Title: How to protect yourself and others from scammers?
Post by: Perie200 on September 30, 2018, 04:35:57 AM
Hello everybody .
Tell us, how do you recognize the scammers? I've met a lot of fraudulent projects and I can say that I learned by bitter experience, but every day it's more difficult to distinguish a good project from scammers. We do not want to lose our money and do not waste time in the empty, participating in the companies bounty.

Honestly, there are no fool-proof ways to really determine and get away from the scammers' trap all because these people are always thinking ahead and they are adopting fast to many new developments. Aside from the fact that if we can find fake profile in the published team members which can be the big red flag, it is now getting so hard to determine which of the project we are promoting and supporting will; eventually turn out to be just another scam. And aside from scams, there are also many projects under well-intention people that will eventually fail due to lack of interest from the market or the team behind are not fully equipped to handle the project but there are also cases when out of luck is just coming in. I am not wondering why if there is now a growing lack of interest from the people who used to "invest" money in many ICO projects before. Unlike stocks, there is no dividends or share of the profits we can expect from ICO companies because otherwise they can be endanger of selling securities.

Some projects are easily to detect it is a scam because they make many mistakes in their information of project. But some projects are almost perfect and transparent information, even they lists their coin/token on exchange, but still become a scam project.

So, just invest in which tokens/coins are well-known and on top of coinmarketcap. If you are only a bounty hunter, you can research more before joining their campaign. More research will make you waste less time on scam projects.

Recently, a lot of very campaigns was a Scam and it's no secret that there are still such things that scammers do not sleep! When I choose a campaign for myself, I very well study their website, campaign participants, looking for information about this campaign on the network, but often it is so hidden that you learn that this Scam in the campaign. Now begin to create projects that will be engaged in the search for the bench and talk about it to traders!

I agree with you that scam projects have become very much and very difficult to distinguish from a good project. I personally choose very carefully, and every project carefully check and look at every small detail, because a good project will never make mistakes and will do everything perfectly. And scam projects are sometimes easy to detect (they copy something, there is no roadmap, and so on).

I too many times got into projects of swindlers, and now I try to participate only in those who collect at least something. And to find out on 100% of the swindler I think it is impossible especially at the very beginning

I am sure there have been a plethora of identical or at least similar questions than this one before, so sometimes its useful to reach for a search button. But yes, you cant never be completely certain about the project and its legitimacy, just try to do as much research as you are able to do and combine the findings with findings of other potential investors. If there are major red flags, avoid the project at all costs.

If you want to invest in cryptocurrency, risk and profit coexist. Don't complain. More careful investigation of the project can reduce the risk of being cheated.

There is no universal solution, but you should pay attention to the summits and conferences that team is going to visit. There is a full list of fake blockchain events somewhere in the web, and if your potential investment team visit it, you may be sure that they are fake.

The best method to protect yourself against from scammers is to increase your knowledge about this technology and never invest or suggest if your not sure about the project and the team. You can research on the web and follow their project promotions and exposure as those legit projects will join and participate in a ICOs events. Don't in hurry to invest, they can wait if they are legit and don't take seriously on big bonus in the early stage.

The key to identifying most scams is in the information about the people behind the project. Most scammers fear being caught so they invent fake personas for all the people alleged to be part of the project. I have seen them get pretty sophisticated in their attempts to create fake profiles. I check LinkedIn profiles and look for signs that the profile has been manufactured.

To protect yourself from scammers, you need at least a little to understand the topic of cryptocurrency and see the pitfalls. No one will give a 100% guarantee.

I think that it would be extremely easy for the whole community to define scammer if every team member of every project would have to pass KYC procedure. Today there are cases, when idenity of CEO is used without his permission and KYC will help to find it.

You have to check every team member to become sure about reliability of the project. Fake linkedin pages are easy to check. In the same time, you need to ask team member about his participation. Once upon a tme, I wrote CEO of the ICO and he did not know a thing about his participation.

Scammers are very distinguishable and lets not forget that crypto currencies are almost 90% fraud than the legit one so you can spot the difference very easily. you dont really have to look for the scams but mostly the legit one so that you can get idea of it. Well, nonetheless I would really see a scammers as they are posing very very frank and legit about their projects and might be overacting about the whole scene. A legit project never approaches you first, what approaches you is the scammers. Because they are always desperate for the easy money and thus they will make mistakes of approaching first, asking nicely for the keys, files and personal info etc.

