Title: Will BITCOIN run out in 2140?
Post by: Perindu on July 10, 2019, 08:41:57 AM
I forgot the article that says about this.
but I remember that, reportedly Satoshi Nakamoto intentionally created a limited amount of bitcoin inventory. This is done to prevent inflation. From long-term predictions, BITCOIN has at least until the year 2140, all of which can be mined. If the number of Bitcoin continues to decrease, the price can soar in the future. how do you think about this, is it true that BITCOIN will run out in 2140?

how did 2140 bitcoin run out ??
for now, only less than 15 years, there are only 20% if we accumulate from a stock of 21 million coins.
21 million x 20% = 4.2 million coins. this is more or less the rest and already in the mine is 16.8 million coins.
16.8 million coins were mined in less than 15 years, exactly 10 more years, if the average bitcoin per year in the mine reaches 140 thousand coins or 1,680 thousand per year from early bitcoin.

and in my opinion nobody knows when bitcoin will run out. every second there is always an exchange with this coin. but if it's true that bitcoin will run out and most likely have an impact on the price of bitcoin which will soar, this is only my estimate, I hope I'm wrong.

If you take a look at Bitcoin's 10-year history, some of its actions are so fast, it's hard to think about 20 years from now!

What's the difference? We won't live to see it. Personally, I think that bitcoin will replace something more innovative during this time. Do not forget about quantum computers that can hack private keys.

Quantum computers are only in your dream. there was a lot of experts are saying we have a lot of algo that already quantum resistance. The possibility of quantum to hack privatekey is very small. Don't worry about that.

I have never seen or read about an article that discusses bitcoin which will expire in 2140, so I cannot answer or provide information about the wrong or correct related to it, at least you have to provide an article link to discuss this so that everyone here can react well.

Yes, I have also never found a discussion article about this, but I once knew and heard the story that Bitcoin was deliberately limited to making it easier for everyone to be mined later. I am also not sure whether it is true or not, I only listened to stories from people about it and did not know the truth until now.

There is only one thing, have already invented a quantum computer, and as soon as they start using it at 100%, then bitcoin mining will become so fast that it’s not possible to talk about some 100 years. Since the team bitcoin still does not want to solve the problem with asic, we should expect in the near future 10-20 years of falling course, but for now there is a chance to make good money.

I'm not sure about that, but today more and more people know bitcoin and altcoin so that the bitcoin miners are also increasing. If that keeps happening, I think the opinion about 2140 bitcoin is running out will really happen.

To be sure, I just heard the news about the article that you mean, related to the bitcoin stock that you mean, I think only time will answer, but if you see from the supply of the number of bitcoins at this time it seems that Bitcoin will never run out, even though the supply is always decreasing day.

this is the main value of Bitcoin. no one can increase its number. thanks to this, BTC price will constantly increase

yes, the bitcoin will continue even in 2140 because of the large number of investors here so I'm sure that it is still the crptocurrency leader even at this time because the only bitcoin is big potential.

Bitcoin is only ten years old and yet so many things have happened after it's creation, now it's hard to do an analysis and prediction over 100 years, we do not have an idea what would be the landscape of the internet and our world by that time, we must take it year or at least make a prediction or analysis, where we can have a grasp of reality.

How is this related to altcoins? Weird to post this in Altcoin Discussion.

But yeah, that's when the last Bitcoins will be mined.
From that point forward, miners will be rewarded with the transaction fees included in every block mined.

Working as intended... Nothing weird about it :P

The world we are in will Also one day runout. So i won't dispute the fact that bitcoin can runout and that there will be nothing to mine again.

In order to control this, a update that we all know is coming up, which is bitcoin halving. So his will increase the shelf life band prevent it from running out so soon.
So if its running out in in 20 years time for instance, it will be doubled and in 40 years time, which is a good strategy.

I think all of these are just more on expeculations, nobody could really say how long this BITCOIN will run out. For now, we will just continue to work and hopefully this would not stop as everyone don't want to happen.

Do you mean all bitcoin are going to be mine in 2140? Yes, that is correct and we may not see that day. However, we are already closer than you think. Circulating supply is almost 18 million now. Obviously, supply are going to dwindle, and if there are more demand the price could sky rocket in the future.

I wondering if bitcoin already running out, the demand still greater as much as now, we can see 1 satoshi worth as $ 1
Of course anything can happen from government's policy until any regulation that support or against the crypto.

