What type of cool stuff could i put on a website to make it appeal to the general public?

You could start a website listing ponzis, and get everyone here help with the SEO.  Ponzis are the easiest scam to pull, which is why they are common with idiots.

Just don't start to rank them - a ponzi is a ponzi - or else you'll eventually receive payment for a scam you rated positive, and your reputation is gone. 

If you want to attract general crowd and not focusing on a specific niche you have to create general content.
This is not the best idea when you have a website though. It would be difficult to get up ranking from google i think.
I would just focus on a specific crowd and post content of my interest.

Besides the staples (wealth, health) everyone is attracted to different things.  For example, I value accountability, so I would build something on a blockchain that would help everyday people deal with parcel thefts from homes, which will only increase as drones do.

For me, simple is appealing. The words in the website is easy to understand and pleasing to my eyes. The color of the back ground and text is the most important in the website. You must not consider any sticker or picture as design that pleases the viewer.

The color and configuration of the website should be beautifully and professionally arranged.

Make it interactive by regularly adding interesting surveys/polls, a forum, chat room, etc