So I find out that the people ae real and they promote their project and work on a it. Besides I examine the document of the project to be sure that it's not a scam

it is not so hard to stay safe. you should ignore what people say, and make your own search. you should be careful about especially teams. you should search about each team member and their past. if you can get enough clear information about them, you can decide to invest or not to invest.

Before I joined a campaign, the first thing I did was find out about projects in searches like ICOholder and Icobench. Read more about white paper information, site statistics, teams in the project.
see how many participants joined the campaign.

I would not say is more difficult. There are quite a few tools that will allow you to validate the team and from that it is up to your own knowledge to understand if that is a team than can make the project a reality.

As a bounty hunter, you can choose a fairly simple way. It is necessary to study those managers who will never consciously support fraudulent projects. For example, Amazix (bounties.biz) and btcltcdigger (t.me/CSBounty) explicitly state that they do not cooperate with scammers.
There are also resources that have chosen only high-quality projects for investing. Unfortunately, since spring I have not followed this, and I will not give an example.

if you are not smart to research it, maybe you can only participate in gifts that are managed by managers who have a good and trusted reputation. so you don't waste time researching, but all that remains at risk, whether a scam or failing to reach the target.

Check out the scam accusation section of this forum, there are threads there which ICO teams are caught with fake team members. The profiles they created are all fake and those who accused them knew how to identify the fake ones.

Take a look at these threads:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5041112.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4996259.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5041209.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5040598.0

There are more of these threads, you'll see how the OP saw them by just uploading the photos of a team member on google. Once you knew how to identify, you can then protect yourself and others.

There is no way to determine a scammers but there are ways on how you can avoid I will list some that can help you to avoid it.

1. Check the cpin allocation for the campaign and it started already check how much did they reached already it is very important that you know and check so that you will determine if they will reached the amount goal if they will not reached they only pay with small amount, but if they reached they will pay you big amount.
2. Read their whitepaper. You need to read their white paper to know what is their goal in doin the project.
3. Check their website. To know all the information about tbe project.
4. Check their rating so you will also see the review about them also what they can do.
5. Check the members. Check their member so you know if the bounty manager has done a project already and to know if they have a good members.
6. Lastly check their timeline to know if they are doing their project accordingly to their written timeline.

This is how I check some ICOs.

And if you want to invest in some altcoin check first the review on the altcoin so that you will know if the price is good when it pumps.

It is very difficult to see cheaters especially now, when so much of ICO, I myself have many times got them and I paid nothing, and the ICO lost their money. It is necessary as often as possible to detect fraud and tell everyone about them, then it will be harder to create new fraud project.

What I do is that I look for team at first. I try to look into their profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to know about the authenticity of the team. There is a probable chance that you might find something fishy. Always look for all the team members.

Second look for the partners and the media mentions. I usually go with one which has a few media mentions plus some recognized partners.

Then take help from rating websites. Look for 3-4 ratings and then plan accordingly.

Spending time to research further about the project also can minimize us on possible scam project. That's the reason now that many investors afraid to invest due to many cases of scam from different emerging ICO's every day. So, to make a long story short it depends on your hand and decision to have a good investment in ICO not to fall in the scam project.

Honestly that is not too hard in my opinion. You can chech team investors and whitepaper firstly. and if you have a experience about icos you can realise these scam ones easly. maybe the more good answer is you need to search about good icos websites. and after some time you can automatically realise the scam websites. they are smelling like a scam..

avoid scammers certainly should be more clever than the fraudster. When he provides false then the project must know the indication that the project is indeed a scam. When the find project scam is certainly at least learn what makes this into a scam and will definitely be learned from several factors. by learning from experience I think would be more able to see the results.

And that's also why you should first do your research before getting into things.

Well, I think there are many posts about discussion as you ask. in essence you have to look for a lot of knowledge and especially the desire to read a lot from various references to increase your insight in terms of investment or ico. this is important, because experience plays an important role in making knowledge, especially about technical analysis

Although I am not a skilled bounty hunter, I am very willing to share my method for you! I hope to help you!
1. Read the white paper (I think this is the most important step)
2. When you think the project is good, you should try to join their group (telegraph, Twitter, Facebook or other social groups) because you can get more knowledge about the project through language exchange!

