Title: hardware wallets safe?
Post by: beaxchange on June 09, 2019, 10:50:10 AM
I personally think it is safe as an offline wallet offers the highest level of security for storing crypto is it involves storing the funds in a secured place that is not connected to any network. This type of wallet can also offer good protection against computer vulnerabilities. The hardware wallets are the best type of offline wallet that offers very high security and ease of use. Also, as these wallets allow backup, you can easily recover your funds if you lose this device.

One such example of a hardware wallet is Trezor. It operates as secure cold storage. You can easily transfer bitcoins to the device using the Trezor interface, which is accessible from macOS, Linux, Windows, and Android. Its interface is quite easy to use that lists your coins and recent transactions.

Trezor uses a 12 to 24-word seed for protection and recovery and a user-defined PIN. You can also add an encrypted passphrase to your wallet for an added layer of security.

what say u?

Offline wallets are safe but it will also be prone to attackers if you are going to go online. It will also be unsafe if you lost the hardware or neglect being vigilant on your account.

Safest wallet on the market is the offline ones. You don't have a pay a lot of money for who know what product, just buy one usb flash, encryption without password and save your wallet in it.

Just a reminder that you still need to save these paraphrases and at least have a trusted someone to share it with as we will never know what will happen to you. I have heard some stories in my country where they have hoarded cryptocurrencies and end up dies without someone knowing how to open their wallets. In the end that person has assets that cannot be used be their family because they will not let anyone know their wallet codes.

Hardware wallets are the ultimate definition of security when it comes to crypto assets, if you do a brief research, you will discover that most of the hacks that has happened in the past has been due to the use of online wallets, they are very sucure and I would recommend them anytime.

Hardware wallet prevents you from doing a number of mistakes you could have done otherwise.
Any wallet can be safe if you know how exactly to secure it and even a hardware wallet could be hacked if you are careless.
So, it's all about your using habit. A hardware wallet is necessary if you have 10s of bitcoin or equivalent to keep. Otherwise any app wallet or web wallet would still do a good job.

Hardware wallet is very safe to store your keys.
But, no system is safe, keep your hardware to safest place.
Not your keys not your wallet

Never buy used hardware wallets, other than that they are safe if you intend to use them as coldstorage.. Ledger has some nice picks where you can hold a lot of different cryptos.

As always, every electronic device is prone to death so keeping priv keys written in paper and kept safe is always the wise thing to do.

Hardware wallets are safer than web wallets or app wallets, especially ledger Nano and Trezor brands. I've used both, they are cool but I prefer Ledger Nano since I consider it more rugged.

You are absolutely correct that hardware wallets are fully secured from all attacks and work as cold wallets. No one can access that wallet other then the holder of it.

Sincerely hardware wallets are the safest and are not that vulnerable if the seed is not accessible by third party. Most of the time people complain of their hardware wallet being hacked, they forgot that they have exposed their seed in one way or the other. If seed is not exposed then hardware wallet is safe.

If hardware wallets are not safe for someone I don't know what is the definition of "safe"  for that guy. Paper wallets are not safe compared to separate hard disk as a crypto wallet. I never believe the power of online exchanges because there is no guarantee for funds in any exchange.

Of course hardware wallet is safer when it comes to security of asset, the level of security is hard to crack, the issue is that not everybody can afford to buy the wallet  but it's better to have it to avoid loss asset.

Yes, they are safe, the only problem or where the issue might arises is that if you bought it from somewhere else, like Ebay or something. You don't know, someone might tampered it to hack and steal your coins. That's why it is advisable to buy from the official site only to avoid this kind of problems in the future.

@Olatunjex - those wallets are very cheap, so everyone should really get it so that you have a peace of mind.

of late I have been reading different bug fixes of some of these hardware wallets and no major loses about them either....guess it's all about correct precautionary use.

TBH no one will guarantee you safety if you don't follow the best ways of protecting your coins  such as not using public networks or PCs as they might be infected with malware, not sharing private keys and all. AFAIK The hardware wallet won't safe guard your coins without us doing our part of using the wallets correctly and safely.

never seen someone call it a purse before  ::) :D :D
But yes, hardware wallets or software wallets that let you transform your mobile devices into cold storage wallets are the safest way to store bitcoin or any crypto for that matter.

But software wallets can also be safe if you are an advanced user that knows how to keep your machine clean of worms and malware.

Atleast hardware wallet will give you comportable for the attacker as long as you keep still it in offline. The attacker just only can stole our asset when the asset connected to the internet network, I never heard there is someone who got stolen from their hardware wallet. But I think hardware wallet just suitable for those people who chooses long term investment, mean they will keep this asset on the hardwallet without touched internet connection but if for some people who use it as short term investment more over for trading field is not suitable. It will be useless if you keep your hardware wallet connected to internet.

