Title: Have you ever been hacked on a crypto trading platform? (share your experience)
Post by: juwon55 on September 23, 2018, 08:10:50 PM
Just yesterday my brother’s email was hacked for a period of 24 hours, during this period the hacker has already had access to all his trading accounts and transferred all his crypto assets worth over $5,000.

It was quite tragic, because the funds were not totally his, and it difficult to explain this scenario to his investors. From what i figured it was easy for the hacker to get away with such funds.

To avoid this kind of unfortunate incident, i implore crypto traders to make sure that there’s no loop holes in there trading accounts. I personally, trade on a hybrid trading platform (www.bbod.io (http://www.bbod.io)) that runs a non-custodial smart contract wallet system where all account balances are held by a decentralized smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain. Centralized entities are too often hacked, our hybrid approach to decentralized safety combined with a centralized trading engine ensures the security of your funds whilst maintaining blazing fast transactions speeds.

Even if someone is using myetherwallet or a similar decentralized exchange they can still accidentally give their keys to hackers, just recently the DNS server of myetherwallet was hacked and people transfering ETH or tokens that put in their private keys to access their wallet were compromised.

For the best security use 2FA

Don't use priv keys anymore, use metamask or a hardware wallet to connect to myetherwallet

Use one email address for crypto exchanges, not a universal email for everything.

Dont post on social media with your real name and information about your crypto stuff

Bookmark sites so you dont get phised

Sorry about your friends loss, hope he can get passed it. good luck

I was hacked but that's a while ago, the hacker managed to get my emails address and sent me a fake link, I didn't take time to look through the link, i went on to login and gave away my password, they gain access to my account, made away with little money on the account, since then, i have set up 2FA on all account so such thing won't happen again even though they manage to get my password and I will encourage everyone to always set their 2FA to be more secured.

It's true that I really agree with the suggestions that you have given, especially at this point.
Dont post on social media with your real name and information about your crypto stuff
Because in my opinion it will be very inviting hackers to find out who you are and start looking for information about your wallet then steal it, other than that for me there is no point in posting asset values on social media so you should never do that.

OP is a somewhat well disguised shill for this bbod .io site..
If you look at his posts, half of them are to mention it in some way..

Often newbies posting links like this are an attempt to scam or hack but this bbod may be legit?
If anything it is an advertisement..

Yes I have has the emails rain in warning me of attempts to access some of my accounts I think because they got my email address in the Bitcointalk hack and then tried getting into exchanges with it..  It seems they waisted a lot of effort trying to get into a c-cex account of mine that I never used anyway, lol..

I'm not using that email for exchanges anymore..

I have a ton of exchange accounts, all empty until I decide to use them, if ever..
Whenever I fund an exchange account of mine I change the password to a new unique strong password and use 2FA sometimes when I plan to leave funds there for a long time or play with a larger amount of funds..

I was once hacked and learned a few lessons:
 - keep all passwords written down on paper;
 - use 2FA;
 - never insert private keys.

I recommend using MetaMask or hardware wallets.

I never faced any hack experience in my knowledge because when I go to use for trading I always add 2FA security and even for my LBC account I have 2FA and the IP access for login,in that case if user can hack your wallet but they can't be able to access because they need 2FA code for the access. And more over I never had cryptos much longer in trading experience this is what everyone needs to do if they want to stay away from hacks.

I have no problem with hackers. Metamask in DEX trading floors such as IDEX, DDEX or Bancor :) If the trading floor is as large as Binance or Huobipro, Okek. I think do not forget to set up 2FA, SMS, password fund (if any). The deposit / Withdraw e should be set to maximum protection.

That's really sad to hear... I feel sorry for your loss. Though I have never been hacked, but I can imagine how difficult it is to be in your shoes. I wouldn't even wish such loss to my worst enemy. Actually, there are almost no places, which don't have loop holes and totally immune to hacks. But we can reduce the risks of being hacked to minimum by choosing the exchange with solid safety measures. Maybe you should consider cex (https://cex.io/), as this platform is known by its high level of security. And it’s better to avoid keeping all your funds online, try to use a hardware wallet.