I disagree with you. SCAM is not impossible to understand the project and people. First of all we can not believe in every opportunity. Sometimes promises don't match reality. The SCAM problem can hurt all of us, but we need to read, investigate and query. If we do, the risk will decrease.

I think experience plays an important role in all matters related to crypto, so this is difficult because in every search there is always a risk that we will face, especially in the ICO project. bounty or investment there is no difference. the point is always to try to learn first and try to analyze it

I protect my self not to believe in projects that give you much more profit if you invest with them and don't click any referral link that given to you by unknown person don't to rush or excited to what you see because it can be a threat to your money's security when you're not careful.

I think we should be more cautious when we are selecting any cryptocurrency project, we should carry out a due diligent search to ascertain the validity of the project through reading the project whitepaper and other related documentation. We should be very careful not to lose our money.

the most important thing is to be careful yourself, because often the holders themselves give their assets foolishly. A separate device to work ONLY with crypto, a separate e - mail, antivirus, VPN, password generators-this should be enough))

We also suffer. There is no one way to learn scam project or real. There is faith in the bounty manager. And analysis of the very idea of the project. Everything else is 50/50 like in a casino.

Now scammers have become more inventive.I believe that the ICO market has not outlived its usefulness. If the team is aimed at a good result,it should follow a few simple principles:
1) Real profiles of team members on the site,with links to profiles in social networks. Moreover, these people should be active and regularly update the information in the profile (photos,videos);
2) Regular maintenance and updating of information about the company on social networks(Reddit,Facebook,Twitter);

check, recheck and then - check again.

Your are putting your hard earned money in the hands of someone you've never met, so the cardinal rule is to check every bit of information and make sure it is accurate - check the website data, cross reference team member information with social media sites, investigate every key team member to the best of your abilities.

Once you've verified the validity of the project and its members move to step 2 - investigate the market that project is in...is it ripe for success or filled with competitors?

And my own personal bit of crazy - if the project demands a minimum contribution amount that seems rather high - stay out, as they would normally only take that step if they want to insure "seriousness" of investors, while the project may be valid, i am adverse to comply with high demands - a reliable project ought to let me decide how much I want to invest in it, they should welcome all members of all sizes not seek to create an exclusive club.

I look at the team and especially at founders. Everyone today has a social network profile, and if we see in whitepapper that founder was working with some project for a long time but we could not find enough information about that project in social media, that means that either this founder has a small experience in advertising his project or this project even did not exist. So I try to avoid projects like this.

Nowadays it is difficult to protect you from a scam, as whitepaper & roadmap are well prepared that everyone can get trapped. To protect yourself Check statistics given by sites like ICO Bench, ICO marks, Track ICO. We had to check their telegram group if they are responding to the questions raised. Scammers always reach you first & ask you for private keys by trapping you saying want to transfer good amount of coins to you & steal your wallet.

Even with heavy research you can end up getting burned by a scammer.   I've seen a lot of ICO scams endorsed by notable crypto figures and celebrities that turn out to be completely fraudulent.

A lot of notable exchanges that had good reputations ended up getting hacked which is almost always a code word for an inside job.

You can do all you want but there are times when everyone falls for a scam.

I can tell you many times people in bitcoin community lost money to some sort of scam, thankfully there haven't been many since last year but history of bitcoin has been written with scammers.

People has lost money on mt.gox deal, incredible amounts as well, they lost money on hashflare stuff and they are now dealing with courts and laws and so forth, people lost money on the biggest currency exchange of the time cryptsy as well when it closed.

Hell even places like coinbase that currently runs has canceled peoples accounts for "security reasons" and not gave them back.

It is a digital age, and you have to always pay attention to details, scrutinize the website you want to visit, and when you see something that is not right, do not hesitate to quickly protect yourself first. I would say anyone who really does not want to get scammed will always have that protection instinct.

First of all, we need to carefully look at the project website, read the white paper and study the team. Sometimes the project may set itself impossible goals or there may be obvious mistakes in the design of the site or white paper. Or if the project team is hidden. All these phenomena should make you think about the honesty of the project.

