Title: How to protect your crypto before death?
Post by: Abiky on October 18, 2019, 08:34:29 PM
If at some point in time I come across death, how would I actually preserve my crypto for other family members to enjoy? I mean, this should be a concern to every crypto enthusiast since all the money they've earned over time could easily be lost without the ability to be recovered by someone else. The decentralized nature of crypto, leaves us responsible of protecting our own funds no matter what.

Which is why, I'm eager to know which are the best practices to preserve my cryptocurrency in case I die in the future? Any recommendations or suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

get a tattoo with your private keys (QRcode even?)
don't tell anyone about it
when u die your loved ones will either find it, or you can leave the details about it in your will :P
Even if u die naked with no ID, your crypto keys might survive that way haha

But if a stranger who's playing around accidentally scan that, you'll be sorry.

@Abiky, I think that you should be prepared in a way through talking to them. Like giving them some idea on what you are preparing and just tell them the truth that in case something unexpected happen to you, they will be secured. Just leave them a set of instructions including your private keys.

You made my day :D I have thought about the crypto holdings after the death too but making a tattoo is the worst way to hold the private keys in the recent market conditions. The single downtrend can change my opinion and I can aks the new tattoo with the new private QR code. Taking the risky decisions is not my cup of tea but I think about the fireproof paper which I will write down my private keys in the future.

There are some coins that will not last for long, which invariably, cannot be preserved or saved for generations to come or for anyone to inherit. However, they can be converted to currencies that might likely last for long. For instance, they can be converted to BTC or other top coins that have been established.

I also have the same thoughts as you, that's why I have been preparing from now on teaching my family about cryptocurremcy, at least how to open a wallet and exchanger, after that tell the password,
for PK stored in a safe place and provide instructions if one day suddenly dead can open it.

I have seen some platforms to handle the inheritance of crypto assets. You can use them to secure your crypto assets. Or you can try to follow some tips based on many articles/books, just googling and choose the best one. The point is how you can note your asset's data and let someone you trust to know it.

Example of articles/books related to the inheritance of crypto assets :

It'll be really difficult, and the problem would be how you can give over private keys to your wallets, but then make sure they don't get stolen or hacked and only opened when you die.

You could go the lawyer route, give them a USB with the private key that only people who know you well will be able to open it, and then when you'd die, the lawyer would hand over everything to you.

There are also some asset management plaftorms that can handle these things for you. Look at the post by kawet, he links a couple.

First, I save the privatekey that I use safely. Because this is what will show our assets to others. Second, I always teach my wife how to use or whatever is in the crypto world. That way, my wife is not technologically illiterate and she can access my assets any time. Yes, of course I've given her my privatekey. Yes of course, by teaching her in advance how to open a wallet with privatekey, how to sell it, and how to change it to FIAT. I think it's very easy and simple.

I've entrusted several people I know with one key of several that can be combined to authorize a transaction from a multisignature bitcoin wallet, and I've also given the location of some of my cold wallets and/or their private keys to my family members as well. I'm not one to leave all my eggs in one basket, so even if one of these wallets fails somehow, there's still at least some of my crypto out there somewhere. Most people in my family aren't too tech-savvy either, but I've also left some basic instructions on how to actually use private keys at the location where they're stored, so that should (hopefully) be enough.

The best way is to share what you know to the people closet to you. But sometimes it gets difficult when the people close to you are not tech friendly.
As for example of myself, my parents are old and not tech friendly, my brother is a stupid and doesn't wants to listen to anything I say. My girlfriend is a curious one but there's no point on sharing with her before our marriage. There are a few friends who are into crypto and my parents knows I hold some money as crypto. I hope in case of my death they'd be able to assist my parents to retrieve the money.

That really depends though, on how much you'd share with them. If you just have electrum on a laptop you carry around, it's fairly easy to access and your friends will easily be able to retrieve funds, but this is quite different when it comes to other devices like a hardware wallet.

I've entrusted several people I know with one key of several that can be combined to authorize a transaction from a multisignature bitcoin wallet, and I've also given the location of some of my cold wallets and/or their private keys to my family members as well. There does seem like to be the most practical and easy way to solve something. Using multi sig with your friends/parents so they all need to have something to be able to access your funds - great post.