In such cases, you need to protect yourself. First of all, you need to configure two-factor authentication on your mail and on all services that you use for trading. And in any case, never click on suspicious links. If you follow these steps you will never be hacked

A lot of people have really taken the importance and essence of using 2FA to secure their accounts with levity and this is the reason why you will keep seeing people losing their funds.

At some point, I am sure the Op's brother must have even gullibly been a victim of a phishing attack or some malware attack beforehand and all these things is what makes one account to end up becoming vulnerable and even in such cases of unforeseen incidence, added security layout to the account will always make you a step ahead and at least, subdue any damage being done to your account.

$5000 is a whole lot to lose, and for the fact that you have mentioned it is not even something he could have afforded to lose, even made it worse.

There are some people that get hacked through no fault of their own but the majority of victims do something stupid.  They will do things like using the same password for multiple sites, not using 2FA, or giving out personal information to random strangers on the internet.

Its an advertisement no doubt and its quiet obvious giving out some scenarios or hacking events of his friends and tagging out the site on the last.Well it isn't bad but I don't see hacking instances would be completely wiped out on new exchange even if it uses newer features. The safety of ones account either on old exchange or new will always vary or depend on users responsibility on keeping important information.

Using same passwords with emails, usernames to different websites isn't really a recommended thing. They just have to learn that they need to change this habit.

I have never been hacked and hopefully it will be continuous. When I use to check my email everyday, I see a lot of spams including those scammers and phishers that are copying an exchange and an online wallet. Gladly that when I was new, people have been giving warnings about it so just don't click any link from those emails. OP's side marketing though.  :)

The exchange itself had been hacked and all its coins had been lost. Although the exchange later restored the coin, it was a gruesome experience.

To be honest, this has never happened with me as i take security of my sensitive data seriously.
Many such cases have come to discussion before and will keep happen unless you take care of your credentials seriously.
No matter how secure your email id is, you should always activate 2FA in your wallet

I can bet he is not using the additional security features such as 2FA which is why it was very easy for the hacker to get in, otherwise that would not have been possible.

At this day and age, I expect that by now, people should have learned the importance of using a very strong password to their accounts that cannot easily be brute forced, and then making use of the securities applicable to them which will make it very hard for any hacker to get in and hackers usually do not always like hard time with something, as long as it does not look feasible, they move on to the next target.

This is a terrible occurrence and it's a shame that things like this keep happening but we must accept that this is the reality of this market and we must take precautions, if your brother was the only one that was hacked then it is pointless to try to make it seem as if the exchange has something to do with it, it was your brother responsibility to secure his coins to the best of his ability because some of the money on that account was not even his.

2FA is always been suggested to have be activated but people do keep neglecting until they do experience loss of coin and that's the time they do set out 2FA. People wont learn if they wont experience loss for some cases but there are still people who wont really let these things to happen in them.Even I, after all these years I haven't experience on getting hacked with exchangers or trading platforms.

That is the way many people think, they do not see the dangers and they do not take the right precautions because they feel that is never going to happen to them, and then when it does they lament the fact that they did not took as many precautions but by that time it is already too late, so as a bitcoin holder your first priority should be to protect your coins no matter what.

I never been hacker on trading platform. Sometimes the exchange was hacked or had some problems but i not lost funds on trading platform. I use new password on every site i use and i use 2fa where is possible. Some users possible get hacked if they have a virus (spyware, keylogger) on their PC and they don't know that PC is virused. Not all viruses are detected by an antivirus (kaspersky for example can't detect all new version of viruses). Stay secure, and don't download any file you get on email, or from different sites. If file is small scan it on virus total before open it.

Thanks for sharing! This is why in every trading platform that we use it has been advisable to use 2FA all of the time. I was also advised before of activating my 2FA so I can be safe from any hacks.

Just like today that there's a massive sell off for the emails and other data's somewhere on dark web, you really can't tell if your emails and accounts are safe. Having a 2FA this will give us tighter security and at least give hackers an headache to stop robbing our funds.

This kind of events are not really that rare and we have seen many examples of this in the past, that is why if the trading platform that you are using allows you to use two factor authentication then you need to use it, because your coins are too valuable and any mistake that you make could cost you your life savings and if you have a lot of money that kind of loss is going to be very traumatic and you don't want to go through that.