So if you already made some profit, it's better to keep it in your pocket

This is when block rewards for miners will stop, which is still pretty a far years to come. So miners will have to rely on transaction fees as a reward to keep the ecosystem running, before then, the price of bitcoin must have been high and reward will remain very attractive for miners.

Yes, According to the source code written by Satoshi Nakamoto, then we will not exploit the new blocks of BTC. But, maybe no one here can live until that day  ;D

That's a fallacy, Bitcoin won't run out at the stated year. Bitcoin's architecture was well built, talking about running out you imply it diminishes in quantity till its no more right, which is a mere illusion.

It is impossible to say for sure when all the bitcoin coins will be mined. But it is worth noting one thing, as long as Bitcoin will be bought, its price will increase. So this is a very good reason to invest in this coin for a long time.

Indeed, the reward for the block will decrease until it reaches 0, approximately in 2140, but the network will continue to exist and the reward for miners will be the commission from transactions.

If the miner only gets a commission from the transaction, there will be no miners, because the reward is so small. I think that year, bitcoin cannot be moved anymore, it can only be moved from an exchange between users.

This is what is called a deflationary system. Over time, the total amount of an asset can only decrease, which naturally increases its value. You should not worry that when all possible coins are mined by miners, the network will stop, because miners will receive a commission on the amount of processed transactions. Satoshi Nakamoto was a damn smart guy  ;)

Interesting insights. I'm sure I won't live for 2140 years. But that's a hypothesis. Even if bitcoin is completely dug up, it will still be held by many people. Of course, prices will certainly rise. One hundred years from now, the world is unpredictable. There may be more advanced technology in the future.

I won't be around when it happens but I think that as long as people will hold Bitcoin. No matter if its 100 or 1000 years as long as people will be talking about it and will be using it as an actual currency then I am pretty sure that it will be strong. Also since we are in the Altcoin section I am going to add that there are many altcoins that would also be a potential replacer of Bitcoin. We have the strongest of them all Ethereum and Litecoin also. Dogecoin might come out of obscurity and become a potent force in the altcoin markets.

No one knows when bitcoin will run out, it could be before the year 2140. Logic and calculations are like that, because every day a bitcoin transaction will occur and of course it will reduce the supply of bitcoin. Logic is simple, if it is less, it will certainly be more expensive I think that is very clear, in my opinion bitcoin will continue to soar as demand. Thank you.

This is what makes Bitcoin a great investment because of the absence of inflation, we are still a long way to 2140 all of us here are not living when that time comes and it's hard to make a prediction, 100 years from now, we do not know what would be the real picture on the internet or our life in this world would be.

I’m yet to understand what you people mean by saying that Bitcoin is running out? Like how? – do you mean whether it will all reach a stage where you wouldn’t see any Bitcoin to buy? If that’s what you mean then it’s sure not going to happen. If it’s like you think it, then buy now you might not have Bitcoin to buy because a lot of people are just going to buy and store it without minding whether the price is going to fall or not. Bitcoin is not going to finish, even if all are mined, people will still continue to buy and sell.

What will you do if BTC still runs out in 2140? Are you still alive? Or you want it for your sibling and others? Well, don't think too much and too long. It is better to think for this era, or about 10 years later. It is more real than thinking in the next hundreds of years.

I think all Bitcoin will be dug in 100 years and it will officially no longer be dug. But I think it will not exist until that time. You know, the technology of Bitcoin really goes down and it's getting slower and slower.
When the crypto market becomes more popular, many people use crypto for faster money transfer and payment purposes, I think Bitcoin will have no place in the crypto market anymore.
it will gradually lose value and then disappear from the market. The alts will start to throne.

The great thing now is that bitcoin and blockchain have become a part of people's lives. It is difficult to diagnose images that take place in such a long future. 2140 - Bitcoin halving last, synonymous with great value. Can pass the threshold that we can think of. 10 million USD? lol

If what you mean by "running out" is that no new bitcoin will be created by 2140 then it definitely will run out. But a constant growing price  (deflation) and a new mining fees will compensate for this.

Miners will get rewards from mined blocks only from fees. That means that only 2 possible scenarios: 1. High fees in BTC value or 2. Low fees in BTC but with high USD value.

