Title: Do you HODL because you believe the price will go up? Or are you lost too much?
Post by: jonathan6655321 on November 17, 2018, 03:42:36 PM
I wonder if you HODL because you believe the price will go up? Or are you lost too much already so you don't see any reason to sell because you won't be satisfied with the money you will cash out?
I have this self-conflict for a few months already

both of your questions are very true, in general everyone is experiencing your two questions I am sure with that, I personally hold my assets because I still hope there will be a surge in prices that will occur
now is not the time to sell or buy, it's better to stay for a moment

In most cases, it depends on the risk/reward ratio. Being a bagholder is no good, but it's always better to hold for some time, even month or 1-2 years, then sell, if the loss is too much. I don't see any argument in selling at 80-99% loss. In such cases, it's better to forget about your coins and give them a chance (or put reasonable orders on exchanges).

I used to gamble around $30-$50k a year in Las Vegas and lost more than I won. Now I gamble on bitcoin and lose far less. Only hold if you’re not gambling with the last dollar in your pocket. Every time you buy bitcoin you need to think to yourself, “would I put this money on red on a roulette table knowing there’s at least a 50% chance I’ll lose it?” If the answer is no don’t buy bitcoin.

I lost a lot of money in the red market. Now the market is very dangerous, but I think that there will be a short-term growth of all coins. Then there will be volatility until mid-December and then the rapid growth will begin

Personally i HODL because i believe so much on cryptocurrency and not the loses i incur already. The crypto-market price dropped horribly which has negative impact on it holders but not withstanding those who can read beyond the chart will understand that after this deep market the bull run will be set. The whales that instigate this deep fall be still be the ones to rise the bull, so, HODL for it will not tarry!!!.

And now, i will all in my fiat to buy those because it's in dip already.
I'm sure this year there will be a bull run

I think for the time being I prefer holding. And even I will buy more bitcoin. Because I'm sure the price of bitcoin will rise again.
I think the decline in bitcoin prices is currently affected by the BCH hardfork incident. When everything is normal and stable, I'm sure the price of bitcoin will rise again.
Yes, just hold and still be patient.  ;)

The current market situation is the best hold option or adding funds for your investment amount, the market is very cheap and in my opinion this is the moment of investment for the biggest profit next year

Both are indeed, this two are most commonly did by the community users of crypto. Particularly now, majority of the coin holders are bullish including myself of course, because this is the only way I can do to recover all the losses have gone before during a couple of months which has been declined in a long period of time, so I guess we just need to be patience only.

Both coz i believe bitcoin and altcoins will rise again and also i have a big loss on bitcoin and ethereum so i really have to hold it. I believe the market situation is the best time to buy coins/tokens and hold it until next year. Risky but i know it's worth it.

I don't think that the cryptomarket will grow in the near future. I just don't sell coins, because I don't see the point. Now I’ll get very little money for them. I hope that someday these coins will be a big surprise for me.

I hodl simply because it makes trading much more easier for me,as I do not really have to do much calculations and studying of the market situation,i just hodl diverse coins, for a particular period of time stipulated by me, and if the price isn't at my desired price, I simply continue to hodl on, it could be frustrating most times, especially if the price isn't coming good, but a panic sale is always out of my plans

I'm using Bitcoin for a five years now and I've seen much worse scenarios with Bitcoin and didn't give up so I don't have such bad attitude towards current price.
I hold Bitcoin because I beleive it and because it's my way of life. I know that not always situation will be ideal and we have to hold on the bad times too. That is how I see it.
I usualy don't buy Bitcoins but earn them so I'm in much better situation than those who have bought it and lost a lot since last year. That is why your personal goals and strategy are very important.

Well, I'll say I hope he gets up. Although I have a lot to lose. I didn't buy $ 20,000 worth of bitcoin. I bought violas that have fallen dozens of times, due to the fact that bitcoin has slipped. And to reach at least zero, you need to make bitcoin rally. So I am a long term holder

I think there is a combination of two factors. People lost a lot and believe in growth. In general, this is a very difficult year psychologically for each of us. The fact that you have self-conflict by such questions is nothing terrible.

I hold all my cryptos because I trust that in the long run the market will have a strong appreciation movement and my investments may have the returns that I want. But I also agree that selling now would not help at all and so the only option is to believe that the market will once again become bullish.

I personally have a couple of coins where I'm not selling because I'm in great loss, so I prefer not to sell and wait better times... it's better to wait for a recovery of the market in my opinion than to sell in great loss.

