Title: US or China: Who do you think will legalize bitcoin first?
Post by: Sherwood_Archer on October 13, 2018, 05:40:59 PM
Just curious which one would be more accepting of bitcoin or any cryptocurrency for that matter. China nowadays seem to headline a lot about artificial intelligence and other technology. They are also promoting a cashless society. So I am betting on China.
Feel free to contradict. This is just me overthinking. Maybe, neither would even legalize it in the future. Or perhaps countries would create their own crypto?

Neither of them will do so anytime soon, nor  .  . . . ever.

The notion of Bitcoin stands in fundamental contradistinction to the idea of a centralised nation-state. So, as long as that entity exists, there's no space in it's Venn diagram for any non-state virtual currency.

Correct me if am wrong, but bitcoin is. OT illegal UK the US, and individuals have to go through a registration process and be licensed to own it and see also taxed on purchases.

China on the other hand are looking to localize digital assets. And grow their own cryptocurrency.

Well, right now the ownership of Bitcoin is not 'illegal' in both countries, US and China.

If you mean the full implemention similar to the national currency, I think it's very unlikely in both countries in the near future. In the US Bitcoin is already very popular, but I think in the government are too many sockpuppets of wallstreet and most of them would lose a part of their power if Bitcoin gets stronger. In addition, the US would do nothing that would endanger the dollar's influence in international competition and that would be endangered with Bitcoin. So it will be very important for the USA to keep the dollar as number one. Also big companies like Visa an Mastercard are influencing politicans to stay away from Bitcoin (and maybe pay them) because Bitcoin is their direkt competitor in digital payment.
Many politicians are against Bitcoin, not everyone is positive like John McAfee.  ;)

And it is not much better in China. The communist government has already concluded many measures to limit Bitcoin, such as limiting mining and discouraging people of buying bitcoin. The reason, in my opinion, is that the government is in danger of losing parts of its power in the country. It is still a very communist country, not a liberal.

But I'm sure the people will see the benefits of Bitcoin, no matter which measures the governments takes to prevent it.

I think China will soon be legalizing bitcoin in the future. I realize that there are many bitcoin investors coming from China although this country does not support electronic money. Many factories to exploit bitcoin are built here. From here, I see that the Chinese government may soon be legalizing bitcoin.

It has a point. Bitcoin is made for Asian first and probably the first legalization will come to asia. Another factor is stated above in which China needs bitcoin that is why they will going to legalized it. A very good thing for China. America allows the use of it but not really. Thay just let their citizen to do so.

I don't understand why so many of you think that China will legalize it. China is the county with a highly censored Internet and a country that has fought Bitcoin since 2013. They  banned banks from doing business with cryptocurrency exchanges, they forced miners out of the country. Do you really believe they'll suddenly change their mind?

Of course US will do first. China just have too many problems with bitcoin, high ranking officers are very corrupted there, they are eager to hide their fortune they steal from the country and bitcoin is the best vehicle for it. If legalized, it will become the paradise of corruption.

In my opinion, I think that's not a possibility in anytime soon, especially with China. China has expressed her complete unsupport for Bitcoin and more worse crypto. Also, with USA, they'll debate over this for years and they'll never accept, not with the old head economist hating Bitcoin. So we'll be hanging around and trading oyr precious for years and i love that lol..

I tend to believe US will be first and I'll tell why:
* if you read more you'll see that China's "cashless society" thing is closer to a lie than to reality.
* actually the first can be considered Germany, I think. Malta is next? I am not sure if I am accurate here.
* because of Germany, France, UK and then US may follow
* although 180 turns are not unexpected from China, bitcoin exchanges are still not allowed there, right?

In my opinion, American society is more prepared for the official adoption of Bitcoin than China. But in fact, everything can change completely depending on which country will have enough political will to adopt legislation regarding the use of cryptocurrencies.

This is a very interesting question. The conflict between these giants is growing every day. I heard that bitcoin was prohibited in China, its mining, and with it all cryptography. But in America, Bitcoin was already taxed. And they are trying to master the technology. By this I put on America)))

I think US will be the first to legalize cryptocurrency specially bitcoin because they are already aware about it and planning to do so. US are now asking permit to operate for every cryptocurrency related business. China is a big county in terms of economic and commercialism but they are not so fast to adopt new technology related in digital currency.