One of the major ways of escaping fraudsters is educating yourself on the crypto space. When you have solid knowledge of what goes and what doesn't go here, it will be hard to fall prey to scam projects seeking to defraud you. As for participating in scam bounties, that's a little bit harder to detect except they are offering exorbitant sums.

Being cautious is actually the better word because most of the time scammers will disguise in so many different ways that you would really ask yourself how someone could sit down to think of something like that when they could have ended up using their brain for something more productive.

Protecting yourself from scam is by trying as much as possible to stay clear those who are scammers and to do that, you have to keep yourself secured, know where you want to be investing, be watchful the websites you are visiting or what you are downloading and every other precautionary security measures.

From the very start they look like an angel project that's very well cooperative and likely won't scam people. But as the project commence and more investors are putting money on it, you'll see their true nature.

Some accusations can be found from those projects here in forum and you just need to navigate to that section from time to time.

It is difficult to defend against crypto fraudsters. They often do not want to cheat at the beginning of the project, work honestly. However, during the implementation of the project there are difficulties that lead to the path of fraud. There is always a risk, but there is also an opportunity to earn a lot. Therefore, you have to take risks if you want to make money fast.

I think you have to be more careful. Don't give your account to someone you don't trust. make a little complicated password. always open your account and check if there is something different.
Why should you even be giving your account to anyone in the first place? Anyone who needs an account should open one as it is a free world and a digital age. As long as you have an account, just try as much as possible to keep it secured, do not expose your credentials unnecessarily focus on making use of all the additional security features to the account and obviously, trust no one but yourself. This is the only best way you can get yourself secured when it comes to scammers, or getting your assets scooped.

There is actually nothing hard in being able to do things yourself when it comes to being able to identify scam but the thing with a whole bunch of people is that the laziness to do research is the main reason why they always try to look for a shortcut or just take some unnecessary risks at the end of the day.

Few things I consider before investing in a new project:

1. What they are promising is it really achievable or is it too good to be true.
2. Authenticity and Credibility of people behind it. Are there real names with real people with real address.
3. Partnerships, are they genuine, did the partners themselves made a written communication about the partnerships

If I cannot find even 1 of the above answers, I stay away from that project.

Spend more time choosing projects. It is not one or a few days. You need to track the transparency of the project and do the research, team test, WP, update evaluation at ANN, OP. These should be practiced regularly.

Exactly! Actually one thing about investment is to always trust only in yourself and your judgment and always see everything in the light of it being a scam until proven otherwise. How to now prove that is left for each individual on how they really intend to go about trying to analyze the team, the product, the business solutions, and so on.

A lot of people actually do not always know what to look out for to be able to know whether to be investing in a project or not, and that is the reason why they fall so easily for any scam. Ask questions, dig deeper, be certain and well convinced before even making any attempt to invest and if you find some things questionable, then, do not even take the risk.

it is difficult to distinguish, it happens that the project has already collected everything and has been realized, and for some time created the appearance of activity and burst at one moment, for example Centro.
To reduce the risk, you should carefully study the project team, its goals and objectives (their reality). Well, if there are prototypes of the project or development, something has already been implemented

Recently, a lot of slag projects. Recently, I ran into one, worked for 2 months, and then the project simply thanked the participants for their work and said that it no longer needs our services, since it became self-sufficient. I know one thing for sure; I will no longer register as part of our internal project.

It is not easy to distinguish which ones are scammers out of all of the coins, you just make sure that you are looking at all of the right information when it comes to the coin that you are looking to invest in. Look into the creators, make sure that they are the ones working on the coin, look into the product, this will give you a good idea of if the coin will last long or not.

It's really hard to protect yourself from it and catch a scammer before he scammed you. Even now they reading our posts and depending on them upgrades their methods of scamming.

It is good to have a checklist  when searching for a good investment and not to be scammed.
Like looking at the team experience, technical part of the project, social part etc. I always check the GitHub activities as well.

You need to invest the solutions that are going to deal with current ICO issues. Appearence of such projects could help to improve the situation with trust, so ICO market will become great again. And when it is great, the entire cryptocurrency market is growing.

The best way to make yourself protected is probably project analysis, a serious fundamental analysis of projects in which you want to invest, it seems to me that this will be very profitable. Therefore, I think that today it is best not to hurry.

