Title: Blockchain.info down?
Post by: snarlpill on March 18, 2014, 02:41:46 AM
Hey everybody, I'm fairly new to BTC though I've been following it for a while. Earlier I was going to check the balance of my main wallet, and noticed blockchain.info was down for maintenance. That was a couple hours ago and it still is, but I was just wondering if that is a common occurrence, and if so how long on average it is. I guess this would be a good time to get the fractions of a coin I have backed up on a paper wallet?

Well in the meantime you could try the other websites that offer similar functionality.

blockr.io and blockexplorer.com to name a few.

I believe you can import your aes.wallet.json file into Armory.

rule 1. dont rely on a single third party, be decentralized. use them all...

Or learn how to store coins securely yourself, without having to rely on a third party site that can experience downtime

To answer another of your questions: No, blockchain.info is rarely down for maintenance. Today's outage is definitely a fluke.

Full disclosure: I am working for Blockchain ;)

But I have been using the service for the past few years, before I was part of the team. The site was almost never down.

What does that accomplish? Blockchain is the easiest and most complete. Unless there starts being some kind of "funny business" at blockchain.info, why use anything else?

hopefully blockchain.info will be up soon...have the elaborated on the problem, or just said that it is a database bug?

Thanks for the information guys.

That is good advice. I have 3 different wallets in theory, though 2 of them are just different sites I used to deposit USD and buy BTC, and the main one I use for my assets is Blockchain.

That's more or less how I felt about the situation. To my fairly n00b self, blockchain.info has always seemed legit, and seems to be an integral part of the BTC community. Plus it is a one-stop shop for me where I can check blocks for transactions, see charts, etc.

No it does not at the moment but we are planning to add it soon.

Mtgox was once and Integral part of the BTC community.  Think about that and be afraid.

Major scam after major scam has come from Integral parts of the BTC community.

The theoretical implementation of Blockchain means that they are unable to actually access your private keys and steal your funds. If you are ever worried you can still import into Multibit anyways.

Mt Gox was big because it was one of the earliest players and a lack of competition didn't help that issue at all. Once we see more and more competition for services willing to exchange, accept, pay in BTC we will see less and less major scams as each business (to call it that) would take progressively less market share. As well as that having a slice of the market would one day be a lot more profitable than trying to scam users, plus you wouldn't have to worry about being hunted down.

No confirmation on my trans as of yet!

I am having the same issue. I included a decent fee and it has been something like 5 hours now without any confirmations.

blockchain.info's database is still not up to date.  It looks like all transactions made after right before the site went down have this problem at the present time.  On the actual block chain, it's probably been confirmed, look it up on blockexplorer.com

I checked blockexplorer and it says the transaction does not exist.

Good thing I saw this thread, I thought I was the only one with a transaction that got stuck! Keep me updated, I want to know if I should keep on waiting or send funds again.

So will incoming new transactions also be delayed even if confirmed?
I would imagine "yes", hope they get caught up soon.

Blockchain.info needs to be burned to the ground.

I use the one that used to be in the apple itunes store.  If you have a jailbroken iphone, you can get the full version of the blockchain.info app from cydia...
