Title: Hacked Exchanges since 2011
Post by: VB1001 on December 29, 2018, 12:28:05 PM
- List of Hacked Exchanges, since 2011:

I would like to share this list of hacked exchanges, after viewing the data, consider how and where you store your Bitcoins.
Several types of scams appear in different sources of news, theft or loss of BTC at the individual level.
I prefer to focus on the hacking of exchanges which is what affects us all, but due to the importance of some Bitcoin thefts outside the exchanges, I will include the most important.
If someone wants to publish their personal experience with any of these unpleasant situations, feel free to do so.

Since 2011 have stolen millions of dollars from exchanges, account theft, security breaches, phishing, some recovered others filed for bankruptcy. The solution adopted by governments to improve security is to implement more stringent and regulatory policies.

- This is a list exchanges hacked 2011/2018, I hope I do not have to update this year.
- 2019 has been worse than the previous year.

2020 I have updated some data and renewed the presentation of the incidents of the exchanges, I have more references obtained from several sources, once contrasted with mine they give a wider result of exchanges that have suffered some type of attack, so the presentation is annual to have a more specific vision of each year.

The sources are basically online portals and social networks that warn about hacked exchange, once verified it is included in the corresponding list of the year.

The amount of stolen Bitcoins is very high, it's a lot of money, some advices, do not enter into paranoid mode, just follow common sense:

  • How to save your Bitcoin

- Last Updated official OS + Antivirus
- Not download movies..., videos, games, compromised pages...
- Clear browser cache.
- Everything connected by cable, outside wireless keyboard, wireless mouse and wifi printer.
- Activate 2FA + Backup (Exchange).

  • Wallets

- Software: Bitcoin Core, download in official page, encrypt wallet.dat + backup.
- Hardware: Buy in manufacturer's page, Trezor, Ledger, Keepkey, just install manufacturer firmware updates.
- Paper: Paper Walet generate the offline address.
- Cryptosteel: backup private key or seed.
- All backups outside of the computer.

  • Phishing

This is very bad, to here that exchanges are been hack by some set guy it very sad. However, my view by the exchanges hack is that most time that this happen some set of people that have access to the data base of the exchanges link those guys that hack the exchanges. Let everybody be careful this coming new year. Best of luck to all traders.

Code:
Exchange  	Year        Amount / Month

Poloniex    2014 <      64.000 $ March
Damn. I did not expect that Poloniex was a victim of hacking. I just find out that Poloniex was hacked in 2014 and suffered a loss of $64K from you.

After viewing the data, consider how and where you store your Bitcoins.
I have never stored my assets on an exchange. Because I realized that cybercrime is in anywhere and can attack anyone.
Before that happened to me, I anticipate it by buying Trezor hardware wallet and storing Bitcoin within it. Perhaps, the right way to keep Bitcoin safe is storing Bitcoin on hardware wallet like trezor and or ledger.

2018 is really a history itself. Not because it is about to end but because of the endless mischief that happens all throughout the year.

Great profits, I wonder why you share that info  ??? What's the point LOL

I'm sure there are plenty more small hacks of major exchanges and hacks on small lesser known exchanges that go unreported. There are also probably quite a few scams in there that are reported as hacks - BitGrail for example. I haven't followed the story in several months, but last I checked it seemed like the owner exit scammed with millions of dollars worth of Nano, said that he had been "hacked" to try to avoid the law, and there was a class action lawsuit against him.

Still, the total of your listed hacks comes to over $1.3 billion, and so the real value is likely to be even higher than that. The only coins that you should store on an exchange are coins you are actively trading. Anything you are not trading, or buying to hold, should be immediately transferred out to a private (non-web) wallet.

As daytrader im affected a lot because i have to store my coins on exchange. I take a risk and withdrawing profit is a way to minimalize this risk. Thats why i shared this. And you can't say that this is great profit because i didnt say how often i'm withdrawing my profit. I only said that btc amount is indicator to withdraw. It might be once a year or once a day :)

The real scary part is how the numbers increased like crazy at the end there. I mean we all remember when cryptsy and mt.gox got hacked and lost a bunch of bitcoins (well "hacked" but I think they have it) but in the end if you look just 2018 hacked places and how much they were hacked, it is just double the rest in on year probably.

It is really getting out of hand because hackers probably realized that they are literally taking money governments are not caring about so its getting easier for them to steal bitcoin, it would be a lot harder and riskier if they hacked people to get dollars but hacking for bitcoin is better for them.

About 800 million dollars! was stolen this year, that is really crazy to think someone has that much crypto currencies as a person (or a group) and they got it scott free without any punishment.

Its not the only reason why they are stealing bitcoins. Its easier for them because crypto exchanges has weaker security, U can easily make them disappear  - (transfer to new exchange, buy monero (private untrackable coin than even FBI wasnt able to track) for it, tranfer to monero wallet, to next monero wallet, back to another exchange, sell for bitcoin, withdraw bitcoins). And you have bitcoins on your wallet that noone know from where they are. While stealing USD from bank account you need to transfer them to your bank account where you gave ID to create it (I didnt see anywhere bank that didnt need ID to create account).
It is also easy to steel bitcoin from detail users because lots of them dont know the technology, how to store or even transfer coins. I heard that more than 10% airdrop participants give in forms etherum private key instead of public  ... lol ... and then they loose coins and say "i was hacked".

People in the know should give a bit more information about each individual hack if they know some background. People may learn from it.

For instance the $500 million Coincheck hack was down to the exchange operators keeping ALL of the stolen funds in a hot wallet. Literally none was elsewhere.

XEM was the currency stolen. XEM has multi sig actually built into its blockchain. It costs nothing, it's a piece of piss to implement, it would've made this hack impossible, yet they chose not to do it. Even if they couldn't be arsed to do that, had they spent $100 on one Trezor this hack would not have been possible.

That's the calibre of people operating exchanges.

80% of the money stolen was their own. The customers got paid back.

And folks should be made aware of Bter. That is now Gate.io. Bter claimed to have had their hosting compromised and then resolved to pay back customers the 7000 or so BTC nicked with some sort of token funded through trading fees. They eventually got bored of that, gave up and were miraculously reborn as gate.io. Presumably the same people are still running it.

Was binance hacked? I remember that there was some doubt as to what had actually happened. But many consider that it had been hacked and some users lost a lot of money. There was Syscoin, too.

Whoa! I didn't know that Coincheck was the first one to go on the top list of biggest stolen cryptocurrency in the world and now MtGox is in the second place. Some of these exchanges has a very low security of storing their tokens on a secure wallet. That's why it is too easy to hack most of them. I wonder what would the thief could do to that stolen tokens if it is being listed on the watch list.

When it comes to convenience and volume, ie greed, people are only too happy to throw their doubts away.

Gox was still recommended on the main Bitcoin sites when I first got properly interested in 2013. I spent five minutes researching it - hacked before, passwords revealed in the browser address bar, shutdowns and rollbacks, unregulated in a country thousands of miles from me, who's the guy on the beach ball? - and I went straight to Localbitcoins instead.

Mt. Gox is a popular exchange before, some insinuating that  its an inside job. Exchanges are target of hackers nowadays since it handles bigger volumes. Investment on online security is a must for this exchanges so that it can win trusts from its clients.

From all that list it means someone who said if we put our money on exchanger, that means we not have control for it anymore. Maybe that is what people want to said, maybe it is bad if we put all our money in exchanger.

Poloniex was a textbook example of how to proceed.

The owner at the time (Tristan) sent out messages explaining the situation. The lost coin for each user was shown in the dashboards, but not accessable. Eventual repayment was promised, and this was done in small increments, as and when profits allowed. Not sure, but I think the total was greater than the 64k quoted.

Thus, the exchange continued to trade and was solvent, whilst establishing a trustworthy reputation..

I’m really surprised to see that some exchanges are showing up more than twice on the list 😣🤥. So they get hacked and they never bother to check on how it all happened and also fixing their website and increasing their security. This is why anyone shouldn’t store their coins on exchanges,, they are a big risk. Really bad.

Definitely, it can grow even more in the next coming years. Those exchanges really need to understand that hackers are like always one step of the game. So exchanges really need to tighten up otherwise every hackers will find some exploit and then BOOM, traders money is gone in an instant. Although it's good to know that hackers do lost the game last year as well.  ;D

You should add to the list the 26,000 btc seized by the FBI to skillroad. I know wasn't a hack and wasn't an exchanger, but at the end looks like the same,  :P

By the way, thanks to adding the amount in btc, now the list looks awesome, and as i told you in the Spanish thread, Mt.Gox is in the first place, we have a winner!