Hard wallet is safer than web wallet or paper wallet because you dont have to using private key to sending coins.
But once your wallet gone, you won't be able to send the coin in the wallet address anymore, except you have backups.
So, you must deal how you store the hard wallet safely so it won't lose or damaged.

See nothing is safe by itself if the owner of the asset is nothing but a idiots. There is always a risk that anything could be hacked but the risk factor is less if your asset is in hardware wallet. I knew w there is people that are saying that  hardware wallet can get hacked. If that is form a reputable company like ledger nano S or  treanzor the risk is not that much. But if someone get physical acces to your wallet then it's a big problem. So laways be same a nd be careful.

Security is on your own, because software wallets are vulnerable to hacking, so it is true that hardware wallets are the most effective now without hacking by anyone because the concept is offline, but of course the security you want to know is because that all returns to the accuracy of someone in caring for a wallet not using the network or opening a site is not important because it has the potential for hacking, even if using wallet software if it is clever at securing it will avoid the risk but it is better to use a hardware wallet.

I think that hardware wallet is safer the software or online wallet. We can manage our portfolio securely in our hardware wallet without worrying about hackers and other things. However, it is expensive enough. So you must prepare the fee. So far, I never heard about the big problem of using a hardware wallet. Am I wrong?

I have big trust with hardware wallets and that makes me more confident that the portfolio I'm keeping with my ledger wallet is safe and secured. There are new hardware wallet competitors in the market but I'm off of trying them out. I'm not saying that they are scam but for the meanwhile, I'm very happy and satisfied with the wallet that I use now. Trezor is also okay, these were the 2 giant hardware wallet companies that has been trusted by the community.

I think with the recent hackings and stealing of funds from exchanges and online wallets, it is really best to have your own hardware wallets for every coin you hold. You are the one controlling the safety of it and not unknown individuals from the net. Even famous exchanges are prone to hacking so you should be prepared on this scenario.

I believe it so,  but remember we can't keep them all for the lifetime. And if we can only make transactions without internet will consider almost a hundred percent but we can't. But in terms of security it will be more safer than of online wallets and that's makes thing prone to any hacks and losses all our efforts and money.

Exactly, we really have to trust our hard wallet its the best and safest wallet on cryptoworld or else we are on a big risk. Paper wallet is not good, it can be stolen from you and it can also be tampered. I do have online wallets but I don't trust it honestly, I'm still using hard wallet at the end of the day and so far I don't experience any kind of hacking incidents. You have to secure your bitcoins and other coins, hard wallet is the key.

Hardware wallets are safe so long as you buy directly from the manufacturers and use a reputable brand such as Ledger Nano or Trezor. Also, it's important to continually update the firmware, as firmware updates patch up security holes that are found.

Avoid second-hand wallets.

there was a chance for offline wallet to be infected by malware and it doesn't have a lot of security measures and hardware wallet will be a winner if you wanna try to create such a comparison between offline and hardware wallet.
offline wallet has a lot of possibility to get the security breach.
I prefer to bet anything on the hardware wallet rather than keep my amount on offline wallet.

You already made your point and what it really is know. There is no doubt about it, hardware Wallet is the best.
Ever since I have been hearing and reading about compromised wallets, I have never seen any complaint on the use of hardware wallet. As a matter of fact, you have the full and only control over it, except you decide to reveal your pin or security details to a third party and you have to hand the wallet over to the person.

I think before he buys any hardware wallet, he needs to learn about how to use the wallet so he can save his coins without any worried. He needs to secure his wallet from the hacker, and he needs to save the private keys for every wallet he has. It is better to have a hardware wallet and save it into one place we know and don't let other people know what we have in that wallet.

You can also add an encrypted passphrase to your wallet for an added layer of security.

what say u?
more than the online wallets the hardware wallets giving hundred percent security when comparing to the online wallets but whenever we are storing our cryptocurrency in any kind of way if we have some kinds of people to know that it will definitely not safe for you

I choose Trezor. The security of this hardware wallet is also manifested in the fact that it can be used even with computers infected with virus malware. During operation, the wallet does not ever transfer passwords and keys, and the transaction is signed offline on the device. Trezor's cryptocurrency wallet supports work with a number of official wallets. And most importantly - it can be used even in the absence of a laptop by connecting it to the Android device.

There are other hardware wallets but among them Trezor is mostly preferred.
I'm saying that this is really safe compared to web and wallets that are attached online but not totally in the sense
it is 100% safe. There are tendency of loss of funds like lost of that hardware wallet or any other natural calamity or even being broken.
This is why always have that seed or PK kept on other storage like written on a piece of paper for having 1 or more copies.

You lost the wallet and hacker will find out the pin code.
You lost the paper with the words and situation for the hacker is much easier.