It won't be China because that is a communist country where they never want the decentralization in anything then how they will allow decentralized bitcoin into their system but they maybe better in new technologies so they will create new currency for themselves or they will just go with NEO.

A preview of past events as well as personal opinion, China is the most likely to legalize bitcoin first. Considering the China people enthusiasm towards cryptocurrency, China have all it takes to legalize Bitcoin first. Despite China government/bank ban on ICOs, they are the most likely. In the near future, if they are able to sort things out properly, it could be legalized. I think China have more cryptocurrency platforms than US at least prior to government stringent policy.

China is heavily cracking down on crypto's since last year. China's PBoC doesn't want crypto to take off because of its non-regulated and decentralization. So I have no doubt that legalization is not on the horizon. As far as the US though, they're very careful on issuing regulations as they also afraid of bitcoins pseudo-anonymity. Personally though I think US will at least regulate in the future as we have seen positive statement from SEC Chairman Jay Clayton.

Well many in here are saying that the U.S. will surely be first in regulating bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, But I really think neither of the two will be regulating any crypto, for now, We can not tell if what's ahead in the future and both have a qualification in doing the same thing, What if both countries will regulated bitcoin at the same time? or another country will be regulated first, There should be Russia in the option above, We can sure learn more about Japan and its adoption for cryptocurrency regulation,

But you can go to this website to see on the list who's country and territory to legalized cryptocurrency first https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country_or_territory

America will be the first country to accept Bitcoin because this is a very developed country and Donald Trump is a smart guy, so he will choose the best things to help him achieve his desire. China is a difficult country to open up to investors, and in particular, China has many bans on Bitcoin and Crypto.

Maybe the first who really legalize bitcoin is the US because I heard some news who banning bitcoin will not good. But I hope more country will legalize bitcoin so we can pump again bitcoin.  No more country ban bitcoin but they will leglize, accept and adapt bitcoin to have more investor of bitcoin to pimp again the value.

Well I think it was China if the China legalized it in their country it will have a big impact in the market because one of the big investor is came from China they are one of the group that has a huge amount of bitcoin hold or let say almost half of bitcoin was there in their country although they not legalized it and as far as I know bitcoin was not ban in their country just the ICO.

The US government already allow the use of Bitcoin currency and China is not finish of regulating it therefore i could say too that US is the most friendly in talking if Crypto currency between these two powerful country. Here is the link for our common understanding of which countries in favor of Bitcoin or not https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Legal_status_of_bitcoin_(new).png.

if the choice is only China and USA, I will choose USA, seeing the track record of China, which several times banned crypto especially bitcoin makes people doubt about this. USA will probably be the first among the two of them, but not in the near future, because they are currently focused on their country's currency (dollars) which continues to strengthen every month. seeing the trade war between the two countries, even though USA was the first to legalize crypto, if it had a positive impact, I was sure that China would soon legalize crypto.

in my opinion, it is we who will first legalize BTC as a virtual payment instrument in their country, because from what we know, Chine is currently still carrying out very strict regulations on cryptocurrency in its country, I don't know whether their reasons for reducing fraud with cryptocurrency or want payment with money to be safer, or even they want to make cryptocurrency themselves

I think the acceptance <As a currency> in the USA will happen in segments from State to State and not in the USA as the whole. America is too divided to do this all at once.  ::)

I doubt if China will ever accept Bitcoin as a currency, because their government is over protective of their currency and also over their economy. <They want total control over everything and Bitcoin is seen as a threat to their control >  ::)

So my bet is on the USA.  :P

China is on way to localize digital assets. US would not lose its economical power and dollar useage in international trades. It is vital for the US to keep the dollar number one. I think China seems likely, but US government may suddenly change its attitude if it can find a way to make Bitcoin in their control.

I will give my vote to United States and I strongly believe that they will be the first country who will legize bitcoin before China. United States always wanted not to be left behind in terms of technology and level of wealth. Bitcoin once considered as valuable than Bitcoin and if you do some research, United States always using their power to get what they wanted.

