Title: Pastor Shuts Down His Church After Winning About $140,000 In Sports Betting..
Post by: Fivestar4everMVP on March 24, 2023, 08:38:06 PM
A Ugandan Pastor by the name, David Ochieng is said to have shut down his church after winning money equivalent to about $140,000 through sports betting..

The church members came for their normal weekly services and were shocked to discovered that the entire place were locked, and the pastor no where to be found, the pastor was later contacted, and he confessed that he become a pastor out of greed and not because God called him ...

This is an interesting news to read, please read the full version of the story here -https://tribuneonlineng.com/pastor-shuts-down-church-after-winning-n100m-sports-bet/ (https://tribuneonlineng.com/pastor-shuts-down-church-after-winning-n100m-sports-bet/)

The above affirms to the fact that many, are into what they do, not because they love it, or because its their calling, but because of the money they get to make from it, just imagine how many years this pastor have deceived his church members into believing he was genuinely called by God to serve as a pastor..

Now my question is, As a business or as a career person who is also into gambling/betting, would you quit your current business or career if you won the same amount of money from gambling/betting?
Be sincere and state your reasons for your decision..

Quitting once business or career to gamble is what is called addiction to gamble. If I have any chance to win such amount then I am certainly investing it into my business to allow it to grow or even expand to other businesses. Taking the money into gambling again is just like returning it back to the owner without any hope of getting it back. But with it in business one is guaranteed a constant flow of income

Holy f*ck.This story is as scary as funny at the same time,it shows our nature, deep in our roots is the insatiable desire of greed to have more and more and people will find all means to get what they want. This is I think one of the rare cases where people of religion deceive so openly,I know all of them or almost all of them do deceive people and nowadays I am pretty sure no one feels the call of God anymore and that is worrying.I go to church on Sundays and I believe God but I do not believe much the priests and rabins or imams for that other religion,it shows they are all in for the money.

As this decision I think this shows how grave the case was and that this pastor deserve to be in prison for sometime after deceiving so many people for so long,I know no one forced the believers to go to this specific church but this consists of a crime, the crime of cheating and scamming people.

I would not quit my job but I would invest that money in a lot of crypto rigs, buy crypto, stake them and earn passive income, that is my dream, first and foremost but no I would not quit even if I won that amount.

If am in his position who is making use of the church to fulfill the personal needs, then I would always want to resort into quitting as long as I have other means to survive by making use of my gambling winnings. However, if my current business is also in progress and leaving it would mean closing an opportunity to be profitable, then I would never quit and would always want to continue the business, and might as well add some capital from my winnings in gambling.

Exactly my thought, if I was a member of this church, I did feel very angry and disappointed in myself, for even as intelligent as I think I am, in was deceived for several years without the slightest idea of God.
This pastor indeed, deserve to be in jail, Now, i am wondering , after this experience, will any member of that church ever believe in pastors again?

This is a good dream, cryptocurrencies would continue to grow overtime, but they need constant monitoring, even as good as it is to invest heavily in crypto, i will also invest other businesses like real estate and the likes..

If i was this pastor, for the fear of God, i would still keep the church running, with part of this money, i would even expand the church more to attract more members..

Seems a bit strange quite frankly, as these sort of pastors are renown for milking a lot more money out of their congregation. I wonder how long he was preaching about being righteous and fearful, all the while he was gambling as a side hobby. He might have won $140,000 (or one million in local currency), but at what expense did it take to achieve I wonder and who's money was he spending to get there? I wonder if this really is such a ground breaking sum, maybe he is old enough and can use it for his retirement plan, he better be quite economical with it - while it sounds a lot it might easily run out after 10-20 years and because he's a gambler he might fall back into the trap and lose it all.

To be honest, I never see any reason to quit my current business if that is operating legally and is never at the verge of losing. That would be a loss for me if I do that. But on the case of that fake pastor, it’s really reasonable to quit and close the church so he can stop from his wrong doings. Maybe a big win from gambling could offer him a lot of help so he can establish a legal business that will generate him good amount of income so he can provide for his family.

I see him a good pastor, because his greed have made him a pastor. Now what he looked for have been won and he believes of better life with the winning amount. Once he have made a mistake and now he have got an opportunity to get out of it. Very few pastor's were serving wholeheartedly whereas the majority were for money. In specific there is lot of difference between a catholic priest and a pastor. To be a catholic priest he needs to learn many things and it takes atleast 10+ years of time. Anyone turns to be a pastor with the knowledge about the Bible. This is why more fake pastors seen around.

I do agree that being a priest and a pastor has a lot of differences.
Also, before becoming a priest, that person is given the chance to live outside the church to determine if priesthood is really his calling.
Whereas, you can be a pastor with little effort on your side. Maybe, just deceive even yourself that you want to preach and know something about your holy book.
And one example is the OP's story, I believe that pastor had difficulty in moving forward to be a pastor once he got such money.
Because if he doesn't have that amount, he can always be a pastor and live not in hunger, because he can always get something from church people.