Yes, they are the safest wallet for the cryptocurrency! But you have to be careful! Like you have to keep the phrase codes very secret, never store your phrase on online, do not take pictures of your codes, just write down phrase codes in a paper and keep that in a safe place and try to use the official cable! If you follow these simple things, then your funds will remain safe in hardware wallets!

I love hardware wallets, I have a ledger nano.
They truly are secure.
I have seen some genius hacker hack a ledger once, but I'm not concerned.
In order for someone to be able to do that, they would have to physically get a hold of my ledger.
(and also have the skills).
That ain't happening, it's in my safe.

I used to just do cold storage with paper wallets.
It was free, totally secure, and easy.
But after I started to get cluttered with so many addresses and keys, I just put it all in my ledger.
It's been great.

Hardware wallets are the most safe wallets out there but it depends on your way of keeping it. because if you still mess with its security feature I mean if you expose it on somebody. It may be steal or lose you need to put it on something that no one knows about it except you.

I think everyone believes too that hardware wallet is still the best and safest means of keeping your cryptocurrency, and as you said, you are not Prone to any form of security threat that is common with online and desktop wallets.

The only reason why people may not just be using it as it ought to be used is the fee attached to it, its financial commitment could be a little bit high for some people I think, which are usually done on yearly basis, and another issue I see with hardware wallet is that it cannot be used by those that are careless, although if lost can be retrieved once the phrases and pass coded are still being remembered.

The hardware wallet is very safe to keep all of the cryptocurrency, and we know that the hardware wallet supports almost all of the coins, so we don't have to worry. The hardware wallet doesn't have to always connect to the internet, and we can save it in the safe place which only we that will know the place. Many people have already use the hardware wallet because they are a concern with the safety of their coins, and they don't want to see something bad will happen later. The price of the hardware wallet itself is not too expensive so we can buy 1 or 2 hardware wallet to save the coin and we don't have to keep it in the exchanges.

However, even hardware wallets are prone to attacks including physical attacks to abstract keys, fault attacks to disrupt a wallet’s chip causing faulty behavior or hacker access, and side channel attacks, which involves a hacker “listening” to the chip’s electric or electromagnetic signature to gain access to the device.

Hardwallet is most secure thing to store our coin or token. But if we are keep our coin and token in website wallet like MEW should be safe as long we keep private key secure and not share it to anyone.
The important thing is we should not hold our coin in exchangers wallet because hackers always want to find a way to hack exchangers and stole our coin

Yes, it's true, but hardware wallets aren't actually very safe because hardware wallets are also vulnerable even we can lose our money when the hardware we use is damaged. Yes, but I think the hardware wallet is the best now, and we are fully responsible for what happens to our money. Of course we need to maintain the device we are using to minimize damage.

Definitely, we can make it safe even using online wallets but you've tried for a long term storing then,  hardware wallet was good at that.  It guaranteed to have a safe keep, only we need to put our keys in a safe place also to avoid from from losing it which seems to be hopeless if it will lost cause that's the only way we can open our wallet back.

It's true that nothing is safe but hardware wallets conduct updates so if they find out some faulty on their software, they are updating it immediately so that there will be no backdoors open for their hardware. MEW is good for those who can't avail hardware but coins to be stored there is limited just for ethereum and erc20 tokens. While having a hardware wallet, you have more security and you can hold the supported coins that it has not just those two types.

Offline wallet is also safe but can still not be compared to hardware wallet. We can only compare offline wallet to online wallets which both of them still share some security issues in common.

Most offline wallets can still be hacked, because there is no way you will use offline wallet without still at one point connecting your system to internet, and there are sites you visit with internet that has so many malwares purposely designed to spy into your system activities.

Once these malwares gain access to your offline wallet unknowingly, it could be redirecting all your transactions to an unknown place that a scammer has designated, wherein all these are not going to be seen in a hardware wallet.

I think they are, I mean if you pick the market leading ones they are pretty safe. Like if you get nano ledger s or trezor they are pretty safe but they are of course lacking some small coins as well since they do not support a lot of coins, however if you deal with only the big ones they do support like as much as 20+ coins so you should be fine.

My friend had a ledger nano s he used to have and he lost it for a lot of months but he still had his key phrase with him he found that so he was not even worried, anyone who got his ledger nano couldn't break into his wallet and take his money out so he knew he was still secure. Of course he found it after couple of months in one of his bags :D but it was still showcasing how great security of it was when he wasn't worried about the potential of all his money at someone else's hand.

thats true but updates are not bad , infact updates are good because an upadate means improvement whether its an improvement of the security of the wallet or they will add more service but i dont think that there will be a flaws during or after an update  . other than that, hardware wallet is still the best and the most recomended wallet above all other online wallets out there  .

But not everyone can use the wallet, because the hardware wallet requires a PC to be able to connect. There are currently 6 Harware wallets that can be connected to Myetherwallet, Ladger, FINNEY, Digital Bitbox, Trezor, Secalot, and KeepKey.