Definitely when I started i HODL thinking the price will go up, but as time goes by I came to realise that it's all greed and before one could realised it will dump back on you really hard to recover will be a long term.

I was holding my investments for a while, but I became in a condition when I needed money right away, so I sold the biggest part per price that moment, yes, I sold cheaper than I invested, but what to do. No matter on all of those prognoses, crypto do not seemed to go to raise so soon.

My motivation for staying here is not going to sell bitcoin below the purchase price because I will get a loss, I just think keep keeping Bitcoin in a down market condition and expect prices to rise high. the possibility of price growth can come in the future.

Of course, I hodl especially these bearish days in order to cut the loss and still hoping that btc will pump hard again. This is the safest way I've known for preservibg the value of my earnings.

But assuming that these bad days don't improve and continue to fall down 'til the moment that I badly needed some money for my thesis then I will not hesitate to withdraw. It's hard for my feelings but I don't have a choice anyway.

It's true. Not only you, I am also a little doubt with the current market condition and think whether HODL is the best choice or not. But it seems we have no choice to avoid losses except with HODLing. Yeah, If I sell my coins in low price, I will be very unsatisfied.

I believe this is the best way to do when btc is on bear market since you will not be gaining profit if you sell it this time and it's not the right time to do it. I believe that it will recover soon even if it takes a bit longer in waiting, people should have to extend their patience in times like this. This maybe the right time and opportunity in buying additional btc  so as to gain additional profit from your investment once bull market takes over.

while the price is low it still a good opportunity to buy some

Hodl is a better way to avoid losses so I still keep on hodling because I believe that bitcoin and the whole crypto market will stage a bounce back in the near future. But even in the bearish period of the market there still some price movement, it means coins have price uptrends, some of them significant to make a good profit. I hodl only those coins that has the potential to go up in the future.

A few months ago, I lost a lot of money in the red market. At present, we are also facing a bear market. I think this time is not perfect to sell my assets. So I will hold my assets for the long-term. I believe in the future I will get enough profits from my investment.

I held a hold because I am sure that in the future there is still hope that bitcoin will be accepted by the public and the market will improve again, and large losses strengthen the decision to hold, because even if I sell crypto assets today with losses, it will not change my financial conditions at all. the asset that I hold is an asset that is ready to lose and will not affect my living conditions in the real world.

I hodl because of the two reasons stated by you.  I believe that I am holding the coins because I believe in it.  And if in case I lost my faith on the coin, I would not sell it since it would be a loss if I sell it right now.  So hodl is a win-win solution when we believe in a coin and hold when the market will incur us too much loss if we sell them.

Probably, in my observation majority of the holders they're doing it both, even me If I don't need any hassle I would rather do hold the coins in a long term to minimize the risk, then by doing this things also is the safest methods for us to earn surely, we just need to be patience due to on this way our patience will be measure by this matter anyway.

I hodl because of my beliefs and point of views on what's happening based on my own research and I don't depend on others opinion or suggestions about what's going to happen, I trust my own instinct because, to be honest in here there is no one who knows what might happen in the Crypto Currency market and if the value of Crypto Currencies will increase or decrease except if the whales manipulate the price they might know what's going to happen next LOL. ;D

I'm using Bitcoin for a five years now and I've seen much worse scenarios with Bitcoin and didn't give up so I don't have such bad attitude towards current price.

Those who bought a lot of Bitcoin last year during its skyrocketing already learned their lessons now in a very hard way and I think some of them already sold their hodlings especially when they have affected by FUD and some of them are still hodling planning for a fiat exit when Bitcoin reaches their desired price. In this industry, the real enemy is our emotions and once our emotions are at its peak and uncontrollable those are the times we feel depression and other sorts of negativity. Majority of the time, expectations turn out the opposite way and to have a strong emotional control is surely required in this very wild industry that requires a lot of understanding, knowledge, and patience. 8)

Most times, I hold because I trust so much in the asset(s) and believe it would well on the long run. And very few times I'm forced to hold as the asset has lost value and selling off in huge lost isn't ideal as well.

yes maybe you can wait until next year if the end of this year the price you want does not appear or you can sell it with a small profit if the coins you hold are less promising. no loss if we process it properly and correctly.

