Title: Taxes from the crypto industry will go to combat pollution.
Post by: Dimon8 on December 06, 2018, 03:17:51 PM
Every day our planet becomes more and more polluted by human activity. And what if the advanced blockchein technology is focused on pollution control. All governments and international financial institutions that are willing to accept cryptocurrency will tax all cryptoexchanges, ICO projects, and other areas that use cryptography. These taxes are used with blockhein in projects to clean and protect the environment. Share ideas. How can this be done?

There is a problem in there and that is the institution that will make it happen, and let's face it there will be no institution that will do it out of charity alone and if there is there will always be a chance of curruption to it even if it is in a block chain.

The blockchein technology is a damn database, there is no magical technology behind it that will combat pollution.
Contrary to what scammers tell you in the ICO section, the blockchain can't transport people, grow food or make wine out of water.

Oh great, more taxes.
Taxation on pollution is not reducing pollution, it just makes the ones that afford it able to pollute as they wish.

How can this be done?

Can't and won't.

It would be nice if all the taxes from cryptocurrencies were indeed used for solving environmental issues. For now, though, I think what's more realistic is starting a charity in cryptos for this matter. It might also be a good thing to offer people choice: they can either transfer money to their government as taxes or transfer the same amount of money for environmental issues. Now, the problem is that there are various organizations and no 'world government'. How do we decide who gets to tackle these problems and receives all this money and responsibility? As for all of the taxes from cryptos going on ecology - I bet many governments will oppose this idea, because they don't want to be deprived of new potential incoming funds.

It can't be done. No one will accept that billions of dollars in tax are directed to one thing only. The government have to be responsible with tax funds and divide them in a way that people deem to be appropriate. For some people that might be entirely in to protecting the environment but for others it would be none at all.

This mentality is a such a hindrance to crypto in general. I've been called an idiot on this forum for suggesting that perhaps every industry in the world doesn't have a requirement for blockchain by some users who thought that blockchain will revolutionize literally every industry. There are too many people just spewing nonsense like "increase transparency", "increase efficiency" and "decrease corruption", without offering a single technical detail as to how they plan to achieve all these things. "Focus blockchain on pollution control" doesn't even make sense as a sentence I'm afraid, OP. Blockchain is just a ledger, nothing more. You might as well be saying "Let's focus the Excel Spreadsheets on curing cancer".

To answer the wider point, it's never going to happen. We have the technology and the tax money as it is to protect the environment and deal with pollution. Take the US budget for this fiscal year, as an example (https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/budget-fy2019.pdf). The Environmental Protection Agency was handed a 34% cut in funding, receiving a total of $5.4 billion. Meanwhile the Department of Defense was handed a 13% increase for a total of a whopping $686 billion, 127 times higher than the EPA. The US spends more on defense then the next 10 countries combined. The US could easily start switching to green energy and cutting emissions massively, if there was the political will for it. There isn't. Politicians are bought by big polluters. If and when we reach a point where crypto is consistently taxed, that tax money will follow party lines, as does all tax money.

Of course they will tax, why will they give you possibility to use alternative method and be tax free in some subjects. Also if you see, a lot of things were available in past but once they become abused, governments take control on it, same happens on bitcoin and on altcoins too, they see it's becoming popular, more and more people are moving on it, this isn't what government wants. If situation and users of bitcoib would be like it was in 2010, then government wouldn't care about it.

There is absolutely nothing we can do. Taxes and its usage are the income of the government and they are the supreme authority on what needs to be done with it. So we don't have any control over it.

Definitely we can start expressing our intent through various channels so that it reaches to the highest level of the government, but at the end of the day it's their call to decide. No doubt it is a noble thought but not within our control.

There are many logical error in your opener post:

Taxes from the crypto industry will go to combat pollution.
Taxes usually collected as a "revenue" for the government budget. It's up to them to allocate the funds.

