Title: [INFO] The Canary Thread
Post by: teeGUMES on November 16, 2020, 03:16:10 PM
The Introduction:
As collectors of all things bitcoin/cryptocurrency related we put the faith and hope of incredible sums of value in that of a coin creator's hands. The handling of the creation of public/private keypairs and hopefully the destruction thereafter, along with the quality of paper and ink used to create the QR code/Private Key underneath the tamper proof holograms should be something we talk about and even monitor. The chemical composition of the coin/card itself.. will it react adversely after a certain amount of time and shorten the life span of the ink? How long exactly does ink last? I've started to ask people around me and I've never gotten a firm answer.. usually it's the same answer of "I don't know". What if in ten to twenty years we start peeling our Casascius/BTCC Mint/Crypto Imperator coins and we find that underneath the hologram is an illegible blob of ink due to bleeding or fading.
If every coin remained unpeeled we would never know.

Recently I began collecting coins and cards that I, along with others have peeled to serve as a resource for the community aswell as to act as an early warning sign.. the canary singing in the coal mine.. (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/canary_in_a_coal_mine) to help aide with the risk of the many with great sums lying in wait underneath a hologram. With the recent NFT(non fungible token) boom we have seen blockchain/cryptocurrency enter more of a mainstream approach with this recent Christie's auction (https://async.art/featured/block-21-at-christies). It won't be too long until we see some of the coins we trade here in Collectibles being introduced to various auction houses around the world. The question will always remain.. "Are the bitcoin still underneath the hologram?". With this thread we eliminate that question aswell as provide an accurate experiment that will run until the day I exit bitcoin for good (read: never).

In this thread you will find some of the more popular coins, rare coins, not so rare coins, and cards/notes made by many different creators. Some of these coins hold billions of satoshis and some only a few thousand. Remember, one bitcoin is equal to one hundred million satoshis.
With the ever changing fiat value of these coins and the length that I plan to run this thread I won't even begin to talk about the dollar value of one bitcoin or even one satoshi.

The Goal:
To monitor the paper and ink used underneath the various tamper proof holograms, scratch off portions, or any other form used to conceal the private key or mnemonic seed. Any sort of degradation will be noted either by the naked eye or underneath a digital microscope. High resolution pictures will be provided with each coin listed. The thread will be updated with new pictures/videos(maybe when I learn this microscope) biannually. See something I don't? Let me know in a PM and we can look further.

The Controls:
The peel date will be considered the date in which the bitcoin(or other crypto) has been swept from the coin. For unfunded coins I have sent a minute amount of bitcoin to the public address and swept it to show the peel date. These will range in years from 2011 up to 2020 and beyond. The earlier peel dates give us a much greater indication of the quality of the ink underneath the hologram and its ability to withstand being exposed to the air/atmosphere.

As mentioned above, your coin that remains unpeeled will have fared better than a coin that has been exposed to the atmosphere, humidity, heat, cold, and human touch. This is only an early warning sign and if any fading/deterioration happens to the set of coins in this thread I will reach out to other collectors privately to either check their peeled coins or possibly do the deed and peel one of their own. An alarm will never be raised until it is verified by a second and third set of eyes.

Coins will be stored in various airtites and placed inside the collectors box to keep them out of direct light and have less exposure to the elements. For transparency sake this experiment takes place in Canada with a wide range of extreme hots, colds, some inbetweens, and a fair amount of humidity. Our goal here is to not do anything a regular collector wouldn't do. There will not be silica gel packets or any sort of moisture/oxygen removers placed in the box.

New Coins/Cards/Notes will be purchased from the secondary market to make sure the integrity of this experiment can not be gamed.
Nothing in this thread is for sale. Don't even ask. This is a multiyear project/experiment, if you think I would sell anything posted here then you do not understand the importance of this thread.
All pictures should redirect to a higher resolution version when clicked.

*Disclaimer:* With this particular note I peeled the hologram back and got down to the scratch security layer. Without thinking about it I started to use my scalpel to peel off the scratch layer. This caused some of the paper to lift with the scratch off portion. I spoke with BG4 after and realized I was supposed to scratch off this layer rather than try to peel it off. His advice is to heat the hologram beforehand even just by rubbing it with your fingers.. it will make the process a lot easier.