You can also add an encrypted passphrase to your wallet for an added layer of security.

what say u?

Although im not using hard wallet to store my coins, many peoples recommend to using it because the security.
When you have big amount of coins, you should using safer wallet like hard wallet to keep your coins safe.
Trezor and ledger nano are the most popular hard wallet i guess.
The hardware wallets are the safest option for holding big cryptocurrencies. Keepkey is my first option after the advertisement by Shapeshift beta platform.  I don't like to risk my hard earned coins with online wallets and it is also not recommended to use desktop crypto wallets.

thanks for sharing your experience using trezor,
because i don't use it, i just use my ledger nano from 2017 until now, and i have no issue with my hardware wallet
so, i think a hardware wallet is safer than any others wallet  ;)

yes it is the safest way to store your Bitcoin and other coins in the cold wallet/storage. When you have your coins in the HOT wallet on an exchange, it is always prone towards hacking and is not 100% safe but if you are a trader, you got to have some coins in your HOT wallet as well. Depends on you if you are speculating for a year or day trading.

hardware wallets are safe when compared to online wallets in a sense that they are solely controlled by you unlike online wallets which are controlled (I  mean the website's servers) by a third party so when the site is offline, you lose everything even if you have the password as most of them do not provide private keys. It is better to use a hardware wallet if you fear a website may steal you and I personally use them because most of them do not have access to your private keys as they do not keep a backup of your keys.

Enjin wallet is the next big thing, Binance may come with a hardware wallet too! I must admit wallet hardware is safe for storing crypto. However, I myself have never used it and don't have it yet. Everyone certainly wants to have a hardware wallet for the security of personal assets. hardware wallet is one recommendation for every user who has a large crypto asset to use it. Well, you have a good point about hardware wallet. It is really safe to have your wallet offline so that it will not be connected to anythinh in the internet but we should be very careful when accessing it because virus can be activated even offline. It can gather information then transmit it when it gets online.

i agree on you when you say that there are online wallets that are safe . this was the reason on why i kept on using online wallet and i never get myself a hardware wallet  . itll only depend on the user if how cautios enough on handling his account   .

if you know what you are doing you will never find any issues on using an online wallet but of course except from natural events like when the main wallet is down or if they have been hi jacked because that isnt your fault already   .

Authorized resellers are the only people are allowed for trade the hardware crypto wallets. It is not safe to buy the used or new hardware wallets on the Ebay and similar electron shopping sites.
It is definitely necessary only to buy hardware wallets directly. It is not very safe when we buy wallets on trading floors or shops.

then hardware wallets would be the best choice or even those air-gapped pc/laptop would do but when it comes to handy thing then these wallets are much more recommended. Its not totally safe yet 100% isnt impossible since these are prone to damage and lost thats why you should really be sensible on backing up everything just incase for unexpected things might happen.

Wallets are recommended where you have the private key or seeed to rephrase it later. Every time you have your private keys exposed online you can be possibly be hacked. That doesn't mean that you will be necessarily be hacked.
There are so many peeps having their coins stuck somewhere because they have no access....
Same result like hacked!

Most people that has had viruses enter their system is not because they purposely want to  visit some fishy sites, in this internet world where we have so many people that wants to make money from ad adverts, you see even genuine sites approving Facebook ad and some of this ad which you can mistakenly click on contains these viruses.

Therefore, the best any crypto user can do is to make sure they install a very reliable and strong antivirus tool to protect their system, and for any of their wallet, there is need to encrypt it with a very strong password that it will take the hacker over 100 years to crack.

I think these hardware wallets are not bad to store your coins in if you are not trading over an exchange. You would be very safe from a hack that could affect the wallets over the exchange but in this case, you would not be able to trade your coins for money. The benefits that are there if you keep your coins in hot wallet are way to more than if you keep it in cold wallet.

if at any time we are exposed to phishing or spam and we accidentally give our PK to someone else, they still cannot access our wallet because our wallet is still on our computer.
Therefore, I am very confident that wallet hardware is the safest and most impenetrable wallet.

Soon I want to try to used this hard wallet once I could earned from doing bounties because as of now I'm not yet earning from it, but hopefully there will be.  Base on my research
"Make sure you NEVER buy a TREZOR or any other hardware wallet from eBay.
Only buy from the TREZOR store or from Amazon".

What's wrong with eBay?

Because hardware wallets are storage devices, they can be hacked like any other storage device.
The hardware wallet uses internal encryption, software that provides users with access to the private key stored in it, and hardware components to facilitate the operation of the device. Do not be fooled into thinking that storing all your private keys on a $ 100 hardware device provides physical protection, as demonstrated by frequent hacks and government hijackings. Even the manufacturers of these devices explicitly state that you should make sure that no one will have physical access to your device. The functional cogs of a hardware wallet, which in essence is just a dedicated storage for a private key, are points of attack. These security levels, which may seem effective, were not as secure as it may seem that a storage device, such as a hard disk, could be hacked.
If the hardware wallet is captured, lost or stolen, hacking the storage device exposes the key inside. Therefore, it gives access to all assets of the protected key.
Any storage device can be hacked.