I believe that in the beginning, most people hold for the same reason, they believe that bitcoin will have the potential and achieve greater value in the future, then they will get a lot of profits and maybe even become millionaire with as many people have done. But a very sad thing is that over time, the value and what bitcoin is showing goes against all expectations, everyone lost and they stuck at a very high price, and they can only hold to wait for recovery, loss is too much, they no longer have enough confidence in bitcoin

Before i hold my tokens and bitcoin, believing that it will go up (as a newbie back then). I just read articles regarding a particular coins. This speculation is so catchy that i believe that holding my tokens/coins for a certain time will give me a big profit. But in the end i just lost a thousand (in our currency). Im not saying holding is not a good idea but if you believe in your own coins, just hold. Eventhough i lost from holding i still hold some tokens and waiting for its boost in no time.

These past few days weeks or months it was difficult for us to take a risk because we already experienced a lot of failures in dealing with the dump of cryptos. For me still firmly HODL my tokens because I have still the hope that one day cryptos will go up again and a lot of investors,  traders and bounty hunters would deal with crypto again.

Bitcoin has not been stable and i believe that bitcoin price will go up. I suggest that there is no need to sell when you have lost too much.

Well hopefully those projects end up with good results for you dude. I still have majority of my portfolio in btc which sadly is at a loss. No harm for me though since i'm still looking at a year or two or now for my btc holdings.

Of course, both your assumptions are taken into account. We keep our coins and tokens because we believe that the cryptocurrency market will still rise, but on the other hand, this is the most optimal solution in this situation, when the cryptocurrency has fallen in price by more than 70 percent and has been stagnant for almost a year.
The cryptocurrency market develops cyclically, and since it was a normal market decline, it will definitely recover.

I haven't lost anything. Most of my coins were earned not bought with fiat and I don't care about their fiat value much. I'm not going to spend my coins until there are ways to spend. I don't want to exchange it all into fiat first, I want to really use coins daily. That's what I'm waiting for and I know that by the time I'm able to Bitcoin will be worth more than its ATH today.

I've got alot already but if not I would put in, say, $100 per month or so and simply keep doing that - not so much money as to make a difference in the life I live but enough to score a large sum should Bitcoin rise to high amounts like 1/2-million dollars as it could in the next ten years.

I am in the middle of both the situations you mentioned as i am into bitcoin since 2016 so i am laready in profit but fairly down from the ATH which we saw back in december 2017. So i dont see any point in selling now and i am hoping the price will bounce back up soon.

Both situations can occur above all if HODL is treated in Altcoins. Because the projects are in the first stage of their development. The history of crypto proves it, although it would be ideal if the ICO prices were maintained or at least not lose more than 50% of the price of the offer.

Really hold bitcoin is very good for us if those people sell their bitcoin now and donot more believe on the price of bitcoin then there is no doubt that these people will regret in coming future. So i think in this time those people who want to earn more money then they need to invest their capital in bitcoin and hold it for two or three months because the bull will occur very soon.

Oh man, c'mon are you kidding? Do you really have so silly questions? We hodl because we have a hope of high price in future and hope of profit. If I bought bitcoin at 1000 and price is 700, I still hodl with that hope to sell in high price, you can't decide 100% accurate moment to buy.

The point is if they sell it at loss then they will lose their investments because they were just so weak-handed who always falls in FOMO. But if they know how to handle the situation in the market and is very persistent to avoid loses then they could that bitcoin for a long time as long as for the sake of good profits.

I will hold my assets as long as possible. I don't want to lose more because the crypto price is far below the price when I started investing. at present, releasing assets is not the most appropriate solution if the crypto situation in the trading market is very bad. and releasing assets will worsen crypto conditions and make me experience huge losses.

Good question.

I hold because I'm a shit trader and almost always make the wrong decision. No doubt if I was a twitchy bugger I would've sold at $1000 thinking I was a genius and sat watching it run away.

I got into this expecting to sit and do not much until 2020. By that point I was expecting it to have started to fulfil its potential and it's certainly looking that way. Ideally I'd never need to sell but that day is still quite a way away if I want to get about and spend stuff.

You need to wait. Because all we know that bitcoin is like business investment when you rush everything all of your hardwork and capital will be loss. For those who are holding their bitcoin because they are already lost to much I thimk bitcoi  is not for them. Because they dont have any passion on what are they doing and all they want is for income but when you do bitcoin with youf heart and great strategies you will be rewarded.

In investment there will be a price movement, where we will always see a price decline and will be followed by a price increase next time. That is why we must have extensive knowledge of what we invest and be able to hold emotions, so that we can be patient waiting for rising prices that will ultimately benefit through the investment we live in. Seeing the decline in prices this year, I chose to hold back, because I believe that there will be times when a surge in price increases can give me the opportunity to sell by gaining profits according to what I have hoped for.