Nice thread VB1001.

It will be very interesting to know more about those hacks coming from users directly or indirectly affected.

While not exactly a hack... I got affected by the MtGOX one. I say it was not exactly a hack because it was a combination of negligence and several different incidents along many years, being negligence probably the main factor.

Five years later, I am waiting to recover some from the civil rehabilitation. It is estimated that it will be around 20-25% of my bitcoins.

The reasons I considered it was worth the risk to use Mtgox are the following:

- I was a very high frequency day trader at that time that took advantage of the violent volatility of that times and the delay (a few seconds) in the "propagation" between different exchanges.

- I had almost all of my BTC on exchanges because I was trading with it all. Didn't really had that much anyways.

- I considered having it all on a single exchange was too high of a risk (true) so instead of having it all on Bitstamp I had an almost equal amount on Mtgox too.

- I was of the idea that if something happened to Mtgox (being more or less the main exchange) Bitcoin would be so severely impacted that the less of the problem would be to lose my Bitcoins there. While that made some sense I probably overestimated the impact or underestimated the bitcoin capacity to recover from it.

So it is not that I didn't knew the risks... It's just that I considered at the time that it was a reasonable risk to assume.

When the exchange went belly up (but trading kept running with prices going really low) I even did a final bet and sent a deposit of fiat.

The "bet" was that if I could buy there at those extremely low prices it would compensate the possible loss and otherwise I could probably recover that fiat because it would be a fraud to touch it if the exchange was already bankrupt.

It seemed to me it was a reasonable asymmetrical bet to do.

The problem is that it was just a couple of days before MtGOX stopped trading altogether so my transfer was never reflected in my balance.

I could never rescue the transfer. I didn't even claim it from the bankruptcy trustee because I thought, not being reflected in the balance, it could lower the chance of my main claim (the bitcoins) to be approved.

It's a pity because in the end I could have probably recovered the full fiat amount plus interests.

Now I think I maybe should have claimed it... but probably it wouldn't have been approved anyways... So it is not a big regret.

The claim over my BTC balance was approved.

Anyone in the same situation claimed those last minute fiat deposits not reflected in the balance? Was your claim approved or rejected? Would like to know.

Nowadays my trading activity has been greatly reduced and I only have around 10% of my total stash in exchanges. All the rest is in a combination of hardware wallets.

There's risk, and then there's... I'm not totally sure if there's a word for this particular example.

I remember the brewing disbelief at the time and more than a few people claiming it was 'too big to fail'. If only.

Yeah, I had heard about TheKoziTwo doing that lol

No, IIRC in the end I only sent like $800 (which could have bought me another 5 or 6 BTC). Considered sending (not much) more but finally decided to go for an amount I could perfectly (a bit annoying as each and every lost) see gone. I saw an "opportunity" and tried to catch it.

Who knows maybe for the TheKoziTwo that amount was the equivalent of the $800 for me.

I still think it was a reasonable bet to make with the information I had at that moment. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

P.S.: Did TheKoziTwo had his claim approved? Considering the amount I am sure he at least claimed and fight for it to be recognised.

P.S.2: I see it was an OkPay transfer so maybe:

- He could claim it to OkPay.
- or it was reflected in MtGox balance, in which case he will probably recover the full ammount plus a nice yearly 6% interest (over five fucking years!)
- or maybe he even had time to buy BTC at those lower prices and even at 20-25% he made a good chunk.

So maybe in this case "being that guy" is not that bad in the end ;)

It would be interesting to see a division into the types of events which accompanied these 'hacks', and whether or not the exchanges survived, or the customers ever recovered their money.

I have lost amounts in Cryptsy, Cryptorush, Mintpal (and a few others) each of which were a total write off. From some others I managed to extract most of my funds but had to trade between coins to get withdrawals through. Trading between coins is not my aim as I was simply investing and holding. I ended up with a lot more alts, which I didn't bother to exchange back to BTC.

Bitcoinica and Poloniex refunded all clients.

I think there a quite a few to add the the op list.

One great inconvenience for traders is not being able to access any records from the lost exchanges.

The process is to find the correct information, web, forums, social media, check it and verify it.
It's true not all exchanges hacked, but all the information of dates, years, amount stolen and currency type of a pirated exchange have differences, in some web pages there is a quantity and in another the data are different.
The interesting thing is to have quantities and dates of stolen BTCs sufficiently contrasted, to offer real information.

Jesus christ according to the infographic shared on coindesk it shows 1.5 billion dollars lost so far! That is 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS.

Exchanges really need to up their security measures by a whole lot but the problem with hackers is that no matter what you do to prevent they will find a new way, if you defend that they will move onto a new way, they will not stop inventing a new way to hack into the exchanges even though exchanges cover all possible corners.

865 million of that (more than half) was in 2018, we saw how much increase there was in interest to crypto in 2017 which lead to a lot more new exchanges and some of that started out very quickly to gather the money from the hype and didn't finish the website with quality so they got hacked. Its really a shame all that money went to hackers instead of people who really needed it.

Binance is less than two years old. People know effectively nothing about how it's run or its procedures. Just because it's big, does not make it 'good' or trustworthy. Act accordingly.

How do you know? Coinbase has so many coins, that a minor loss of funds due to a hack wouldn't even be missed with how the far majority of the people use them as long term storage because they assume it's safe and 'insured'.

The very fact that their shareholders and customers wouldn't be impressed if something like that ever happened, makes it way more likely to have Coinbase not publicly share that they have been hacked and coins were lost.

The only way for anyone to notice that they don't have enough coins to have every user/customer withdraw, is to have everyone withdraw at the same time, which won't ever happen so they are safe basically for ever.

The case of the exchange of hacking is an extraordinary event, it is because the incident greatly affected the development of cryptocurrencies. The fact is that when a hack action occurs, the price of cryptocurrencies automatically decreases, this is the impact of the many people who feel worried when they have digital assets. Hopefully in the next year things will be much more, security features must be improved and we must be smart in choosing exchanges that have the best reputation level.

The only way for anyone to notice that they don't have enough coins to have every user/customer withdraw, is to have everyone withdraw at the same time, which won't ever happen so they are safe basically for ever.

Even back in December, when Coinbase's cold storage addresses were being emptied and all the funds moved around (to new cold storage, as it turns out), all the FUD and panic posts on here and reddit were about this being a whale moving their coins to an exchange in preparation to dump them, even though that was provably not the case. I didn't see a single post raising the possibility of "could this mean Coinbase has been hacked?". So even when their cold storage of 600k empties, people don't even think about them being hacked. No one is going to notice if they lost a few hundred or even a few thousand BTC in a small hack, and as you say, they definitely wouldn't advertise it.

Although maybe if there was a small public hack, it might wake some people up enough for them to actually withdraw their coins and store them securely, instead of trusting a random third party.

People overestimate coinbase. Maybe they also think that their coins are guaranteed like a government guarantees bank deposits.
When you compare with IRL there is not much difference. People know that their bank is in agony but they are not worried, and they're far to think to participate in a bank run.

of the many exchangers that were hit by hacking in 2017 was the year that had the least number of hacking crimes. and 2018 is the year with the most volume of assets hit by hacking
this is proof that exchange is very easy to hack. and it's time for us to secure your assets and not use exchange as a place to save. move assets to a safer wallet. Hardware wallet may be the best option.

Thanks for making this thread, I thought the biggest hack was Mt.Gox which is the biggest hack of all time but I'm surprise now it was Coincheck . Very informative thread, please keep this thread updated so you can share the necessary information on a timely manner.

Hopefully Binance will remain safe because there are a lot of traders like me that are using this exchange, normally hackers will target big exchanges.

This is the first time I've heard an exchange Bitcoinica and I find it funny that people still trust it after 2 hack incidents in that year. And also I don't believe that everything on list are hacked because I was a user of Bitgrail and I'm positively sure that the exchange are the ones behind and stole it before nano got dump very hard.

That's why it's important for the exchanges to prevent this hacking because it's their reputation at stake, and with the big competition in the market, they might be surprise that people are already transferring to another exchange. For exchanges, it's a profitable business but it's the reputation is their capital to continue to progressively exist, and they have to take care of it by improving their internal control.

Any exchange hacks is really always been a bad news on the entire community. This can really create a panic which would drive the entire market to dip down the prices again.
Sorry for those users who are being affected with this.Luckily i did able to pull out my funds with Cryptopia a long time ago when i do observed that they are gradually having lots of wallet maintenances.

