Title: [ANN][POOL][VARDIFF] Coin Catcher beta launch - profit switching scrypt pool
Post by: bluemist on February 23, 2014, 04:43:01 PM
After several months of development and testing, Coin Catcher is now ready to be released to the public. From day one, this project was designed to give users an easy and detailed view of their mining activities, and to be as transparent and profitable as possible.

We are running a beta period for approximately 1 month, in which fees will be 0%.
EDIT: BETA period has been extended - pool fees are still fixed at 0% (plus 0.4% trading fee)

JOIN NOW AT:
http://www.coincatcher.net

Key Features:

- Profit switching, currently mining over 30 different coins
- Full transparency - view your current balances for each coin, past trade history and mining details
- Variable difficulty (VARDIFF), giving lower variance to less powerful miners
- Clean and simple to use from both desktop and mobile
- Auto exchanges earnings to BTC
- Automatic payouts daily, for balances over 0.001 BTC
- Unique switching algorithm for increased profitability

More Details:

- Coins with a difficulty too high, or a trade volume too low will be skipped to maximise efficiency.
- 0% pool fees throughout the beta period, increases to 2% after that. Trade fees are 0.4%.
- Proportional payout; unpaid shares are carried over to the next round regardless of the coin.
- BTC payout addresses are tied to an account at registration and cannot be changed. This prevents coins being stolen if an account is compromised.
- Active and ongoing development. As we’re in beta you can expect lots of new features based on feedback from users.

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

Difficulty is currently fixed at 512 but vardiff is definitely something we'd implement if there's a demand for it.

Please let us know if you have any more suggestions :)

alright, tossing 7-8MH your way :)

lets see how this goes

..would be great if we could see blocks found

Cheers! We're actually working on a page of latest blocks at the moment - it should go live in the next day or so.

Also you might notice that balances are a bit delayed, so please allow about an hour after connecting your miner for the coins to be credited.

yeah also the workers hashrates are delayed as well it seems, no biggie as long as it catches up :)

Thanks to everyone who has signed up so far - in just a few hours we have had nearly 50 active workers and over 60MH/s!

Please note that the hashrate and balance reports take approximately an hour to display their true values.

The next features to be launched (in the next couple of days) are:
- Latest blocks solved by the pool
- Reset / change account password

Let us know if you have any questions or feedback in the meantime

Let us know if you have any questions or feedback in the meantime

Questions: Will you have vardiff? Also, when you get bigger and vardiff starts stressing your servers, will you then disable it? How often does the estimated BTC/Mhash earnings information displayed on the homepage change?

edit: Do the worker stats take into account rejects/stales?

Feedback: More stats. Maybe don't require signup for people who aren't too interested in the site's interface?

the interface is pretty cool, i like seeing each workers live hashrates.

i wish there were more stats too, like blocks and maybe have it update faster.. kind of how wafflepool does it

Low rejection rate of 1% is good but after mining for 4+ hours, I've only generated 28.5% of the estimated 0.0126 BTC/MH/day.

We are looking into the possibility of vardiff but you're right about the additional server load. If we do go down that route it will only be if we are confident it can be scaled. Another possibility could be to reduce the difficulty from 512, or to have a dedicated low difficulty server for CPU miners. Homepage stats are calculated and updated once an hour.

edit: Do the worker stats take into account rejects/stales?

The reported hashrates do not include rejects/stales. You can view details of valid & invalid shares in the Statistics box (when logged in).

Feedback: More stats. Maybe don't require signup for people who aren't too interested in the site's interface?

More stats are on the way - I'll keep this post updated. Developing a system to register/login with a BTC address is also a possibility if enough people would find it useful.

This sounds like a negative comment from the wording, but your math shows that you're performing above average :/

4+ hours? Say 5 for an example.

5/24 = 20.8333%

You've generated 28.5%. That's ~7.667% over the projected stats.

Also, you ever hear of variance?

Not 28.5% of the day or 24 hours, 28.5% of 0.000525 BTC/MH/hour.

Use better syntax and context.

I'm assuming you meaning that .000525 is the 28.5% you generated ---> "28.5% of 0.000525 BTC/MH/hour."

Also, variance. Again.

Take 24+ hours and check later.

This is unusually low - I'll look into it properly. The balances do not show up immediately so this - along with variance - is probably playing a significant part when calculating over just a few hours. I had a quick look and the percentage seems to have increased now (when factoring in the lag). In theory as the hashrate increases the pool should become more profitable every hour due to solving blocks more consistently.

I think that the earnings estimation algo needs a bit of tuning, and that while we're still at a relatively low hashrate the actual earnings will fluctuate somewhat. As we're on day 1, the estimation can't take real earnings into account (currently it's based on best case probability) but once we have a couple of days worth of stats it can start factoring them in.

We decided to do the zero fee public beta for reasons such as this one. We'll be closely monitoring and improving profitability and estimations over the coming days now that the hash rate is increasing.

Please keep me updated! Thanks

Will you add other location, like Eu/asia ? :)

For the beta period we are sticking to a single server in the US, but once we launch and start to scale the system we will be adding servers in more countries, most likely starting with eu-west (Ireland).

