Title: A good way to avoid scam ICO projects
Post by: bysmf2000 on October 11, 2018, 03:51:53 PM
The ICO project is currently far more than income for a moment. Try to make the most profit possible, until the ICO deadline is over, and then make a big sale. ICO projects are indeed potentially high enough to be used for fraud, fraud which is detrimental to investors.
Especially if previously the ICO project did not require any legality.
Before investing in an ICO project must pay attention to several factors:

1. Must know detail Concept of the ICO project
A good ICO project must have a good concept.

2. See market segmentation
How much market potential is related to project segmentation and of course must have new innovations

3. Long-term orientation
One thing that can make it easier for you to judge, is to look at the real objects offered from the project

4. Team
Who are the people who work behind the project

Is there another way to avoid scam ICO projects, your input is highly expected

Thank You

That's a great point, i also evaluate projects by noticing the reputation of the project: Are there full names and faces associated to the project, Do they have active LinkedIn or other social media profiles?

The activity of the project also, If the project has been abandoned, then it isn’t worth your time and money. Move on and Dont be tempted to fall for scam.

Then lastly blockchain technology, Not everything needs the blockchain.

In addition to seeing the concept, we also have to see products from IO because I think products are very important in achieving IOO's success, if there are real products, many investors will support

These are all valid point, But once it will not reach softcap surely they do not listed in market so automatically move to scam project. The recent market was really unstable so no one is predict the right ICO in current situation but we should stay away in ICO participation in this year, all the scam projects are died so potential projects are visible in the market.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the technical documents of the project, perhaps they will be fully or partially copied from other projects as scammers often do.

I agree, for now it is better to avoid investing in ICOs due to unstable market conditions. Thank you for your input

The best way to know and avoid scam projects is simply going through research. Check the website, white paper, team members, road map. most of all try to know what the concept of the project is all about.

Other than the real objects or objective of the Project, Market Segmentation, Management team and lots more, you must definitely also be oblivious to highly determine the Qualitative community behind the project is my submission.

My suggestion would also be to check out team background and experience on LinkedIn. If everything looks like it should be, then maybe google them up and see if they are present on even more social channels (mostly scammers won't deal with setting up more than 1 social channel for fake person). If they are, that is a good indicator of their authenticity. Also, check out (or ask on official channels) partnerships they claim to have. Many times it turns out that their partners don't know what are you talking about so that is a big red flag.

The fact is that there are certain resources that are involved in verifying the authenticity of the ico company and then put up a rating. But lately, these resources are very difficult to trust, although if you carry out this work yourself, then you need to spend a lot of time analyzing all the information and the request.

whitepaper is by far the most important determinant of the seriousness of a project. It must be comprehensive, thorough, and explain the technology from the source of the coin. Other assets can include videos, blog posts and other contributions from the team. and don't forget to check the project community, the community is an important indicator of cryptocurrency investment. Crypto currencies have communities collected online on websites such as Reddit and Bitcoin.org , Github is a good source too, and those who can read the code can see at a glance how well the program is programmed.

In order to avoid getting scammed, you have to do A LOT of research.
What can you do to avoid getting scammed by ICOs and other fake online investments?
Avoid them..

In terms of investing, you really want invest with reputable people, businesses, and brokers (online or off) with a highly ethical reputation. And even then you need to be skeptical and ask hard questions.

This day in age, the internet should help with this verification overall. But the key is still understanding who you are doing business with.

Even real life people can rip you off (), but it’s easier to get ripped off if you don’t even know who they are.

Regarding ICOs, although many people can and have made money in crypto & ICOs, they are not (typically) investments. They are speculations.

This is because you are not investing in the equity of a start up. The value of a company’s coin may go up (based on supply and demand), but (typically) it is not backed by real cash flow that drives the value of true investments. I’d make the same arguement for fx and other assets such as art.

If you want to speculate with a small percentage of your money, that’s up to you, but understand the risks.

Start ups have high level of risks, but ICOs combine all of these risks:

start ups (often pre product)
crypto (highly volatile & ungregulated)
100% online funding (harder to verify legitimacy & perform due diligence)
speculation with a “get rich quick” craze
That said, I do believe crypto technology will transform the world in someway. Just don’t get too caught up in the get rich quick craze by putting too much of your money into this market. Also don’t put too much in any one deal.

If you want to participate do a lot of  and diversify.

It is just to hard ro avoid scam ICO nowadays just because there are so many ICO event at this moment. Maybe we need some kind like 3rd partner ICO management or something to protect us from scam.

These are obvious facts. But even they do not guarantee safety. The project may initially focus on positive results, but for certain reasons, turn into a scam. And in advance it does not foresee.
But just don't forget that the scammers are not stupid. Even if there is at least one unwary for a dozen cautious. They also learn from mistakes and each time improve their schemes.