  • Phishing

- Not accept links, mails, social networks to exchange, update wallets or firmware.
- Attention to web addresses and domain extension.
Securing our coins is relatively easy but many do not want to believe that they will get hacked, they think they are safe just because they think they have never being hacked and then when they get hacked they regret that they did not took precautions that could have protected their coins for almost no cost or in the case of hardware wallets for an affordable price.

Anyone know the name of that Polish exchange that didn't really get hacked but for some reason they kept all the bitcoins on their site in a wallet.dat file which they hosted on an AWS and somebody accidentally erased the virtual machine and they learn't the hard way to keep a backup on hand.

I think what happened was another exchange, might of been MtGox ended up covering the deposits and took over their exchange. This was sometime in 2011 or 2012 or so.

I opened a thread a few months back with a study on the Exchanges's security. They're far to be "safe" they have a lot of things to do to protect its users. Some aren't even protected for basics points.
People are learning the lesson (often too late) we keep repeating over and over again. An exchange isn't the right place to store your coins, store the minimum

Seriously it is so weird that even before this post got to a lot of messages we had another hacking. I mean what does these websites do for security ? I mean I know hackers are getting better and better everyday and whenever you defend some way of hacking they find another way of hacking but you really need to consider cold wallet as a big number versus hot wallet.

Even bitcointalk got hacked at one point through the avatars we had, think about how canny you had to be at hacking to figure out how to hack someone from your avatar. Hence, I understand difficulty of not getting hacked but even if hacking is unavoidable than find a way to minimize the losses in a hacking attempt, just protect as much as you can while giving them something to say they hacked it. That way they will have some small hot wallet amount whereas you protect most of the coins.

That's what we afraid of. The hackers for sure will dump the coins they have someday which can impact the price movement if the number is huge enough. Frankly, idk why exchanges look so weak even though there are already several bad examples from the past.

There will be an impact but it's not huge for sure, cryptopia is not a big exchange so this will not significantly affect investors in the entire crypto world.
Frankly, idk why exchanges look so weak even though there are already several bad examples from the past.
Small exchanges are most likely susceptible to hacking because their system is weak, and that's the reason why they did not improve despite existing already in the market. I also have deposit on that site but I don't put a lot as I know someday things like this might happen.

With this news, it's a lesson for everyone not to trust our money to small exchange, instead put it on big exchanges as they have better security.

You talking about Bitomat?

Quote
On 26 July 2011 at about 11:00 PM, I noticed that bitcoin server was out of resources and I had to increase RAM. As a result of this operation, the virtual machine was deleted and all data lost, including bitcoin wallet and its backups.

I have established that data was lost because settings of the virtual machine were changed, although I didn’t change them myself. Amazon Web Services Company, which hosts our servers, says that the cleared machine has been set up to be irretrievably destroyed (including the data on the disks) at the shutdown.

I’m still trying to establish who has changed the settings and whether I will be able to recover the lost data. Unfortunately cooperation with Amazon Web Services is very difficult. As soon as I realized that my virtual machine was lost I have ordered AWS premium support, talked to the manager and asked for securing of the disk data. So far, without success.

https://siliconangle.com/2011/08/01/third-largest-bitcoin-exchange-bitomat-lost-their-wallet-over-17000-bitcoins-missing/

I think what happened was another exchange, might of been MtGox ended up covering the deposits and took over their exchange. This was sometime in 2011 or 2012 or so.

And yes you're right, it was later acquired by Mt. Gox less than a month after that incident in 2011, crazy times.

Easier said than done. Smaller exchanges list all the shitcoins larger exchanges don't want to list, so there is always an incentive for people to keep using smaller exchanges, shady or not.

If you also add that larger exchanges will more and more subject their users to KYC/AML requirements, people will have even more incentive to use smaller exchanges, because they don't ask for personal information.

History tells us that after so many hacks and inside jobs, people here will keep making the same mistakes over and over again. It's greed that rules here, which we have to accept unfortunately....

This information is from 6 months ago, it only looks like more FUD, but there is something that I do not like.

https://i.imgur.com/hiN1rAZ.png

This does not give confidence, in the query page you can know if your data is included in the list...

On the page you can check your information.
Do not verify the email address, the page can save your address in the database as active, then the hackers start working.
Change your passwords, use different passwords for each important exchange or service.

Remember to change the passwords in x time.

Most of the exchanges site who are hacked by the hacker got millions dollars and for sure they already converted it to the fiat and maybe that is also cause of dump of the bitcoin price in the year of 2018 and this year 2019 came.  I hope no more exchanges site who hack by the hacker so those funds will be use in good way. Money is hard to earn and I hope hacker will die.

Liqui Crypto Exchange, close, withdraw your coins quickly !!!

How To Withdraw Yor Money

Now, the remaining users will have a total of 30 days to withdraw their assets from the company. While the company does not affirm that the users will lose the money forever after the deadline, it is clear that the chance of this happening is big.

If you take too long, you might still have a small shot of getting your money back, but there is no guarantee of that as the company will shut its site and stop taking care of the money.

We are going to close the year. I would like to share this list of pirated exchanges. After viewing the data, consider how and where you store your Bitcoins.

Since 2011 have stolen millions of dollars from exchanges, account theft, security breaches, phishing, some recovered others filed for bankruptcy. The solution adopted by governments to improve security is to implement more stringent and regulatory policies.

This is a list exchanges hacked 2011/2018, I hope I do not have to update this year.

No exchanges meaning no activity, no activity no income. Exchanges have powerful system and smart people to solve their problems, let's hope they can fix their problems.

I did receive email from them, saying this one:

Dear Users,

Recently, we were happy to announce the change in our policies. We gave you the right to decide whether you want to be with us in our Crypto Exchange journey by accepting the changes.

Much to our regret, after this step Liqui is no longer able to provide liquidity for the Users left. We also do not see any economic point in providing you with our services.

However, we do not want to return to where we were a month ago. Hence, we decided to close all accounts and stop providing our services. It broke our hearts to do that.

You will be able to withdraw your Digital Assets through our website within 30 days after this message was sent. If you did not withdraw delisted Digital Assets since we announced changes in our policies, you will also have another 30 days from the date this message is sent.

After 30 days we cannot guarantee that we will be maintaining our website. In this case, all withdrawals will be processed through our support @liqui.freshdesk.com until the last user store his assets with us. Note that our Terms of Use will apply until you have your more than zero balance in our wallets. If we do not provide services we cannot store your assets for free, so the fee will apply if you fail to withdraw in accordance with our Terms of Use.

We may be back soon. However, that depends on the market which has significantly changed since 2017.

We do not know what else to say but say thank you for supporting the cryptocurrency community and your faith in us.

We want to finish this message by the phrase of Marianne Williamson - "Every ending is a new beginning. Through the grace of God, we can always start again."

With this line

"We may be back soon. However, that depends on the market which has significantly changed since 2017. "

They are heavily affected with the market condition.Good thing that they do leave this industry without any issues like hacking or loss of funds with its users.
They announce or give out warning to remove funds immediately.

Unfortunately, Quadrigacx is generating all kinds of doubts, customers can not make withdrawals, everything is blocked.

Canadian Cryptocurrency Exchange QuadrigaCX Files for Creditor Protection in Nova Scotia

Further complicating the exchange’s situation is the apparent death of its founder, Gerry Cotten. Following an announcement of Cotten’s passing, some users asked for proof of death, while one even posited the theory that the exchange could not access the assets in cold storage, as the keys were only known to Cotten.

QuadrigaCX Owes Customers $190 Million, Court Filing Shows

As of Jan. 31, 2019, there were roughly 115,000 users with balances signed up on the exchange, with $70 million CAD in fiat and $180 million CAD in crypto owed overall, according to the filing.

The exchange holds roughly 26,500 bitcoin ($92.3 million USD), 11,000 bitcoin cash ($1.3 million), 11,000 bitcoin cash SV ($707,000), 35,000 bitcoin gold ($352,000), nearly 200,000 litecoin ($6.5 million) and about 430,000 ether ($46 million), totaling $147 million, according to the affidavit.

Many more exchanges that are been fallen because of the hackers. It is a information that we should always remember when we are picking an exchange. We will lose our money if we pick exchange that have low security. There are now only few exchange that are trusted and have good reputation from the community.

Can anyone tell us why we have never, ever seen gambling sites hacked? Some of them must handle similar volumes to decently sized exchanges. I don't think I've ever heard of one single case of a gambling site being drained of funds.

  • Bitpay
  • Bitstamp
  • Poloniex
  • Shapeshift

The most important thing to find the information has been to check the data in many pages, online newspapers, social networks, forums and see that all the numbers, dates of the hacking are the same, to ensure that they are true.