Actually that's a big concern everyone who are doing crypto arent probably showing off their precious private key or something to recover their asset. When uncertain accident happened like the person died. It is probably gone forever without knowing that he maybe has a huge bitcoin holdings or altcoins. This will considered an addition to burned supply of the coin or token. So I'm looking for a good way on how to deal with it.

With people not sharing their private keys to fortune, it would not only make you and your family lose the money but also decrease the overall supply of the respective coin. Which could ultimately lead to the death of the coin itself. The best way to safeguard your funds is to personally share your passwords and private keys to the ones you believe in.

I do not think that far and this will be my preparation when the time comes, and I will plan from now on to give a password or private key to one of my family so that the bitcoin or altcoin that I have will remain well protected and can only be opened or used by my family later.
thank you for reminding me because I have not thought that far because outside of my mind, it sounds simple but is very meaningful.

this is a topic that sounds a little funny. why are you worrying about that? even as long as we live, our crypto will always run out if prices rise. and if the market is falling, we don't even care to buy anything in crypto.

Honestly there is no other way and easiest way to make sure that our crypto will inherit by our family or in our next generation. We need some back up which our family can based or know our private keys whem we are already dead like writting it on the piece of clean of paper together with your other password and your atm bank account to make them familiarized about your crypto and crypto wallet

Thanks for the tip. However, most of my family members aren't that tech savvy enough to understand cryptocurrencies in their entirety. I could leave some step-by-step instructions, though. But I wonder, if they'll be able to follow them precisely. I often use passwords with 50 characters in length in order to strengthen security. Encrypting my cryptocurrencies with such a long string of characters might be difficult to access in case of any undesired situation. Of course, I can write it down on a piece of paper. But even that could be exposed to someone not authorized.

I was thinking that maybe a multi-sig wallet would serve well its purpose for preserving my cryptocurrencies in case of death. It's easy enough to generate keys for specific family members so that 2 out of 3 keys could successfully unlock my crypto balances. If somehow the process of releasing crypto to loved ones upon my death would be fully automated (via a smart contract or something), then it would be a blast. In the meantime, I'd think it's best for me to prepare a video with in-depth instructions on how to unlock my crypto balances in the case of death. :)

Why we need to protect our crypto if we die? maybe he will revive in time and use again her crypto funds.. I think thats sounds funny too :") but in my opinion why do i protect it if my relatives can? they're knowledge is the safest way to protect your crypto funds. with them you dont need to worry because it is in the good hand and you know they use it carefully and they can grow it even further. be in peace they can handle it.

This is a very long and realistic thought about life, and I hope you understand that death can come at any time.
I personally give full trust to my family, even though they don't completely understand crypto, but they can learn it to understand how to manage my asset inheritance.

All you have to do is write a letter and submit your wallet to your lawyer. Or you can also buy a hardware wallet and store it in a (valuable) box and then tell your child, will give this box when you die, if your child knows that you have crypto, this case will be easy. What I recommend the most is to say it now to your family before you die.

In my own personal opinion, the ways how i will protect my cryptocurrencies before death is by only telling one of my closest family members which is my siblings that i will tell where i hide all of my hardware wallets and private keys, so they could access it if i die. Hiding all of your private keys and hardware wallet in a small vault will be also helpful to protect your cryptocurrencies.

There's nothing better than to let someone know your stuff. It might be risky 'cause they may possibly spend your crypto without you knowing it. But the thing is if you're not in your capacity to be able to spend it anymore, at least there is somebody close to you who will be able to manage so that your efforts just to obtain such amount won't just go to waste. Nothing's wrong on letting someone know your thing. Besides, you have your own decision to choose who's worthy of receiving it.

I guess a piece of paper where everything is listed down detail by detail is enough. That would include wallets, private keys, passwords, pins, seeds, sites, and detailed instructions as to what steps to do to recover all of them or convert them into fiat. This would be easier if someone in the family is also familiar with Bitcoin or crypto. If not, the instructions should be as spoon-fed as possible to make sure not a single satoshi is wasted. Perhaps a detailed will is also good, which clearly assigns how much is for whom.

We all will ever face such a problem. First of all, I would try to teach my relatives how to work with cryptocurrency, at least at the user level, so that they can use it. However, I would leave behind some of the most promising types of cryptocurrencies, and I would sell the rest. If cryptocurrency would be difficult with the training of relatives, most likely, it would be converted into normal currency.
However, almost always death comes to us unexpectedly. Therefore, a significant part of the cryptocurrency will regularly be lost forever.

