uses mobile phones as authorizing permission to its users.

If you consider a smartphone's capability of saving itself from malicious softwares and trojans you would understand that why Samsung has made such statement. Laptops tend to get attacked by virus and malwares more often than smartphones which may cause the user with a hardware wallet installed on laptop to panic for no reason, whereas smartphones don't have any such issues.

I agree that smartphones are very secured because they hardly gets targeted by the hackers and viruses. Moreover even if phone gets lost, you can remotely control it. There is also 2FA which uses the phone as a medium to confirm user access. The same cannot be said about other devices which are used for installing hardware wallets.

It could be useful that smartphones can be use to store cryptocurrencies. But what about if we lose that phone what will happen? And are we safe with the hackers trying to hack our phones?
If you read the post carefully you can find out that the OP mentions that the private key should be kept as a backup in an offline place.
It's funny reading this that a smartphone company tells the people to use smartphones to store their money. Good promotion eh?
It's not the first time that a smartphone company is integrating a cryptocurrency wallet into their phones and branding it as a blockchain powered phone.
HTC had previously introduced a phone which had Exodus wallet integrated within it. We can't say it as a safest way to stroe crypto but yeah it sure is a convenient and efficient way to store cryptocurrencies.

Some people use their smartphone wallets for airdrops. There's Jaxx, Trust, O3, Coinomi... It seems to me it is quite easy and I don't know why wouldn't it be safe? As long as you keep your private keys and passwords stored safe somewhere off-line (written on a piece of paper and stored somewhere safe for example).
But I don't se how it could be safer than a plain paper wallet or a Nano Ledger+Meta Mask?

Smartphones aside from being handy and portable has become one of the most important gadget and technological device we always use today, for communication, browsing the net and now hopefully make monetary transactions via blockchain technology itself. Haha good point. This thread has drawn a lot of attention just because if its name. I wouldn't ever be so assuming to believe that a phone is the safest place to store anything, let alone a savings account of bitcoin.

Although people have begin to live solely off of their phones these days. A lot of people don't even use computers anymore. They only need access to email, social media, banks, and now crypto wallets. So I guess if it has that much value, you could try to treat it as an account. With a detachable chip for savings, of course.

The point is we can bring everywhere our spendable crypto's. If you are a person that loves to spend crypto everywhere in your place that has shops accepting crypto then you have to bring it. And about the funds, they warned that its recommended to create your own back up. Being a responsible crypto holder fits it if your phone has been stolen or damaged.

This statement "Samsung says that smartphone are the safest way to store cryptocurrencies " implies that Samsung smartphone can now function as a hardware wallet because it is something that is tangible. The problem with this concept is that when you lost your phone. When you lost your phone, there are many possibilities that could happen in an instant. Your bitcoin might be turned into nothing in just a matter of time. Also, it might be vulnerable to hackers because that is a phone and a phone is really vulnerable to hacking. A proper care must be employed when using this kind of wallet.

I don't think that's true at least not for all the situations, a good hacker always thinks if something is accessible to you then that is also if possible to all around the world because they are going to spoof your identity and become you. We can take a serious level of information if they can get around your device in this case that is a smartphone. Let's talk about an unimaginable scenario where you have to keep a backup of a phone let's say nandroid backup and the hacker gets that somehow now he will not only have access to your cryptocurrency details but also to everything around your phone in exact order that means even you have open any tab in Chrome that information is also available to the hacker.

It's a normal thing that they do it and they will keep doing it because that's how you make money. Smartphone can be stolen much easier than a computer from your home. Also, you can never be sure what tracking devices are in your phones.

You can always keep a paper wallet at home or have another wallet on another device so that if you lose the phone or somebody steals it from you will be able to move the money before they're able to crack the wallet. I wouldn't keep huge money on a phone. Some spare change for everyday use, nothing more.

Smartphones could be the key but with the back door reset method is still up there in case we missed our phones or it may be stolen the hackers would have an easy access to your wallet unless of course if the passcode won't gone inside of the wallet. It could be dangerous if someone know that you do have a wallet in your smartphone.