And what if the advanced blockchein technology is focused on pollution control. All governments and international financial institutions that are willing to accept cryptocurrency will tax all cryptoexchanges, ICO projects, and other areas that use cryptography.
So if a blockchain technology is used for pollution control, then government would accept all other cryptocurrency? Logical error #1
What's the connection between blockchain for pollution control and taxation? Logical error #2

You need to study more about blockchain technology!

I can tell OP is idealistic and wants blockchain technology to solve a real and serious problem....but environmental protection won't be accomplished by a tax on crypto.  Governments already have the power to alleviate the problem through legislation and law enforcement--it isn't a lack of funds that's keeping the world from being polluted, and governments could tax people all they want, but it just isn't going to help anything.

This is "ICO thinking" in my opinion, that is, trying to crowbar bitcoin/blockchain tech into problems that need solving but where crypto won't help to solve the problem at all.  If there really is a problem that anything crypto-related can solve, it'll be adopted pretty quickly.  I haven't really seen that happen yet.

Every day our planet becomes more and more polluted by human activity.

You mean greedy people, right? because if you do statistic you will realize that the biggest pollutants are companies whose owners of these companies are political or have the politicians in their payroll.

this is pollution in very poor countries:

https://photo-cdn.urdupoint.com/media/2018/02/_3/730x425/pic_1519830123.jpg

and this is pollution in the very rich countries:

https://allthatsinteresting.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/industrial-pollution.jpg

the trash can be easily removed, it depends only on the people, but in the case of the rich countries, the history is very different. if rich countries want combat pollution, will be very high costs, because many of these industries their owners are politicians or people with great influences in politics and as you may already know, in one country there are several political parties and each political party has its own objectives

All governments and international financial institutions that are willing to accept cryptocurrency will tax all cryptoexchanges, ICO projects, and other areas that use cryptography.

and do you really think they will take this money to solve environmental pollution? we have to be clear: the problem is not lack of money, the problem is unwillingness to solve the problem and this is due to the fault of the politicians who live in constant competition.

These taxes are used with blockhein in projects to clean and protect the environment.

the politicians are going to take this tax to party, buy luxury aircrafts and pay some corrupt and damn African politician

How can this be done?

the solution is very simple: stop voting for corrupt politicians

You can only tax everything to a certain extent before people go out and literally start revolting.
Look at France for God's sake. It's already the country with the highest tax pressure in Europe and now they're taxing gasoline even more.

Want people to opt for more environmentally friendly solutions? Maybe start by giving tax-breaks for those purchases, instead of overly taxing the polluting alternatives.

This has nothing to do with blockchain whatsoever, you've just been drinking the ICO kool-aid.

Don't get me wrong but I don't know if you're trolling or what. Why pollution control? Is this a priority? I mean there's a lot of things like food and water and every basic need that people need in order to survived, so I guess government should focus on this one. I don't think that this idea can come to fruition each country has its own problem and I'm sure that others won't agree taxes they got from exchanges or even crypto traders to deal with pollution.

Not "will", you are talking about something you think should be done however the topic name has WILL in it which means there was some sort of news that talk about how a government made a decision on making pollution stop with the money funded from the taxes of crypto industry.

This is more like "taxes SHOULD be used" not WILL go to. I don't understand why people make these kind of false claims, yeah you get the click and we are all here trying to understand which country really wants to stop pollution and use crypto money as funding but here we are with no link in sight and no news that shows which country does that.

I feel like USA could be one of the first ones to do that, use crypto taxes for something crypto related so you give back to the community.

There are already pretty big tax reductions on a lot of renewable energy. For example the Solar Tax Credit that allows people to deduct 30% of the cost of installing solar energy from their tax liability. The problem is that renewable energy is just still not close to comparing to non-environmentally friendly solutions in terms of cost efficiency and that's what people care about. Is it for the government to solve or is it for the private sector to make better renewable/clean energy solutions?

