Title: [Feature Request] Personal Notepads
Post by: Steamtyme on July 29, 2019, 03:09:08 AM
What I'm looking for is just an on forum personal notepad with all the features of a post. I'm not sure how hard this is but it could serve the purpose of a better draft system for people creating original content or larger formatted posts. It could be a place to paste links to posts/topics or any other resource or reference you want to keep for the future. You get the point it's whatever you need it for, and it's a personal notepad. I know on a few occasions I've hated relying on the current draft system to reload a post I'm working on or going back through them to find the best format after trying several out and previewing. That's just one example, there's numerous posts or topics I like or reference I lose track of sometimes, it would be nice to have a list of links when I need them.

I bring this up because I personally use the forum from 3 devices and switch between them regularly. I'm sure I'm not the only one so this has the benefit of following my account wherever I log in so I can pick up where I left off. It would also be beneficial because it's there until you delete it, unlike a draft of any sort that is gone after 100 (previews, posts, messages). I get that it would take up forum resources and I don't really know how that works. If it's limited to the same capacity as a regular post, would it have the same impact as an account creating a single post? If not it could always be limited further, and I imagine there are many people who wouldn't see the utility in this feature for their forum use.

I'm sure it would be helpful to people but I'm not sure how much of a priority it would be to theymos. Just either keep them in a post and preview it every so often so it stays there or even better just PM them to yourself or save them on a computer notepad or some sort of cloud service so you have access to them whenever. I usually just keep things I'm working on in a separate tab with the post previewed but not submitted so I have access to it whenever I want.

Or just create a personal thread on the Archive board. I’m sure you can do and post all you want there.

Host your own forum without any members. That's what I do.

I'm pretty sure Theymos isn't willing to add in updates to the current iteration of Bitcointalk, besides security updates.

Seriously though, I think you're better off just creating a text file and store it on your cloud storage(e.g. Dropbox, NextCloud, etc) so you could access it on multiple devices. I don't think there's a need to complicate it a bit.

PM them to yourself

This. Clunky but works and is "cloudy" enough (i.e. doesn't rely on files saved on your PC/phone/whatever or some google/apple contraption). You can use labels to make it easier to find those PMs.

Probably depends, it sounded like he had planned to add the reporter badges to the forum before the new iteration, but I'm not sure of the status of that anymore. Plus, we don't exactly know when the forum will be migrating to the new forum software. It's safe to assume somewhat soon due to other forums now running the forum system, but our version of the forum might be a little different with Bitcointalk specific features.

Personal notepads on the other hand would probably be very low on the priority list like Hilarious suggested,

This would be a nice feature to have although I don't think its necessary and can be accomplished other ways. I have saved threads and posts I like on a spreadsheet which I can access on all devices if needed and just to be safe I also keep a local copy of a text document which can be transferred to the different devices if you needed too using a dropbox like website.  I would usually recommend against using any cloud service but because the information inside the text document wouldn't expose any personal data if anyone got into it I think its fine.

Instead of a personal notepad it would be nice to just be able to save specific posts within a thread so that you could later look at your "saved" list and refer back to it when members ask certain questions which are related to your saved posts.

Really? I totally thought that the reporter badges are reserved for the new iteration. With that said, we've definitely been waiting for a while *ehem* *forever* for the new software unfortunately. I've been seeing frequent commits and activity in general on the Epochtalk GitHub repo though, which is definitely a good thing I guess. Hopefully it wouldn't take longer than I'm expecting.

As far as I remember the reporter badges were meant to be implemented into the current forum software, and if I remember correctly theymos even stated he was hoping to do it by a certain time frame. Unless, I'm remembering incorrectly which is a possibility. I'll see if I can dig up the post that I'm thinking of.

In the meantime its definitely not mentioned as a "new forum software" feature, and was posted here in Meta, and not in the new forum software section which indicates it was for this iteration of the forum.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! Makes me want to make several more badges for different things, though I don't know what they'd be for.

For the original purpose, my favorites are:
https://i.imgur.com/5KVaanK.png (https://imgur.com/5KVaanK) 300 good reports
https://i.imgur.com/9FKbRtq.png (https://imgur.com/9FKbRtq) 1000 good reports
https://i.imgur.com/GwFdzIL.png (https://imgur.com/GwFdzIL) 5000 good reports

I suspect that it will always be difficult to know what any mushroom cloud icon is if you don't already know, though.

I'll probably add it next week sometime. The icon can be changed easily either before or after it becomes public, though, so additional suggestions are welcome.

BTW, currently 195 users would have some icon, and only 9 users would have the highest-tier one.

So here is the quote I was thinking of. Theymos states that he was originally going to implement it a week after the quoted post which obviously we have now surpassed. I'm not sure the reasons, but I imagine more important things cropped up.

I'm sure it would be helpful to people but I'm not sure how much of a priority it would be to theymos.

I was sort of hoping it would have been implemented by the time I woke up today but Mondays are tough.  :P

Definitely was just an idea I thought would be a cool feature for the forum at some point in time. I know we aren't anywhere near the adding and testing things out for convenience or utility, there are systems current and future that are far more pressing. I had considered the Pm option but am not to keen on a new PM for each addition. For now I'll just continue on as I have been doing using drafts and trying to manage a better "watchlist".

I do appreciate all the suggestions for workarounds. I really don't use a lot of online services like dropbox. I only started using imgur when I joined this forum so I could post an image.

Or just create a personal thread on the Archive board. I’m sure you can do and post all you want there.

This was a thought and something I believe I used to create one of my topics. The only issue I have with that is sometimes I may want the information to have at least the same personal privacy as a draft. Until I post or act on something no one really needs to be able to read the potential content or monitor what I'm interested in at the moment.

I'm pretty sure Theymos isn't willing to add in updates to the current iteration of Bitcointalk, besides security updates.~snip~ I don't think there's a need to complicate it a bit.

It's hard to say what sort of updates we might continue to see added, look at the merit system. I'm pretty sure New forum software has been on the books since before I was a member so we don't know how long we will be using this form. I'm not looking to complicate things just offering an opinion on a feature I think could improve the user experience, based on my usage.

I'm also as I said blissfully unaware of how much of an undertaking it would be to implement or whether it would be a drain on forum resources. There are plenty of unknowns I have no clue about that may make it not worth having.