I do like the article. Samsung is maybe company that is doing the most to create telephone suitable for majority, to satisfy all the needs of average user and always being innovative. It is explained good but I still am not a hundred percent sure in device security. Beside that, it is not impossible to lose a phone, it can happen to most carefully person. At the end, I am totally okay to storage mine on desktop for now. When btc and alt coins became a worldwide excepted as a regular source of payment, I will buy one, just for everyday needs.

we are surrounded by technologies, we can't tell that smartphones are the safest way to store our coins, still we are transacting using the given system, there's still possibility that it can be hacked by someone, it should tighten the security of the system where we store our coins so that we can store our coins everywhere using a trusted system.

I think that is a great idea in terms of conveniency. Here in the Philippines, workers have a lot of atm cards or credit cards. It's very much handy and not really convenient. So having a smartphone wallet is really benefial most especially to workers. The downside of it is that, your account and money are not that safe. The fact that it can be hacked or it can be stolen by holdapers and such. But all in all, it's a great step in advancing and diversifying to the usual concepts of keeping money.

whats the big point? will Samsung cover any loss for stolen phone?
The point is we can bring everywhere our spendable crypto's. If you are a person that loves to spend crypto everywhere in your place that has shops accepting crypto then you have to bring it. And about the funds, they warned that its recommended to create your own back up. Being a responsible crypto holder fits it if your phone has been stolen or damaged.
They have a point but looking at a big picture I think that there's something in what they are saying. It's their form of advertising their product and in that case they will win over us. I support them on what they are saying because smartphones can be really used to store cryptos. Aside from that you can only bring it with you.

Even how secure your crypto asstes will be, hackers can still hack them, that is if you as the owner is careless enough of your wallet information because even a slight amount of information a hacker can get, then expect for the worst of it as you may find zero balance in your wallet the moment they will ransack your crypto wallet.

Hackers stole Apple user's data (and it's not only about Apple), mobile phones are burning, etc. How can anyone believe it and be sure in its safety? It's just another way of promoting the brand in order to get more buyers and nothing more. Maybe I'm mistaken but I would not believe it.

Its great to know that we can store our cryptocurrencies on our smartphones, but is it really safe? Like, how and what will happen if our smartphones lost. Can we restore our lost data of crypto in our new phones. Or if its stolen are we sure that it will not be hacked. Questions like that follows on our mind if we hear topics like this.

It's actually true that using smartphones are more of a secure and easier way to use the cryptocurrency and blockchain system. It displays an easier view in comparison to the other electronic devices, and also the smartphone based wallets are more secure than ever. That way, if people get used to using cryptocurrency over smartphones the rate of the growth of the community increases even more, because mostly people prefer using smartphones over anything being the easiest and the most convenient way possible.

cryptocurrency wallets based on mobile phones are the safest option for the short and medium term storage of cryptocurrencies.
I'm glad that someone, and take note of its big name in the industry, also agreed that mobile wallets can be considered as the safest way of storing crypto because that's what I've been thinking of all the way. Yeah! Some of you might disagree and still go in the favor of cold storage (it does) but when it comes to storing only few coins then not bad to use mobile wallets since they are more practical and convenient.
To save long-term cryptocurrencies, Samsung recommends creating multiple backups of the private key associated with the wallets.

The Smartphones producer commented that private keys should be stored offline to maximize their security, which means that they should not reside on a mobile phone or any device that connects to the internet regularly.
Though my private key is not in my hands. I know either why Coins.ph, the wallet I'm using, don't allow its users to have access on their own private keys. After a couple minutes of research, here's what I found: https://support.coins.ph/hc/en-us/articles/360000071761-Can-I-have-access-to-my-private-keys- . Nevertheless, I don't worry about the security of my coins at all because I'm confident of my wallet's credibility and trustworthiness.

Ps: But still, much better if you hold your own private key.