I believe HODLing is what I was brought here for. Even though I often sell my Bitcoin to buy irl stuff, but it doesn't mean I don't HODL. In my vision, Bitcoin is merely the same as any other currency. You sell it when you need to buy stuff, and you HOLD it when you don't have anything to buy. It doesn't necessarily mean I'd sell all my Bitcoin everytime I have something to buy tho. I use my Bitcoin whenever I don't have any fiat left in my wallet.

All in all, I HODL because I just don't need to spend it at the moment.

I chose to hold because I trust and believe its potential that it can bounce back from crash. Volatility has been its nature, instead of moaning of downturns, it's the best to take a look at the brighter side. It's the best time to take advantage to buy at low price, hold, and sell high when price gets back on track. Price fluctuation is temporary and so there's nothing to panic much about. Staying patience, positive, and determined can help us a lot in making us survive and succeed in crypto world. Don't lose hope.

Actually I do hold because I lost a lot for cashout. I am believe that the price will go up and I could get back what profit I lost before. It is good to have investment while you are waiting for recovery for not regretting this moment. For now, I do not sell or buy but earn more bitcoin through works and efforts. Then everything did go more pretty and the Bitcoin catched $19.000 and the ETH $1.430, i believed that the price will go like $50.000 and the ETH will catch $5.000 because there were many news which saying this rumors.. Everything is logical and simple: first you win and then you lose. You can not invest in the crypt all the amount of money that you have. There is one Golden rule that has helped and helps many people to preserve their assets when trading in the market: invest in crypto as much money as you are not afraid to lose.

Now my portfolio is less than half the invested price and there is no sign that the price will soon revice. This is just a wasted money. There is no need to continue to hold, I think i will sell off now to cut my losses.

I'm in a lot of losses. Almost 60% of my totally capital has down. But I still hold. Because I believe Bitcoin and altcoins price will increase very soon. Big money will come in market . I don't wanna be impatient and panic seller.

I really don't know that i loose or win.. I met with bitcoin when the price was $600, in 1 year i made my self like 1.7 BTC, and then i saw the bull market and i became a richer, i made like $55.000, i went to USA for holiday and i made shopping like crazy.. Then everything did go more pretty and the Bitcoin catched $19.000 and the ETH $1.430, i believed that the price will go like $50.000 and the ETH will catch $5.000 because there were many news which saying this rumors.. Then put all my money and i sold my car and bought BTC and ETH with the highest price.. Yes i made small fortune with cryptos and i spend like kings but now i have few coins which makes couple of thousand dollars.. So i don't know did i win or not..

Everything is logical and simple: first you win and then you lose. You can not invest in the crypt all the amount of money that you have. There is one Golden rule that has helped and helps many people to preserve their assets when trading in the market: invest in crypto as much money as you are not afraid to lose.

I agree with you, if you dare to take big risks then behind all that there is a big advantage too if you can run smoothly and successfully, the most important thing in cryptocurrency is just patience to wait.

This is not as easy as I say, because we all feel a loss this year. I experience a dilemma like you, hold or sell. it kept spinning in my head so it was very painful.
but if I look at the history of bitcoin I have the confidence to hold it back. yes whatever happens I will keep holding it until I get a profit.

Hodling a crypto coin goes beyond believing whether its price is gonna rise in the future to come. I advice people to first understand the idea and purpose behind the development of the crypto coin they are interested to invest in. Buying a particular crypto coin because you think its market value is gonna increase exponential then you are gonna be in a dilemma and confused. Hodling is all about knowing the future of a particular crypto coin.

I always cut my losses short and try to recover it in my subsequent trades. It comprehensive as compared to holding and hoping it turns out positive.

No matter how low the price of cryptocurrency goes, there will be a reversal one day. So keeping or holding your cryptocurrency in the hope for a reversal of persistent downtrend is not out of place. Note that you have not lost anything until you sell your coins at a loss.

Both statements are true to me. Strong and promising coins I’m HODL because I believe in them and that their price will rise.
But unfortunately, I have to admit that I have some coins that I don’t sell just because it no longer makes sense. These coins have fallen greatly in value.

Am hodling most of my coins especially my btc very tightly all because am very optimistic that there will soon be an end to this bear market run.  Though what we're experiencing isn't not what we all wanted and asked for but alas, the end is near.