Don't get it twisted hardwallets still use private keys and that doesn't make it the most secured wallet ever ,you will still need online connection to send your coins so I don't see the difference much between a mobile wallet with private keys

It cannot be guaranteed 100% if the offline device is one hundred percent safe because theft of our offline devices can occur at any time, but when compared to online devices it can be said that the offline device is a little safer, and hacking will be difficult for offline devices.  unless they steal our smartphone or PC device to be manipulated manually

Yes, and now they have the app on the googlestore and you can basically use your phone as a hardware wallet. The problem is you can only make one wallet but they plan to change this in the future.

hardware wallets are safe when compared to online wallets in a sense that they are solely controlled by you unlike online wallets which are controlled (I  mean the website's servers) by a third party so when the site is offline, you lose everything even if you have the password as most of them do not provide private keys. It is better to use a hardware wallet if you fear a website may steal you and I personally use them because most of them do not have access to your private keys as they do not keep a backup of your keys.

The problem that often occurs in our wallet is hacking and the safest way to prevent it is to always look at wallet website security when visiting it. Besides that, always don't visit suspicious website links. But if we have a lot of valuable coins, hardwallet is a safe choice

As mentioned  many times before an anvirus-software can be easily bypassed (and quite often leads to a false feeling of security) and therefore there are only 2 really secure ways of storing your crypto-assets - a hardware-wallet or isolating your private-key from the internet and signing your transactions offline. By the way: The password of your keystore-file (=encrypted private-key) might also be stolen if you're infected by malware; it's still better than using the plain private-key if you don't have a hardware-wallet but still not secure against malware-attacks.

I am agree, Antivirus might detect malware but I think antivirus is not everything because hackers are now very sophisticated. In my opinion, as long as we visit a safe site and always be aware of suspicious links, maybe we can secure our data and wallet.

You can also add an encrypted passphrase to your wallet for an added layer of security.

what say u?

Indeed, many recommend using hard wallets because of the high level of security. Now many android wallets are good and safe enough to store our coins but storing in the hard wallet will certainly be safer. And to be safer, we must also be aware of the websites we visit, always check the security of the website

Yes.. I'm agree 100000% with your opinion about hardware wallet. I think all of most crypto enthusiast must have this , because ? No any doubt about security on wallets , 100% safe & also easier to use. Yes.. Like Trezor Wallet , this wallet has a small-size wallet.. Trezor Wallet physically looks like Flashdisk USB (Trezor Wallet will be used on PC/Laptop too , also on Android).
But sometimes we can't got Trezor Wallet with cheap price , almost all Trezor Wallet price is little bit expensive. I think its worth it. Little bit expensive price on one Trezor Wallet and a one Trezor Wallet can keep secure your crypto assets.

the disadvantage of hardware wallet is that when a virus attacks the computer, the wallet will also be in trouble and we will lose the moment to access it. different from online wallet, even though our computer is damaged or is being hit by a virus, we can still access it as long as we still remember all the keywords. that way, I think hardware wallet is safe but more risky than online wallet.

I think this is a good idea in terms od security issues but I am also think that there is only limited network that can innovate their system using that hardware wallet. I open my mind in this idea but not today. I need to wait some more time to make it improve and more people will use and try it to be sure that I will not experience some trouble in my transactions. This is a great idea but needs to much upgrade and innovation to make it possible to use by everyone.

hardware wallet is the safest way to store cryptocurrency.. as long as you keep your seed in safe place no one can take your crypto

I have never heard about any incidents in which the coins were stolen from hardware wallets. But in case you forget the PIN number or lose the 24-word seed, then it becomes almost impossible to recover the coins. But one thing that I don't like about the hardware wallets is that they are not very user-friendly. It is a bit difficult for people who are not very tech savvy to use them. Ledger Blue is somewhat better when compared to the other wallets, but even it needs a lot of improvement.

hardware wallet can only be used for long-term storage of funds and therefore it is often not necessary to use it, and therefore it is safer.  But if you constantly deal with cryptocurrency, then you very often need to complete transactions.  This means that the degree of risk always increases.

150-200$ for a hardware-wallet would be quite expensive.
You can get the Ledger Nano S for $66,27 USD, the Ledger Nano X for $133,66 USD (only worth it if you need Bluetooth-Support and/or more storage to use more apps simultaneously without having to delete another app to free up space) and the Trezor One for $77,50 USD directly from the manufacturer.
If you decide to buy a hardware wallet Trezor, be careful when buying, order only from the manufacturer, and carefully check the package for opening - this is very important!

