Hi All

Had a new laptop, win 10, as i could not use Ledger Live on my ancient Win7 laptop.

Just needed to do a transaction so downloaded latest Electrum, use hardware device/ledger.

It loads, accepts my ledger numbers BUT i have zero balance!!!!

What is going on here #, i;m seriously stressed!!!

It did not load any data as norm when i usually use Electrum, it connects, counts up/ shows transactions etc.

What do i do??? Where do i go, this laptop has better protection thamks my old 10 year old one!!

First relax! There are no need to panic.
Can you check the addresses in your Electrum and see if one of your address from previous ledger is there?

Assuming you know at least a BTC address of your ledger and also assuming you know how to search for address in Electrum. Let me know. Let's go one step after another.

What are the 'Ledger numbers' here? Select 'View -> Show Addresses' and access the 'Addresses' tab. Do the addresses start with a different letter/number or are they exactly the same? You might have selected a wrong derivation path while pairing your wallet with Electrum.

I am pretty sure this is the case hence I asked to check the address he used to have previously. I think OP is panicking too much and I do not blame him to have this kind of feeling especially if the amount is large.

I really hope this is the case that we both are suspecting. OP just derived a wrong path hopefully.

I am using the same Ledger. Just a new Win 10 laptop, which i only piurchased in orfer to install Ledger Live.
But i needed a quick transaction so just used Electrum/Ledger.

There is no previous ledger, only a new Win10 with more security than my 9 year old Acer which is was honestly quicker than this!!

I'm stressed!!!

@BitCryptex This makes the common sense atm, i did have 3 options, i just selected the one presented. How would i know the correct path mate

I still have my old laptop BUT it has no screen and only runs in safe mode, so no doubt it has an electrum folder.

I'm not sure how to make tjem visavle in Win10

What should i of selected?

I only know one of my addresses as they are dynamic

What do i do??

Do you have the correct passphrase of the ledger you have? I hope you do and this means you have nothing to worry. You are just doing or missing something and that is it.

When I said old ledger I actually meant old use of the same ledger. Sorry that I was not clear.

We are going there and for this we need to know which address format you have the BTC in.

Don't panic. Your coins seems to be safe. What did you addresses look like before. Did they start with 1, 3 or bc1? It's important because each type of address represents a different option while pairing the wallet.

Edit: Royse was a bit faster. You can check the remaining two derivation paths. Your private keys won't be exposed in the process. Since you didn't use Ledger Live, you don't have to worry about modyfing the paths. Check the remaining two.

Yes i do, i have one i usd to use all the time but, i had it as static, but i had to change it to dynamic/change, there was a massive thread on Reddit regarding it.

There are no need to panic again. You see me and BitCryptex both are going to the same direction and we know for sure that this is your problem here.

If you have address with 1 but if you go with segwit then you will not see your balance.

While creating a new wallet, select 'Use a hardware device' again. Read everything carefully and don't skip anything. You should be asked at some point to select the correct derivation path. Select the second option and see if it worked. If not, try the third one.

I recall now , i was trying to send BTC and it Ledger gave me a warning regarding a new path, i went on Reddit, it was the only one similar to the one i selected to start electrum.

I have posted it on here. i had an error about a new path!! Do i want to proceed...?

i'm with the latest after the split, it seems like year ago when you had to pick segwit or Legacy......Jeez i can't remember but i'm presuming Seggwt as Legacy was older/slower

This was always my fixed address before i could not send and had the EXACT message on what to choose when selecting 1 of 3 when logging in.

The post is om here reddit and here stated it was safe, it was because i did not allow change off adress or similar, i disabled it months ago and all was ok?

Will do i tried the third one one as it matched from memory about the cahge of path with Ledger.

I know you had to make it shown in Win7, not sure in win10, appadata/roaming ...etc from memory mate

As far as I remember, the warning you are talking about is related to the change address. I actually found this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5183441.0) written by you. Your derivation path back then was 'm/49'/0'/0'/0/' so you should select p2sh-segwit while creating a new wallet. Take a look at the image below.

Nope! Open Electrum and select 'File -> New/Restore' in the top-left corner or press CTRL+N. Select 'Standard wallet', 'Use a hardware device', connect your hardware wallet and select the derivation path just like on the image above. Don't add any numbers!

I have uninstalled Electrum, it has 3 versions -

I tried two, first was was .exe, second was 'windoe installer.

Can I suggest you to use Ledger live?

This will be an easier solution for you hopefully.

Keep it simple and just follow the step by step information they have provided in their website. You can do it using Electrum later. Your coins are really safe, please do not stress out.

I was going to suggest exactly that.
Electrum is amazing for more advanced users. Newbies can stick with ledger live, and when he finds his coins he may try Electrum again.

It doesn't matter. Download 'Windows installer'. We didn't ask you to do anything on their website. Once you install it, follow the instruction from this post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5202540.msg53114532#msg53114532).


Close that window and create a new wallet (CTRL+N). You will see the dialog box we posted if you create a new wallet using your hardware wallet.

When you uninstall... it DOES NOT remove the Electrum data directory... so all your previously wallets will still exist.