In life, it is good to always trust someone and this is where such people play important roles. Storing of login details to ones wallet on flash drives is good. Here, you can store the details on different flash drives and keep them in different locations where not only a single person can locate all the flash drives to attain the login combinations. After doing this, you can tell the trusted people one location each after which when you're dead they will come together in order to retrieve all the Flash drives for the login combination.

Perhaps, we should tell them and teach them how to use crypto so they can learn by themselves. And if the time almost comes, we can give our crypto to them and tell them that they now can use your crypto. With some explanation, I think they will understand, and you can choose the right person to continue with what you're doing. I am sure if they can use the wallet for a good thing, they will not use it for the illegal thing because they are a good person that has chosen by you.

You should choose coins that will not die in the next 10-20 years and renew that frequently. You can leave a note after you are dead, and tell them to act quickly because you can not expect this kind of action from those who do not know how to trade in this market. Or you can teach him/her to trade but s/he should always be aware of the best and make the right investment.

Set up an nlocktime transaction.

Essentially, it's a dead man's switch. A transaction that can only be executed at a future date, and if you're not dead by that date, simply send the funds to another address that only you have access to.

I'm not sure if this is something that is available with every single blockchain though. For alts, you'd probably have to go with a custodial service, or simply trust your will recipients with a private key (hide it somewhere perhaps).

Share your private key or recovery seed with someone who makes your life meaningful, at least your hardwork won't go to total waste and deep down you will be happy, if you have kids its better to get a lawyer and put that in plan, it will be useful for your kids when they grow up

there are several ways to be able to secure the cryptocurrency that I have before dying, one way is you can recap all important data from the private key and a place for access to the wallet or cryptocurrency that you have after that you can print it with the title "Important Inheritance Data For Family "and keep it in your cupboard or under your cupboard, after you die it will definitely be dismantled one day and your family will find out and your assets will be disbursed again.

First and foremost, your family must know that you are involved in the world of cryptocurrency if you can, you also invite them to join you, and you must be open with your closest family and you can say that you have saved your bitcoin wallet later somewhere it's safe for you.

If you want to protect your cryptocurrency before you die and you want to make sure that your cryptocurrencies will not become a waste then you should enlighten your family about cryptocurrency and how to use and navigate your wallet. It is better if you will have a hardware wallet as your storage because it is safer and much better in terms of passing your cryptocurrency to your love ones.

It's best to say it immediately to those you trust. You better print out a copy of your private key and keep it in the vault with your important documents, And indicate what to do to open the wallet.

You also indicate who will go or who will have the share of your wealth left behind. With this you will have no problem thinking of things you will leave in case you are lost in the world.

If you trust your family enough to tell them your wallet address as well as your private keys, there will be no problem about you leaving your crypto behind. There is no company or procedure or law that I know of that offers this service yet. So, the only choice for me is to leave them a printed copy of my address that I hinted something that can help them when something unexpected happen to me. Not that I wish for it to happen soon. You could also do this but have a lawyer leave the paper like a last will or something.

First of all, we must explain to a trusted family first, then make a video recording of how to log in on several sites such as the exchange market or crypto wallet. and explain if someday I die, sell all this crypto asset into money so that it can be used for useful things.
I don't need to protect my crypto assets, I just need a family that I can trust.

Write all you private keys down or buy a ledger wallet. I do not think it is difficult to watch a youtube video of how to use Ledger wallet. All problems would be solved within several clicks and your relatives will get access to your funds.

the problem is that if you now provide your data to relatives, then they may lose them or even worse show them to someone else. giving your keys to someone is not the safest action.

it doesn’t always have to be a family. many people have better relations not with family but with very close friends, for example. it’s important that this is must be the person whom you trust 100 percent

this is a topic that sounds a little funny. why are you worrying about that? even as long as we live, our crypto will always run out if prices rise. and if the market is falling, we don't even care to buy anything in crypto.

yes i know what you mean but i don't think it's just the OP or other users who worry about it, even i personally think about it. the reason is that no one knows the death of someone including you later. so it doesn't hurt if you start thinking about it before your family enjoys the results of your work while in this industry, then who will find out about your large investment if you die suddenly? before you even have time to tell the people closest to you, because you can't possibly pocket your investment to your final resting place? so think about it.

