9years ago today, a new word was formed ….hodling

I’m sure the OP never thought the word would be so important in the Bitcoin world and that It’s been used as a rally cry.
I wonder if the OP ever looks back at this post ??

Shame on me, I was already aware the wideworld spread term hodl was due to a crypto user mispelling it somewhere ...bu, despite registering on this forum a couple of weeks after that epic post was written, I was somehow still missing it.

Wow finding such posts in the archives deserve merit. This is a legendary thread, I wonder if the OP is still active here. I would like to know how long he did hodl for…whew…as far back as 2013, posts like this reminds me how lucky I am to be part of this community. I could be a part of bitcoin history by just contributing on bitcointalk, one drunk post could become something that will be remembered for years to come.

Not yet here when that word was first used. It's initially what I understand as well when they say HODL which is to hold and not sell even in the bear market. But recently some of the BTC holders gave it a meaning like "hold on for dear life". I'm not sure when it started but that's now what they mean.

HODL is associated with Bitcoin as part of the lingo to use. GameKyuubi seems to be here still, the last time he logged in was July 20, 202. He must be Hodling tight still.

It's interesting how such simple things can have an influence on the community. I enjoy looking at posts from years ago, it's neat to see how it was so only on in the Bitcoin history.

funny how the first time that I heard about it I thought it was some kind of acronym and had to search around about what it meant and found out that it was just a typo. 

probably, looking at his account his last log-in was in July this year. besides, if it were me I would definitely do the same, it's rare that a word you misspelt would become a huge thing to a community.

It's pretty crazy to think that we have been using the term HODL since 2013, but I think that one topic is the craziest Bitcointalk topic ever!

It's quite funny what catches on, since OP probably had no intention of it doing so, and zero expectations. It's mad also how many things have came from the forum, and have basically caught on outside of it. This term has been used my several major news sources, and I'm pretty sure the BBC did a article explaining what it meant. I'll have to see if I can find it or if I'm just misremembering that.

This forum is covered in history like this though, which reaches well beyond just the forum.

I think my favourite part of the post is the whisky/whiskey conundrum in the OPs thoughts  :) Who would have thought that a few drinks would lead to such a classic moment in Bitcoin’s history  :)

It has been the history of the word HODL with 9 years ago reminding us of this word against bitcoin which is often spoken by someone and associated with it, this word will never be forgotten and has become a slogan for old Bitcoin holders.

If someone asks me about bitcoin, what is the best advice for investing in bitcoin: I say buy bitcoin and HODL.

There is nothing more beautiful than HODL, all Bitcoin holders already know about HODL.

I don't know if it was initially used on purpose or not, as writing hodling accidentally is also quite likely (I often do it by accident and then decide to just keep it there). In any case, it became a word of its own with its special context and meaning. Thanks, op, for noticing that it's the anniversary. Hodling is still a good strategy, especially if a person knows that they are a bad trader. And the author of the original 2013 post is right that if the price is low, it's a good time to buy and hodl. As we're still in the times of the bear market, perhaps this reminder will motivate some to grab this opportunity.

I was a month late after this post before I registered in this forum.  The first time I encountered the word seems like a misspelled word but never that I know that the word Hodling will have its own meaning in the dictionary.

It is funny to think that a drunk person has created a new term in history and become a popular strategy for those who aren't good enough to do trading.  It is always a good feeling when something popular comes out in this forum.  :D

I remember reading this thread in early 2014 before I even made this account. I kept reading the forum for a while with little dedication. It was a different world with all the Gox FUD. The situation with FTX reminds me of it a bit.

If we only knew how insignificant the 2013 crash will be in the big picture none of us would ever panic in 2014 or 2015 and those were some really painful years with Chinese bans and people preaching death of bitcoin. Congratulations to all the people who kept holding in 2013 and are still doing it. You guys are the big winners in this game and don't let traders who caught the top and sold tell you otherwise.

Newbies easily think it is typo, hold not hodl and holder not hodler.

I think the word hodling was not born from a post, but it turns out that the word hodling was born from a post.

By the way user GameKyuubi (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=26945) was challenging other people into suing him for mispelling wiskey but actually funny thing is  if he had registered some sort of trademark on that word he "minted" in that epic thread  he could sue 90% of crytpocurrency users if not more lol

This guy is a big motivation for Bitcoin enthusiast to become a strong hand in order to make huge return in the future, people who read his post and take it seriously already become a millionaire right now. It's just sad that many people at that time didn't take his word seriously and think it's just a joke since he's still drunk. While right now many people can easily trust a self pro called economist or professional trader that most of them are complete liar.

Thanks to gamekyuubi for inventing that word that's been widely used until today and will surely be used forever. Even in the stocks, I'm seeing people using the term.

That's a vast usage now and indeed what a word that just came from a drunk man that has given his emotional sentiment.

I also suffered when I heard this term (HODL) for the first time, I did not know what it meant until I searched the Internet and learned that it was a typo of a member of the BitcoinTalk forum that turned into a popular term in the Bitcoin world (the article was on Binance Academy).

But what amazed me was that this member (who had this famous typing error) is now a Sr. Member only, although he has been registered on the forum since June 19, 2011, as shown on his profile.

It is clear that he has little activity in the forum and that he did not make good use of the fame he gained.

When we make deep findings of people holding cryptocurrency and especially bitcoin for long time you will still find out more, because i believe that this thread will interest people and especially those who panic during when the market is full of bearish, during cryptocurrency investment what is necessary is to know your target, before you can keep your investment for long time.

Despite that he actually makes a good point. 95% of traders just lose money because they get eaten alive by shark-whales that actually know what they are doing.

I think it's pretty unfortunate that it was given an acronym or a slang and some people believed it's the actual meaning of the word. I'm glad investopedia got the history of the word correctly https://www.investopedia.com/terms/h/hodl.asp I don't know how many updates or edits was done but some guys probably corrected it and rightly so.

This is the first time I am seeing the user that used the term first in the forum though I have been seen and hearing the term in the forum but I didn't know who brought the word here. It is nice to hear and see that the forum has created new words...from the misspelling of the word holding to hodling. OP. Thanks for bringing the concept back for us to see. Let me also be hodling

This is an inspiration, especially with the current situation of the crypto market and the history of its always recovery is also a part of the trust of the investors because no matter how we see the bad situations of the market today, we always have the good and positive news where it will gonna recover and even push forward to create new ATH. When you dig enough and look back at the history of its price, you will find some interesting comeback and some inspirational stories that came from successful Hodlers as we called them.