There are still quite a few coins on their way to me in the mail right now. I'll casually sneak them in every once in awhile when I accumulate a few of them at a time.

teeGUMES.
Phenomenal work. If I ever peel anything I'll be more than happy to send some of the items I peel to you regardless if you already have that coin or not listed. That's if you want it of course for the added variation! The reason being is just because 1 coin/item looked fine maybe another coin or collectible from the same lineup or version might not fare as well or might be much better having maybe been stored differently or exposed more or less to the elements etc.....

TeeGumes this is simply above and beyond.

Well done! As a key maker, we support this fully since people want to know they can trust our products.

You are actually helping everyone; because if the keys remain legible then people have confidence. And in the case (god forbid) that something is wrong, then the companies on this list can take steps to fix it.

It is a perfect way to compliment and actually check internal testing/ quality control.

This is serious business since at the end of the day, money is involved.

Thank you!

I'm no ink or paper connoisseur so I can't play favorites. I'm very curious to see this progress throughout the years.. even though some of the printing is really fine and clean looking, has it really "sunk" into the paper as well as some of the others? I tend to believe that the ability of the paper to retain the ink is going to be the superior detail over just a clean print job.

Look at the Casascius coins.. if I didn't tell you they were peeled in 2011, 2014, and 2020 you probably would have guessed I peeled them all yesterday.

Another note I wanted to make was that whatever was placed over the Kialara private key made it near impossible to get a good focus/picture when zoomed in. At no point could I really get down to the nitty gritty and see the ink particles or threads of the paper.

One thing I do know is that the creator's that have gotten back to me with additional information are definitely thinking about us when it comes time to peel, whether it be now or twenty years down the road. With our current group of innovators/creators we are in great hands.

A project I'd like to add is to submerge QR code/private key slips underwater for a lengthy amount of time.. put the "water resistant ink/paper" claims to the test. Lets see what 2021 can do for us first though.

TeeGumes......A question to ponder...Some of the private keys are completely encapsulated inside a hologram with no air or light contact( especially if facing away from the hologram), would this extend the life of the paper and or ink compared to similar ones that are exposed? Also to ponder, would laminated priv keys extend the life of such ink and paper?

A good article on paper and ink and the effect of light Photofading of Ballpoint Dyes Studied on Paper (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1044030505009839)

Let me preface my answer with the fact that I am not an expert in any field associated with ink or paper, just a guy with a microscope and an idea for a thread.

The first part of your question is exactly what we'll be testing here. Everything unpeeled should technically last longer than the peeled coins on display here. It really starts to come together when you have the data that we already have with the Casascius coins I currently have. 2011 | 2014 | 2020 peel dates and they all look like they were peeled yesterday. Mind you they were all stored in an "unpeeled state" with the private key insert facing the metal and the hologram loosely reapplied to the best of the once-peeled adhesive's ability to hold it down. I've been thinking about this and I have a 2013 Casascius Brass 1BTC on its way to me in the mail right now. I am going to leave the insert and hologram facing upwards like you see in the third picture of each coin here just as a side project.. I believe the more data we have out in the open will benefit the whole Collectibles area. I might do this with a few popular duplicate items, have an "Outlier" section of this project.

Laminating could prove beneficial but there are always the different pros and cons with each new step added to making coins. You may extend the life yes, if you choose the right laminating material.. as we've seen with different top loading sleeves we never really know whats good and whats bad until something really bad happens. You don't want to be the coin maker to find out whats bad.
Also with laminating I feel like the dimensions of your paper insert now change. Thicker, taller, wider.. this now means less hologram to metal ratio which makes your coin more delicate and prone to a hologram coming off on its own. You solve this by making your paper insert smaller to compensate.. but now your private key or QR code is printed smaller and tighter.. more of a chance for the ink to bleed into an unrecognizable format.

There are just so many "what ifs" to think of, I think being a coin creator today you have to look back and just see "what works" and focus on increasing security rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.
Now speaking of the wheel.. is it really a paper insert that relies on the lifespan of paper and ink? I'm already thinking about six months in the future when I pull all these coins out to throw under the microscope again.. the question already in the back of my mind is do I really have to scope the engraved coins**? Something to think about.

**of course I will

Side note: I'd be very interested in an experienced tattoo artists' opinion.

It’s a valiant effort, teeGUMES - thank you for sharing and for your time in doing this… I’d like to donate a Kialara Original back to you or whomever donated this one to be destroyed. Just PM me a mailing address.