There is no 100% safe method to store your private keys. Even if you take a printout and store them somewhere safe, there is always a chance of someone stealing those papers and hacking in to your wallet using them. One method that I thought about is to share my private keys with some of my relatives and friends. But here the problem is that even among my relatives, there is no one whom I can trust 100%. Also, many of them would refuse to store my private keys, due to the risks involved.

i could tell you to save it in a backup cold storage, and tell where they are only to your family, in case you dead they can retrieve your fund, paper wallet are also good, but also brain wallet, if you for example memorize a seed associated with your private key you can easily get it, if you want

Your thought is very thoughtful and everyone involving in cryptocurrency should take it into account. Cryptocurrency is decentralized and others cannot get access to your portfolio if you do not share your private keys. The only way to transfer your portfolios to your near ones is share your private keys to the person you trust very much.

I’ve already tell my partner about bitcoin and I’ve already created a letter about it so my family wont be fight about the small money i left for them. Its not easy to secure it but trust only those who are close to you and you know that they will not do anything about it. If the death comes, at least we still have something to give to our family and we work for that money.
Done with doing the same thing. I already informed my wife with my holdings and teach her on how to work with my wallet incase of any accident happen at least they are secured enough to use all the savings. All my hadwork and invested time with my crypto activities.

Saving little by little as I understand that future will be good for this entire industry.

I meet several times for this kind of thread and I'll always answer that I have to trust someone who can be able to access my wallet. I just wondering, do you have someone who can trust you to access your wallet now? I you don't, it would be good you can trust him/her right now, expect you didn't have anyone.

For myself, I trust to my wife to access in my all activities in cryptocurrency. I told her that I have some exchange and there are some coin on the wallet which have a value and she can sell it when I leaving her. You have to think, what your purpose to make money, if it is just for yourself and you don't need to tell your prikey and all your activities on this field, it depend on your situation for sure.

This is very funny lol, but there is some sense in the context. Well, I think tattooing a QR CODE won't really help because what if you fall asleep or get drunk and someone scans it? There is a project on Vechain blockchain I know of, that has project aim to this regard. The name is Safe Haven, ticker is SHA.  The project aim is to aid in inheritance, but I don't know how feasible that is, or if they can actually achieve the project vision.

Only you should know how to do it as we don't know which wallet you're using right now. But if you really want your family members to take care of your crypto after your death then You should use a paper wallet to hold your crypto. After your death, they can use the private key & get access to your crypto. Though someone from your family should have to know how crypto works or basic knowledge of cryptocurrency. You can use a hardware wallet as well and keep the wallet information in your diary. Also, they should know how much you own in crypto.

teach your wife to access the crypto wallet in detail so they know everything, including making and securing it independently. Sensitive data such as pass/keys are written on paper and given as a will, only to be opened when you experience the worst event.

If you are not sure about this, then you should immediately melt it into fiat to deal with other possibilities. The point is it's important to give them knowledge as soon as possible before you die. don't trust other people.

i can across the same thread just few days ago related to this. think think someone suggested to create a paperwallet laminate it and put it in a container air tight and just pour cement to it probably upper ground. and tell that in your last willing testament where your coins are. not a really secure idea but it will work unless a bad blood will find out the first.  he will have to wreck a wall for it to be recovered, i doubt no one will notice him.

Tell your loved ones your private key, and if it's a natural death (except heart attack) you should have plenty time to let your loved ones know about your crypto.

Agree with you that there really should be a family that we can trust to be able to manage our assets if something unexpected happens so that our assets not only settle but also can be useful for them whether they are used for family or others

I don't have a will made out yet, but I do have all the information needed to recover the crypto I have written down in a notebook, plus I've told family members about it.  I think that's all I'd need to do myself, but I'm sure it would be different for someone who actually owns a ton of crypto (I do not).

For a whale or someone who has tens of thousands of dollars or more in bitcoin or alts, I would recommend having a will drawn up as well as telling the person or persons you're leaving it to how to access it upon death.  Goes without saying that you should be able to trust that person.

sudden death and death can't be predicted either right your assets will be lost if not put in a record ,make a map like a treasure and only family members can open it or more simply you must inform your family about all the crypto funds you have ,trust your family and dont be stingy because money will not be taken to die together

But still if you want someone to access your crypto after your death then go with your parents first, siblings next then your wife. Just tell them your private key.