Coinlab’s Mt.Gox Claim Jumps From $75m to $16 Billion, Freezing Restitution

Evidence has recently come out that CoinLab, former business partner of the infamous Mt.Gox bitcoin exchange, has increased the amount of a years old lawsuit claim against the exchange from $75 million to an astonishing $16 billion making it ever more unlikely that burned former Mt.Gox users will ever get their money back.

CoinLab’s $75 million claim - later increased to $150 million - was already holding up repayment as it was. The new claim of $16 billion has come as a complete shock.

These things are getting out of hand and since bitcoin is something untraceable for someone who knows what they are doing, there is really no way of knowing who stole what. Hence the hacks will continue, when someone hacks a fiat thing usually you can trace the money somehow even when its cash you can trace the numbers on the cash.

Still, when it is crypto its really difficult since there are bitcoin mixers and all that which helps the hackers get the bitcoin to their wallet without leading anyone to their cove. I doubt we will have an end to this hacking thing, I don't think there is a way to actually stop hackers, no matter what kind of protection you make against them they will find a new and better way to hack the websites and exchanges to get the money from them.

The list of hacked exchanges remind me that I never should store my coins on exchanges.
Only send them to exchanges to sell at the right time to take profits.
After sell orders filled all, I should (I actually usually do this) withdraw all money to my own wallet.
I strongly think that it is much safer approach, even the Binance CEO stated that he suggested to store coins/ money on prestigious exchanges.

That's why saving our asset into exchanges is bad idea, exchanges is the right place to buy/ sell ( exchanges ) only not for saving. This time only wallet is the safest place to protect our asset from hack, as long never share device/ network and always check address link before clicking your asset will safe, trust me.

It is a very interesting list, and it is a picture that I consider to be a summary of the events that have occurred since today. Especially if you need to comment on Mt. As a Binance user, it was very pleasing for me not to see the name of the Binance Exchange in the list. Of course we do not know what will happen in the future, but one day I wonder if it will be mentioned in the list of the Binance stock market. On the other hand, to mention the amounts, we can see that very serious figures have been stolen.

Decentralized exchange is one of the solution of this problem, and just now Binance already create one, hopely this exchange will be better and have the same feature like centralized exchange.  And if decentralized exchange provide the same feature and more secure, so all trader will prefer to choose that one.

You need to remember the story of etherdelta which is also a decentralized exchange.

But the fact is decentralized exchange can't be working as same as centralized one since there is not much profits for the creator or decentralized exchange where in centralized they can make millions in year.

Thank you for the list. Based on OP's list, there's must be an exchange that got hacked every year. Decentralized exchange may be more secure than the centralized exchange but the volume there is lower than the centralized. For a daytrader, it much more convenient to store their crypto in exchange but on the other hand, storing crypto in exchange is not that safe.

I think it is the combination of hardware wallet and non-custodial exchange that can solve the issue up to a level.

List of top non-custodial exchanges:
  • Changelly
  • CoinSwitch
  • ShapeShift
  • EverCoin

Now a days it is equally important to keep in mind that sharing KYC documents is risky. As KYC documents are also sold after the hack.

Have those who have been in it never learned about the importance of security exchange that must be truly fulfilled? very sad for victims of hacking the exchange above.

I remembered when I was a newbie here, Mt. Gox was the first one of the big exchange on which I had been heard that has been hacked. Actually, when this things was broadcast here it is a big news here in crypto industry.  And aside from this, As far as I know Etherdelta also has been hacked more than once too, I just wondered why it didn't list here.

for binance exchange places now I think that indeed it has very advanced and very responsive developments and there is a lot of trading volume, they also routinely clean coins or tokens that don't have life, binance platform is the best exchange platform for now.

Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges by daily trade volume, has experienced a major security breach on May 7, according to a statement shared with Cointelegraph on May 7.

Per Binance, hackers employed a variety of tactics including phishing and viruses to obtain a large number of 2FA codes and API keys in addition to other information.

Investigation? By who, how would they detect the perpetrator with this anonymous system of cryptocurrency, this is how Binance issue will go too and it will be impossible for them to even get a clue to who the fraudster is.

They better put pressure on government to regulate cryptocurrency and also subject themselves to regulation, that is the only way we can start finding solution to apprehending any scammer, which will still not be that easy provided they scammed through a blockchain technology, but at least with government regulation, it is has a way of instilling fears and reducing the number of perpetrators.

There was an investigation of this I believe, however I was not able to follow completely the update.
Investigation happens because users with deposits complained about the site and they want to claim their lost bitcoin and also their creditors.
This case was a hot topic before and I guess the remaining assets will be sent to its creditors or to those party that are allowed to claim.

Actually prevention should be done, and I agree that crypto will be regulated and the last big hack should be a call for the regulators to act.

I think there is methods of following where the money is going and how to find who got the hack which is a bit scary considering we wanted crypto to be anon but after all its not as private as we once thought it was. I know the topic is hacking so it could be good right now but when it comes to people knowing how much bitcoin you have that could potentially change your opinion.

There was a group (a security firm I think) that actually followed all that money into which address' it went to and actually found the hackers bitcoin wallet address, that is great for following up and if that bitcoin address is attached to some exchange to cash out to fiat they could actually contact at least the most famous exchanges and see if they had it and with KYC they could potentially identify the hacker. Now, that is a very long and tiring work but after all it could be definitely done to say the least. If they can manage it then it would change the shape of crypto currency forever both by less hacks but also less privacy.

This is a list exchanges hacked 2011/2018, I hope I do not have to update this year.

i see in the list for exchange hacked that QuadrigaCX closed because of owner disappeared?
as i read in this articles about the QuadrigaCX CEO Died in India (https://www.coindesk.com/indian-death-certificate-crypto-exchange-quadrigacx-death), so that means the owner not disappear but the owner died because of complications from Crohn’s disease

Do you add local exchanges too? Coinsecure got hacked and it was reported on 12th April 2018: http://prntscr.com/np1rz3

And around $3.4 million (438.318 BTC)  has been hacked from the Indian exchange.

They later refunded the users in 10% BTC and 90% INR though: https://www.coindesk.com/coinsecure-may-refund-rupees-not-bitcoin-3-4-million-heist

Now that crypto gaining again, hackers find ways to hack exchanges, exchanges should be much more secured and focus more on developing their security, now that even Binance one of the most secured exchange they targeted it.

This is really a bad scenario in the market to be honest. Like your funds could be exposed to anyone who is good at hacking. After Binance got hacked, I have lost my belief in all the exchanges and am of the view that any exchange could be hacked if this could happen to the best exchange. The security could be improved as well like if we look at the security level of Pentagon in the US, the system is completely opaque to any hack attempt.

I like that "not your key`s, not your bitcoins" part, it sums all up. Lost bitcoins are lost, you can`t get them back. There are no insurance that can print you bitcoins that you lost, bail outs in crypto would be funny thing to see.
Nice list, maybe some people will think about where to leave bitcoins after seeing this topic. If you don`t protect yourself who else will? Don`t expect from any kind of service to do your job.

"UpBit Exchange Phishing Email Scam Came From North Korea, Source Claims"

Quote
Hackers from North Korea were behind a phishing scam targeting users of South Korean cryptocurrency exchange UpBit, Korean-language cryptocurrency news outlet CoinDesk Korea reported on May 29.

According to findings by local cybersecurity firm East Security, the scam came in the form of an email sent to UpBit users requesting account information.

The pretence was a fake giveaway, with the emails also containing a file called “Event Winner Personal Information Collection and Usage Agreement.hwp,” which would run malicious code when opened.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/upbit-exchange-phishing-email-scam-came-from-north-korea-source-claims (https://cointelegraph.com/news/upbit-exchange-phishing-email-scam-came-from-north-korea-source-claims)

This will never end, every day more phishing, scams, thefts ...
and with Bitcoin increasing the price, more exposed.

- Check the web address of the exchange before entering your data.
- Update passwords regularly.
- Do not open suspicious mail.

Good luck, ;)

I don't know when this exchange hack race would stop! Within 5 months in 2019, almost 300 Million USD already hacked! The crypto market won't be accepted widely until this exchange hack stops! Bithumb is becoming the home of hackers. Every year, this exchange faced several hack attacks, and now I have a doubt with the team! Binance hack and 41M USD lost was totally disappointing! I wish this year, we won't see any major exchange hacks!

When they become non custodial. That's the only thing that'll stop it in its tracks. All the same I'd be interested to what Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini are doing right when everyone else is doing it wrong. Coinbase in particularly is the juiciest target by far.