Lots of smartphones have a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). So, hackers have no ability to get into and steal data. But experts say that saving large amount is not a good idea in any case.

They do have specified that smartphones are the best option to store your cryptocurrencies for short to medium term storage. Which I am inclining to agree on, remember if you are expecting to spend cryptocurrencies within that year the best wallet you will be using is of course mobile wallets as this is ideal for payments on the go, of course you don't expect to be holding cryptos worth millions to mobile wallet apps but keeping a few thousands won't hurt as it is safe depending on the level of your security from both the app and yourself to your phone.

I remembered the first time I downloaded my local wallet it asked me if I want to use my finger print as a way to unlock my wallet or a regular 6 digit pin or even both. I chose the 2 modes of security in order to protect my BTC more. It does not hurt by adding a little bit more protection to your cryptos on the go.

Still I think that mobile wallets could be rather safe for keeping coins.
In general everything depends how caucious you are, how to you keep your phone safe and secure, are you using mobile antimalware, do you have some tools to protect your phone in case of theft or when being lost. There are many factors that influence security of coins on your mobile.

Yes you are right but if you talk about smart phone then may be PC ,Laptop also can get hack. so both are same. But now a days there are more bio-metric verification options available in  smartphone which can secure our money. So I think whatever samsung claims is right and i think there should be another button like hardware wallet in future models for conforming transaction for 2FA purpose.

Although it says that smartphones are the safest way to store electronic money, the flaw still exists. Smart Phone Company has added that TEE on the Samsung Knox platform offers higher levels of security. The company warns that when TEE hardware is not available on laptops and desktops, private keys stored in these devices can easily be compromised. TEE provided, Samsung said that a new program would inevitably be faulty when the device was designed as a crypto key that stores its own key on the smartphone's hard drive, thus making it vulnerable to attack. Moreover, the wallet can also be infected with malware.

I don't think keeping your crypto credentials kept in your smart phones are safer than any other alternative because your phone is easier to steal than your PC or any other device. Once the criminals stole your phone, they can always find a way to get into your phone's core and steal any information they can.

This sounds promising, however according to john mcafee smartphones are more vulnerable than desktop computers, but base on the explation of the article it has a point of security thats the first time i heard of that TEE thing and if it really works the adoption of cryptocuurrencies i think will be faster than ever before.

I agree that private key should not be place in a device like smart phone because it can easily be hack by hackers. I hope that Samsung phones are secure because if this information is legitimate then I guess we need to shift our device to Samsung.

all Samsung wants is to sell more of his products :)
smartphones might be a good way to store cryptocurrencies but not for everyone and in every scenario
for a day to day use and small change it is very convenient and easy
but will you ever trust several bitcoins to your smartphone? I highly doubt that
but for Samsung this statement is just another PR action and a marketing move, so well played

Yes really good news. Huawei also announced plan to create a Bitcoin wallet app a couple of months ago - http://www.ccreview.com/news/bitmain-launches-first-huawei-store-bitcoin-wallet-app/

Really, this is really a great news. I cannot imagine, that someday every people using their phone will going to be useful to store any crypto/bitcoins through the hard wallet development not only in the smartphones but also to all cellphone companies as well.

I really agree with Samsung's opinion.. Nowadays smartphones are the safest place to store crypto assets because,
- smartphones have become a primary human need, and are always carried anywhere.
- The Google Authenticator app is very efficient on smartphones.
- backing up data is easier and safer

This reason I think makes a smartphone the safest place to store crypto assets.

Well, the first aim of Samsung is to sell as much phones as they can so I see this as an advertisment. They hope to get even more customers, especialy those who use Bitcoins. Smartphones could be very convenient for storing Bitcoin especialy because we carry our phones always with us but maybe not the safest, at least not for every user. There is no 100% security so besides storing Bitcoin there choose also some other places to store your coins. To split your coins is the safest way, if something happenes you will not lose all your coins.