Most bounty hunters participate in several campaigns simultaneously so applying scam detection mechanism to all might be a pain in the neck. It is helpful if you also join bounty discussion groups where people share their thoughts on projects and educate each other.

The best way to avoid fraud in ICO is to not participate in them. However, wanting to get high returns, participants want to take risks. I support such investors.

A good way would be to always make sure that you are researching into any coin that you are going to invest into before you put your money into it. There are so many people who are investing in coins that they know nothing about just because of the hype around the coin, that is one of the best ways to avoid the scams, don't follow the crowd so much

There would not be them, of course life would be better for all of us. But this is simply unrealistic. Many easier to become rich in this way

Ask yourself: does this project need blockchain or it could survive without it. Most of projects implement blockchain with no real reason, so their ICOs fail fast.

The scammers are getting better and better at what they do so sometimes it makes it harder for us to vet which ones are real and which ones are bad. Even the most known people can be paid in sponsorship and they could be bought and hype the coin and when you see someone important telling everyone one coin is good usually makes everyone get hyped up about that coin and get into it. Only to realize that coin was a scam coin and they made the famous person tell it because he got money for it.

There are times they lie about who supports their coins and you believe it unless you really research and learn it actually is not true. Scammers get away with millions of dollars from these ICO projects so they sometimes spend thousands of coins just to get more money from you and run away with it.

Yes the first thing I check are the names of team behind the ICO project. Some people don't even bother to research the project before investing so they get easily scammed. Many good ICO projects also are real but if they didn't reach the softcap then thats the time they are scam.

The greatest way to avoid scam projects is to avoid all ICOs that tries to enter the market by themselves. I mean of course there are a few projects that need to do all thing by their own and they got real idea and thoughts how can they realize it. But the percentage of such projects is too low.
If command can't hire bounty manager at least and create new account to manage it - it is not good sign

although it will not be fully successful in avoiding projects that are only deceptive, but with caution and thoroughness in choosing ICO, it will minimize us being deceived when participating in the ICO. I think ICO rating sites are also quite helpful because on ICO rating sites there are projects that have been researched, so we don't have to bother checking out many ICOs, just choosing from one of the ICOs on the ICO rating site.

I invested in several projects, which were aimed at insurance of investments, beause it is the only way to bring some part of trust back. You should do the same.

I think the factors that you have mentioned are already enough to avoid a scam, if we have known about those factors well, I think we will not get trapped on a scam then. We must analyze and research a project before deciding to join.

Denial of responsibility in every ICOs' WP - it seems to me tha world gone completely mad. That is why I keep distance from ICOs and other crowdfunding activities.
To avoid ICO scams, we should improve our knowledge of how to analyze the coin, anticipate the ICO's trend, thus avoiding fraudulent ICO projects, and especially detecting the project. ICO scams are involved in their community will see clearly.

I think, the four factors that you mentioned are appropriate for avoiding fraud on the ICO project. Of the four factors, the Team of the ICO project was very influential on the fraud of the ICO project.
Because, when fraud occurs, many parties lose, not just investors. Including the manager who manages the bounty.

Checking if an ICO project has already a working product is a good criteria. Most projects only make promises with just a whitepaper and most fail to produce a product. Having a working product you can test is a good indication that what they're aiming is achievable.

The thing is ICO's are not regulated there are so many of them and anyone with the capacity can start a project. It is still a good idea to do research and see its details to avoid scam.

Nice thread with very valid points. It's important to know about all those things before investing. In addition, you should also look at the use case to determine the viability of the project and don't invest in a project that talks about the potential future value or returns of their token. Ignore hype and look at actual progression on stated milestones.

One good way would be to be ready to do extensive research, once you have a project that you are interested in investing in then you are going to want to look up everything that is related to the project which is what is going to help you determine if you are dealing with a legit project or with a scam project. Also looking up their projects on social media would be a good place to start

I agree, if you do not want to be deceived, then you should not invest in ICO projects at all. Guarantees of the project integrity will not even attract celebrities. The best characteristic of the projects utility is their popularity on crypto exchanges. Therefore, for me, the best solution is to buy tokens immediately after they are listed on exchanges while their price is at the bottom.

I think it is always hard to detect scams easily because the people behind the scam would tell you almost as truthfully as possible so that you might be thinking if it is real. They would do always to encourage you to join as much as others would do normally. I think when an ICO is promising too much there could be a possibility that such an impossible promise will tell you that they are scam. So maybe promises that are impossible to do could be a clue.

The only way to avoid the ICO Project Scam is to do analysis. We can do analysis by searching for information on various websites and forums. Besides that, following various developments in information in a community can help us monitor what points will help the project develop.

When there is something suspicious then we should avoid the ICO project, keep the assets we have and it will help us to get closer to success.