China, in this case, is a little more advanced than other developing countries even like America in terms of blockchain technology, even China has made its own coins with its NEO to provide a new touch of digital payment technology in the world, especially in Asia. I think China will develop technology like this in the future because they know how to prospect this technology in the future.

Both are very strong market bodies and their role in recent development and economy balancing/uplift have been nearly shoulder to shoulder. But I feel that the United States will likely take up its legalization and integration in their market. I feel that America will want to remain the leading market in the global Economy and remain strong in the face of the earth. So this might happen for them faster than it will happen for China. But if China makes the move before US, then I won't be surprised because China is also trying and really fighting to change the world's power from US to their soil.

The Americans are a liberal society and are far apart China as long as governance and mannerisms are concerned. The only thing that makes China square up to the US is the huge economy it parades because of its gargantuan population that runs into billion. China is a conservative society. I believe bitcoin will be first adopted in the US long before the Chinese finally embrace it. We should also remember how China flunked the opportunity of becoming a lead nation in bitcoin when it banned all crypto activities and exchanges in 2017. And this damage may be very had to undo.

I  read many articles saying that bitcoin will never be legalize on china because many people are using it as scams and only few market are "legal" to use but without the government papers. It is very hard for bitcoin to become legalize there because it is just virtual and it is very easy to penetrate the system.

I also think China will legitimately bitcoin in advance. Because limited government to impose laws that could jeopardize the savings they have earned. Many Chinese nationals previously deal with government officials and now Nowadays they are building their "bitcoin" facades. The whole Internet will gradually migrate to Blockchain technology, I think they will set the rules for it. We have seen tremendous development. in the Chinese team! Who has seen NEO yet? I think It would be china...

As we know bitcoin is strictly prohibited in most of the countries due to having various lame issues and fair issues. Since bitcoin is controlled by decentralizing way so there is no specific laws to maintain this crypto market. In my point of view, I can go for China, China is country where cryptocurrency finds its real place to extend its area of advertising more about bitcoin smoothly. So US and China in both of this country, I ponder China will legalize bitcoin first for its popularity. On the other hand, bitcoin is becoming extremely popular to the people of China for Making plenty of money in a very simple way.

The answer is simple; US will legalize the bitcoin first. But China will control it. There is a huge economic war between US and China at the moment and China doesn not want to use USD at the international markets and want to damage USD. China (and the Chinese companies) is also the biggest USD dolar investor. Just think what is going to happen if China will sell USD and start to use BTC for example.

Even I think neither of them will legalise Bitcoin and I have a point.China and America right now are the greatest competitors in the global market and if anyone who legalise Bitcoin that means there own centralized currency get weak and thus making there hold the market weak. This will be unaffordable to any nation specially at this time. i don't think the Chinese government is dumb enough to think they can control bitcoin. specially when they release their altcoin ranking every now and then it is completely clear that they already know they can not control it which is why they are so happy about the centralized altcoins that they have more control over.

Bitcoin has always been legal in both the US and in China.  Having lived in both places and now living in China I could tell you more, but otherwise your question seems misphrased.  Here people are certainly more ready for mass adoption of public coin because virtual currencies are already the predominant method of payment, but the coins are privately issued - wechat and alipay tokens mostly.  Publicly issued coins like bitcoin et al. are used but mostly just for trading and person to person.  China is certainly a more free environment in most every aspect especially economic, but app stores here don't have bitcoin wallets and I haven't seen any public coin used in a retail setting, whereas in the US there are quite a few establishments using it as a retail payment method not just for person to person or business to business transactions.

For me China is much more ahead to legalize bitcoin rather than US,it is because China nowadays is one of the largest Bitcoin mining farm average in the entire world. Even there's a lot of issues that China banned bitcoin before but time has changed, that's why this country has the biggest percentage average in terms of bitcoin mining rigs.

Agree. I think China is more advantageous than the United States or the rest. If you look around the news. You can hear that Korea is also very active with crypto. However, perhaps everything is tilted toward China as they have mining halls and labor from the great miners. It is possible that ~ 70% of the stations are located in them. And that's the reason I'm guessing that the SEC is going to go to the ETF very early. May be the end of the year or 2019.

This is true. I remember reading an article saying that China is mining like 70% of bitcoin in the world. So there is the possibility that China would really be more accepting of it than the US.