It's a fact that this isn't rare anymore and most of the newbies are worried with their coins and isn't aware that this is really happening. But as long as they will learn from the experience of others and by listening to the advises that were given, they will never experience this.

I found it that 2FA is one of the best 2nd layer security and as much as possible include email auth as well for dual security.

In addition to 2FA security with email, we should also regularly change email passwords and set a long password and have hard to remember characters. The ability to remember passwords is easily compromised.

It is just that some people are usually always careless and they tend not to pay attention to the security of their account most of the time. The thing here is to always at least make sure you have your account pretty well secured.

Also, it is not really a full guarantee that some bullshit may not happen which is why it is also advisable to put what you can afford to see let go without it affecting your pocket hugely on an exchange, so that at least you are covered in some way by using those securities and knowing that however things turn out even if the fault tend to be from the exchange, there would really be no cause for alarm. One of the reasons I am making use of 3 different exchanges anyway.

Yes thanks for adding that, setting your passwords and changing it regularly like weekly or monthly should be a practice and you can also check if your email was leaked through https://haveibeenpwned.com/

I used to remember my passwords but now that I grown up and is being aware of the life through internet, we should be aware and careful with every information and emails that we have. I also advise remain from using browsers "remember username/password" feature.

Even if an exchange gets hacked or experiences a DDOS attack, the chances of getting affected if you have extra security enabled like email login and 2FA most especially as that would make it a bit difficult for hackers to get into your account, but nothing is impossible anyway if there are some loopholes in some systems which could actually make all accounts vulnerable as the case may be. I have never been hacked though, but I have always made sure that I am making use of these additional securities and even at that, I am not trading more than I can afford to lose at the moment, and that is what actually gives me some confidence

Sorry about your friends loss, hope he can get passed it. good luck
I agree with your suggestion but unfortunately that there are some people who are negligent, and finally blame others. About 2 months ago one of my accounts on the trading platform was tried to hack by sending "forgotten password and requesting a password reset" the account was installed in 2fa, and I got 2x email about the unnatural login attempt. Besides that, the e-mail that I used for many years has been tried on someone's hack but failed because I installed security for different IP addresses, it won't be able to log in easily.
The point is before that happens we have to protect ourselves by learning from other people's experiences, unfortunately there are many who underestimate it and finally happen to them

In addition to 2FA security with email, we should also regularly change email passwords and set a long password and have hard to remember characters. The ability to remember passwords is easily compromised.
Another good suggestion is to use a password manager, it is very difficult to come up with passwords that are very difficult to break for a hacker and that are easy to remember, so it is better to use a password manager that can create a password so long and complex that is going to be impossible for any hacker to break it and if you change them regularly then the protection of that password is even stronger.

My account is also hacked, I see the login process is not from me. fortunately, assets are still safe, when I get email notifications to enter, I immediately enter and install 2FA. And until now it's still safe, in my opinion, 2FA is very important !!!

Prior to being hacked,  yes my account in poloniex was hacked but it was my mistake since I did not use their security option of having 2fa.  With regards to OP's brother, since he is gathering fund from other people, he should have added more security to his trading account.  Gmail can be hacked but if your account in trading platform have 2fa, it is harder for the hacker to access your account in different exchanges.  There is also this text confirmation code where we can activate if we are not confident with 2fa.
I hope OP's brother has learned his lesson in that incident.

With the advent of cryptocurrency, the hackers have a new line of earnings. Many people want to have digital assets, but they neglect their cyber security. In today's world, people are accustomed to hoping for the cyber security of banking structures that are responsible for the safety of their money, but people do not understand that they themselves are responsible for digital assets.

I am happy that I have never been a victim of hackers. Maybe they are not interested in my shitcoins))) In any case, I always adhere to the terms of use and protection against fishing, etc.

I am glad to say that I did not part of exchange hacking nor losimg of money there. Maybe it is my luck but I never became a careless when it comes to the safetiness of my asset. I want to secure all coins I have and trusting in an exchange is a big NO for me. I hope I would not lose even a small amount eventhough I know that there are many hackers in this industry.