By 2140, the last bitcoin will cost an astranomic amount of money and hardly anyone can buy it. Perhaps the extraction of the last bitcoin will occur much later end due to the complexity of the extraction. No one can give accurate predictions.

I think not. Even the last drop of Bitcoin is mined. Bitcoin will be circulating just like money. It doesn't make any sense if they even use it for something. Unless you keep it and you forgot it. For sure they will use it but something. Also it's not a big deal to me because we have mbtc and satoshis. If you can't buy a Bitcoin at that time, we have that denomination to choose. That's the purpose of making them. Just like Ether for ETH.

How wished that this could happen. If it happens, i will like to witness it and not only that, but for me to have some at hand. The occurrence of such thing will bring about scarcity in btc and that will translate into extreme price increase. Perhaps, it might be the time that the threshold price of btc envisaged will come to pass.

Its only for the last bitcoin to be mined but the value of bitcoin will still remain in 2200 or in 3000 or so on as long as there are holders for it.
No, the price won't remain the same. Again, if there are holders, the price will bound to rise. After all bitcoin has been mined and the cap has been reached, scarcity will start to be created when adoption of crypto currencies take place. The amount of bitcoin is limited, but the population is not limited. The more the people starts to acquire and hold bitcoin, the less number of bitcoin will exist in the market driving more demand and causing the price of bitcoin to rise. Simple economics.

Bitcoin will not end in 2140, this is the ultimate date when all 21 million bitcoins will be mined. However, I think this will happen much earlier. Technologies are constantly being improved and either will find a way to extract bitcoins before this time, or the need to continue mining will disappear. The reasons for this may be completely different, including changes in technology and the transition of a cryptocurrency to a higher level of development.

There will be no more new mined Bitcoins plus you have to think about how many Bitcoins will be lost and then think about how many people could use it in the future = 1 million dollar is highly possible for 1 BTC if everything goes smoothly.

I mean if the number of bitcoins decreases, chances are that market demand is increasing or bitcoin users are unlimited due to their high value.

It is assumed that all supply will be mined by that year. And when it happens, most of the miners will continue to mine and they will do it to confirm transactions. That will be the time of scarcity for bitcoin, demand will increase for sure but we dont know what will happen next if we manage to live up until to that time.

I don't think it makes sense to look that far and wonder what will happen in the future. The future is unpredictable and anything can happen. Perhaps there will be some kind of replacement bitcoin. We'll never know. But the price of bitcoin will not grow if there is no demand for it.

but I remember that, reportedly Satoshi Nakamoto intentionally created a limited amount of bitcoin inventory. This is done to prevent inflation. From long-term predictions, BITCOIN has at least until the year 2140, all of which can be mined. If the number of Bitcoin continues to decrease, the price can soar in the future. how do you think about this, is it true that BITCOIN will run out in 2140?

My question is, are we still alive in 2140? I think we are discussing too far, and it is impossible to answer at this time. Indeed, the target of Bitcoin is long term. Every day the Bitcoin miner continues to grow. I think that in less than 50 years Bitcoin will run out in the mine. Bitcoin stock is very little.

In the context of prices it is very dependent on the world's rulers. At present the ruler of the world is Satoshi Nakamoto, even though we don't know him. He was present not to be remembered by anyone, with his program that was so great.

It is possible that the next decades of technological developments will become increasingly sophisticated. And a new hero will be born. If he agrees with Bitcoin, then Bitcoin will survive. If not, they will develop new technology and leave Bitcoin or Blockchain technology.

I think no one knows when it is to run out. Everything has time to end and i think in that year 2140 is very far from now such that it is possible that bitcoin would run out at that time. Even now there are only few bitcoins left to mine, so in that long period of time bitcoin i think is not used, or let's say there would be a replacement for bitcoin. But time could tell in the future what really happens and will occur about cryptocurrency.

There are so many unknown variables and unpredictable factors that are at play in the nascent Crypto world, that mineable BTC running out

in 50-100 years should be the least of your concerns... Changes in blockchain technology, new functionalities offered by crypto currencies,

market sentiment and use value / added value will be some of the more immediate factors that will have an influence on the price of BTC...

We can't say a serious statements for that idea since it was predicted bitcoin wi be more expensive as it grows older. There's no concrete  predictions to when it runs out, and it's very unpredictable. What will happen in 2040, I am hoping that everything will be more digitally oriented and cryptocurrency will be our main spending utility instead of physical money.