This question has been answered I think late 2017. And you're a legendary member and for sure you saw that post. Anyway, I will just include here what I remembered and what I learned from that topic.
I remember that somebody said that you should tell to some people that you are involved in cryptocurrencies and then tell them about your private key.
I also remembered that you should pray so that the unexpected death of yours will never occur lol.

We do have a lot of ways now for us to protect our crypto, but as per me, at least one person that you trusted most such as your parents, kids or wife/husband should know your password, crypto wallets, so that in case of emergency, someone knows it and will have access to it. For me, it is better than keeping secret for life, we don't know what will happen tomorrow.

It's a good question, but it's hard to answer. Because cryptocurrencies contain very complex methods of protection. If your family knows nothing about cryptocurrencies, they'll probably never get to your funds. But instead you can transfer your funds to a single exchange and show your family how to get to that exchange.

Since I don't have much money, I haven't felt the need to do so. But people with a lot of money seem to be able to come up with a solution like this.

but, i probably sell all of my asset before i enjoying the my old day.
so, i have no worry about it.
but if u have a different plan,
well probably u must have some a personal accountant who will give  your valuable private keys after you die to your family. or a will may be enough.
or if u crazy enough, u can make some puzzle like davinci code on your cupboard.

If they are not that tech savvy, your idea of making a video with set by set instructions would fit that problem. By the way, why you are even thinking about this? I know that unexpected things might come and happen but why think as deep as this?

I can feel that there's something with this post and you're too thoughtful to your family. Well, I've prepared mine and given them a hint on what's a private key, what's ledger, etc. My video instruction will be followed.

Seconded. Giving access to one's digital account to a trusted family member or   loved one. It might be hard to do at first. I mean, I hesitated a bit because if you mistakenly give access to the wrong person, You might lose everything sooner even while you're still alive. But it's an essential and logical thing that everyone that owns digital assets should do. Many things can do wrong that's why I'm of your opinion of only picking someone who is trustworthy and only let them know after you've passed.

I think as in all cases surrounding protecting assets and ensuring they get inherited by the proper persons in situations of sudden death, one has to always confide in a next of kin by sharing sensitive details regarding your assets in this case (crypto assets) with a trusted family sibling or relative. This will ensure your digital wealth and assets get preserved in cases of sudden death.

Keeping printed records of your wallets can help. For example, my family knows what cryptocurrency is but they don't understand yet how I work here and generate profit. So, the best case to do is to print the infos needed to access the wallet as well as some important instructions. You can even ask a lwayer to put it in your last will if you want to.

Personally what I do is that; my wife have access to my wallets and my keys are been shared to my families. The private keys are shared in between my wife and my siblings because, haven only one person controlling my wallets may not be the best way to keep them after my death in the future. Basically if anything happen to me, the two person involved in the keeping of the private keys will together help our in finding the wallets and the funds out.

If keeping my cryptocurrency, will make my unborn children live life to the fullest or enjoy the benefits of cryptocurrency, then I would have done that, but most of the coins in the crypto space do not have such capacity. I would rather keep valuable, listed and highly ranked coins that I believe will grow irrespective of the time or what might be happening.

You could use a dead man's switch. There are several out there, and there is also Google's Inactive Account manager. If your gmail account has not been accessed in 3 months, you can set it to send an email to your family.

But emails can be read, so you might want to use encryption like PGP / GPG. You'll have to teach them how to use it and provide you with their public key so you can encrypt the message to them.

The message itself could just be a password or passphrase to an encrypted file stored on a USB drive you keep updated frequently with your private keys.

As long as you're alive, you can prevent the email from being sent.

Now, if you know your family can't learn or be taught how to use crypto or bitcoins, then you might have to ask a trusted third party to help you here, someone like an escrow who will take care of exchanging your coins to fiat for them and sending them the funds. You'd trust this third party or else your family would never get anything. In return you have a contract that will also pay this third party a small portion, since otherwise the coins would have been lost anyway.

Do you have any suggestion or trusted third party for doing this kind of matter? I think it will be hard to set up like this, since cryptocurrency isn't scope in the Law yet. Maybe on some country they started to draft something about this scenario. Hoping for youre response, thanks.

I think there are currently two simplest options:
- You can entrust a family member with copies of the private keys and passwords they can use to access the e-wallet in case you die, but such a scenario requires ask for absolute trust.
- Or you send a copy of your private keys and password into a safe deposit vault at the bank, when you die your loved one can get that information.