So, what is happening, is that when you are starting Electrum, it is trying to open your old wallet... that has the wrong derivation path and wrong addresses in it! ;)

Just relax, take a moment... and in Electrum select: "File -> New/Restore -> 'enter new wallet name' -> Standard Wallet -> Use a hardware device -> It should find your ledger, if not, connect it, unlock it and open the "bitcoin" app on the device and click next"... it'll then prompt you for the address type:

Select the 2nd option here... "p2sh-segwit (p2wpkh-p2sh)"... select whether or not you want to encrypt the wallet file... and then your wallet will be created and you should be able to see all your addresses/transaction history/balance.

I had to delete the appadata/Electrum folder.

I selected as above and all was good, it stopped halfway whilst loading transaction on the date where Ledger informed me and a lot of others that we had to set a route.

So i;m still WAY down boys.

You mentioned earlier something about moving from "static" to "dynamic/change"? ???

It seems it is still syncing... something like 736 various transactions... that could take a while. Has it been stuck at 730/736 for a while? ???


As much as I prefer Electrum, in all honesty, I suspect that all of this would have been "faster" and a lot less hassle if you had simply downloaded and installed "Ledger Live" :P

Ahhhh ok... my bad... it seems that the numbers shown when "synchronizing..." is actually the "addresses" that are being synced.

You have 736 addresses that need to be synced! :o :o :o

Depending on how these addresses were used, you might have a LOT of transactions that need to be synced up. Sometimes Electrum struggles with very large numbers of addresses/transactions. If you click on the "Addresses" tab (Menu: "View -> Show Addresses")... how many addresses is it showing at the moment? ???

I have just managed to log in on my ancient 10 year old laptop, idid have to use a screen output and a usb mose BUT it booted faster than this piece of shit.

Opened Electrum (which i was informed on here was dangerous etc) hence me getting an 8250U laptop which is SLOWER!!!

All transactions show as should be, it HAS to something to do with the 'derived path', which i set on the Ledger, it was fixed etc.

ALL i wanted is to use LL which is not compatible with Win7, thus i got this thing after stating it was the best bang for buck.

Its just rebooted now, to afraid to do a anything else BUT the problem when loading/stuck is from the change of derived path posted above, i tried it on here , my 'New and Better' laptop, put the correct path in and had some weird messages.....

I honestly feel like throwing this 8250U in the bin and use my old faithfull Centrino, it's honestly faster!!!

I only purchased tge bloody thing for LL, ......yes its been wiped, frsh install on win10.

Unfortunately, that link doesn't appear to be correct... so it isn't much help.

I'm wondering if the change in derivation path was simply a move from legacy to segwit? Or if you're confusing the changes made with the ETH derivation paths (which would have no bearing on your BTC accounts)

It's also possible, if you created multiple "accounts" on your Ledger that you're not seeing everything in Electrum. Electrum only supports ONE Ledger "Account" per wallet... if you had extra accounts you have to create a wallet per account and need to modify the derivation path slightly during wallet creation to see the extra accounts.


At present... what can you actually see in Electrum? Is it showing ANY transaction history at all? In your previous screenshot (https://imgur.com/a/mPBQuav), it was only showing a blank history. Has Electrum finished syncing? (Green dot in bottom right corner):

Have you able to access your coins yet?

Are you using a temporary Bip39 passphrase on your ledger?  If so, you'll have to enter the passphrase on your ledger before you connect it to an Electrum wallet.  Also, do you remember if you had multiple accounts on your ledger?

One passsphrase, one account.

New laptop as coul dnot use LL, it;s an 8250u but it i actually slower than my £50 old one.  ::)

Also, as mentioned... your previous link regarding the post about Ledger requiring you to change something is broken... all it does it link back to a BitcoinTalk "reply" page. So, a working link would be helpful too! ;)

49'/0'/0'/0/6 just means that Electrum had selected the seventh address in your wallet as the change address instead of the default change derivation path because "use change address" was disabled.
It absolutely has nothing to do with the "lagging" sync.

Try this:
Do not use the same USB port.
Your new laptop must have faulty ports since it worked in your old laptop and both LL and Electrum didn't in the new one.
If still didn't worked, update the MoBo's driver.

I saw that you have tried to select the default derivation path for p2sh-segwit which is the correct one,
so just open that wallet again after switching USB ports.

I also just tried LL again, created a password, then your just on the LL manager which only gives options to uninstall apps?

So i thought BIN BTC, would not allow me to do it as other apps require it?

Then went to BIN BCH, same message

Tried again and it has uninstalled ALL my apps?

Added BTC back got it syncing again after about 30 mins it returned mt to the LL log in screen?

I logged in thinking all is good i'm back to install yet again??

Obviously, something on the W10 interferes with the normal operation of Electrum and Ledger Live. Maybe you have some problem with USB ports (try with nc50lc advice), or it is something on a software-level incompatibility.

What firmware version do you have on Nano S? Try to update to 1.6 via Ledger Live (download the latest version), but before check is there some security software on W10 that is preventing Ledger Live to work properly.

If you click on "Manager" in Ledger Live (connect and unlock device and follow instructions in LL)... what firmware is showing?

is it 1.3.1? 1.4.2? 1.5.5? or 1.6.0?

If it is NOT 1.6.0, I suggest you make sure you have your 24 word seed mnemonic backup handy and that you update to 1.6.0