One can predict just as you have said that the price will soar, the major challenge then may be that some users will hoard btc when they know the time is near for mining to stop. This will definitely inflate the price making some people madly rich.
My opinion is: 2140 is still very far,  no one knows what will happen before then. BTC may not even be in existence then for the evolution of technology

If I was Satoshi Nakamato, and my priority was not make quick bucks but create an ecosystem which survives and alternative to the the present money system I would allocate some funds to fund miners or the system to prove the chains. The account of Satoshi remained untouched and probably will be at that state till mining era is over. That is the way how a mathematician or strategician thinks.
About Bitcoin, yes many of the altcoins will disappear with lots of money however a bunch of cryto currencies that BTC is amongst will survive at 2040.It is not something absolute but my probability calculator system tells me 63%.The system is written by me and may be error prone so either write your own p.calculator or make decision/scnerio trees it is up to you.

I don't think that will happen. because BTC is the biggest crypto in the world. although often the price goes down but there are still many users who invest there. with the increasing number of users, of course there will be times when development will occur to continue to supply and handle many users. I am sure that before the year 2140 of course the number of BTC will be developed and added to serve the many market demands.

What do you mean run out? That there wouldn't be enough Bitcoin in the world? That is simply impossible to happen.

When all the 21 million Bitcoins have been mined, it means the miners will only be depending on the transaction fees. Meaning to say, business as usual. Everything goes on smoothly. If you are bothered by the billions of people in the world and the very limited Bitcoin supply at 21 million BTC maximum, don't be. There are 8 decimals points in the value of BTC. If we divide all the 21 million BTC supply to the total world population at 7.7 billion people, everyone would have 0.00272727 BTC. That is still a large amount considering that the smallest value would be 0.00000001.

I do not know this clearly about this issue because this news is confusing without clarity and there are various arguments that differ. But recently I read about the rest of the bitcoin blocks that can be mined at https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Controlled_supply.

Some say bitcoin can be mined for 136 years until the supply of bitcoin runs out and that means 2140, if we calculate it mathematically it will produce the answer above. Now per block of bitcoin is worth 12.5, which means that when hardfork in 2020 will be 6.25 and you can count onwards until the supply runs out.

The number of Bitcoin doesn't continues to decrease, it keep increasing, just the minned BTC decrease. In theory, by 2140 the total number of BTC will be fully mined. At that time, the BTC will be a place to store assets, and I believe that the BTC will increase prices in the future.

I think you are misconstruing the message of the OP, you probably think he means bitcoin will face out by that year, but I think he is talking about the supply, which the technology has already been designed to have limited supply of 21 million coins, and out of these total supply, if you check coinmarketcap history, you will see that over half of the coins has already been exhausted and we have less than half, so it depends on the level of adoption we have now that will determine when the remaining part will get exhausted, but I believe that what is left is too small for it to extend to that long year.

Within the next 20 years, bitcoin supply will really run out and the price will become very expensive at that time now, and that is why some people envisage that the price may reach 1 million dollars in future.

Bitcoin has limited supply, only 21 million coins will exist in 2140.
But you have to calculate with number of lost coins. It is easy to loose private key from Bitcoin wallets. So there will be less than useable 21 million coins and more and more  of them will be lost in the future.

We can be free to predict Bitcoin, but maybe by then we won't be witnessing it because maybe we no longer exist in this world. I believe that Bitcoin will grow very high in the next 10 years so the holding at this point is still very good in long-term investment. Base on the mining time and the number of coins to be generated , it was a year to finish the mining as the halving reward is due every 210,000 blocks which is a possibility for them to be mined by that year or just some months before that.

That's what forking is for.

If there needs to be an upgrade to the Bitcoin protocol even once the newly minted supply runs out, then the miners can simply implement a code change as of block X.

There shouldn't need to be a spin-off, or transfer of any kind, since Bitcoin is designed to be updateable from within.

this has been a debate for bitcoin supporters and critics for years , its because of Bitcoins limited supply.
that is why i am 50/50 on this adoption thingy, there are so many probabilities
when time comes if Bitcoin will be well established and have a huge network of users
it may either be extremely volatile or might be stable and predictable so it may replaced Fiat.

yes , that right .
The last Bitcoin is estimated to be mined in 2140,when the block reward would drop below 1 satoshi.