First and foremost, your family must know that you are involved in the world of cryptocurrency if you can, you also invite them to join you, and you must be open with your closest family and you can say that you have saved your bitcoin wallet later somewhere it's safe for you.
Lots of people die leaving huge amount of money in their wallets and a friend of mine passed on last four months with the same experience. For his case, we were able to go through his details on his PC to retrieve the Private Keys to his wallet. It is always good to have someone in the family who know you're into crypto. Later, it is good to tell the trusted family member where you have stored the Flash drives which contains the login details to the wallet.

I also want to leave a business that later when I die they can continue my business. therefore I always set aside profits from crypto to open a business. so that later my family will inherit two things, cryptocurrency and business.

Also make sure they know what is crypto and how it works. Save everything in your pc so they could just open it. They have the access incase something bad happens.

Things need to be done fairly easily, you only need to choose the people you trust to hold your personal key assets. From your family or your best friends. so that later if you are not in this world anyone will continue your crypto assets. It is a testament to crypto assets, it might be useful for other things if you are not there.

Do you have any suggestion or trusted third party for doing this kind of matter? I think it will be hard to set up like this, since cryptocurrency isn't scope in the Law yet. Maybe on some country they started to draft something about this scenario. Hoping for youre response, thanks.

I've offered my services for this exact use case to a few people ... they haven't gotten back to me. Would you like to be my first client? LOL. :)

I do escrow for plenty other types of transactions, usually people trading goods or services, as well as some multi-signature ones for altcoin ICOs in the past. We can work out the details, but at all times while you are alive no one else has access to your coins so you don't need to worry about me (or anyone else) moving them. Send me a PM and I'll tell you how I think it should work.

This works best if your coins are not moving or in some sort of cold storage. If you have them on an exchange or are actively trading them, or in some altcoins that are staking or running masternodes or anything else like that, that's going to be a little more difficult to manage, but not impossible.

You can write a will at a notary with detailed instructions on how to access an asset (and remember to attach private keys).
You can also write a special smart contract (digital will) using a special service, for example, https://mywish.io

I always tell me wife where most of my passwords and bitcoin keys are hidden. I just simply wrote these down on a physical piece of paper with no indication or marks of what usernames or email addresses were used and i just hide it in our house.

My wife knows me well enough to know my email accounts and usernames so i'm confident she'll easily be able to guess and match the passwords eventually, but i feel it's a special layer of security for us both.

I have an external hard disk! There is a folder with all the passwords, private keys, and everything connected with my wallets
and accounts. If anything happens anyone can open my external hard disk and find all necessary info about my crypto-currencies
and how to get to them. My wife knows about that, and my kids will when they grow enough to understand more about it.

It's a good action to have an external disk, where every information of your wallet including passwords and private keys are in there.
Knowing that there is someone to manage your crypto investment just in case anything happens to you.
I also have done the same thing, where the only person who can have my crypto is my family, they have a copy of my wallet info, so they can easily use it if they want to.

If your external hard drives or USB backups of your wallets are not encrypted or in encrypted files, or even just password protected files, anyone who gets physical access to them can steal your coins.

If you use Windows, you can use something like WinRAR to both compress your files and encrypt them with a password. You can also include parity error correction or redundancy.

file security in windows is good enough by providing a password when you want to access the files in it, the method is quite good and easy enough to do. and I think the security that you do can also be done on the flashdisk because by creating a password no one will be able to access it

For me the best way to secure what you have here in cryptocurrency incase you die in the future just tell to your family your private key like the most who you really trust in your family to continue what you do and tell him or her that once you die you can use what you have or maybe write all the information about your account and keep it safe to the vault and once you die for sure they will know it .

