MetaMask has now been installed by over 1,000,000 users on Google Chrome according to the latest stats. It’s a major milestone for Ethereum and the MetaMask team.

Users on MetaMask continue to grow as the Ethereum wallet plugin becomes one of the hottest cryptocurrency extensions. The extension is used widely for managing Ethereum, Ethereum-based tokens, and decentralized apps (dApps) straight from one’s Google Chrome browser.

At the time of writing, MetaMask on the Chrome Web Store now boasts 1,033,484 users. The event went unnoticed by many in the Ethereum community amid the ample work being done behind-the-scenes on other matters, but the milestone is worth celebrating. The news has been quickly spreading on Twitter.

Surely a milestone, but probably doesn't really mean much. This number can be botted easily and moreover, it doesn't indicate active usage or extent of usage. It could very well be users that got the extension but never used it in the first place.

And how many of them active?

It's a big number, but i wonder how many of them are active, that's the important number really. Good article though.

It doesn't matter at all since OP just shared installed. But if we talk about the technical and adoption side of it, it really matters.

I already tried to use MetaMask since I got my first Ethereum, what it really good it's browser extension, most of the time on my computer I am using the browser, so it's useful, 1 click away if I have any transaction or to do something.
It will still grow for sure, especially now Ethereum still on uptrend and Bitcoin dominance is falling, means altcoins are on the move especially Ethereum as the highest market cap among the altcoins.

And I'm one of those guys, I have it in my browser but seldom use it I only get to use when I am trading in DEX which is only once every two months, metamask and Ethereum developers should take this big opportunity to create more Dapps for metamask users, the number is something not achievable by the other application or extension users.

Yeah, it could even be compared to bitcoin wallets ever growing numbers.

How many are actively using them? How about many users using multiple wallets?

Anyone can just download and tested it, and then quickly abandoned it. Good numbers but not a good indication on how many are really using it at this time. Sadly though, maybe we can't get that accurate numbers.

In Ethereum blockchain by introducing a MetaMask platform is very easy and understanding after going through the instruction, therefore, MetaMask  is faster for any transaction given. secondly MetaMask is really build for advance usage with a wide range usage across the glob.

Wow I'm surprised, even after many hack rumours going on around the internet about metamask, congrats to metamask team, I hope they will keep implementing better features that will make metamask unhackable

I am a metamask user and I think this is a good application and easy to use for everyone. With the increasing number of Chrome users, I think users who understand cryptocurrency install this application so that it is widely used by ethereum tokens holders

This is good news and props to the development team for a great product that can help you secure your private keys better which protects your funds and makes using services like DEX's easier to use and trade with

If there's a reliable and extension that I would trust, MetaMask is one of the few.

There's a lot of these extension browsers that I'm not using anymore and avoid downloading such because of being aware from the incidents that hacked wallets of the users.

It's a milestone for MetaMask and I guess to the crypto community as well because we're growing and keep multiplying which means adoption.

I'm using metamask very useful and easy to use. This indication could be because more and more people are aware about security, using metamask is one of the recommended ways to access Ethereum balance compared to copy paste our PK.

It's all just a rumor, and sometimes the best projects are inevitable for hackers. Like Binance, they were hacked in 2019, but their exchange is still growing and there are more users. And metamask is like this, this is one of the best apps to help keep users safe in this market.

1 million users only? Others are using myetherwallet?
I would recommend to use metamask instead of myetherwallet if you dont own hardware wallet because for me it seems more safe, the private key is stored and encrypted in the app, you dont have to copy it each time you login the wallet, secondly you will need metamask if you use some Etherem Dapps.  :)

I've installed and use metamask on my google chrome extesion and I can say that it is easier to use and access, altthough I only use it everytime I check my wallet and everytime I trade tokens. I have three wallets there that I can check all the time without putting private key everytime in order to access the wallet unlike any other software and websites out there.

Both of them use Metamask and Myetherwallet, but everyone has different opinions and what they want is what is done, the most important thing is that we secure the Private Key safely, I think it will not be a problem.
But what is simpler and does not need to copy paste is their metamask enough to rely on through the browser extension you can make transactions quickly and I often use metamask compared to Myetherwallet, but both of them still work well.