Nothing beats a good ol fashioned paper wallet kept in cold storage.
That's where you just write down your keys and lock em up in a safe.

But for those that want to be tech savvy, hardware wallets are the way to go.
I use a ledger, and it was a bit pricy (around $100) but it has worked great.
They are ultra secure.
In order for someone to be able to steal your crypto, they would have to physically get their hands on the device and your passkey.
They are also really handy because it stores a huge variety of different cryptos and can interact with erc20 wallets.

As far as i know hardware wallet is most safe crypto wallet, But it also most unecassarly thing, because I think offline wallet is already safe enough for current attack possibility or current threat unless the attacker using quantum computer to steal your money which is not gonna happen unless you have that much money to pay their bill.  ;D

Yes, hardware wallets are the safest and most secure because you are in charge at all times. I think it is the praticality of decentralization in real life. Also, with hardware wallets being offline, you don't need to bother about any security threat at all.

Hardware wallet is the safest place to store crypto at the moment. There is no way to steal info about your Private Key if the wallet is kept offlince, so if you are a long term holder, just sent your funds to a hardware wallet and forget about them.

nither hardware no online wallets not 100% safe. both might be hacked if owner will not observe simply rules of their safty using.

Then in this case it will not be possible to call it a burglary, because the mistake was made by the owner of the wallet.
Cold wallets are the most hack-resistant wallets at the moment.
because the wallet per lift hard separates the private key from devices connected to the internet. Your assets are practically safe from threats such as fraud and hacking, but return to the user to keep their wallet from all possibilities.

I agree. The safest wallets of course are hard wallets. This will insulate the wallet from illegal activities online, such as hacking, that might compromise the wallet's safety. But we need to realize also that if we use our coins for trading, it is expected that we are also saving some good amount in exchange wallets. Coins stored in hardware wallets are good as sleeping.

Hardware wallets are safe, but if all security rules are not followed, the hardware purse may be compromised
What security rules? are there any other security rules other than using your hardware wallet, keeping your private keys on your own?
And writing down the keys on a piece of paper and never on any internet connected spreadsheet/storage?

You can also add an encrypted passphrase to your wallet for an added layer of security.

what say u?

I was thinking of buying Trezor or Ledger Nano S these days because I don't have plans in storing my precious assets in exchanges and centralised crypto wallets.

As of now, storing it in a hardware wallet is the safest of them all. I just need to plug it in, transfer my Bitcoin and other altcoins, and plug it out.

However, there are disadvantages as well such as being damaged by shock, dust and water, and getting it misplaced or lost. We just need to take good care of it.

Having hardwallet I think is necessary if we have a large portfolio. In addition to security, hardwallet is safer than hackers because it is not connected to the internet. Whatever type of wallet we use, it will be safer if we do not share a private key or seed word because other people can access our wallet

Hardware wallets are perhaps the most secured and trusted wallet. This is because they are entirely offline and entrusted in your care, if it gets compromised, then it means you have out the keys. Hardware wallets is also making waves as most people keeps using it owing to its security nature. Another wonderful feature is, it is easy to carry about.

Agree, its still depend on us, on how we manage our assets, the bad thing about using hardware wallet for me is that, it can be lost for some reasons and if you have mo means to retrieve or you were not able to back up, it will be nothing and nonsense and a waste of time, but over all if im gonna compared the two wallets, id rather choose online wallets over hardware wallets, why? simply because online wallet is easy to operate and can be open everywhere, you just need an internet connection and you are good to go.

Ever since hardware wallets were created they have successfully helped users within this space to maintain security of their assets as convinent as possible. There is no need to worry about any type of security breaches or cyber attacks as your coin is right there with you. Hardware wallets really shows what it means to be "decentralized", how? You own the keys to your wallet and can access it when you want to.

Use a regular desktop wallet and encrypt it. Encrypt everything, even a folder.

Hardware wallets are the best, in terms of security most especially. There cannot be any wallet safer than that. Unlike hot wallets, hardware wallets cannot simply be accessed by anyone through the internet. That makes it effectively unreachable to a certain extent, most especially during these times when hacking is becoming a bigger problem.

Just make sure that you buy the hardware wallet directly from a reputable source, and not second-hand or from unknown web site. There have been cases where the software inside the hardware wallet was modified such that the private key is fixed and known to the seller, so any funds you deposit will be lost.

Your wallet does not need to be online in order to lose your BTC. Your BTC is stored on the chain and is tied to a private key.

That said, the chances of randomly guessing your private key is astronomically hard.

Hardware wallets are obviously safer, but it doesn't mean they don't have their own drawbacks. Private keys of Web wallets or app wallets can easily be stolen if care is not taken. For example, people install strange keyboards which might be from scammers/hackers and their wallets get hacked through that means. Hardware wallets are more secure, my best picks are Ledger Nano and Trezor.

