Title: 55.48974266 BTC sent to Binance mistakenly!
Post by: tekin_ural on May 10, 2019, 07:40:49 AM
Hello everyone,

on 24th April we received from 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz   12.086 BTC  (see image)

On 3th May we sent 55.48974266 BTC to the same address but the recipient didn't receive it. It is a Binance account with the wallet address 1LiRFPdJNTwLT6UWYQT3KoAB6BAKEa8iQe

Probably a huge mistake that we sent the BTC to the address directly which Binance used for its withdrawals. Just saw the address coming from and sent the funds directly to this address.
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/2d21e8343bc1320896dae89a1ae3464c17ac2c2a359027060c099a36e057281d

Now they are denying that the address 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz belongs to them. I need any proof that Binance received the funds to raise a solid claim.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Well... whomever controls that "3DXb" address moved the coins on pretty quickly (https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/ec50c4ea1010dee011bf30051b79117d94c68508cfabf6d1cd1d81bc41385c8b).

Maybe you can start looking here: https://www.walletexplorer.com/address/3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz
That shows that the address is part of this "wallet": https://www.walletexplorer.com/wallet/00000b55c1bcbc1f

If you can tie any of those addresses to Binance you might be able to build your claim.

Was this a withdrawal from Binance? If so, there's your proof they control the address.

It's no surprise 1LiRFPdJNTwLT6UWYQT3KoAB6BAKEa8iQe didn't receive it if you sent it to 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz. That leaves the question: Why did you send it to 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz?

It is an obvious mistake. The address appeared on our screen as

Received April 24 2019 @ 1:05 PM To: My Bitcoin Wallet From: 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz €64.964,42 12.086 BTC

We just used this address which is quite stupid.

Wait... I think I might have misread the OP slightly... or it was explained in a confusing manner...

Where or whom did you actually receive the 12.086 BTC from? Are you 100% sure that transfer was from Binance? Did you withdraw 12.086 BTC from Binance to your wallet? or did the person sending you 12.086 BTC say they sent it from their Binance account? ???

Now they are denying that the address 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz belongs to them. I need any proof that Binance received the funds to raise a solid claim.

Here it goes,

The transaction from where you received 12 BTC first shares input from address 1NDyJtNTjmwk5xPNhjgAMu4HDHigtobu1s (which I had seen couple of times while doing some investigations) and it seems like Binance own it and they have addressed it here with their tweet (screenshot below). Since they both share the input in one transaction then it means that they both are owned by Binance and hence there goes that they are lying about them not owning that 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz address and a strong proof that they indeed received the funds.

Thank you for caring.

We received on 24th April 12.086 BTC from our partner which is a correct, smooth transfer.
tx id: https://www.blockchain.com/de/btc/tx/f0d61e74a88aa7e3c6d8ecaac4ecdc1b8148bec191a1fefb32a74a17a806e35f

On 3rd May we sent to the address which appears on our screen as sender 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz  55.48974266 BTC
tx id: https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/2d21e8343bc1320896dae89a1ae3464c17ac2c2a359027060c099a36e057281d

But this was a mistake because 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz is not the address of the partner but the sender address linked to binance main address 1NDyJtNTjmwk5xPNhjgAMu4HDHigtobu1s   It appeared on our screen as sender. Now Binance's sender address received the coins and immediately sent them to various addresses. https://www.blockchain.com/de/btc/address/3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz

Any reply is highly appreciated.

Look at Avirunes' post above... he has proven the "3DXb" address belongs to Binance... they publicly stated on Twitter that the "1NDyJtNTjmwk5xPNhjgAMu4HDHigtobu1s" address is theirs... and UTXOs from that address are included with UTXOs from "3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz" in the transaction that sent you 12.086 BTC.

The logical inference is that as UTXOs from both those addresses were used in the same transaction (https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/f0d61e74a88aa7e3c6d8ecaac4ecdc1b8148bec191a1fefb32a74a17a806e35f), then those two addresses are controlled by the same entity...

Indeed, they confirmed that the main address belongs to them, they just deny the 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz. Thank you for sharing the proof.

Alright, it seems to be proven now that this address is owned by binance.

However, this still doesn't mean that they are going to give you your coins back.

One should assume that they are going to do this, but they definitely don't have to.
They can either decide to keep it, because (1) it was your fault or (2) because their internal policy doesn't allow to manually access the private keys in such cases / initiate such transactions.