As for S Korea the exchanges seem just as dim and incompetent as the people who trade on them.

No doubt it is the effort of a hacker always to target technologies especially the top trending or popular technologies. They love to achieve or extract the most precious data or information or you can say the precious currency of modern era which is the Bitcoin and other crypto currency. They will always be trying to hack or target the utmost profitable sources what we should do is to strengthen our security much more.

I was surprised by this list, I was worried that there would be no safe exchange to save crypto assets.
It should be a concern that security is important and users must get a guarantee. I like binance with their guarantee after the Hack case (SAFU).

Yes this is right. We cannot help with it because with the passage of time we loose Bitcoin and the current mined figure which is 17 million Bitcoin are not there in the market. Many of them are lost so we have 17 million minus the lost Bitcoins available. Yeah the list is good which gives you an insight into the reliability of the best exchanges in the market.

Well, there are reports that most of the hacks are coming from the same groups of people sponsored by the governments of North Korea and Russia, but you know, these are just Western reports. All politics lead to fake news.

I don't even really consider all hacks are legit. I still believe Mt Gox and others were exit scams. But that's just me, I hate trusting people and when you see their faces...

Binance did this because of fear of loosing their legacy and had they not done this, they would have no doubt lost users and money of course. So they preferred to save their trust and now people are back on the exchange with more enthusiasm and work to make money by investing in crypto. Binance did so because they had the money and I am not sure if any other exchange out there would be able to do so.

Quote
According to CEO Artak, the hackers did not have access to confidential information such as KYC data, or codes. In addition, no values were stolen from their exchange. However, this is not exactly the best thing to do for an exchange that is about to be launched. But as with everything that is new, there will always be some problems in the beginning, hopefully, this does not happen when there is money involved for both parties.

It's surprising that this project takes a long time, I still remember Beaxy introducing the platform in 2018.
of course this is very embarrassing because the case of the hack happened when Beaxy was preparing for the launch of their exchange this year.

"Polish Exchange Shuts Down and Disappears With Customers Funds"

Quote
Polish cryptocurrency exchange Coinroom has reportedly shut down its operations and disappeared with customer funds,
local business news outlet money.pl reported on May 31.

Money.pl received an email from one of its readers, who stated that Coinroom —  which was registered in 2016 — ceased operations overnight and disappeared with customers’ money in April. Some users say they had up to 60,000 zloty (around $15,790) in their accounts.

Before ceasing its operations, Coinroom reportedly sent emails to its customers, containing information about contract terminations. Coiroom customers had only one day to withdraw their money, which was in accordance with Coinroom regulations signed by users. However, customers reportedly claim that some of them got only part of the money, while most of them did not receive their funds back at all.

I agree with you that we should not relent on securing our account from time to time and one of the greatest we will ever make is to keep our fund on an exchange. No matter how good an exchange is, hackers are always very smart people and they are well trained for this.

They update themselves from time to time more than exchange security engineers themselves, and when it comes to coding in internet, there will always be loop holes from time to time which might not be seen easily. The best way to just safeguard our coin is to keep it safe in our wallet and also make sure our personal pc is safe guarded too because of malwares that could steal our system information.

I am very sure that they can never be hit second time again, and would have put all the necessary measure in place to really guide against this, because if they get hit the second time, this may be the end to their reign, now that people still believe that it was just an over sight which has been sorted, they should better keep it that way and retain their respect in the eyes of the public.

I know that no one is above mistake, but that was a costly mistake for them to have given themselves bad record amongst these smaller exchanges, I am sure they will not fee happy now being listed among exchanges that has been hacked. Anyway, they have gone past that already.

I'm sure they felt they'd put all the necessary measures in place already. And then it happened.

The only time users will care about further hacks is whether it costs them money a la Bitfinex. Bitfinex are psychopaths and their customers are indoctrinated into a cult so that's to be expected. I don't think Binance customers would take so kindly to being forced to pay for their mistakes.

Binance are so rich they should be able to fund any reasonably sized hack themselves.

I don't think installing antivirus could help you avoid phishing sites nor installing virus on your computer. It actually making it worse. After all, antivirus devs are the people to work on creating viruses in order for their business keep on track. Probably bookmarking, remembering the domain(.com, .org, .ph and etc), being aware on news about the exchange might help and secure yourself from phishing sites.

Why do you think so? Doesn't installing paid antivirus reduce the risk of virus threats?
When using the Windows operating system, I installed the Mcaffe Internet Security paid antivirus on my laptop. Proven to protect when surfing the internet, phishing websites are automatically blocked by the antivirus.

Much better to bookmarks those site that you always visited it will lessen the risk of being victimized by phishing site which growing from time to time, it will minimized your operations to open unsecured site where you are not sure if you able to type it properly.

It does help a lot, if the antivirus you are using is gotten directly from the company and paid for. Majority of us use some of this cracked ones, and what is in it for the provider, if not to also give us a cracked version that has some of these phishing coding embedded in them. So the best way to get a good antivirus to protect our system is to buy and originally licensed one from the company.

The most important security for our personal wallet is to make use of very strong code that will make it very difficult for hackers to hack. We have some combinations of codes that it will take a hacker over 100 years to be able to crack.

all i can say is that the attack on Mt.Gor exchange might be coming from the same person. this showcase the need for people to avoid abandoning their tokens on exchange. it is not advisable or favourable. get a wallet. whatever you earn from the exchange can be earn on the wallet.

I'm from the West and I've never heard of such claims. Not once. Most hacks seem to get blamed on an unknown hacker. What I'm saying is stop with the us vs them propaganda.

I was surprised by this list, I was worried that there would be no safe exchange to save crypto assets.
It should be a concern that security is important and users must get a guarantee. I like binance with their guarantee after the Hack case (SAFU).
Hopefully other exchangers will do the same thing with what Binance Exchange does by insuring their exchangers so that if something goes wrong, someone can be responsible for the funds of investors and traders.
So far only binance has that service, we can be sure not to trust too much and always keep your assets in a safer wallet and that is not an exchange.

Even binance has started hacking several weeks or months ago if I am not mistaken. But indeed saving assets too large on the exchange is quite risky.
Only saving the assets in the exchange isn't recommended but if we didn't do it, we also won't get any profit, right ?

Lots of exchanges are hacked. The biggest exchanges like binance can be hacked. For exchange owners, it should be more secure by giving the best and the best antivirus. So that the assets of investors are not easily stolen.

That will not prevent hackers from doing that because these hackers keep getting smarter in doing the action. In addition to the exchange security guarding the assets of its users, we also do not always save assets on exchange accounts because they are prone to hacking.

Oh another exchange been hacked.Im not familiar with Bittrue but basing into their tweet

"The hacker used what they learned from this breach to then access the Bitrue hot wallet and move 9.3 million XRP and 2.5 million ADA to different exchanges." (https://twitter.com/BitrueOfficial/status/1144066878819536896)

Basing on calculations its about $4M+ of lost funds.I do somehow expect for these exchange hacks specially
when bitcoins price or entire market is soaring high.

Well this is a pity. These exchanges should work on their security more than anything else. This is important to keep the trust of the users restored. It was a shock to see Binance getting hacked as well and that exchange being the leading exchange had been able to control the situation for the users but the rest of the exchange might not have enough funds to do that.

The way I see it, it seems that the regulated exchanges are more safe than the exchanges that are not regulated, or am I wrong? Because from the list we have here, I didn’t see any regulated exchange on the list. I don’t really know for sure, but mainly what I am seeing is exchanges that are not being regulated. Binance is not fully regulated, and it was hacked recently… Coinbase is being regulated and it is very safe and well secured. Even from the way the login works, I haven’t seen any other exchanges that works that way.

But suddenly wondered why I cannot enter into coinbene even my 2fa all of a sudden failed to enter the code always. That could be the reason why? But I noticed that etherdelta was not there in the list, As far as I know it was also hacked right?

Truthfully, hacks are becoming more rampant and more sophisticated than before. So many hackers are learning trades and exchanges seems to be the jackpot due to the large amount of transactions and funds on those platforms. Most surprising to me was the hack of Binance. Never expected it.

To safeguard your funds, never put funds on Exchange and never leave a trade on for too long. It's a safe way to have your funds untapped

Very nice thread VB1001,
I am long been concerned by exchanges, and In my monthly recap I have been telling they are the weakest link on the bitcoin ecosystem.
At a local Bitcoin conference I recently spoke to a “Binance Angel” (sort of binance marketing guy) who told me they were quite explicit on their hack: they disciples the maximum possible information as they think that would help other Exchange.
In my opinion this is only half of the truth as they know there aren’t many exchanges out there with the scale for having a decent security, liquidity  and legal operation the customers and regulators are expecting from exchanges in 2019.
So probably we are going to see a massive push for “Darwinist extinction” of small exchanges, with specs for only 3/4 global players.
This until traditional incumbent decide to enter the space (like Bakkt).
Maybe I have been drifting slightly OT...