Overall, the best way to avoid scam ICOs is to become very diligent and serious enough to make tedious and deep research as to the credentials of every single member of the team, the details of the objectives of the project and how they would go about reaching them , the products, the economy, the roadmaps, partnerships, and so many other facets.

Carefully reading whitepapers is only one of the tasks needed to fully come up with the best choice of ICO.

Without the necessary traits to do all these, the best way left to avoid scam ICOs is to avoid ICOs altogether.

Most times, those behind the project will give you easy clue if a project is scam or not. If you must confirm the authenticity of the project, then you should contact the presented team one after the other and ensure  that their identities are real. Not only about real identity, but that they must have experience on blockchain and perhaps might have been involved in one project or the other on blockchain.

In order for your plan to work, you need to have some experience in analyzing projects and understanding how the token itself works, why it is, how the project implemented the product, etc. A deep understanding of all project processes is the key to success.

Since some ICO uses blockchain technology, it is worth studying the repository for storing the code of this project (GitHub or any other) to check their reliability. If the ICO claims to use open source code, then the repository check will immediately give the answer, whether it is or not, because the code updates should occur at least once every two weeks.

Yes, regulation is necessary. Now ICO projects have been reduced a lot. The future regulation must be strict, but we must also give more opportunities to new projects. If ICO is directly banned, some good projects maybe also very hard or need a long time to come out even this project is really very good, like bitcoin. Even bitcoin ICO is also looks like scam in the early days. ;D

Better to participate in ICO projects with the parent company behind. And many financial institutions have poured capital to invest in that project. There are many investments from organizations that will be a financial advantage to help maintain the project longer and a parent company behind the project will be much more powerful than a lonely startup project.

For bounty hunter in this forum, there are also some that must be known, namely knowing the manager who manages the bounty whether it can be trusted or not. it can be seen from the many positive comments from the participants here.

In this field of activity you must check everything before investing, because there are a lot of scam projects. As for me, I look through WP, check the activity of the GIT and for sure  look at the previous achievements of the dev team. If they have experience and know how to create really awesome project, I can invest in such ICO, but always use Risk management.

the best way to avoid ICO fraud is not to invest in ico. that's the only way you can do it. choosing ico isn't as easy as you imagine, even projects that reach hardcap can't be expected.

I do not think it guarantees that we will not be fooled by fake ICO because a manager also does not know the certainty of ICO and there are even managers who work with fake ICO to deceive us.

1. Must know detail Concept of the ICO project
A good ICO project must have a good concept.

2. See market segmentation

3. Long-term orientation

Honestly, it is difficult to avoid scam projects. Most ptojects aim to gain profit, that is why some details in their whitepaper is sugar coated. I think you must look at the progress of the project, and look how the team delivers their development in their project. This attracts potential investors as the project progresses.

I usually look at:

1) The idea of the project. It should be worthy and smart enough. This is one of the key features of every ICO.

2) The team. Who are these guys? What background do they have? What portfolio?

3) The website. Userfriendly and modern design. Is it good looking at least?

4) The whitepaper. It should be detailed enough and look seriously)

5) The news and results of past rounds/private sales. Are the devs doing anything now? How much have they already collected?

The best way to avoid ICO fraud projects. Actually, we cannot guess the ICO Project whether it is scam or not. Because the ICO scam project is certainly very good game. Therefore many investors are deceived. What is certain and must be seen from the ICO project is that the Team, vision, mission, plan ahead. The actual rating is also important. So you have to analyze it first.

For me, the very first things I look out for are: good team, product or MVP, Token economics. If any ICO passes these tests, then it's OK. What problem are they solving and at what capacity? Are they bringing up something new or and improvement to something already existing? Can the team achieve the project aim based on their past experiences?  Is the ICO over priced, what's the vesting period for the tokens reserved for Team? Questions like this will go a long way to assist in one's research.

Because the fraud project has caused a large number of ICO investors to leave, many ICO projects will not succeed, so I think it is not a period of avoiding fraud but should avoid ICO investment. We should give it to the market to purify and wait for a good time to invest again.

Usually in ANN branches write about what a good project, or what a great project and wish good luck to the creators, but few people ask specific questions about what is actually a project. This of course applies to more little-known projects.

The only way how to avoid scam ICO projects is not investing into this sector. Look about some big ICOs scams that raised hundreds of millions of dollars in their ICO phase (Centra, Envion) - these projects were very interesting for many investors, not only crypto investors invested into these projects, but what happened? They run with our money, even the team looks legit, even they had licenses and everything for a good start.

Beside the mentioned ones, we always have to look into the technical details in the WP and analyze it. Another tip is to research the ICOs social activities, how they interact to their communities, but there is no 100% protection against scam projects.