I thought I'd add: In my latest release; Messengers, and because each bar features a non-replaceable one-of-a-kind work of art, I believe there to be a chance that none may ever be ‘redeemed’, or if they are, it could be far enough into the future that it is critical the private key is legible for generations. And that’s why I added inside of each a backup copy of the private key hand-written in pencil - because charcoal won’t fade, basically, ever.

Here’s the test key I made. It covers the front and back of a small square of museum quality archival paper which is then laminated.

Notable post by CryptoImperator that I would like to have documented here for future discussion about Crypto Imperator coins.

As far as I am concerned, this is not a widespread issue, if you can, please post or send me some pictures of your coins with faded firstbits for analysis.

What I can say is that sometimes, depending on the letters comprising the Firstbits it gets printed a bit blurrier, having a much smaller font size, also sometimes with the hologram on top it affects readability as window is not 100% transparent. What I make sure is that the private key letters are all complete, firstbits are just extra information.

See:
https://i.imgur.com/0QI8rPN.jpg

Here is a picture of a 2014 Dogecoin: https://i.imgur.com/W2iVjhv.jpg

Firstbits have not faded there, I have been using the same ink and process for the last six years.  For what I have seen in my collection, some are "barely readable" since the beginning. (Having released the coin list should not make that a problem)

Furthermore I have my own "Canary", a couple tubes of 2014 10k Dogecoins + 2014 10k Bits BTC stored in humidity of 60%+, which I open and redeem from time to time to ensure the key is still readable, no issues so far.

I want to be as open and transparent about this as possible, and verify if some firstbits are indeed fading, as far as I know no private key has "suffered" from this issue. But bear in mind that no process, of any maker, is bulletproof and there will always be risks with physical keys.

Any doubt, please let me know.

This thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5290065.0) had me do some thinking and searching for the best paper I can use for paper wallets and paper wallets for our collectable loaded items as well.

I have come across Terra Slate paper touted as The most durable paper on the planet.

TerraSlate is acid-free and is great for archival use.

    https://terraslatepaper.com/ (https://terraslatepaper.com/)

   https://terraslatepaper.com/pages/faq (https://terraslatepaper.com/pages/faq)

They even place the paper in a dishwasher to test it!!

   https://youtu.be/kWwkd-1LCEc

TerraSlate Paper has proven to be the world's most tear-proof & waterproof laser printer paper. Compatible with ballpoint pens, copy machines, laser printer and digital presses, TerraSlate is a synthetic paper that never needs laminating.

TerraSlate was developed to be durable, tear-proof and waterproof in order to withstand rain, heat up to 450 degrees, temperature variations, all while repelling grease, solvents and chemicals.

TerraSlate weatherproof paper offers superior laser image quality with the appearance, smoothness and printability of standard paper; and works great in most any standard laser printer or digital press. Most importantly, TerraSlate weatherproof paper is more cost-effective to use and has a much more professional look than laminating.

Well, I bought some and conducted an experiment to see if this is so....

One of our main fears with paper wallets is water damage.
So I printed out a set of private and pub keys, printed and conducted 2 different experiments..

https://i.imgur.com/C6HuX0U.jpg

The first was to just dip the wallet into the water for a few seconds and let dry...
Passed with flying colors...was able to scan the qr codes easily and also no damage done whatsoever.

    https://i.imgur.com/q4jVbDv.jpg

For the second test I placed the wallet under water in a tall glass for at least 12 hours....
Again it passed with flying colors. No damage and QR codes read easily via my mycellium wallet app.

   https://i.imgur.com/o6PuqLv.jpg

I have to say I am very impressed with these papers and will use for my project as well as any paper wallets that I have.

Edit: as per request from Mbitr (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5290065.msg55741621#msg55741621)  will do as follows>>  I will place under water for 2 weeks...test and place and leave in the glass for a loong time and every few weeks will test and place again...and on and on  :D

@krogoth - thanks for the top tips on the Terra Slate paper  :)
Just an idea - have you thought about immersing the paper for something like 2 weeks , ie, if you were on holiday for 2 weeks and you had a flood ? This would probably be the max amount of time any paper would be under water ? Might be worth a test  :)

Looks like a lot of new and old eyes coming back to the forum recently with coins. Ever wonder what's under your hologram?

