Don't take sleeping pills, if I were you. Don't just think about your problems. Because that is the primary factor that affects your sleep. Another one is your healthy lifestyle, you should maintain regular exercise, eat healthy foods and stay away from people that gives you negativity.

If you want to sleep, practice it on a regular basis. Oh, don't just do it for a month. Make it always.

You should need to counsel with a psychiatrist as soon as possible.

Drink alcohol. Beer is better because it contains hops, avoid sweet vine or other sugar containing drinks.

First things first, consult a doctor, they'll give you a better solution but if I were you, I wouldn't take any sleeping pills.

Calm your mind and relax so that you can sleep easily. Avoid contacts with your phone or laptops while you are in bed, that distracts you from sleeping and keeps your mind hyper to do more of it than sleeping.

how old are you/if you are at your 40's or so then this is normal that we cannot get sleep that fast unless we are very tired for the whole day and our body and mind is looking for a good sleep.

But if you are younger?then better prevent drinking caffeine and Soda, try not to smoke and alcoho also because alcohol immunity gives sleep hard to find.

Exercise daily and lessen your thinking as problem can be solve one at a time.

Actually depends on the alcohol level. There are studies that mention drinking a small/ moderator amount of alcohol at night such as red wine helps with sleep.

But I doubt OP is willing to spend on wines, since they can be pretty expensive :D

Nutrition (vegetables, greens, fruits)
No bad habits (smoking, alcohol, etc.)
More physical activity (it really helps! When you did some physical activity all day, then in the evening you don’t even have any questions, because you really want to sleep)
And no stress (if something bothers you, then decide it, and if you can’t decide, then there’s no reason to worry. And more positive, good kind films, talking with family, friends, laughter, positive emotions!)

Try to relax your body and your mind first, use a loose shirt. Usually, before I go to sleep, I take a bath first and make myself relax, then I will go to my bed to sleep. It works well for me, but I don't know with you. Don't forget to pray before you sleep, and ask GOD to be with you.

Just start exercising everyday for at least one hour.
If you do so your body will start getting tired.
You are going to get sleeps much easier as your body is going to need it in order to recover.

There is a good way to get rid of insomnia. Do not sleep this night, and then the next night you will fall asleep right away (because you will want to sleep even during the day)

Yups you are correct because even some doctors are advising patients to at least take some small volume of alcohol.

Maybe i have just exaggerated the word,i mean don't take too much as i have mentioned "Alcohol Immunity" means the more we take.

Drinking alcohol is not going to help you to sleep. At first I might see positive result but in the long run it will cause harm to your health. Stay away from alcohol. You better understand sleeping habit and counseling with specialist. Avoid drinking coffee as well after evening. Don't work on computer late at night.

Avoid taking caffeine content foods especially coffee, avoid getting stressed, don't take heavy foods for dinner, drink plenty of water, avoid smoking and more importantly avoid being lonely. :)

The best curious is to physical exercise. I am someone who is addicted to sleeping pills and I had really hard time to leave that. And the best cure and the method that work for me is to exercise thoroughly for hours. You might go to a psychiatrist and she will just give you more medicines and you will get hooked and become a regular client for her. But if you exercise and work your body up then within a day or two you will see the results.

You are going to destroy your liver and your lungs in order to get a good sleep?
Exercising is the best way to get tired and have a good sleep.
All other ways are just unhealthy tricks that would make harm and not good.

Try to eat healthy, have an exercise and limit your nap so it wont be hard to sleep at night.

Avoid or lessen your caffeine and alcohol intake.

If these dont work then better to consult your doctor.

Tobacco is smoked way heavier and people still lives long, you can even prepare to eat or drink the weed, and i wasn't supporting alcohol and against pills.

Make your bedroom comfortable for sleeping (dark, quite and not too warm or not too cold).
Do not continue to try to sleep, rather, perform a relaxing activity like reading a book or listening to music until you got tired. It is also important to avoid caffeine, alcohol or nicotine/smoking late in the day since they are stimulants that can make you stay awake. Try not to take day naps, it will make you less sleepy at night.

But if you experience frequent insomnia, it is better to see your doctor for proper diagnosis and management.

Rather than taking the conventional sleeping pills, my doctor had prescribed me to take Melatonin instead to help me sleep better. Either way, please consult your doctor first and ask if Melatonin would be effective for you to take.

Medicine can make you addicting in the future because your mind will think that you can not sleep without consuming that medicine. You should try to relax before you sleep, take a bath with warm water, use clean clothes, don't think anything while you close your eyes, and only pray before you sleep. Meditating will help you release all of the things in your mind because you will try not to think so many things that happen with you.

The good way to get rid of insomnia is to get some prescription sleeping pills.

That's the worst way.
It will solve your problem temporary and on top of that you might get addicted to those pills.
Just start exercising or do not use your mobile phone - laptop before you go to sleep. There are physical ways to solve it and not getting pills.

Exactly my doctor's point, that's why she didn't prescribe those addicting conventional sleeping pills. Also, melatonin is a dietary supplement, not really a medicine, that's why it was suggested and prescribed for me to take as an alternative option instead since I am also hypertensive.

Again, please try to research about it if you'd like to know more and/or better yet consult your doctor about melatonin (so you could get a professional doctor's opinion about this), before generally concluding about the matter. I only mentioned it, just to share my experience and for others to have an idea at least (but to also check with their doctor's first before taking it), that's all.

I will support you on this one. Melatonin is best thing there is to get you back to some normal sleeping pattern as fast as possible. This does not mean you should ignore all other healthy lifestyle choices to support your health and sleep.

I use Melatonin also, when I get out of my sleeping routine I use Melatonin for a week max and then I'm back in my pattern and don't need it anymore. One box of Melatonin is like 10$ and can last you more then a half year for sure.

Melatonin can be used for people who want to normal sleeping, but better consulting with the doctor, so you don't have any problem in the future. But if it is necessary, it is still better not to consume anything because we have an alarm that will sound when our body feels tired, and if that happens, we can rest for a while. So you don't have to spend money to buy any pills to help you sleep well.

Reading usually does it for me.
Reading does when you are not in serious case,Because there are people that cannot sleep just because they are thinking over and not because they are insomniac .

But case are different if you are in this sickness, because  your body and mind usually not collaborate when you want to sleep.

So better make your self tired the whole day so at night your body will find Bed to lay and your mind to rest.

Some people's alarm is off, that is why people need help sometimes to schedule their sleep so they can function in society. Society works by following norms and norm is that people sleep at night. Some people don't sleep at night naturally, their alarm tells them it is time to sleep in the morning for example, because of that those people need help with sleeping the way society dictates so they can hold a day job for example.

So this kind of nonsensical folk wisdom does not work all the time and if you red the posts in this topic you would understand that without me having to explain this.

Yes I also recommend physical activity and a cold shower after that this is to relax the muscles, drinking a glass of milk can help you to relax because it has melatonin that can help you to fully relax and feel sleepy, if this persist, it could be something and it's recommended for a medical check up, sleeplessness is a symptoms of other maladies.

  • Try not to do anything really active in the evening.
  • No phone/TV/computer before going to bed.
  • Read a book or do yoga (Moon Salutation).
  • Make sure there's enough fresh air in your bedroom.
  • Drink camomile/lavender/valerian tea.

It really helped me to deal with insomnia for years, I hope it helps you! :D ;)

You can use these two techniques:
Stimulus control therapy. This method helps remove factors that condition your mind to resist sleep.
Relaxation techniques. Progressive muscle relaxation, biofeedback and breathing exercises are ways to reduce anxiety at bedtime.