During the zero fee period it's going to be tricky to offer additional bonuses, but after launch there is definitely scope for bonuses & rewards. Thanks for all your feedback - it's really valuable.

0.0126 BTC/MH/day / 24 hours = 0.000525 BTC/MH/hour.

I will continue to mine then stop and wait for the converted to balance before calculating the average BTC/MH/Hour.

I have stopped mining on one of my account and the total have stabilized for awhile now. Worked out to an average of 0.00027895 BTC/MH/Hour. I think this pool have great potential and would encourage bluemist to keep up the hard work.

An other question ;) :

Do u plan to let us choose to auto trade coin, or keep them.
Like hashcow do, we choose wich coin are traded to btc, and wich one we keep untraded.

Hey NameTaken, thank for your feedback.

0.00027895 per MH/hour works out at around 0.0066948 per MH/day.

The latest estimation was 0.01045525 per MH day (0.00043564 per MH hour) so you earned around 64% of this.

A couple of things to bear in mind -

- You were mining within the first few hours of the pool's beta when we were still establishing the pool's hashrate.
- Due to variance, we can only really get an accurate reading over 24 hours

We realise that payouts are lower than expected and are working on our switching algorithm at the moment. Please bear with us while we improve the profitability.

Should the payouts over a 24 hour period remain low, we'll definitely consider giving bonus payments to our active members - to say thank you for sticking around for the difficult part :)

A few updates

- We've modified our algorithm to switch coins every 20 minutes instead of once an hour. You should start to see an increase in payouts.

- We also tracked down a bug with the proportional payout system that was contributing to the low earnings. This has been fixed and we'll be applying bonus BTC to all users today to compensate.

- New 'Latest Blocks' page added. You can view this here: http://www.coincatcher.net/blocks

Profitability is our main focus at the moment and we will continue to monitor and improve it. Please check back here for more updates.

I appreciate what you're saying about the fees. They are 0% for the beta period while we're still establishing ourselves. Once we come out of beta we plan on using the revenue generated to continue development and for staffing costs in order to offer the best level of service possible.

Would be great to see you on the pool, and cheers for the feedback.

We're now close to 2 days since launch and the response has been fantastic. Cheers to everyone that's come on board so far.

Now that we have a bit of data to work with, we're closely monitoring and analysing the mining efficiency of each coin to help increase the overall profitability. We've turned off a couple of poor performing coins and tweaked the algo to increase efficiency. LottoCoin and GrandCoin have had quite a large share of the mining time and they've been underperforming, so are now disabled for the time being. It's not an instant process, but earnings should increase from day to day as a result.

Requests for vardiff have been flooding in, and so this is one of our key priorities after perfecting the switching algorithm. Thanks for all the feedback!

1st payement received :)

But with around 150kh, i have 33 stales ( ~8%) for the last 24h
On waffle, same hashrate, 0 stales on the same period

While i'm there, 2 more things to change/add ^^

- Show accepted share for the current round, not only our hashrate ^^
- Balance section: Always put bitcoin on top or bottom of the other currency regardless of amount we have compare to the other currency :)

Glad you got your payout :)

I think the issue is probably due to the fixed difficulty of 512. With low hashrates it can take a while to submit a share which increases the percentage of stales.

At the moment we fully intend to switch over to vardiff at the earliest possible time. We've had to focus more on increasing users' earnings this week, but it's on the way. Hopefully this will solve the issue. I'm of the understanding that wafflepool used to be vardiff but switched to 512 a few days ago... you'd probably have the same issues there too now.

In answer to your suggestions:
- You can see accepted / rejected shares for the round in the 'Statistics' box when logged in.
- That's a nice idea to keep the BTC balance at the top - we'll see what we can do.

I'll keep this thread updated with progress, and thanks for the feedback.

Oh my bad, didn't check Statistics  ::)

Hope to get less stale when you add vardiff
On waffle, even with 512, i don't get stale , perhaps it have to do with coin mined too, low dif coin + high miner diff = more stale ^^

We will see how it goes.
Nice work done, really hope this pool will succeed with the work you do :)

Thanks very much! I'll keep an eye on the stales issue in case it can be improved with the current pool setup. The particular coins we're mining may be playing a part, ping time to the server also.

If you check the balances screen you'll see that bitcoin is now at the top regardless of the amount :) The only time it will disappear is if you have a 0 BTC balance.

A couple of standard account features that were requested have now gone live:

- 'Forgotten password' link next to the login form
- 'Account Settings' screen in the top right menu, allowing you to change your password

Anyone who has forgotten their password should now be able to reset it to gain access to their account.

Hey dankroxel,

Thank you very much for giving us your hashes over the last couple of days - it's really appreciated. As we're a brand new pool we've had a few bugs & issues since launch that have been affecting earnings. We've been monitoring and adjusting the system all day to optimise payouts, and we're making progress.

To be honest, after trying just about everything to optimise the pool's earnings, we stumbled across the most unexpected bug earlier. Our prices had stopped syncing with Cryptsy, and so the profitability algorithm was running off of outdated information. What are the odds?! All fixed now so we should see big improvements.