No thorough research of ICO projects can save us from fraudulent ICOs. Recently this was once again witnessed by the ICO DESICO project, which apparently looked like a good project, but turned out to be a fraud. Their team simply stated that it would not pay bounty hunters for services. The only way out of this situation is the state regulation of ICO activities. Only state bodies with certain powers can save us from fraudsters in the ICO.

Previously, the ICO project was almost no longer in demand by most investors (if not mistaken, in Q3 2017), because investing in ICO was considered a method for building new whales. This thing finally proved to be true, especially when the new pope had a lot of funds deposited by investors, they began distributing coins/tokens that they had created to their investors. But at the same time ICO holders began selling Altcoin they had buy which they had previously used for their Project Basic Assets such as Ethereum, Eos, etc. When the sale occurs, of course the crypto price they exploit will suffer a fatal fall because the crypto volume they have's quite large.

However, ICO reappeared precisely in Q4 2017, at that time the crypto market suddenly received a lot of interest with quite diverse reasons. Simultaneously, ICO became popular among the public because of its rapid development, making most investors interested and began buying cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Eos to exchange it for different new tokens.

In Q2 of 2018, ICO was again shunned by crypto users, because most of them 90% were proven to carry out SCAM actions, at that time weren't a few investors whose funds were stolen by ICO holders.

1. Must know detail Concept of the ICO project
A good ICO project must have a good concept.

By carrying out the right research, and the existence of legal certainty from the authorities that the ICO they run, has been declared feasible to be used as an investment vehicle, it's not surprising if all investments will come to the ICO they are managing.

4. Team
Who are the people who work behind the project

IMO the population of a team that has quality and honest, needs to be leveled up and it's expected to develop as much as possible so that the startup this year and the following years will be better than those launched in 2017.

see the project in detail is a weakness of many people at this time. many of them are ignoring this and just look at the amount of the fee is great and also follow the flow of people entering inside. This is the wrong direction and culminates in a scam when they didn't want to deepen the good with crypto.

If thats too good to be true and they reached their hardcap for a shorter period of time . Also if they have no strong numbers of community who supports the project, that could be a sign also that the project wont work.

For me, this is how to distinguish scam project to gate-away on it.
First of all, you should read White Paper carefully. It will help you to understand the meaning and mechanism of project clearly. Next, which is important-check an official site of this Project. There would be introduced the team members and basic sponsors. And, of course, check official Telegram Chat Room and social media channels of this Project.

Even after that sort of detailed inspection of ICOs, no one be certain if ICOs meeting all criteria about the project going to be genuine. We should check how is the response on social platforms of that particular ICO before the token sale and after the tokens sold. Many social platforms or groups admin gone absent or with very minimal active or exit when token sale is finished.

Thank You
The best way is not to invest in them, especially when after a successful ending, many simply throw off tokens. Then sense to wait and risk, if you can safely buy cheap tokens and at the same time not lose anything.

The easiest way is to analyze various aspects related to the project. look at the existing whitepaper data and we have to check the existing team. also join the digital currency initiative community, there we can get the best advice and decisions.

That's right too, you need to be prepared for the fact that the coins of this product will not be immediately profitable!

One of the methods to check what the team is doing is to check the GitHub activities, how many commits they have etc.
It is important to check to avoid scam projects as some of them put everything nicely on paper but no real development.

Many people no longer read whitepaper, does not examine the team or do not do detailed research. They only look at telegram groups or invest on friends' advice. Many ico collects too much money with this amateur investors and then project will be scam :D

the way you say it is quite logical and I always do it before participating in the ico project, the first thing I do is of course how the ico team works if I think it's transparent and obviously the background of course I will follow, the rest certainly explores in more detail.

One of the most effective and simplest way, is through the team.
There are some scam projects that use anonymous team. Whenever I see a thing like that, I quickly take my leave, because as far as I am concerned, it is a red light.
In some cases, the project might have stolen the identity of some innocent people and pose them as the team. This is why you need to search intensely.

Scammers are very smart. A developer might decide to reveal his identity, successfully carry out the ICO to get funds.
He might even go as far as listing on exchange and after some time, since he is holder the larger amount of tokens, he would then dump on investors.
After he might have sold almost everything, the project is termed dead and you hear nothing about the project again.

To invest in projects, you really need to spend a lot of time studying it and the factors that listed above are one of many to pay attention to. But now it is very difficult to find a good investment project that will bring you profit, even if you have a lot of experience. Therefore, I personally refrain from investing in projects in these market conditions.

overall it's speculative, and we also won't know the ending of ico. but if the crypto market goes back to the moon, I think almost all of the ico will be good too, not a lot of scams will happen.

Without a doubt, everything that the author described in his topic is great tips that can be useful for a beginner. But as practice shows in the world of cryptocurrency, quite often there are various paradoxes that have no logical explanation, sometimes a coin that does not have any external signs and prospects - it can turn out to be very profitable, and that project on which everyone had high hopes - can turn out to be fraud.