Safety doesn't depend on what type of wallet do you have. It all depends on how you manage your wallet. Even with a hardware wallet but you are not really taking care of it then it is still useless and you might still experience some incidents like getting hacked or getting your cryptocurrencies stolen. On the other hand, if you are really careful and you do all of the precautions then hardware wallets and even the online wallets are really safe.

I'm a huge fan of hardware wallets, and I've used quite a number of them.  Not only are they secure, they allow you to store essentially any altcoins you want on them (at least most of them do).  You could use a multicoin wallet like coinomi on your smartphone, but what happens if that phone gets stolen or you lose it?  You aren't carrying around a hardware wallet all the time like you do with your phone.

The only security issue of note is keeping the seed phrase safe and remembering all of the passwords and such, but that's true of any wallet that uses passwords and phrases.

If anyone is getting started with hardware wallets, I would suggest getting a ledger or trezor.  They both function wonderfully and they don't cost that much either.  I love mine.

If you have bitcoin for several thousand dollars, you should think about buying a hardware wallet. In the future, it could turn into several hundred thousand dollars.
Even if you have less than that or if you own an assortment of altcoins a hardware wallet is still worth considering.  They really are cool devices.

Depends on the skill level of those who use them. That level should match to technicalities of hardware wallets, if not,  then  there's a chance  to loose all even with those wallets.

Hardware wallets are made to be used as a safe device to store your crypto so they ought to be safe. But still the safety of your coins largely depends on the ways you use and store them and their seeds and private keys. A carelessly used hardware wallet maybe riskier than a properly used desktop wallet or even a web based wallet.

Yes, they are very safe, all you need to do is keep your seed safe. Hardware wallets are adviced or preferred because once your seed are safe then your coins are safe. They are safer that web and App wallets. Generally, no matter the wallet we are using, we should endeavour to keep our seed and private keys safe.

if you keep a private key, it is better to write it in a notebook. if you want to store the token safely and have no money on Trezor or similar. you should download the coin wallet, throw it on a flash drive and store tokens there.

Of course, most attacks are conducted online since it's easier and vulnerabilities may be present in the system of the victim. Especially if one uses pirated softwares, embedded with keyloggers or clipboard fetching softwares. If one's not so careful, he might be fooled by some phishing sites. There's no 100% secure system, it really depends on the user's carefulness on handling transactions. As long as you don't install anything malicious, connect using secure networks only, and be alert on online activity, you'll be fine.

Yes as long as you have your private key, you can assure your crypto investment.
Even if your own hardware wallet will be damaged, you can still open it with the same hardware wallet using the same private key to access your wallet. It is safe because it is accessible offline. Every information of your wallet will not be leaked to anyone who tries to hack your private key because it also has a PIN which is needed before having a full access of the wallet.

It is safe thogh you have it with you physically but the downside of it is it when you lost in somewhere and cannot be found anymore. On the other hand, software wallets is somehow good since it plays along with the account itself so, you have the concurrent access with it, and at the same you can have multiple views. What I mean to say is that you have the access in different platforms unlike the hardware wallet. But the thing is software wallets is prone to hacking, while the other one isn't but prone to losing it physically.

You can also add an encrypted passphrase to your wallet for an added layer of security.

what say u?
There is no doubt about the safety of our funds in a hardware wallet. I bought a hardware wallet for safety purposes, all of my funds are in my hardware wallet. I can ensure that there is no one who can hack my funds inside my wallet.

Why is this sudden concern about the hardware wallets? I have never used them (partly because purchasing them here in India is not very economical. I need to spend $250 to purchase a Trezor wallet which costs $100 in other countries). I have never heard about hardware wallets getting hacked and the coins stolen from them. The most frequent complaint that I have heard is the coins getting lost, as a result of the user forgetting his password or private key. But in this case, the user should blame himself for the carelessness and it won't be fair to blame the wallet for that. It is a very basic thing to store multiple backups if you are using a hardware wallet.

yes you are right a hardware wallet is a safe way to store our bitcoins. if something bad happens to our computer bitcoin we will stay safe. even I heard there are some hardware wallets made by Butterflylabs that can avoid the dangers of viruses, hardiness and waterproof. as long as we store the seeds well. our crypto wallet will be safe.

Purchasing a well established hardware wallet should be a no brainer for everyone that is holding a hefty amount of crypto funds, even if that bag is worth only 500$. Brute force attacks on hardware wallets are rare, so if you are not totally reckless with it, you should not worry about it, but be sure to purchase it from the official sources and not some shady ones via whom you could save 10 or 20 bucks.

I think we must observe to which of the two will be compatible on your preference. For now, we should choose whether it's a hardware wallet or an online wallet, as long as there's confidentiality of those important keys which potentially be breached out of your security.