I do not know what will be drawn from being the victims of scam failure, naturally, the final product will be drawn, I do not accept it with a random person who is unknown to the enterprise as its grant and ico project so far.

Actually if you are ico investor and if you have a time to spend for it . after some time you started to feel when you entering scam website.
From their team picture from their telegram channel. from their website design and whitepaper. I think the most important thing is the whitepaper and their team while doing
research about ico.

Trust nobody which has not affiliation with the authorities especially if you are into ico projects and investments. There are people who will ask for private informations which usually resulting to scam if the person would not be awared of the risk which may happened for giving the informations being asked. So in order to avoid being a victim, be observant and careful with the tactions to make. And always make asking a habit.

Do your own research if you want to stay away from scammers because there is no easy way to find the scam projects other than by researching about them.If you want to invest on ICO then just check the reputation of the project team and the whitepaper and website design or if you are very new here then just explore around the scam accusation of this form then if your project is scam you can find a thread about it there.

Scammers are very rampant right now in telegram, they will send you a private message and asking you to invest in project. To protect yourself and guard your investment , ask the main telegram group . Visit the website and don't just send  your btc/eth to any person.

Those projects are not even worth to read so don't make any effort to invest onat kind of project and also we can restrict newbies to send personal message to us in the settings so it may save out lot of time from those scammers if anyone don't know this just take that tick from allow newbies to send PMs in the personal message option.

Scamers will never communicate with huge amount of people. For example, when I see that project's team creates different events and participates them I could be sure that team is real and they really want their project to get funding.

just it alone is not enough to do. When the scammer has a thousand ways to cheat, then at least we should have a thousand and one ways to avoid it. does that mean we necessarily should be required to have a broader knowledge in crypto in order not easily get caught in a scam that indeed many there are in this field.

I personally don't really know how to make 100% sure about scammer project, all i can do is preventing myself to get bumped into any scam project, by checking any related information about a project as detailed as possible always making sure about the validity of the data we got.

Ordinary investors should not participate in ICO project investment. When someone gives you advice, you must calmly analyze and not blindly invest. Many people use cryptocurrencies to make money.

Yeah, it's not an easy thing to detect a scam. What we can do is just research the project as good as we can. If we have researched it and we still get trapped in a scam, then we can do nothing else. Just be very careful in choosing the project.

To be honest, we have the opportunity to protect both ourselves and the investors around us by doing research. Especially nowadays there are many people and scam projects that give them the idea of investor and show interest for each project. It has become quite difficult and confuses the users' minds. For this reason, we have to do research first and then make investment decision.

the problem is to find the new coin that can do a big % of price grow...we must look for coins that are not ico or bounty but people are too stupid for this....I regret I did not get bought coins like litecoin, vertcoin or viacoin when they were very very low in 2015...there is a good dose of luck of course, but you must always do your own researches...for example watch Elicoin in livecoinwatch , is not an ICO or bounty... it's a coin with low mc, low supply, PoW whit cpu, no premine, active dev...only trading it on CREX24 for now...do you own researches in the thread in bitcointalk: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3028302.0... people are too stupid for DYOR and got scammed by ICO or bounty...just my 2 cents...hope it helps...cheers

There is no way to check scam projects as no one knows about any project in a start that this project goes which way. It can be judged only after some time after some investigations only.

If there are preventive measures, there are not too many investors cheated from the current ICO. Unfortunately, there is no way to be effective, it all depends on the experience of each person. However, if you don't have experience, it is best not to join the ICO

Am also much concern about the scam projects that we do see or have in cryptocurrency these days, but I think regulation is the main thing that we need to make cryptocurrency more secure and scam free, but every participants are afraid of what government could do to stop blockchain working as the crypto is decentralized and if get regulate it might cause the blockchain and cryptocurrency a huge damage to crypto ecosystem.

The best way for us to do this is to make sure that we are always looking out for one another, whenever we come across a coin that is a scam or any kind of scam then we should be ready to report them and create awareness on them to make sure that people are being warned about the scams, that way less and less people will fall for the scams

My method of protection against fraudsters is simple.  I participate only in those ICO projects that do not cause me a single question in the process of its implementation, in the team of this project and also in the roadmap of the project.  It is difficult to restrain myself from investing in some projects, but the result is that I have never been caught in the tricks of fraudsters before this time.