Just because China is pushing for a cashless society doesn't mean it's going to legalize cryptocurrency soon. And like you said, they are busy developing artificial intelligence at the moment. I don't think they are adopting bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency in the near future, which leaves us the US.

With the way the US is focused on the economy, it's highly unlikely that the country will legalize bitcoin soon as well.

The US may likely do that first as china is always looking for cheap opportunities. The US is also in competiton with China as it has always accused China of flooding everywhere with take stuffs.
The first to legalize bitcoin is USA, even to make it easier for bitcoin users to do the transaction Bitcoin ATMs are provided in the USA in the amount of 2372 with the most placements in Los Angeles totaling 258 ATMs. As a developed country the USA is very open to the latest technology, including digital currency technology.

But in US I never see such things maybe when it comes to legalize it first Us will go 1st and china I just don't know.

China is much stricter with its controls, in addition to having a more direct ban on cryptos, if I'm not mistaken the US ban is on ICOs that practically see them as gambling, so probably USA will establish the first regulations and normalize the use of cryptos in their country, China is usually a little more conservative in that.

The US first legalized bitcoin, even in their country there are already many Bitcoin ATMs that make it easier for bitcoin owners to carry out their activities using bitcoin. The infrastructure available in the US is more modern than China, so the use of bitcoin as a payment tool is easier. While China is less aggressive in responding to bitcoin as a currency, it is very enthusiastic in developing the blockchain, the technology that accompanies bitcoin.

I believe it'll be USA who'll recognise it, look at the members of Sec board 3 out 5 are bitcoins supporters even their chairman supports it. Also it's pertinent to note that the incoming chief of staff of President Trump supports Bitcoins. It is tough question to say which country will legalize BTC first. but as far the experts both are the developed countries and looking towards Artificial Intelligence and Digital market. China is already started mining the bitcoin and it is done widely in china but so they might legalize first. The both country will neither legalize it any sooner because as for the situation of it, they are not ready to fully accept it. China has seemed to be very anti-Bitcoin/crypto as of recently, whereas the US is very open to crypto, and even talking about how to better tax it, etc. The major big thing in the US that I was last familiar with was the reluctance for a Bitcoin ETF, whereas in China, they were cracking down on "illegal" crypto miners.

According to Wikipedia:
"Bitcoin and similar cryptocurrencies are regulated as both currency and as a security under U.S. law. Within the U.S. many states are also pursuing legislative/regulatory efforts to cover crypto instruments"

So crypto is being recognized on a Federal level and within some of the individual States.

Whereas according to the Library of Congress:
"China does not recognize cryptocurrencies as legal tender and the banking system is not accepting cryptocurrencies or providing relevant services. The government has taken a series of regulatory measures to crack down on activities related to cryptocurrencies for purposes of investor protection and financial risk prevention. Those measures include announcing that initial coin offerings are illegal, restricting the primary business of cryptocurrency trading platforms, and discouraging Bitcoin mining. In the meantime, China’s central bank is reportedly considering issuing its own digital currency."

Communist mainland China desires control over every aspect of life, and they certainly don't want a means of exchange that would be out of their control and that could move money out of the country without their knowing/control (some of this probably also applies to the United States, or at least certain entities within her).

Hope that helps,
The Cyberius team.

nvestors, which is a good thing considering the level of insanity or scams that abound in the space.China on the other hand are not even ready to discuss its merits or giver her citizens a chance to make their opinion known.
Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being totally the opposite. The US might be thr rejecting the approach of bitcoin, where as the Chinese goverment would accept it either through strict regulation or through free flow. The Chinese government will always want to stay ahead of everything by any means.

Difficult to say, to be honest. I have already thought about this question, but I have no definite answer. In China, there is a tradition to create something of their own, and not to accept someone else's. They successfully copy the ideas of other countries, but still try to create their own product. This applies to everything. From the Alipay billing system to mobile phones. And for some reason it seems to me that China can do the same with cryptocurrencies. Release your cryptocurrency and legalize it only in China. In the US, it is becoming more democratic, but the bureaucratic apparatus of the old farts may have been considering the issue of legalizing cryptocurrency for years.