But i wouldn't rate binance as a company which will keep your coins. However, they still have the right to do so.

Sending 55+ BTC to a random address you received funds from is careless at least.

Thank you very much for your honest insights. Indeed, we can call it as a huge blunder, high definition virtual insanity. But it is a proven sender address whose owner is no one else than Binance. Sender and recipient are clear and I will post the result of their investigations here. Should be there today.

Create a post on reddit about this and keep sending them support tickets and tweets. If this gets some publicity (it’s 55 BTC, so it’s not that hard) they will have to help you. Unfortunately, many exchanges only give you attention if something blows up.

received mistakenly 55.48974266 BTC. The mistake occurs because our customer copied transaction confirmation

If they want to be absolutely sure, why are they asking for a video that can be faked, instead of a signed message from the funding address?

Probably because of some KYC regulation blablas. But yes, i agree, a signed message or small transaction with an output previously clarified would instantly prove he's the owner of the BTC.. What do i know...

We just used this address which is quite stupid.
It can happen to anybody and the mistake you made is not asking the owner of the account the certain address you ought to send the btc. Like HCP said whoever is the holder of private keys to the account moved the btc at 2019-05-05 04:01:42 which one hour few minutes after you send the transaction.
I think you should provide the block explorer information of the transaction with picture along with signin message from the wallet uae to sent the btc to raise a solid claim.

-snip-

I don't think that they will now turn back after they accepted that they own the address and are showing signs that they will refund you. Maybe the balance amount is so big that they are going through some internal processes to clear out. I think they will refund you back since they are a popular exchange and won't let this incident stain their reputation.

I hope that they do refund you in the end.  :)

Given that you're talking about BTC worth nearly US$400k... They're not instantly going to go, "yep sure here you go."

It will need to be reviewed, by I would guess several layers of management before a decision is made. That sort of value is likely way outside the limits that support are authorised to release. Plus, it's the weekend.

I know it isn't easy, but just sit tight and wait for them to send you a response. Constantly chasing 1st tier support isn't going to get your funds back any quicker. Exchanges are notoriously slow. :-\

tekin_ural, as others have said you should not doubt that you'll get coins back, Binance just need more time to process your case. The fact that they admitted it was their address and that you have made very fast and productive communication with them shows that you only need patience.

I can only say you can be happy that it is about Binance, and not some other less known crypto exchange. Such things can take months, so be happy if you solve it in week or two.

Thank you for your comment, Lucius. Until now they didn't made a statement admitting it. From my side, there is only enough evidence to prove it.

Is there really any legal obligation of Binance to return? I mean, even if the address is linked to a wallet that they could use? Is it possible that this address is from a user and that he has withdrawn the resources?

I believe that for their reputation and as a marketing strategy the idea is to return those resources. But in a possible lawsuit against them, it would be very difficult to resolve.

The proof I mentioned is strong one. I don't think there will be any tweets or statements made by Binance regarding that address that they own it since it wasn't used as widely as the main address 1NDyJtNTjmwk5xPNhjgAMu4HDHigtobu1s.

It's just them taking time because of how complex the situation is (as HCP explained). You can only wait for it.

Hello Binance,

thank you for taking care of my transfer to your platform.

48 hours passed and no feedback from your side. How long approx. do you need for the refund?

I again want to ask you to refund 55.48974266 BTC which was mistakenly sent to your sender address 3DXbTjQ3k4sWQuMHFwej5oY7obU6rCaRpz linked to your main address 1NDyJtNTjmwk5xPNhjgAMu4HDHigtobu1s on 5th May 2019 from my coinpayments wallet.

Well, first, this problem was caused by yourself. You made your own mistake by sending those Bitcoins to their address. Imagine if the address you have sent to is a personal address, there is no way for your funds to get sent back. Second, Binance team must be able to help you in this regard as they are the owner of this address, they don't want to lose their reputation and I'm sure they will soon resolve this issue but not for now as they just got a hack accident which made them very busy to fix anything and to ensure everything will be working well (both for team and users) so it's just about priority. All you can do now is to wait them, give them time and no need to poke them every time.

i feel your pain.

fortunately the proof that they control the address in question is quite strong, but your timing couldn't have been worse. you sent this tx just a few days before they were hacked. they are currently overhauling and testing their entire system now and still haven't reopened deposits/withdrawals as a result. they have much bigger problems than you, so i'm sure reconciling your account and returning your funds is not a priority for them.

hopefully they will refund you after they reopen deposits/withdrawals in the next day or two. right now, nobody can get money out of binance.