I don't see real difference between any other online/hot wallet or metamask in terms of security (they all lack of it). But metamask is much more comfortable to use actually.
Anyway you should have one hardware wallet or paper wallet to safe big funds

That's outstanding number actually and of course it's a big achievement for both of Ethereum and the MetaMask team. Now question is how many users are active or using there wallet properly. May be people just use it when they need to trade their asset with DEX exchange. In my opinion they need to bring more develop on that plugin and make that platform more easy to use for world wide users.

It's a massive number, but i would like to see how many of those wallets are active as that is the important number.

This is great for mass adoption, it's a very impressive number for any project, nevermind a crypto one.

A good achievement. They've got a million users, which is a very good thing. People who are now moving towards better security to keep their funds safe. Metamask is easy to use for browser extension. There are many people here who still use myetherwallet, they don't really know what and how to use metamask.

We could say that Ethereum has 1 million active users, probably more, not everyone is using metamask. But still it is not a number what we would like to see because there are approximately 40 million crypto users, so that would mean that every 40th crypto user is using Ethereum, or atleast the most safe app for Ethereum access.

It's been a while I had used Ethereum and other ERC-20 token transfers. But metamask had always been a perfect entry to teach newbies about how these transactions and gas works in real time. MEW is a little complicated for newbies since they might enter a phishing site and lose their private keys. But Metamask is a safer extension and makes the transfer between the addresses easier.

Apart from this, their integration with hardware wallets like Trezor adds an advantage to secure our Ethereum and tokens. Dapps are growing at an enormous rate, but the tokens which are being created out of thin air and likely of no usage in real world creates the problems of scams. Hopefully, Ethereum blockchain finds it's way through the masses and decentralized applications overcome the today's centralized applications.

That doesn't deny the fact that metamsk is first choice by ethereum community and various dapp devs, even mobile browsers support metamask these days and mobile users are far more greater than counterparts.

Really love this wallet/plugin. Useful, minimalistic and nice looking. Good old metamask, virtual version of Ledger/Trezor etc hardware wallets. Easy and free, with enough security level.

That comes only from a single wallet and imagine what will be happening with it comes to the so many wallet and we will take all of the calculation into the one and I guess million adoption has already happened. But the problem is if this is not having a very good accuracy and you must know that we can't sure if all of those wallets are active wallet but I'm glad to see that happens right now.

This number sealed their position as one of the top coin in the market and with this number we have a proof that Cryptocurrency has come along way this is is a huge number for one coin alone and with more people adopting Cryptocurrency we will see the number tripling in the next three years.

Metamask is a very secure wallet specially for receiving a token from airdrop and other giveaways. It also shows that crypto is getting popular and influential day by day and peoples are using it. It's just a single wallet just think other wallets like trust,coinomi or coinbase like wallet also has a million users. I think metamask is good for those who are new in crypto and need an easy but secure wallet.

Of course this is a great extension and have been using it for a long time.  Faced with some problems and turned to support.  They quickly answered me and explained everything intelligibly.

MetaMask is must have application when you use Dapps, because you need to interact with smart-contracts and this is the most easiest way how to stay safe, not putting your private key away.
But for normal transactions I do not recommend it, personally I have bad experience with many reverted transactions due to low gas - it doesn´t calculate it correctly.

MataMast is one of the widely used extensions in the history of Apps. Reaching such a milestone is an achievement, but I do not think the team is seeing that as being a big deal. If they truly are, then I think three would have been more to it. Also, a lot of users I believe are not active, but that notwithstanding, they are widely used among Etereum lovers.

The security sense of MetaMast is another uniqueness I see about it and there has never been any issue about it.