1. https://smartoptions.io/crypto-inheritance/
2. https://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/crypto-asset-inheritance-plans-how-to-protect-your-bitcoin-before-you-die/
3. https://www.amazon.com/Cryptoasset-Inheritance-Planning-Simple-Owners/dp/1947910116
Thanks for sharing these sites. I never knew some blockchain startups offer such help. I would read more about Safehaven as they seem legit to me. Hopefully, i can use their services in the near future because this is an important thing which needs to be looked at. i can imagine the number of bitcoins that has been lost forever :( I think y'all can check it out too

Make sure you tell the secret pass or your hardware wallet storage to your family that you trust.
Your parents or your son (if you already have) or anyone that you trust in your family.
Also write down a secret pass in a piece of paper then save it into your working desk is also good because it's easy to found

You can store your private keys/wallet files on a external hard disk or even on a SSD. I think this is the best choice and the safest method.

the first thing I did was make a will / decision involving a trusted third party, along with witnesses if my assets were large in number. after that I gave full access rights to the third party and entered into an agreement. well, when I leave the world, third parties have the right to take a few percent according to the promise that has been set.

I still confused the others Ideas, Because they have good knowledge in crypto platform. So they know how to protect the cryptocurrencies, May be If they died it will never useful for anyone and they share the details for any trusted person it will useful for anytime. Nowadays cryptocurrecy is the safe and secure because if they died bank asks number of procedure and format. But decentralised investment is both safe and easier to withdraw at anytime.

You can use services from https://mywish.io/, this platform allows users to transfer crypto assets automatically in certain periods / circumstances to the family or friend's in the event of his sudden illness or death. Or the second option, create a private key in the form of tatoo as said by CjMapope  ;D

Before that happens, you need to tell your family whatever you have in the world of Crypto, including the e-mail address and password that you use on each Exchange. Preparing yourself with that way I think is the last resort to save your Crypto assets.
It's not a great idea especially if you have a large family and a lot of money.

People get unexpected problems in their lives like debt or addictions and knowing you have a lot of money and your passwords they could try to steal from you. Your brother who you trust now could become an alcoholic in a few years and think only about another bottle. I don't trust people so I wouldn't share my passwords with my family only with 1 trusted person like a husband.

I would save my wallets credentials on my drive, and store it with password,
and tell the password to my family so they can access it in the future.

Introduction of them must be done. of course we do not want that our assets are not known by our families. very high risk so it's true our families should know what we have so they can also control about these assets.and if something happens like op says they also know what they are doing without the help of others

All of us in this temporary world will die, but first and foremost before that time comes for anyone of us, our loved ones should be entrusted with all you have. If you have illness which cannot be treated and you think you're a dying man, that would be secured giving the entire confidential information to your wife or any members of the family who can be trusted to manage your crypto savings.

Death is something that must be accepted by anyone in this world. Unlike other assets, crypto provides privacy and security for its users without anyone knowing. As users and holders of crypto, we certainly will not tell anyone our safe keys, but at least we only need to tell our wives and children if we have enough crypto assets. If the amount is small, forget it and maybe it doesn't meet their needs.
Giving them a password is the most sensible thing, but never say how much wealth you have stored there because it will kill you and enjoy your wealth. ;D ;D

That would be simple enough for other family members to get ahold of your crypto balances. While a paper with written instructions might be all you need to secure your crypto against death, it's still prone to wear and tear over time. Something solid and durable like a metal wallet (perhaps CryptoSteel?) might do the trick as it could withstand even the most harsh conditions in the environment. All of this could be easily stored in your own "safe box" or a "safe deposit box" from a bank. With clear and precise instructions on how to recover one's crypto balances, there should be nothing to worry about.

Interesting. I've never thought this would be largely possible with crypto transactions. The real deal would be on how to properly make use of the "nlocktime" feature to release funds by a certain date. For non-tech savvy users, this may seem like a headache. But it's a piece of cake for experienced crypto users. I wonder if this would also be possible in Ethereum via the use of smart contracts?

Anyways, I think that I'd go for a multi-sig account since it's much easier to set up. I'd just create keypairs for each of my family members so that only 2 out of 5 keys would unlock it. For added security, I could increase the number of keys required for accessing my crypto funds. But I'd like to make the process easy for even the non-tech savvy members of my family. As long as a plan is established to protect one's crypto funds against any undesired situation, you could rest assured that your hard-earned money will survive for a long time. ;)

I think one of the most effective way on how you can protect your crypto before death is through back up plans. If ever you have a significant other at the present, it would be best if you are going to lend them your wallet so that if ever something unfortunate happened, you know your investment wouldn't go to waste. Another way is through having a linked account of a certain family member who are involved in crypto so that if ever you die, they Mo KOcan put it in your heart and I will reck that person's  life.