I would consider myself lucky if I get a reply within 15 days and I wouldn't be surprised if I wait for a month. I think you need patience in your case. (you have no choice ;D anyway)Don't forget that if it was a random Joe on the web, you would have very very less chance to see him back to tell you "hey dude, here is your money"

Firstly, you need to understand the previous advice giving to you by others that the refund will take some time not even when the exchange in subject experienced an accident and after doing a couple of research this is what I found which indicated the wallet was Binance's with the amount you sent along with the date time when the Bitcoin are moved. Thank you very much again to all of you.

Could one of us place this thread into Binance Reddit page please?

I think this could help me a lot. I did it by myself and in the same minute it was deleted. I don't blame them since it was a brand new account. Can anyone here help me - I would really appreciate that.

Please let me know for any costs that occur due to manual work which is connected to this help request.

Reddit is really over moderated and most subs are run by their own companies so they delete anything negative.

Binance are more concerned with security measures from the 7000 btc hack right now so don't be surprised if it still takes weeks to get a resolution.

No. It is not.

You might believe that it is just pressing a button. But a security-orientated company (which binance definitely is, just as any crypto-based exchange should be), has security policies.
Accessing private keys - outside of the automated process - can only be done with a lot of work / security measurements.

IMO, you should be happy that they even answered that they will try to recover them.
This is not self-evident at all!

If i would run such a company, my policy would strictly forbid anyone to touch any private key. They would be too isolated to be touched by a human being inside of the company.
In this case your coins would not be released to you.

I do know, that this would probably be an asshole-exchange in the view of the majority. But IMO, security > convenience.
I would require that everyone can properly read and therefore use the exchange as intended.

Long story short.. stop stressing them. They either recover them (which it seems they are doing) or they are not.
Give them their time. Even if it takes 6 months. Just be happy that they even try to do you the favor.

This isn't like the cases in which a (Fork)coin was sent to the wrong chain, the funds have moved already. So there's no need for private keys to the address OP send his funds to.

You are right. I should have expressed my self more precisely:

Accessing private keys / initiate transactions - outside of the automated process - can only be done with a lot of work / security measurements.

Even tho no direct access to private keys is necessary, the employee still need some way to 'access' them.
Even when they are not able to directly 'view' or 'copy' them, if they can initiate transactions, they have kind of an 'indirect' access to them (which is enough to steal funds for example).

I am sure employers can't simply initiate random transaction. Therefore, regarding security measurements, the same applies.

Edit: Aww, sweet you. Thanks for trying to make me a legendary. Unfortunately the bitcointalk.org god doesn't want to gift me legendary status with ~900 activity. But still appreciate it  :-*

OP I think you should say them that the status shows solved whereas you haven't received your money back.
But make sure that you aren't stressing them too much as you previously did. Bothering them too much would just make the case worse and make the probability of the refund low.
Showing the status as 'Solved' seems like a red signal to me. You should definitely ask them about this while making sure you don't keep bothering them with repeated pings.

Did you tried checking the TXID that was mentioned on the ticket. Walletexplorer has last update of 15th May so wasn't able to get it from here. Try checking that TXID from your end and crosscheck the address to which it was sent.

Obviously, it will take more time, months or maybe not at all if OP accidentally sent those funds to an exchange that doesn't care its customer or its reputation.

Now OP profits from those refunded +50 BTC ;D

Patience has finally paid off for you, although it was not a long period of time, but 55+BTC in a very uncertain situation make every minute last like a day. Binance showed that such mistakes can be fixed in a relatively short period and for a small price. I hope you learned something from this, always check address before sending / receiving coins. ;)

I just saw your thread and the stupidity in which 55BTC is sent to a wrong address is mind blowing and especially after the hack i was lacking in confidence with the binance team and i was bashing them when ever i get to comment on a thread regarding them, but the way in which they responded and resolved your case is outstanding even though you were a prick disturbing them every two days for the mistake you made :D .
Big shout out to binance for resolving this issue but still angry about their security blunder they made.