Thanks for sticking around - we will definitely be rewarding miners long term who have helped us out through this launch phase.

Hey, No problem! I'm not giving up on you yet...

Thanks! Today's payouts were in the range of 0.009-0.01 BTC / MH / day so we seem to have caught up with most other pools now.

There's a problem with Cryptsy's API today which is preventing trade data synching to the pool. We are still trading the coins as usual to prevent loss of earnings, but it means that they may not appear as traded in your account until Cryptsy fixes the issue. This is out of our control and is affecting other pools too.

If they are unable to fix the problem today, a proportion of today's earnings may be carried over to tomorrow's payout. We've contacted Cryptsy and will keep users up to date with any progress.

Cryptsy have said that problems should be resolved within 2 hours. If so, balances will be updated in time for today's payout.

Final update on the situation - everything has been fixed at Cryptsy's side so the pool has returned to normal. All balances have now updated.

New to your pool since yesterday - any reason Mincoin is not on the list right now?  Seems more profitable than CNC and we mined it within the last day.

Also why is Grandcoin inactive, we have plenty of hashrate to mine that coin?

Hey, thanks for giving the pool a try.

We've been having real trouble getting the MinCoin wallet to sync to the correct blockchain. It was mined earlier today but on a bad fork, so we disabled it and covered the losses that were incurred from it - we are taking the hit for any issues that are out of the users' control. So in the meantime we're being very careful with MinCoin until it's back on the right chain, but it's high on our priority list to get this coin sorted.

GrandCoin is reporting a problem - will look into it.

Thanks for the feedback - we're still working hard to get the pool as profitable as possible.

GrandCoin is now active again. It was disabled because CoinChoose is currently reporting an incorrect block height, and this is one of our reference points.

Really like what you're doing and I'm going to keep hashing with you for awhile.  I'm recommending you on cryptocointalk.com but a fair question was raised - interested in your answer.

What some people want to know is how we can be mining coins that bring an estimated .06ish per day but the performance number shows something larger than that.  I said that the estimates below are moment to moment and that the number at the top is an avg over 24 hours - but I don't often see the estimates in the coin list performing at a level that should raise our average.

Can you offer some explanation?  Thanks.

Do you have any plan on providing an EU server ?

ALSO, please add "Reddcoin" , "USDe" , "Kittehcoin" , "Florin" , "GlobalCoin" , "Doubloons", "Auroracoin" , "Earthcoin". These coins are in top 3 profitable coins most of the time.

No good mining coins you can't sell half the time because the exchanges are beyond unreliable.

Hey, thanks for recommending us - it’s much appreciated!

It’s hard to say without looking into the specific times with more detail, but there are a couple of likely causes:

- The last few days we’ve seen coins we mine move up and down in profitability quite a bit. The estimated earnings as you said is based on 24 hours so is always trailing behind by many hours.

- The values shown in the coin list are simply based on price and difficulty at the moment. In reality, some coins perform much better and others much worse. Feathercoin for instance seems to generally out-perform our predictions, which bumps up the estimated earnings, but not the value shown in the coin list. Soon we may start to adjust the values in the list based on their past mining performance, which should bring everything a bit more in line.

Hope that makes sense, and cheers again for hashing with us :)

An EU server will be the next location we add, but it won't be possible until we're out of the beta and have grown our total hashrate some more. I'll keep you updated.

Quite a few of those coins are on our upcoming list already - you should start to see new ones appearing each day. Thanks for the suggestions!

To be honest we haven't really been using it as our user base has been small so have been dealing with issues via email and on here.

It should be set up as 'coincatcher' on freenode anyway.

After a couple of weeks of testing, we are pleased to announce that Coin Catcher is now using variable difficulty (VARDIFF).

During our beta, vardiff was our most requested feature by far, as the majority of other multipools are fixed at 512. This should allow for less variance, particularly with less powerful mining hardware.

We've also improved our algo which has brought our average payouts in line with most other pools.

Fees are still 0% for the time being, so give it a go - any feedback is welcomed.

I think this pool is great, but I wish you would stop mining Elacoin. The payments remain unconfirmed for far too long.

Hey, glad you like the pool. We've found that mining CHNCoin and Elacoin generally give us the least amount of variance and so allow for consistent daily earnings. Elacoin's confirmation times aren't ideal, but mining it should give higher payouts when averaged out over a few days. If we're able to grow our hashrate it will give us more options, but right now these coins are the most reliable :)

Apologies about that - there were some server issues earlier today which gave us a few hours of downtime. All is fixed now.

Due to server costs, Coin Catcher will be closing down in the next couple of days. Please point your miners at another pool to avoid any downtime.

Thanks to all our 1000+ users that got onboard since our launch in February - it was a fun project and it's a shame to have to bring it to an end!

Yep, it was a good pool. Unfortunately, GPU scrypt mining is dead.

Maybe you could get investors, up the pool cost to 2%, try something else?

Depending on costs, maybe I could take it over?

Why not allow for other algos?