I actually just made a post about this about 3 hours before you posted this question. You can check it out here. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5194060.msg52801549#msg52801549)

Basically, if you want to look into using a blockchain service, I recommend checking out Safe Haven. They are close to releasing the BETA version of their Safe Haven Inheritance Platform (SHIP) which may be out by the end of this year. Basically, their platform allows you to interact with legal entities and make your crypto inheritable to your beneficiaries.

DISCLAIMER: I'm invested in Safe Haven and it is mainly because they are the first to explore this issue and create a solution for it.

It's quite easy actually, you can add it in your will with the neccessary details stored in a safe location and that location would be added to your will, I know it's easier said than done but if you think it through and execute it well, your crypto wouldn't have to go to waste because it would work well in the end.

The most important thing is to teach your family members how to use crypto wallets. Or you can leave instructions on how to use them with all the keys. So I don't think it's a problem.

If your relatives understand what cryptocurrency is and why it is needed, then I do not think that they can have problems with obtaining funds, if suddenly something happens to you. And there are really quite a lot of ways to leave information about access to wallets.

That should not even be a matter of concern right now, the way that you will guard the document of your house from going to the hand of a wrong person who could claim it is the same way that you should guard your cryptocurrency investment.

My advice to you is that you should try and store your coins in a wallet that you can have a very strong password and private key to which I think you can have in a paper wallet, and document it with your bank in which they will be able to open a bank safe for you to store them, but then, you have to also ensure that the bank is not one that will wound up in the future too. You should also back it up too and have a copy of it in a flash where you can store in a hidden place that will be stated on one of your email with highly secured password that will be known by your wife or your children.

I think this is the easiest and best way, if you trust your wife, your family, if you live together take it off, then why don’t you train them, or at least your wife, how to access your account, your wallets, how to use them how to withdraw funds, and so on. If you do not want to transfer knowledge while everything is all right with you, you can teach this to your trusted friend, who will subsequently pass everything on to your loved ones. If you do not have such a friend, then write a will with instructions and give it to a notary public who in the future, in the event of your death, will transfer everything to your loved ones.

In terms of protecting crypto, actually there are lots of threats in making your job/business here, so you should not think about only when you die but also think of the present situation in which your money can be lost in just a simple mistake, because as of now a lot of scammers are taking advantage of people and they do not have the heart to really care about you because they only want your money. So I recommend that you should be aware of your every transaction so that your money is secured and there are no chances that your money will get. You should protect also the important data you are using like private keys in your wallet also the accounts you are using, you should have one folder in your device that stores all of that data, and you should put a password there. In a problem that when you die, you should have given the important data or create a folder that will tell your family that only open that folder when you die and use the money for themselves.

I think that very soon people will come up with some kind of smart contract that will allow them to transfer their assets by inheritance. for example, it will be possible to give part of the key to someone from relatives, but while you are alive they do not have access to assets

We all know that death is inevitable and everyone is bound to die sooner or later. For the protection of your crypto assets and to help your families financially after your death, you shall write down a paper including all essential data regarding your crypto currencies and wallets so that your beloveds can inherit it from you.

Thanks for the advise, mate. A paper wallet with an encrypted private key protected by a strong passphrase seems to be a quick and effective solution for protecting one's crypto funds against death. A simple set of instructions with how to access my utmost important crypto funds, will do the trick. Storing it in a bank is a great idea, but making a copy of the paper wallet in a data storage medium (like a flash drive) is nice too. Small flash drives like the SanDisk Cruzer Ultra-Fit are the size of a finger nail (almost), which is great for hiding it in a place no one else would imagine (except your beloved ones).

I've been looking into something called "Cryptosteel" which claims to be waterproof, shockproof, and even fireproof. This could be the ideal solution for protecting one's crypto funds even in the most drastic conditions ever imagined. It's a little expensive though, but worth every penny if it performs exactly as described. This would go great in a safe deposit box at a Bank, than a paper wallet itself. We all know that paper tends to deteriorate over time. Since the "Cryptosteel" is made out of metal, I'm sure that it'll last a lifetime!

All in all, I appreciate all of your input guys. Every suggestion/recommendation has been quite helpful in allowing me to protect my crypto assets against death. A well though-out plan will ensure that my hard-earned money made via crypto will not be lost even after death. So far, I've determined to use multi-sig wallets and the "Cryptosteel" to fulfil said purpose. Hopefully, it'll go into the right hands after my demise. :D