Till date I haven't been affected by any of the exchange hacking incident although I have used almost all the exchange that have been hacked at one point in time. The secret is already highlighted in the OP above and sang everyday by the community but my individuals seems to ignore that advice. (Not your key, not your coin). Exchanges should only be used for trading & not for holding your assets.

As for a solution, I don't think there's any currently, the only way to minimize the impact is by having a set aside fund to cover up any damages when it occurs just as Binance did. Also a weekly audit of the exchange to search for flaw which hacker can take advantage of might also help. The thing is, all centralized system (exchanges) are liable to hack & if your decentralized exchange gets hacked then it was not decentralized enough unless it has to do with phishing.

Cryptocurrency loans platform YouHodler left millions of records containing private financial data from thousands of users exposed online, researchers found.

In a blog post, vpnMentor said its research team, led by Noam Rotem and Ran Locar, discovered a database leak as part of their web-mapping project and traced it back to YouHodler.

The data, they found, exposed comes to more then 86 million records that includes users’ names, email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers and birthdays. It gets worse. Credit card numbers, CVV numbers, bank details and crypto wallet addresses were also exposed in the data.

“The implications of this breach are extensive,” said the firm.

It's terrible that in 2019 the number of exchange markets with the highest number was hacked, right?  then is there any exchange that compensates for the loss from the incident

With the increased number of Bitcoin users and exchange users the danger of hacking is becoming bigger. The problem is that exchanges don't invest enough in security and users are not aware enough of all possible illegal activities. It's not only about hacking because of money but also sensitive personal data. And to be honest what exchange protects its users enough or compesates the financial loss.

I was hoping to see binance on the list and I saw it hahaha, exchange hack is becoming rampant these days, and no one knows which exchange would be next, so for active traders I think the best shot should still be the top exchanges with safu option incase things like this happens. Exchange hack can't be foreseen but it's always advised not to keep your funds in an exchange. Some exchanges are already working with top tech security company to help give a better security to their exchange which is a good move.

The reputation of exchanges become null because of these hackers. You know what? Hackers should be eradicated in this industry because they are ruining the investment and people. A lot of exchanges have died because of them. Though exchanges give their best in order to make their clients or traders happy. They want traders to have sufficient grounds in order to be profitable, yet hackers are collecting money from the hardworks of others. Shame to them.

This is a very sensitive issue, it depends on the judgment, solvency of the exchange...

Here is a recent and rare case that can be satisfactory for victims of the scam:

Bitpoint Reveals Amounts Stolen, Pledging to Reimburse Users in Crypto
https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitpoint-reveals-amounts-stolen-pledging-to-reimburse-users-in-crypto (https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitpoint-reveals-amounts-stolen-pledging-to-reimburse-users-in-crypto)
Yes unfortunately this is true about the crypto market and the hacked exchanges. There are many exchanges that have been hacked and I think that it needs to be improved to the highest extent. The constant up gradation of the cyber security system of the exchanges would keep things pretty much secure. This will strengthen the trust in decentralized financial institutes.
Agree, every exchange should increase security even higher than these events should be a lesson for owners of exchange to pay more attention to and maintain the security of customer money and company assets so that there are no more bad events

From all that list it means someone who said if we put our money on exchanger, that means we not have control for it anymore. Maybe that is what people want to said, maybe it is bad if we put all our money in exchanger.
In my own advice I don't even let my funds be in any exchanger for the next 24 hours we never can tell what next will happen is good to store your assets in a wallet where you have the private key to or better still sell them to Fiat and keep the Money in the bank.

Lots of exchanges are hacked. The biggest exchanges like binance can be hacked. For exchange owners, it should be more secure by giving the best and the best antivirus. So that the assets of investors are not easily stolen.

I thought have seen it all not until a dude of mine got hack on blockchain and even his imtoken wallet. We should be careful regardless of where we store our login information as well as our private keys.

As much as we really stress that important point in this community, there are a lot of inexperience traders who thought that letting their funds sit in a exchange is a good advice, I'm very nervous having $200-$500 worths of funds sit in an exchange. Call me paranoid or something, but I will just immediately move it to a wallet that is safe and that I have control of my keys.

I loss that money if the exchange will be back as I know I'm also at fault.
If the exchange got hacked, it's not your fault but them. You only deposited on there, what's wrong with that?

Unfortunately the list of hacked exchanges is getting biggee, it's like they are easy prey for criminals. This is a huge problem for users and I beleive exchanges should invest more in security and put more efforts to protect the users. It's an additional investment for them but without that they will not survive.

Thanks for sharing this information. It is all the exchanges' responses to keep the token safe. While it is always the community to be the faster responser rather than the security team. Power of the security team is limited, power of community is unlimited. That's why we view the community so important.

Thanks for sharing those information to us. Yes, we all heard that hackers had stolen over $40 million worth of bitcoin form Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges. They also managed to get some user information such as two-factor autentication codes, which are required to log in to Binance account. We would like to see more details from exchanges so users can learn how to keep account safe. I like the tips below the list. It's really helpful.

South Korean Crypto Exchange Prixbit Closes Down Citing Financial Difficulties

Quote
Business Korea reports that the customers are concerned about their deposits given that the exchange was closed due to financial problems.

Business Korea also gave reasons why many korean based exchanges are in danger of closing down saying that only four exchanges have been able to directly connect with local banks allowing for fiat transactions while the rest have been restricted from the financial system. They also cite low trading volume as a major concern.

As per the Business Korea report about 200 Korean exchanges risk being closed down which is about 97 percent of the sector.

Last year 2019 become bad and extremely with many exchange hacked with million dollar each exchange, many exchange never grow up and failed after hacked like cryptopia where many investor money never can get back. I hope with new year many exchange market upgrade their security system where most safety from hacker, investor will safety hold their assets in exchange market.

Nice graphical presentation.
I wish information about the amount hacked in each exchange since 2011 was all available. It would be awesome to have a graph showing how much in BTC or USD has been hacked in different exchanges each year.

Yes, that is the idea, but it is the most complicated, to find and contrast the data.
The final presentation per year should look like this for every year:

I never save and hold coin with not poplar exchange market because I worried when this market hacked make us loss our saving assets and I ever lost 0.1 btc when saving in liqui because some one hack my account, for safety exchange if you want hold long time better keep save with popular and bigger exchange market like Binance, Bitrrex, Huobi and Kucoin.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information, I am very surprised to see that quite a number of exchanges have fallen victim to hackers.
Seeing these data we become open-minded, it turns out very dangerous if we save all the funds we have on exchanges. Therefore this is
a lesson for all of us to save our funds in the hardware wallet. And I am also more surprised to see that every year the number of exchanges
hacked is increasing.

Unfortunately the list of hacked exchanges is getting bigger, it's like they are easy prey for criminals. This is a huge problem for users and I beleive exchanges should invest more in security and put more efforts to protect the users. It's an additional investment for them but without that they will not survive.
This requires more of a good management than strong IT infrastructure unfortunately. It is usually humans that err and become the weakest links that result in hacks. There will never be a true aid for inside jobs as well and is probably a matter of time before a rogue employee takes a chair somewhere high in the ladder. For this to be secure we would need a truly regulated market where people would risk real jail-time for wrongdoings in this business.

Even though there is a lot of cases of hacked exchanges from the past to present, we are still thriving and the market just shakes it off. I hope in the next few years, the exchanges will have more security than before which they can easily defend themselves from a strong cyber attack. Exchanges are easy target for the hackers and exchanges should really take their security seriously if they want to build a solid reputation long term.

We haven't finished the year and we have another exchange hacked.
Surprisingly the number of exchange hacked on 2019. Seemed like it was worst year for these exchange since they've lost not just money but the trust of the people. I am not already trading with other platforms only those who are at the top exchanges since most secured exchange are on top. But we haven't secured our assets in exchange because anytime it will be hacked even they are the safeat exchange ever.

Going through this exchange hack list, quite really sad.
Let's avoid storing funds in exchanges, exchanges should solely be for trading, funds should be stored in non-custodian wallet. Fortunately some good wallets support Multi-assets and exchanges, few like exodus, trust, atomic.