If the number of Bitcoin continues to decrease, the price can soar in the future.

basically, yes. but on nowadays we still on,how can i say, stabilization maybe,i just think , let say BTC same like gold at the beginning.
the point is, as time goes, people will know exactly what is Bitcoin. and they will try to think about it.

It is unlikely that until 2140 Bitcoin will continue to exist in its current form. If it exists at all until that time, then it will probably change very much, and if necessary, its production will also change. In any case, it’s too early to think about it. Especially to us who do not live up to this time. It is believed that a generation of people changes every twenty years. Based on this, six generations of people will be replaced before 2140. Therefore, you should work with what is now.

From long-term predictions, BITCOIN has at least until the year 2140, all of which can be mined. If the number of Bitcoin continues to decrease, the price can soar in the future. how do you think about this, is it true that BITCOIN will run out in 2140?
It is unlikely that until 2140 Bitcoin will continue to exist in its current form. If it exists at all until that time, then it will probably change very much, and if necessary, its production will also change. In any case, it’s too early to think about it. Especially to us who do not live up to this time. It is believed that a generation of people changes every twenty years. Based on this, six generations of people will be replaced before 2140. Therefore, you should work with what is now.
I also think that Bitcoin may have many more outbreaks and the technology will be improved. And it is even possible that some fork more technological will replace the first Bitcoin.

The main question is not whether all the Bitcoins will be able to mine, but whether the Bitcoins will survive at all by 2140, because this is too long a period of time.

Yeah there is limited supply of around 17 million btc that has already been mined and available but the remaining 4 million can only be mined in over 100 more years this literally shows the deflationary design of btc. Each btc halving reduces the mining reward by 50 percent decreasing mining supply so as a result the demand and price grows this model is outstanding and that is the reason why long term hodling is recommended to gain huge on btc investment.

I don't understand how bitcoins can be shortages for some reason. In any case, this coin will be traded on the market. The market is the main catalyst for value. I do not exclude that in the near future the price of bitcoin can jump up sharply. But that won't change anything. Bitcoins will not be less. Maybe people will forget their wallets or lose hardware wallets. But roughly speaking the infinite bitcoin.

we can only predict, but I think 2140 has been transferred over several generations, for example people die and do not inherit their private key wallet, so this can reduce the amount of bitcoin, I think the prediction is also reasonable, considering there are still 121 years to go. but technological development is not stagnant, but will develop continuously, so that later of course there will be new innovations to overcome them

I doubt that this prediction can become reality. Nobody can even predict what happens to bitcoin in just a year let alone of in over 130 years time. We saw what 2018 predictions about bitcoin turned out to be.
And, besides, none of us currently on early can possibly live that time to see if the prediction will come by.

Although bitcoin has a limited supply of coins, but I am not sure if bitcoin will run out in 2140, at this time there are many who trade and invest with bitcoin, the point is that as long as bitcoin is still used for trading or for investment it will not run out.

I think it won't be that long for the current times, the proliferation of many miners will increase mining faster, Bitcoin is only going to be rarer but not longer when more miners are created, I think it's possible. In 10 to 20 years time, Bitcoin can be reversed, my personal opinion is that.

it's hard to predict if bitcoin will still run until the year 2140 but the volume of investors here and the bit of revenue here will still be bitcoin because I'm sure over time the value of investors will increase here.
You are right mate, sentiment aside, we can only hope that bitcoin continues till that year, but only God knows exactly the future of bitcoin, but from what I am seeing and from what I can sense, I think that bitcoin still has very long future which will run into decades, if bitcoin were not being accepted by governments, I would have doubted it but governments too are beginning to use bitcoin for severally purposes also and which I believe that the cope will expand as time goes on.

If within the next 10 years, bitcoin really gained a solid root within the governmental system, then it is for sure that this technology will go far beyond even 20 years more, and probably we will be seeing it from where we are also after were dead, at least we might still be privilege to know what is going on the world.

Although Bitcoin was fully exploited in 2014, at the time I thought that the transaction costs were also very impressive at that time. At that time, the miners could also mine, just to dig up the transaction fee, and in fact nothing changed.

If bitcoin is even around that long, which is a big if, I think people will eventually agree to keep the inflation rate at a suitable level of 1-2 percent instead of having no new coins minted.  Remember that everything at first is just temporary and not set in stone.