Well, for me, I definitely agree with this. Because right now, I am just using my smartphone storing my bitcoins and crypto currencies just with the use of my phone having the different mobile version wallets I have. I am very grateful that I can pay, buy and any other payment transactions I can make just with a little time and less effort going to send and receive money around the globe.

Samsung Electronics, a giant of the Smartphone manufacturing industry, recently commented through its official blog that cryptocurrency wallets based on mobile phones are the safest option for the short and medium term storage of cryptocurrencies.

The role of Samsung by embedding hardware wallets into their cellphones is indeed quite neat and one step ahead, their aim is nothing but so that their sales can penetrate among cryptocurrency users especially bitcoin, as stated by others. But besides that, there are other benefits that we cannot deny that what Samsung does's really making it easier for cryptocurrency users to secure their funds in the cryptocurrency format far from hacking. In the future, it's likely that other cellphones will follow the steps taken by Samsung, so this will certainly raise a number of questions among smartphone buyers, and when that happens, this's an opportunity for us to answer them while educating them about the world of bitcoin/cryptocurrency (hopefully they are many who are interested), so we can expect the growth of new users in the future.

If that is their aim then they are going to fail because we are not like their mindless customers that just have to have the newest smartphone, we can think and we can install our own wallets without any problem in a smartphone if we wanted but many of us do not do that because that is a terrible idea, if you are going to spend that much money to store your coins then it is a better idea to just buy several hardware wallets.

But in my opinion, on the contrary, purses on smartphones, especially Android, are still very vulnerable to security. I have seen someone hack an Android cellphone through a trojan virus inserted in the apk and which the victim will install later. If you choose a smartphone as a wallet, it's better to use apple products that have guaranteed safety

It is good news and flexible solution for those want to store crypto wallet in terms of software but there are bit security issues where these private key can be hacked. But Samsung can build prototype to protect wallet against hackers and provide MFA for accessing Samsung crypto wallet. Or other strong encryption mechanism to adopt for additional security.

I think even with electrum andrioid wallet you can access your wallet by installing it in any smart phones and access it, even the electrum wallet can be accessed any where from passphrase. So you are fully protected but in samsung phone do they give you private key for the wallet so that if the phone gets problem we should be able to acces  the wallet from other option also.

Isn't it offline wallet is the best ?
Because smarthphones are likely connect to the internet, i think it's no way safer than the offline wallet.
Also smarthphone are sometimes missing because we carried it to all places

Complete agreement.Even if the phone is not lost, there are still people who will find a hole in android and steal what is necessary.Just now it is not relevant and no one cares about cryptocurrency wallets.(I mean globally). As soon as everyone starts using cryptocurrency wallets on their smartphones and there will be a lot of money spinning, I’m sure someone will find a way to steal assets.

Has anyone bought the HTC Exodus phone? It's a smartphone specifically designed to keep crypto coins safe with custom OS and whatnot. I have been eyeing that phone for quite some time and am wondering whether or not to splurge on it. HTC claims that the phone is super secure but I don't know. The problem is that HTC are in a very bad shape and can go bankrupt any time now and all support will be dropped abruptly.

Everything that has an advantage, has a disadvantage. Storing crypto using smartphones is good but then what if the phone crashes or gets lost. This is something we should put into consideration. Though its very good being able to access your crypto anywhere at your convenience since they are stored in your phone. Thanks to improved technology

I am agree with samsung. Smartphone ae the safest way to store crytocurrencies. First of all your smartphone is always oon your pocket or on your body so no one can touch it so your privatekeys and password are safe. Next is your back ups. You can sync the site where your account is on log in so you can open it even you forget your password. I hope samsung and other smart phone make some innovation and application to make our bitcoin transaction more comfortable.

So they mean that Android OS is safer than Windows OS to store coins? I have been dealing with crypto for more than 5 years and till now none of my wallets have been hacked. All you need to do is to follow some basic safety measures, such as enabling 2FA and avoid opening wallet links from emails. 2FA alone can prevent robberies 99% of the time.