Any taxes that governments are able to get out of this market are going to be spent in whatever they want, I do not know how it works in your country but in the country in which I live we not get to choose how the government spends the taxes that they get out of you, it is an interesting proposal to use the taxes that they could get out of cryptocurrencies to help the planet but most likely that is not going to happen.

It's not really up to the crypto industry, or exchanges to enforce this though.

Most regulated crypto businesses already do pay tax, whether it is income tax, or corporate tax. But combating certain problems in the economy or the environment isn't as simple as paying taxes. Who is actually going to take the money, and spend it responsibly?

That's where the government's role come in, and unfortunately, there is absolutely no guarantee that taxes collected by the crypto industry is going to combating pollution, building new schools, or whatnot, especially in third world, corrupt countries. That's just the reality, unfortunately.

The government and it institutions that are scheduled with the responsibility of taking care of the environment are not doing the work effectively and that is why pollution in high in our environment and this is as a result of humans activities. Because cryptocurrency is a global currency which tax revenue is to be used to pursue global program and not to be use by one country alone cause is crypto is taxed and use for environmental cleansing is will benefit only the country of host alone.

still, taxes in all fields actually do not provide any solution in the long term, it only lasts within 1-5 years, then problems will continue to emerge, such as the current economy. In crypto it should be completely free of taxes or fees because that is the reason for the blockchain

i guess when the tax are collected with a cryptocurrency that can being more efficiency and be more environtment friendly and thats how when going to high speed process and also getting all recorded making the delivery process getting easier but it still it have a much time until the development of blockchain itself getting compelet and can implement into that thing

You raised a valid point. But when you talk about cryptocurrency taxing, there are factors to consider such as : the feasibility of the suggestion.
We all know cryptocurrency has a decentralized structure and no known organized regulatory body.....how will the tax be implemented then?

there are a few steps before that happens in my country. at present government has not provided a legalization of cryptocurrency, so there is no tax assessment that can be collected. but if that happens, I really support it

Governments are surely going to try to tax cryptocurrencies, that is something that we are already seeing but what do they plan to do with that money is entirely something else, governments are always fighting any way in which the citizens could have some control over them and the taxes they could collect from cryptocurrencies are not going to be an exception.

Controlling Pollution
In December 1997, 160 nations meeting in Kyoto, Japan agreed to cut back emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. While ratified by only a very small number of countries so far, the "Kyoto Protocol" calls for industrial countries to reduce their average emissions during 2008-12 to about 5 percent below 1990 levels. Some countries pledged to go further: the European Union set an 8 percent target, while the Unites States and Japan agreed to cut emissions by 7 and 6 percent, respectively. The Protocol allows some industrial countries to modestly increase their emissions in the near term, while special terms apply to members of the former Soviet Union. Since developing countries face potential technical and economic constraints, the Protocol does not oblige them to cut back their emissions.

Because the proposed targets are likely to impose large costs on the global economy, the Kyoto agreement sets the stage for long and complex discussions at the national and international levels. A key issue is how these costs will be shared among countries. While recent public opinion polls show greater concern about climate change and some willingness to share burdens to curb greenhouse gas emissions, recent events in energy markets provide evidence that the public is unwilling to accept significant hikes in energy prices or other costs. If countries prove unwilling to ratify the Kyoto Protocol in its present form, however, the discussions will undoubtedly continue.

Look whats happening in France about fuel taxes, something similar will happen when cryptocurrencies adoption comes to life and if they want to raise taxes above moderate heights.

That's inevitable. I say that because in every growing industry or market alike, government entities would try to capitalize on it by either imposing taxes on it to add revenue, if not, try to control it in some way whether indirect or direct in order to have some leverage or advantage to it for future use. Although the cryptocurrency market is an up and down market, it can still yield good capital and profit if you see the bigger picture. Therefore, by imposing taxes, a government gets to control how the market goes in their localities.
