Well, if there is no profit, nobody will mine other than the ones that have thousands of eths and need to secure the network or perhaps doing that will instant make eth price around 1k and then will still be profitable. I guess they think the latter will happen, price increases 75% and rewards are 75% reduced. Any further reduction in rewards would kick off all gpu miners leaving the network in the hands of large asic farms and susceptible to 51% attacks. Therefore, this EIP will never be adopted as there is no support for it unless you are invested self interest with asics.

No matter what the price is I doubt anyone would use the network if that network is prone to attacks because these attacks will eventually reduce the price.