The current market situation is the best hold option or adding funds for your investment amount, the market is very cheap and in my opinion this is the moment of investment for the biggest profit next year
Why the price is falling day by day? Any specif reason?
Though, I am holding my BTC but I wonder if it's worth holding.

The point is the same you are holding because you already lose some of your money, meaning the action is to hold and wait for the price to come up again in the market because you have the belief that the price will be good soon.

Obviously the goal is to hold only to get a high price from before, until that time I will not sell it, if I just let it go it will lose everything.

I think many of us now is holding because we know that the price in the crypto market will be move up again. Yeah it's slow to move up but we can still believe we can get what we want. For me even I lost most of my funds but still believe that market will be increase again.

We believe that the price will grow up sooner thats why we HODL.  All of us are trying to be patient for us to be able to earn a good  profit without knowing when it could be  the time of increasing again of the market price.

For me as long as you HODL and read your charts. There's still a possiblity you might cash out and be satisfied.  Volatility will always be there in the market. You just really need to have an iron gut to take it all in.     ;D ;D

Well I did lose around 75% of my money while holding it. It was kind of hard to accept because there too much uncertainty with the current status of cryptocurrency. The recent drop causes a lot of mix reactions and FUD. I am still hoping though dor the price to go up.

yes I am like you and maybe most people in this forum also agree that the reason for HODL is because they believe the price will go up and also we don't want to suffer losses. so the best solution when the market is red is HODL and be patient. the key to successful crypto investment is patience. be patient for several months or years to get greater profits.

I think we need to hold. Most of the people here believe that the price will go up soon, that is why I believe that everybody is holding because there is no other choice is it to wait or to loss. If we sell today we can really loss a lot but if we are going to hold there will be a great possibility that the price will rise and we can gain a huge amount of profit.

Believe me, i hold BTC now because it will rise again. Most people have lost faith and trust in Bitcoin because of the recent downward movement but this is not the end of Bitcoin. Bitcoin has seen more worse situations than this yet it recovered and made the all time hit of $23k.
Never be part of those who will regret later for panic selling their BTC now.

I have the same way of thinking, I already lost too much on the price dump. There's no reason to sell right now to cut my loss because I lose too much. But I always believe that the price will go up no matter what, I can hold my bitcoin assets for a months or maybe a year if the bull run doesn't happen. I only know one thing, bull run will happen anytime soon.

Many do not sell their bitcoins because they believe that the price will rise and it will be possible to earn more money, some simply do not know what will be right, sell or hold the coins. It seems to me that you can leave some of the coins for the future, and use some for trading.

I hold because I believe on the price will pump hard as it hardly dumps and also see big lose when I cash out it now in this situations. It won't also help the market lessen the supply. It is not worth to cashout now because your work is hard enough but you get low reward when there comes time that it will give high profit.

To be honest, I am not against speculation but I believe that we should give first priority to use it as a payment system. However, since Bitcoin is still in the early phase of development there is exponential growth opportunity and one can look for profit in this possibility. However, we must realise that Bitcoin is valuable today just because the early adopters decided to use their Bitcoins for payment purpose and now we should do the same in order to optimise the utility value of it.

Whether you HODL in the hope to sell when the price skyrockets, there are times one has no choice but to sell because situation such as urgent need for money can compel you to sell. I have had that experience before. I will rather leave my coin in my wallet if there are no pressing need than to do panic sale.

That's what you call cycle, not just in crypto but all facets of life is in a cycle. Its a bitter lessons to learn but we can't do anything about it because the price will simply not go on parabolic rise and will hit a snagged and bubble has been burst.

As it is in a cycle, we may have seen the tail end of the bearish trend. Sooner or later, perhaps early 2019 the price will be on the road to recovery and just maybe we will see another all-time-high in the next coming years.

Those that buy bitcoin in January and February this year are in serious loses.  Bitcoin is going to recover but getting to above $10,000 this year is not in sight.  I am holding currently with the mind that bitcoin is going to recover and makes another upwards movement that will create another high.  If I have risked capital I will still invest as there is a great hope that bitcoin is going to recover again.

hodling fiat, property or any other asset class is just as risky if no more

divorce 50~100% loss
sued, 100 + % loss
tax system change 100% loss
bank failure 100% loss
QE evaporation of buying power
shares, value can go to zero for any reason including gov policy change.
Capital controls, you wealth is pretty much locked to on location, and not transportable.

BTC.....you can't have them, take them, stop me transporting them, devalue them (ok alts can abit)

I personally don't feel that safe in fiat under any condition, just enough to have a small buffer and buy stuff.