One of your posts (second one) includes only Bitcoin Core as software.  I think some other wallets could be included as part of that list, namely Electrum, latest version, downloaded from official website, verified signature and file hash. Also Electrum for Android since it's the same except for mobile phones / tablets. Might as well mention Bitcoin Wallet for Android.

With a note that, do not download any updates except from official website or Google Play store. There was a recent phishing attempt, but it has been fixed by preventing showing links in server messages. Still, no one would have gotten their coins stolen if they only checked the official websites and not clicked on a pop up message.

I thought about including scams or vulnerabilities of the wallets, but I think it is better to focus the thread only in the exchanges, but if there is any important news on this subject, it can also be published in the thread.

But this type of news is published quickly in several sections of the forum.
Anyway thanks for your suggestion.

If you wish to save yourself from a possible hack and losing funds you have on some exchange you can do only two things, withdraw your funds when you finish with trading or use a decentralized exchange. Withdrawing funds after trading can be expensive, fees are high! Decentralized exchanges are slow with their low volumes. What is better to do, risking with leaving funds on an exchange, or being slow on dex but safe is a question for each of us.

Jesus, I've been around long enough to know there were quite a few exchanges that got hacked but I apparently missed this thread and didn't realize there were so many.

Sometimes I've wondered whether some of these so-called hacks were real, or if they were cases of exchange employees pulling inside jobs and stealing funds.  That's what happened in Cryptsy's case if I'm not mistaken, and in any case if you're an exchange, claiming you got hacked provides the perfect cover for an exit scam.  I have no doubt real hackers try their hardest to steal coins from exchanges, but you'd think that in such a tech-oriented business these exchanges would know a thing or two about security.

I don't do much trading, but I do still buy some altcoins occasionally and even though I trust the exchange I typically use, there's no way in hell I'd keep coins on it for more than a day.  It causes me anxiety to do so, I kid you not.

It's true, you only have this feeling when you really know what can happen at any time.
And even if their exchange is not pirated, they can also close it and disappear forever.

I'm sure most 'hacks' are the owners stealing but one of the biggest of all was Coincheck and that hack was entirely down to them keeping everything that was taken in a hot wallet. They had the free and fully integrated option of multi sig but didn't even do that, let alone pay up to $80 for a Trezor that would've saved them a few hundred million dollars.

More coins have likely been lost in users' own wallets than at exchanges. For people that aren't highly knowledgeable, I think storing coins on a reputable, regulated exchange is preferable. Of course, most of the coins over the years have been lost by highly knowledgeable people - early users. Storing your coins yourself also involves physical security. Protecting your storage device, as cryptocurrency-specific storage devices have notoriously poor physical security. And of course protecting your seed.

@gentlemand warned a few days ago about the hacked of Albits, It is already included in the 2020 list, since that day.

Now some details of the stolen coins have been published:

Quote
An update on the company's website now indicates that "fortunately a good part of the coins were kept on cold storage" and that it will issue partial refunds, not having the wherewithal to fully compensate users.

The cryptocurrencies taken in the hack are now listed as:

Bitcoin (BTC): 6,929 lost out of 14,782 held
Ether (ETH): 23,210 lost out of 32,262
Pirate Chain (ARRR): 3,924,082 lost out of 9,619,754
Verus Coin (VRSC): 414,154 lost out of 852,726
Komodo (KMD): 1,066 lost out of 48,015

The site indicates that users who saw losses must apply for their partial refunds. The bitcoin and ether stolen are valued at around $63,000 at press time.

IOTA Network Has Been Hacked and Funds Stolen, AGAIN!

Quote
It appears as if IOTA, the blockless network, has been attacked, hacked, and funds stolen if recent reports is anything to go by.

Representatives of the decentralized network are now working closely with law enforcement and cyber-security experts to investigate what they say is a “coordinated attack” that resulted in a loss of funds.

The Coordinator has been paused
The IOTA Foundation has subsequently paused the Coordinator and are urging users not to use their official wallet, Trinity, until further notice.

It's sad that everyear they have Exchanges that being hacked by the hackers , most of the site listed the security is good Like Binance but the hackers are very smart because they enter and get the money from the exchange.

I hope this year no more hack exchange to add in that list and for the team of the trading sites make sure to secure your system and also the information of your traders/user because they are affected to that also and posaible their real Identity to be compromised just like for the exchange who required KYC.

DENVER – Decentralized finance (DeFi) project bZx has suffered an attack in which a hacker successfully gamed multiple DeFi protocols to extract $350,000 from the platform, about 2 percent of the assets under management.

Quote
The attack could be symptomatic of a continuing issue in DeFi, said Chainlink CEO Sergey Nazarov at the event: how to source price information.

The attack was even more notable because of its timing as the team had to deal with the hack during the ethereum community’s
EthDenver hackathon, which largely focuses on DeFi.

I do not trust exchanges to store my cryptocurrencies. Even the popular exchanges have a history of hacked and stolen cryptocurrencies so I only hold my funds on exchanges when I need to trade them. When you are offline the assets on your exchange is highly vulnerable to being hacked. So store your assets in secure wallets to avoid risks.

In a major privacy breach, the usernames and passwords of more than a quarter of a million Trident Crypto Fund customers have been stolen and published online.

Technical director of cybersecurity firm DeviceLock Ashot Oganesyan told Russian news outlet IZ the database — which contains email addresses, cellphone numbers, encrypted passwords and IP addresses — had been uploaded to various file sharing websites on February 20.
Earlier this week, hackers decrypted and published close to 120,000 of the passwords, potentially enabling them to log into affected users’ accounts and access their funds.

10,000 Russians affected

I am not trying to defend then, but those who use unreliable exchanges are probably looking for more profit by taking more risk during the process.

We can't judge them by only one point of view.

Network of Fake Bitcoin QR Code Generators Stole $45,000 in March

Quote
A network of malicious QR code generators has stolen more than $40,000 from Bitcoin (BTC) users in one month.

At least nine fake Bitcoin-to-QR code generators have been spotted in recent weeks, with security researcher, Harry Denley, first tweeting that he had identified two domains hosting fake QR code applications on March 22.

Denley later identified seven other domains sharing the same interface — suggesting that they are all created by the same developer.

The malicious websites are

-bitcoin-barcode-generator.com
-bitcoinaddresstoqrcode.com
-bitcoins-qr-code.com
-btc-to-qr.com
-create-bitcoin-qr-code.com
-free-bitcoin-qr-codes.com
-freebitcoinqrcodes.com
-qr-code-bitcoin.com
-qrcodebtc.com.

Be careful where you generate QR codes, the safest way to do it is from your own wallet, do not trust external pages.

This is pretty crazy when you sit down and look at this list. That's a LOT of money we're dealing with here.

I'm sure DEX's will be the answer to our prayers eventually, as a REAL DEX cannot be hacked, 100% trustless and permissionless, which is making it very appealing.

The problem with most DEX's is: Speed, and Liquidity.

Stakenet's Lightning Network compatible DEX solves both of these issues. Trading through the Lightning Network reduces fees, and makes trading happen pretty much instantly, furthermore their "DEX Aggragator" will combine multiple DEX orderbooks together and provide a TON on liquidity.

I hope this year no more hack exchange to add in that list and for the team of the trading sites make sure to secure your system and also the information of your traders/user because they are affected to that also and posaible their real Identity to be compromised just like for the exchange who required KYC.
The list of attacks will continue to grow. Exchange owners need to insure funds so that users do not suffer from hacker attacks. Users also do not need to store large amounts on exchanges

These decentralized finance things are somehow getting easier and easier to get hacked, I mean they are saying its decentralized but in reality they are becoming more centralized to hackers apparently :D What is the point of creating a defi system just because you think everything should be decentralized and not centralized?

I mean I get it, I love the decentralization in bitcoin but at the same time bitcoin can do it and it is against hacking as well and its quite good at being one, yet exchanges who are disliking and dismissing the centralized exchanges like binance should be capable of holding the funds there, if you are not capable of "not getting hacked", I am sorry but it is obvious why people would prefer binance or any other centralized company over the defi ones easily.

Cryptocurrency exchanges have become an easy target for hackers. The list is enormous and the amount lost is staggering. New upcoming exchanges are more vulnerable to attacks. In most cases it has been an insider job or a rival exchange.

This business is so lucrative that everyone wants to have a pie of it but none of them want to safe guard investors money. It is sad to see so many name in this list every year.

It is awesome that Binance managed to get all that money and realized that money was from the upbit and actually decided to even give it back to upbit as well. That is like the best type of friendship you could find in the exchange world, Binance knows how hard it is to run an exchange so they are making friends with the other exchanges instead of being rivals.