Talking about the "security sense" as you mentioned, the major reason why I've been using metamask over time is principally because of this. Connecting to decentralized exchanges without actually using your private keys or keystore directly gives metamask users an edge. However, there are fake metamask extensions and a newbie might not be able to differentiate the fakes from the real one. A friend of mine lost 2 ETH after installing and using a fake metamask app on playstore, it was a sad omen but a lesson. I encourage crypto enthusiasts to use metamask especially for some third party transactions which require access to personal wallets or signing in to DEX. Crossing 1M user milestone sounds interesting, but like you wrote, not all users are active.

The fake Metamask browser extensions should be banned from the web and Android play markets. This milestone is big congrats for both MyEtherwallet and Metamask team, by the way, the Mycrypto app is the part of the same team, IIRC.

Ethereum fans usually prefer to use the web version of Myetherwallet but the popularity of Metamask or similar storage apps increase day by day. The real use case numbers show the interest of both crypto users and investors.

Ok, so it makes sense that hackers are now targeting MetaMask because it is one of the most popular crypto wallet and gateway apps. And recently there was a wave of attacks, posing as a legit apps in webstore and I think newbies are falling for the trap, Fake Electrum, MEW and Meta Mask (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5238499.0).

@StephenJH - those fake extension has been deleted by Google, but I'm sure more are going to pop up so everyone be careful and report it right away if you cross path with those malicious apps.

Metamask is a good browser extension that we can use for ethereum wallet, no wonder many peoples using it.
I am currently using it as well, and there is no problem so far.
but still, we must very careful when using our wallet because scammers and hackers still trying to steal our coin.

MetaMask is a Secure Web Extension. I think MetaMask users are increasing because of Strong Security. But its matter of  wonder how many of them are still active, that's the important fact really . Good article Thanks .

It should remain secured it's probably the best tool and the best platform of the Ethereum network, because of the number of users it secured Ethereum place in the market, I also wonder how many of them are active using Metamask, I only use it to trade on Dex.

A reflection of the fact that people continue building new Dapps and that MetaMask offers a very easy way to interact with them. Forget ICO's, the way to make money with cryptocurrency is in Dapps. 2020 is proving to be a very good year for the Ethereum ecosystem.

It's a good milestone considering the fact that alot of people are scared of browser extension and also it's kind of technical. But I doubt if those users are active.

It is already easy and even newbies can install it and learn how to used the apps.

I think the devs have simplified the platform already the problem is that newbies doesn't check everything before installing it and probably getting a fake apps on their machine. Yes, I would say that it is really impressive the way it grow in the last couple of years.

There will be competition no doubt and make or improving apps that will make us crypto enthusiast more comfortable, but still we need to be careful when downloading apps, just saying.

However, if the browser extension is of an official origin, there is nothing to be afraid of, because as long as I use metamask on my browser, there aren't any obstacles that I experience, so don't be afraid of the metamask browser extension.

Of course, no one will say how much a person actually uses the MetaMask extension directly, but the figure is still good. It’s very convenient for me to work with it on a PC. A fairly reliable and secure browser extension.

It doesn't matter how many of the users are active, or it doesn't even matter if some of them are double, even I have three metamask accounts because on early days I opened one to get some token and I took that money and withdraw and cashed it out to bitcoin and didn't looked back, deleted metamask and just moved on.

After a while I realized cryptokitties could be a decent investment and started another account and did some cryptokitties thing, felt like it wasn't really worth it and stopped and deleted again. Now I have another one that is last and not really doing anything with it but keeping it. The deal here is that they reached 1 million users while others didn't, others could had non-active users or double triple account users but they couldn't reach 1 million while metamask did reached it.

I totally agree with you. I have dozens of metamask accounts but I can't even remember the password for the main account I'm using. So these numbers don't say anything, but the metamask is worth using, it's convenient and safe to store as well as receive and send money.

Amazing! I didn't knew so many people used Metamask. I thought something in the range of 10K-20K. But I guess with the rise in Defi Dapps on Ethereum, it could be that more and more people are using Metamask. Also it being basically the only web3 wallet for Ethereum on desktops, helps it grow in numbers.

That's impressive! I have no doubt that this figure can double by the end of next year because metamask has really proven itself to be a great tool for crypto enthusiasts.