Should have a pretty major update with new coins/cards/notes towards the new year, if not shortly after. Lots of coins in the post still on their ways to me.

I peeled a 2013 Casascius silver today and was horrified when the paper containing the private key started to separate. I managed to get it off and found what appeared to be adhesive on the silver under the paper.

Very worrisome and I am considering peeling the rest of my collection.

I've peeled the 2013 1BTC Silver/Gilt (already in thread) and a 2013 0.5BTC Brass that will be added to this thread with the next update and have not noticed the degree of adhesive you are finding in the private key recess on either coin. I actually happened to be right around the peeled coins when I saw you posted here and have taken these current pictures for you.

https://i.imgur.com/611yNUyl.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/611yNUy.jpg)  https://i.imgur.com/vc9SQcWl.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/vc9SQcW.jpg)

Things I can completely throw a guess at would be:
Humidity or heat causing some of the adhesive to run down underneath the insert

An application error by Mike Caldwell? Pretty monotonous applying holograms for hours and hours or even days on end. Of all the coins peeled and shown here so far this might be one of the first to have shown this sort of error application made by the creator.

There just doesn't seem to be any pattern or clue to the splotching pattern it ended up leaving.. this is definitely mind boggling because that adhesive should not be there at all. I'm interested in seeing the private key paper if you'd be willing to share with me even in private nubbins. Completely up to you but that is my main concern and why I created this thread and project.

Regardless of everything the paper splitting in two and being extremely thin should scare everybody. Trying to think of ways for if the thin layer that held the ink remained on the coin face down still... what do you even do? Should always have a scalpel or sharp/fine razor nearby when peeling, also if it starts to tear like that I'd personally try from the other side of the holo and hope that that side of the paper insert remained as one.

Glad you were able to document and share this peel with us nubbins.
Put an X on the board for paper inserts. Engraving looking better and better after every scary peel.

Good to hear nubbins. Loving the community involvement that everyone is showing. This is going to become such a big question mark once we break out into the mainstream collectibles community and we are paving the way to being able to answer the big question of "Are the bitcoin still on this coin?"

Ideally, a climate controlled environment is best. I use an airtight box for unslabbed/ungraded coins, and yes I use dessicant packages as well, just to be safe. Metals and moisture are a bad thing IMO

I store my coins and collectables in an air tight box or container with the silica gel packets away from any light as well...just like I store my stamps.

I also in that same box with the other boxes...place a large  Rechargeable Silica Gel 450 Gram Carton...that once saturated with water can be heated in an oven and be used all over again.

Moisture and light are my enemies here...so for my mags...I take color photo copies of the product and display that on my wall and not the actual item.
Did the same for my bitbills...only copies are displayed...wouldn't want the light to fade away my items.

Sorry guys, kinda lost steam and passion for this since the forum tech just doesn't show imgur links anymore. Let's say you're selling a coin and the buyer is unsure of the contents of the paperslip/ink condition I can on request check and verify that one exposed to the elements is indeed fine. I've just been visually checking yearly to confirm the ink is still viewable, just haven't thrown them under the scope.
Surprised there's no AI quick fix to fix all the broken images on this forum. Many many gem threads have lost their sparkle in this way.

Hey @teeGUMES,
I agree it’s a bummer to not see all the great pics that were posted.
Not sure about an AI to resolve this - but the pics are not all lost.
If you “inspect” the page on the thread, you can see all the original Imgur links.
Granted it would be a bit of a pain to take those images - download them, re-upload, and relink them all using a different image hosting service that works with the current forum.
But technically it’s all there.
Maybe a project for someone with a bit more time to do.  ;)  8)
Thanks!

If you “inspect” the page on the thread, you can see all the original Imgur links.
Granted it would be a bit of a pain to take those images - download them, re-upload, and relink them all using a different image hosting service that works with the current forum.
But technically it’s all there.
Maybe a project for someone with a bit more time to do.  ;)  8)
Thanks!

Any Casascius Peel dates coming up or anyone have any to report?

2025 Perhaps?

Interested in how this is progressing.

Thanks!

Not sure if you mean this thread but... https://casasciustracker.com/

TeeGumes seems to have been busy or away a while. I wonder the status of this project, but not worried. ;)

I noticed the same problems over here. Best of luck. waterproof plate savant.
