A hotel seems overkill, I have an idea for what the venue for the next meetup will be, stay tuned.


Nothing too specific, we met at the cafe, did an introductions round (including overviews of Bitcoin projects each is working on) and carried on to small-group conversations. It was about 3 hours total. I recall talking about the future difficulty equilibrium challenge, interpretation of exchange rate trends, block chain mechanics, securing a wallet, split-key signatures, viability of BTC-denominated loans, eyal's open business concept, Bitcoin coverage in the media, alt coins, and many other things I don't recall at the moment.

I would like to report we've had an amazing meetup. I think there were about 130 people (6 times as many as last time). I was worried there might not be enough room but Google were kind enough to connect the two lecture halls to make a large one. I think things went more or less smoothly (though I'll need to see the video to know exactly how badly I screwed up).

I actually think you did quite well, perhaps better than previous meetups.
Focused and to the point. There were a few stutters (I had a few as well), but that doesn't mean we didn't do a good job.

We already had someone ask for us to organize a special meetup for startups.
It might be some time before we get to do that, but it's definitely in our plans.

I will be giving a talk about Bitcoin in the Haifa Linux club in the Technion, on Monday February 4th, at 18:30.

The first part of the lecture will be a general introduction to Bitcoin. The second part will be a technical explanation of how Bitcoin and the blockchain work.

The lecture will be slightly adapted to the terminology of the free software community.

I regret to inform that there will be no videos from the January 2013 meetup in Google.

Google was able to provide us with a video camera for the event. However, this camera was based on mini-dv cassettes medium which are fairly hard to work with. Additionally, no experienced cameraman was available which means we were left with figuring out how to operate the thing. This led to several mishaps.

The first is that one of the cassettes we tried to use was actually a head cleaning cassette. It has a very short tape and once it finished we replaced it with a good one, so only a few minutes from before the event started was missed.

The two good cassettes had to be physically taken to a photo shop that can convert them to a more accessible format. One shop we tried handing over the cassettes to told us one week later that they couldn't read their format, and didn't provide any other info. Afterwards we tried a different shop, that one told us that they were recorded in NTSC (PAL is more popular here), and that it required a different set of equipment - which they had, but it was a long and costly process (100 NIS per cassette).

When they finally delivered the converted data, I checked it out and noticed to my horror there was no audio. The store confirmed that indeed no audio existed in the recorded tapes, probably because the camera had a microphone that needed to be explicitly turned on but wasn't.

So now we have video footage of the event without any sound, and as fun as it is to watch us making all kinds of hand gestures and wondering what we're saying, I don't think it's of much use. If there's demand I'll consider uploading the videos as they are, but I think it would just cause confusion.

It's a real shame because I think the event was quite successful and I wish we had a way to preserve it and make it available to those who missed it.

To better handle the next events we've now purchased a video camera of our own. It won't be of the same quality, but at least we won't have to scramble calling in favors to get a camera each time, and we can figure it out once and be confident that we'll get it right when it counts.

The Israeli Bitcoin Association is now collaborating with Thepeople (http://pc.co.il/) to create the biggest Bitcoin event in Israel to date, with hundreds of participants and a full day of lectures and other activities along several tracks.

The conference will take on Thursday, February 27. It will be targeted at the local market and most of the content will be in the Hebrew language. (A global conference will happen at a later time).

First, we'll be happy to see you all there, so make sure to save the date.

In addition, if you'd like to actively participate, please send us an email to conference@bitcoin.org.il. In particular, if:

1. You want to give a talk in the conference. We'll have a basic track explaining to people new to Bitcoin what Bitcoin is, why it's needed and what are some of its challenges; and an advanced track with enrichment material for people already familiar with Bitcoin. Please let us know some possible topics you can lecture on, as well as some words about why you're the right person to give these talks.

On February 27 2014, the Israeli Bitcoin Association (http://iba.bitcoin.org.il/) in collaboration with Thepeople (http://www.pc.co.il/) will hold a Bitcoin conference.

This will be the largest Bitcoin event in Israel to date, with a full day of lectures along two tracks (basic and advanced), guest speakers (Peter Surda and Edan Yago), and more. Note however that this is a local conference in Hebrew.

Perhaps it is not proper to ask question in these threads, but I am really interested in how it is to discuss, or even promote, bitcoin in a country so conservative it was banned to teach evolution theory in school until very recently?

Conservatism is of course not something unique for Israel, I could have taken another country, but I just saw that you have meet-ups and wonder how the work is going in such a culture setting.

Your impression of Israel is completely wrong. Yes, there is the conservative side but at the same time Israelis are one of the 1st to jump on any new technology.
Conservative? Only in some places. The biggest "gay parades" , nudity on TV (since forever) ........  As far as evolution- who told you that? Maybe in religious schools it was like that.

I think Israel is less conservative than, say, the US.

When I read the comment about evolution I thought "WTF is he talking about...", but looking it up it seems that indeed evolution was missing from the curriculum until recently (which is slightly different from being banned - while evolution was not taught as a subject on its own, I don't think any biology teacher avoided referring to it.).

So while you got that one right, my very reaction is an indication of the generally low level of conservatism.

Specifically for evolution, the whole topic of "evolution vs. creationism" in education is simply not a hot topic of public debate here the way it is in the US.

You could also say that in the US there is a large number of moderate conservatives, while in Israel there is a smaller number of extreme conservatives which, with a few exceptions, keep to themselves and don't have much sway over the public opinion.

Given this, and the entrepreneurial and technophile spirit of Israel, there's not really much of a problem discussing Bitcoin here.

I think interest in Bitcoin in Israel is in a plateau for now, the way it is in most of the world. We'll need some more exciting stories to get the interest going again - for now we're spreading the word to whomever is willing to listen. In the smaller meetups we have every 3 weeks there are about 30 attendees. Bigger meetups can reach ~120 people and the last conference had ~250.