Thats not true .  if we look them closely we can easily tell that china is more strict compare to u.s thats why u.s will first legalize bitcoin  and infact bitcoin is already legal in the u.s because u.s is the first country that discovered crypto ( if im not mistaken )  because satoshi is also from the u.s .China in a nutshell is already restricting cryptos before but i dont know if they are now allowing it today since its been two years after they announce the banning  .

At this moment bitcoin in both country aren't totally banned in own understanding US and china want to regulate bitcoin that't reason why bitcoin as currency. Difficult to rell which of two country be the first legalized bitcoin without any regulation or approval feom the central bank of wach nation.

I believe that state of Arizona in US are accepting bitcoin in their judicial payments(correct me if i am wrong)and there is another one that i forgot, what i mean here is america seems to be more open in accepting bitcoin and cryptocurrency than china in which we know that expert in pirating so theres no impossible if they can imitate crypto

Do not consider the current market situation and who is doing what in terms of crypto currencies.  Once the crypto is more popular both china and US will be bound to legalize it. All the current bans and regulations will be removed as there  will be no option left but to accept bitcoin if they want to survive the financial market.

Legalizing Bitcoin is very toughest job because we cannot do anything for the legal prement it can be only approved by the government of each and every country this will be happen at any time but you have to definitely wait for the future.

+1
Socking but this is just the truth. None of them will legalize bitcoin. They see it as a threat to their economy. No government is willing to give back power to the power unless we are ready to take it back by any means.  I don't see any of the above countries accepting bitcoin any time soon.

Both have the opportunity to become one of the countries that will legalize bitcoin. as we know that the development of technology in both countries is very good so it is very possible that the people in that country will fully support the use of digital currencies in daily financial transactions. with a very large number of people, of course, what happens in the USA and China will affect the development of digital currencies globally. the number of digital financial transactions from these two countries is on a very high scale.

I think that countries will gradually legalize cryptocurrency. Which of the above countries will do it first I don’t know. Most likely this will be the United States, since the form of government that is now in China and those people who are on the board of the country are not interested that citizens of the country have access to free trade in crypto currencies. The fact that the countries in the future will create their own cryptocurrency, I have no doubt.

in my opinion the United States has more potential to legalize bitcoin than China, we can see it by comparing every economic decision made by the two countries, the US is always one step ahead of China.

China always goes for their own commodities and so can be the case with cryptocurrencies also. Few months back i heard that china banned the Initial Coin Offerings and some of the major cryptocurrency exchanges. Also china banned some of the huge mining farms. As compared to US, they are really much more ahead in terms of cryptocurrencies. They also have a lot of crypto holders amongst them most of them HODL bitcoins. Also most of the ICO projects are been started by US citizens so i think they can legalize bitcoins before china does.

I think China will but albeit in an indirect kind of way. The US is taking forever to allow US investors to invest in ICOS among other things and they haven't yet approved an ETF either. I know the Americans want the U.S to legalise and regulate Bitcoin and crypto in a much faster way but I believe they have a hidden agenda in taking their time to do so. I think smaller countries like Malta, Switzerland, and Singapore will take the leap of faith forward and other countries as well like Dubai who are already going to even put their Government on the Blockchain. In Dubai you can buy luxury apartments in Bitcoin as well now, among other luxury items for sale there of course.

Bitcoin is legal in China.Trading is illegal that is all
But citizens can own bitcoin and pay if there are merchants what are accepting bitcoin

In a case of USA bitcoin is not recognized like money but if find merchants what accept bitcoin you can pay with bitcoin
We have futures based in USA and US exchanges with big volume so for sure bitcoin is not illegal in USA

Observing the two countries closely, I believe China will legalize bitcoin first before US. Unlike US, China isn't hat strictly when it comes to adopting technologies. US on the other hand will want to make so many analysis first before legalizing it so her citizens won't end up investing or using something they will later regret. So I believe bitcoin will be legalized in China first before US.

What are you talking about? The race is long over.

In china you can't use bitcoin and financial institutions are still banned from working with bitcoin businesses.

In the US you can pay taxes with Bitcoin. Some politicians said they are holding. Starbucks will work with Bakkt to give you easy payments. There are ATMs in many places.
It's not even a race anymore.