Think about it, it is quite easy to just keep the money because you want some other exchange to bankrupt, they are your rival after all and it doesn't make sense to help them out financially, they will be doing better thanks to your move and be your competition.

In face of all of that actually helping out and being friendly worths a lot. CZ was always the reason why I prefer binance, dude basically is the epitome of a successful crypto person.

With this long lists of hacked exchanges and probably even more to come, it can't be overruled that exchanges are not secured mostly centralized exchanges; although some were able to manage it, a good number weren't which lead to terrible losses. Moreover, so far exchanges will continue existing, hackers will always see them as a potential place to steal from. Thus, as many have said and will continue saying, if one cares for the safety of his assets then the only line of security is keeping those huge assets off exchanges.

The exchange and mining pools have been taken offline to prevent any further damage from occurring.

TheCoin.pw will attempt to distribute remaining coins as best as possible, it is recommended that exchange users raise a support request by going to https://support.thecoin.pw and requesting balances be paid out.

We are extremely sorry it has come to this and we are extremely sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Well, exchanges were never ment to be wallets and people very often use them to.stores their coins there.
Of course they are attractive to hackers, usually they are easy money and until recently exchanges didn't care too much about security.
I have a feeling that situation has slightly improved but still you shouldn't store your coins there, except the amount you wish to trade.
Exchanges will always be hacker's targets as well as banks will be always robbed by robbers. The only question is how much we can do to protect ourselves and customer policy that each exchange.has is also very important.

Most of the exchange sites within the crypto market are new and therefore the number of hackers is increasing That's why I exploit the Trusted Wallet to secure my crypto. No hacker can steal using the 2fa code to guard his wallet. this may keep our assets safe and make transactions much easier KYC sites are hacked more when exchanging. Hack exchange sites invite KYC and keep exchanging new links in order that they don't steal all our data Banks work for his or her own benefit.

Hello,
You might find interesting that GS, in his infamous last presentation, added a list of hacked exchanges to demonstrate Bitcoin is subject to hacks. (Logic fallacy here)

The rationale to use such an argumentation is intellectually embarassing, but maybe you want to add to your thread.

What a miserable experience. I was also a victim of scam exchange before but I only lose few coins in cryptopia. Well, it just a lesson for us that we have to move our coins in our wallet once we buy in exchange. Many exchanges were already lose traders because of hacking and poor security. However, this is not the reason why should we stop in trading or even discourages. Because part of the game is to lose. It just a matter of selecting better exchange that has security and liquidity.

Im 100% sure that out of this 75 exchangers closed its doors, i havent heard up their name ever since. We dont need lots of them and to those exchange owner or creator,

they do really believe that they can get some good marketshare or recognition from the market easily and soon they have realized that it isnt really feasible for them.

So its a wise choice to close their doors instead excluding to those been hacked and scammed which is a different issue.

to sip out some money.

Russian crypto-exchange Livecoin hacked after it lost control of its servers (https://www.zdnet.com/article/russian-crypto-exchange-livecoin-hacked-after-it-lost-control-of-its-servers/)

Russian cryptocurrency exchange Livecoin posted on message on its official website on Christmas Eve claiming it was hacked and lost control of some of its servers, warning customers to stop using its services.

According to posts on social media, the attack seems to have happened on the night between December 23 and December 24.

Hackers appear to have taken control of the Livecoin infrastructure and then proceeded to modify the exchange rates to gigantic and unrealistic values.

LiveCoin is one of the longest living exchanges. Being long in business in crypto is a really important measure of security. Apparently, you have to continually raise the bar, however....

Important! EXMO Security Incident Update (https://info.exmo.com/en/notifications/exmo-security-incident-update/)

Not so known exchanges, losing 5% of their total funds to the hackers? This is huge hit on them,

Quote
Dear EXMO users,

We have spotted some large withdrawals since December 21st at 2:27:02 UTC.

We are still investigating the incident, but as of now, the security audit report showed that some amounts of BTC, XRP, ZEC, USDT, ETC and ETH in EXMO’s hot wallets were transferred out of the exchange. We reacted immediately and re-deployed hot wallets. The affected hot wallets comprise near 5% of the total assets. Let us stress that all the assets in the cold wallets are safe.

I agree with @fillippone, as hackers are stepping up the game, exchanges will need to continue to raise the bar otherwise hackers are going to pick them up.

I think that the hacking of the MtGox exchange in 2011 most strongly influenced the future fate of bitcoin. Many then abandoned cryptocurrency due to the fact that it is unreliable, like exchanges, thereby reducing the price of bitcoin. I think that in general, all exchange hacks influenced the opinion of people about cryptocurrencies in general. If exchange owners were more responsive to the issue of cybersecurity, then now cryptocurrencies would be more popular among people.

Coinbase Multi-Factor Authentication Hack Affects at Least 6,000 Customers

A vulnerability that allowed hackers to bypass Coinbase’s multi-factor authentication SMS option has affected at least 6,000 of the exchange’s customers, according to a notification letter sent to affected customers that the company has filed with the California state attorney general offices.

The thing is that this hack happens months ago and it's just this month that Coinbase acknowledge it.

So we don't know why it took them so long to take responsibility, in any case Coinbase are going to reimburse those 6000 customers that have been affected by the hacks.

Coinbase also says it will reimburse those who lost funds as a result of the phishing attack, and that it has already begun to make customers whole. The company did not disclose the total amount the hackers stole.

Bitmart exchange hacked
"The latest centralized exchange hack may be among the most devastating to date as Bitmart has lost $196 million in various cryptocurrencies.

A tweet from security analysis firm Peckshield first called attention to the alleged hack Saturday night. One of Bitmart’s addresses currently shows steady outflows of entire token balances, some worth tens of millions of dollars, to an address currently labeled by Etherscan as the “Bitmart Hacker”"

At least, someone will spend a wonderful Christmas, with full of gifts...  ::)

Sometimes I wonder if they are telling the truth and if they really got hacked.

In reality, they can say that there was a security breach, but in fact, nothing happened at all and the users wouldn't notice since no proof was given, nor any audit published. It's just a matter of manipulating the databases.
Great business, you open a platform and attract users, and once the vaults are full, you can go on Twitter and say you were hacked.

Why would they offer to refund users in this case? Well, by the time you pay back the users you can earn profits with their money
I'm not saying that's what this exchange has done, but I'm sure there's at least one that has already done it

To @OP
The question should not be which exchanges have been hacked but which exchanges have never been hacked. =)

Someone may well need to start another thread in regards to this topic and link to this thread, since OP does not seem to be active (has not logged in for more than a year and a half) and there are likely going to be a lot of new additions to the "hacked" and otherwise corrupted exchanges during this calendar year, and probably we are going to continue to witness quite a few more additional falling dominoes in the coming months.. likely even having ongoing fall out from the various ongoing catastrophes into 2023.

Here are 4 exchanges that have never been hacked:
Phemex
Bybit Crypto Exchange
PrimeXBT
Kraken Crypto Exchange

It's just a matter of time until we hear they get hack, so no exchange is safe

If you put the exact date of each hack on the daily graph it clearly shows how it impacts the price.

Crypto.com exchange following the path of FTX. They mistakenly sent 400 M to Gate Exchange.
There’s a theory it wasn’t an accident. From what I heard, Cryptodotcom sent the ETH to Gate dot io shortly before the latter did their on chain proof of reserves and then it was sent back. The theory suggests the two exchanges are in kahoots and are pooling funds to use for their audit. But yes of course, never ever hold your crypto on an exchange or anywhere you have to ask permission to move your funds.

I don't know if this Thread is going to be updated again, but I am sorry to add The Rock Trading to the List.
They were hacked for 300 ETH in November, then things went South and now the oldest bitcoin Exchange around has suspended activity.

Wait, but talking about a violation now is not yet possible.  The Rock Trading has not released any leaked information about it so there is no certainty that this is really the case.  We don't know how things stand at the moment but there will soon be a meeting where members can participate and we'll see if there's any news about it.

Just one of the list that’s very important to go through and see how we are not in safe hands when we trade over an exchange which is centralised. The problem is never with the owner, founder or the group of team that runs it but it is always hackers who would do anything for the money. You can never claim back anything from the hacked exchangers because you never own anything that’s on exchanger. Makes me realise not my keys not my coins for sure. Hope at least new comers go through this list and understand why this statement is very much important to us.

If I am not wrong they reported an hack of roughly 300 ETH back in November. They even pressed charges with the Italian Police about it.

Then as far as the current event are concerned, nothing is certain yet, but there is a certain chance of an hack. We will report about that when we know it.
