Me too! This is the main reason I never used Gox, their stupid verification requirements.. they denied the docs I took the time to scan and submit, so I just went to a different exchange because I didn't want to deal with it.

When I started with Bitcoin 6 months ago, MtGox was the first exchange I signed up on. But they were not receiving wire transfers from my bank and my account also took long to verify, so I moved elsewhere. So luckily I never used MtGox and I thank god for that.

shiet, I'm sorry man.   There could still be a teeny tiny chance that a company comes in and buys Gox and tries to turn it around (and give users their money back).   Completely different market, but it happened when Full Tilt Poker went belly up, kind of in the same fashion that Gox has done.

BTC is new to me, I followed the bitcoin.org where Gox was presented as the most trusted and oldest running, so out of all other  exchanges I chose Gox in November last year, deposited 10K with them... and learnt about the shit with them in Dec/Jan when I found this board, when it was already too late to withdraw either fiat or BTC...heartbroken to say, it was all my savings...lesson learnt...very, very harsh way...

I and all others who fell in this trap can do is hope that, in some kind of divine justice, we will be at least able to get the BTC out of them

Joking aside, it happens, it's no tragedy. It is tragic, though, that so many people seem to have kept such large amounts at risk (regardless of it being Gox). Perhaps a more fitting question is, what percentage of your fortune did you lose at gox. I left 0.5 as a conscious high risk gamble, there again it is a manageable portion of my total.

Yep but also understand that I have had no problem withdrawing euros from them this entire time. Only yesterday I got a letter from my bank informing me of funds arriving from Mt.Gox Poland. Yes I saw the many Gox failures over the last few yeas and I also saw them survive.

Killing Mark is not in the self interest of depositors. There is still a little hope left that someone takes over MtGox and it re-opens with no loss or only partial loss. If Mark is dead, that process can be dragged out considerably. I hope all stakeholders who travelled to Japan have that in mind.

Pulled out at least 4 months prior, left my account there with nothing.  But OUCH if some of those large losses are true, guys.

Around $250 USD with a VERY OLD withdrawal request that was never fulfilled. I forgot it was in there until the recent news. I think the last time I actually deposited anything at Gox was when they used Paypal for cash withdrawals.

That sucks.. I can only imagine how many people are in the same boat as you. I know plenty of people(none that use gox) who manage other peoples crypto accounts (brothers, moms, dads, friends ect).

I assume mtgox had its fair share of people like that too who lost not only their money but the money of friends and family.

What can I do?

I got all my coins ripped off by a guy on here (Timo Willemsen - thanks asshole) I hired to build a website for me.  I forget how many exactly now but it was in the 30-50 BTC range.  NBD, only a few dozen thousand worth of coins :-)

I repeatedly tried to verify my account so I could get my money out and twice they refused my verification documents. Once in December and then again at the end of January.

Other people I know had no trouble verifying their accounts but each of them had no BTC or FIAT in them hence why I think they were verified because the Gox was assuming that a nice fat FIAT deposit would be coming their way. Where as people like me would only be taking FIAT out and not depositing any.

I never deposited any FIAT to MTGox only BTC from mining and trading alt coins.

The only reason I can see that MtGox let people trade after the BTC withdrawals were halted was to trick people into spending FIAT on non existent BTC to reduce their FIAT liability as they were probably under the assumption that people claiming BTC back through the courts was unlikely where as FIAT has the legal backing.

Either way one can only hope that Karpeles will be Gang Goxxxed and left in a ditch.

The only thing I lost from this was reputation as a Bitcoin investor, but I believe the advantages of cryptocurrencies will make up for their current shortcomings, most of which can be solved in the future. The lack of reliable exchanges is a serious problem, but I think the situation is improving in this regard.

You are correct,  it was easy for Gox to manipulate it in any way they want and they surely did.
But it is also worth the deep web economy which it does not make much difference...BTC non faked value is very low.

I bought the BTC less than 24 hours before the trading stopped, using money which I just sent in via OkPay in the same time frame.

I have been registered a and even verified some time ago but I never actually used the service up until that very moment.
They made me wait 30+ days for my account verification and when I finally got verified I just didn't feel I want to use their service anymore (for various reasons I just learned in the meantime, like their anti-offshore fiat withdrawal regulations, combined with their notably long SEPA transfer delays, etc).

But when I felt like it's all over in a few days or even hours, I just couldn't resist to play the "quadruple or lose everything" game. So, I exchanged all of my BTC and sent in the fiat to GOX to buy significantly more BTC than I previously had.

I don't even regret it. Yes, I am a little said, but I was aware what I am doing and I would do this again.
I thought "Gox is too big to fail" but I am a noob in crypto. I didn't even know anything about BTC until the very end of the last year.

It was looking pretty likely in 2013 that these guys were going down.  Thus:

 - Something like 0.001 BTC.
 - Something like $4.00

I did take go ahead and put some of my draw-down in the form of a risk.  Thus:

 - A $5k wire from mid Aug 2013
 - Identity docs - Value to me: ~$10k

The wire is fairly inconsequential.  The value was chosen to be enough to warrant some sort of action if it was a loss but otherwise relatively small compared to my other activities.

The identity docs, on the other hand, hurt!  If Karpeles loses/sells them to criminals he'll be a life-long enemy and I'll happily absorb an expense to see him and gaybauchery suffer.  If he simply hands my documents over to my government (U.S.) that is acceptable since I recognize that he'll have no realistic choice and I expected that he was probably already under that pressure when I sent them (shortly before requesting my wire.)

Seems that Mt. Gox employed people from all over the place to do various support functions.  This is more common than not in today's world.  These people probably had access to the entire collection of documents.  I seems highly unlikely to say the least that Mt. Gox had any sort of access control or monitoring on this data.

I'll bet that Mt. Gox barely even know who the supports staff they hired were, much less did anything like having criminal background checks on them or even really any sort of code of conduct training.  And they are hardly going to be in a situation to track down thefts from here forward.

My biggest mis-estimate here was in thinking that given the problems in the past and given the huge amount of money that Mt. Gox had been raking in, that they would be reasonably up-to-speed in data security functions by now.  Oops.


I assume they do since they certainly expend some effort to rip them off via hacks.  And also identity theft is very common and presumably reasonable lucrative.  I asked on this board once if there were anyone who knew that answer to that question but nobody piped up.  I never had a Silk Road account and don't frequent the criminal IRC channels or whatever, so I didn't have a very good way to get the answer for myself.  Would be interesting to know however.