Seed key is like a privkey it's just as important so yeah I do agree that saving a seed key to a safe place is the most crucial thing when using a hardware wallet. Most of the people I know that uses hardware wallet are always encrypting their seedkey with any means and adding security measures for their seed.

However, it just seems not worth it for people with cryptos' value that equals to pennies that's just simply wasting time. Although using hardware wallet is highly recommended for people with a low amount of money a desktop wallet should fulfill all the needs.

Ya, but 20 exchanges are ridiculously high number and you don't even want to check them one by one lol and I doubt those 20 exchanges are even legit to store your own money. I'd rather just store in 3 - 4 exchange those are really legit if I want to store it in exchanges.

It is not a good idea to store your wallet seed inside your desktop especially when it is always connected to the internet. You should store it offline and keep it safe and dry and also away from people that can use the seed and bypass your wallet. You should not share it to anyone unless you are dying and you want to give it or pass it to another person that you trust.

Hardware wallet is very safe to store your keys.
But, no system is safe, keep your hardware to safest place.
Not your keys not your wallet
Both software and hardware wallet is safe in order to store our keys, it only depends on how we will take care of our keys in order for us to be safe on losing some money. Yes, it is true that no system is safe for hackers and we all know that because although the system is hardly secured a hacker will also have a way on how they will take down the system and steal our money.
So that it reminds me that we must be always careful about storing our wallets in the safest place as possible, and we must really secure our keys and wallet and avoid clicking phishing websites in order for our money to be safe.

Indeed. If you are considering exchange wallets better to think twice there's no assurance that they can prevent or avoid hackers to attack them, aside from that there's also possibilities of inside job or exchange exit excuses. It's advisable to have hardware wallet if you are here for longer stay.

If you do plan to make this venue for investment and business purposes, having hardware wallet will save your assets much safer.

It's best to use hardware wallets, also there are some universal wallets with good reputation and performance, whereby users have total control of their private keys like Trust wallet and Atomic wallet.  If I'm holding so many coins, normally I'll sort for a universal wallet to atleast WATCH my holdings even if I don't want to import (that's if I decide using the official coin wallets). Even with hardware wallet, you can still lose your holdings if you don't back up properly.

Hardware wallets are mostly safe but upon picking a certain wallet. Always choose the one that is tested and proven to be a trustworthy one. Be always aware that corruption is a problem in there, you should make sure that you wouldn't do anything that may cause your wallet to be corrupted. Make sure also that the security is handled with many verifications so that if someone would try to get in, hack it and steal your money, you are well assured that it is very safe.

Yes. Hardware wallets are safe especially Nano Ledger N and S but be sure you won't open any suspicious mail coming from "nano ledger team" as that is a malware that will most likely steal your coins. Lately a lot of spam mails are coming to those who are having their data leaked somewhere so make sure before you open anything , check their website in order to see if they actually push an update. Also don't talk with friends or any other people about you having a hardware wallet as I wouldn't trust no one when it comes to your crypto wallets and private keys.

Hardwallet is the safest type of crypto wallet.  It is not prone to hack the online type of wallet.  Most bitcoin whales uses the hardware wallet to store their huge bags of crypto coin and keep it safe.  It is safe because it gives the owner full and total control of the wallet without any third party interference, the owner is in custody of the pass phrase and him alone can acess it. It is very difficult for hackers to have access to hardware wallet except if the owner was careless with the pass phrase. Other than that crypto coin cab be stored inn hardwallet with nothing to worry

Surely using hardware wallets is the best way I can think on storing up your assets because it is away from online world which means it is also far away from potential hackers that are trying to access your accounts online to steal your assets upon logging into unsecured site. Just like online wallets, hardware wallets do also provide safety features to secure your cryptocurrencies in a sense that you are still conveniently holding up your assets into your hand in which you are the one who is capable of having an access on it which makes it more private compared to online wallets. You just have to be responsible on taking good care of your seed, password or private key you have used to access your assets and be mindful not to share it to anyone. Being away from online is the safest people could think if they see that hackers are everywhere in the internet world. So using hardware wallets suits the need of a crypto user to take good care of his cryptos without worrying that anyone can access it as long as he keeps the informations private.

If you are the type of person that have doubts about storing your cryptocurrencies in an online wallet, then having a hardwarw wallet to store up your assets will suit your preference because you are storing up your assets away from online world which makes it safe and secured as well as far away to the hackers range. What you just need to do is to of course take good care of your hardware wallet which you will keep in the safest possible place you only know, keep your seed or private key or password you have used to secure your wallet and ensure that you will be the only one who can have an access to your wallet. Even your most trusted person must not be trusted with the information you have about your hardware wallet because even those you trust can betray you. But if the case you have a short term memory loss, ensure that you will leave clues you are familiar with to get into your hardware wallet.