Not a few days he deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for betraying the people. Because people believed him. Faith can never be earned by money. Faith is created by giving love. And that love is ended by this priest in an instant due to greed. And he should be severely punished for this crime of cheating so that no one dares to commit such cheating on religion.

I would not quit my job but I would invest that money in a lot of crypto rigs, buy crypto, stake them and earn passive income, that is my dream, first and foremost but no I would not quit even if I won that amount.
In this situation I can never be deprived of people's love. If I had this same amount of money, I would use that money for investment. Or I used to trade in trading with this equivalent amount of money. Especially in the current market position if you can buy and trade five bitcoins from there and profit $5000-$10000 per trade. So if I had this same amount of money I would do this.

Some pastors are there just because of money and perfect example with this is that Pastor. Unfortunately he is place or force to work in that position because for the greed of money and this is still good thing for their people because they know what's the real intention of that pastor and maybe they can find different person who have the real passion about teaching the word of god to them.

For me for winning that amount? I think this is not enough for me to decide to quit on my career since gambling winnings is temporary money and provably that pastor will use that money won on sportsbetting and he will be in bad position if he lost all of his money then no job to come back.

Agreed, I also have the same hunch that how much money he bet on gambling and whether it relates to funds from the congregation, based on the winnings of $ 140k then surely he bet high on gambling so he made high profits, so it is related to funds from the congregation or not but he had corrupted the priest's trust because before he always gave sermons on good conduct and renounced anything related to gambling, but in reality he gambled in gambling and shunned himself from goodness by leaving the pastor's activities.

140,000 bucks goes a long way in most third world countries, so I don't blame this guy for thinking that he's set for life with that amount of money. Although at the end of the day, I can see him wasting away all this money, and going back to his ways of conning people out of their hard-earned money, but I doubt it will work now since his reputation is broken amongst his people. Although this hasn't been the first time we see evangelists doing weird shit, even saw a news back in 2018 of some African Pastor using people as his stepping stone literally because "he's so holy that he can't be stepping on unholy ground", and of course, the Jonestown Massacre incidnet. This one's kind of lighthearted and funny since he apparently came clean about closing up shop amongst his followers, so there's that.

In the story, the pastor said he used 1 million(in local currency) to sign up for fixed matches, which for almost 1 year, he didn't hear anything from those in charge of the fixed matches, he said he almost gave up because he thought he's been scammed, but eventually, the guys in charge of the fixed matches contacted him and gave him a game with over 700 odds, he said he went all in on that game but didn't state the actual amount of money he staked on the game, at the end, he won over 100 million ( in local currency) which is equivalent to about $140,000 as I stated in the OP.

From this story above, I don't think he spent too much on the game itself, aside from the 1 million( which I believe to be church money) which he spent on subscribing to fixed matches.

It's so disappointing that there are servants who could run away from their callings because of greed. I think he just pursued being a pastor so he would have a source of income but I don't think turning his back because of money would be a good idea. He should have made a good exit and looked for someone to replace him first or even share a small portion of his winnings with the church. Greed won't save him forever.

If the money that I will win is enough for me and my family and to sustain our lifestyle then yeah, I might have to quit my daily job regardless of what it is (I won't stress the job of the supposedly pastor here).

But the money that he won in this example, it's not good for me in the country that I live in, you can just barely buy a house with that amount, + car and then some left for you that won't be sufficient to make our life easier. But if this is like a lotto, it's huge windfall millions of dollars and I think that will be good as a winning for me and my family.

This is one of those fun news, for sure he thinks it was a signal from God.

But the weird part of it is that most pastors do it because they really believe in got and not as a full-time job. Or at least that way is in my country, I don't know if it's different from yours.

And from what I understand, pastors don't have vices like drinking, woman, or gambling. The religion prohibits those things to them, so, is fun to see a pastor winning big. i would say: Casinos 1 - Church 0.

^It is always a part of a human to have greed and we cannot blame him.
For him probably being a pastor is a source of income and that is a stable way of making a consistent profit, but when he has a huge win everything changed including his decision. The reason could be, that is a good start to run his own business and live silently.
But if pastor wong stops gambling, it is better to quit serving God than continue to gamble which I doubt, gambling to them is a sin in the eyes of the church.

What do you think about this? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5446177.0)

But between your topic and the other poster your title and presentation are better I know my friend you don't mean it because @Alphakilo present his discussion in a way that we don't know about the subject of his topic I have posted on the subject that a servant of the Church of God cannot serve two masters at the same time, he will love the other over the other and hate the one over the other, it's obvious that he picked the wrong master to serve.
All that time he just want money because there's money and power attached to being a religious pastor, we hate this kind of story because they make us live on lies.

Imagine the donations that he received which ended up being betted in gambling establishments. This kind of example truly increases the stigma around gambling companies where people would definitely do anything for the sake of gambling. This is just too painful to read especially by the community.

Personally, $140,000 is a relatively low amount of money for me to quit my job completely. This kind of money is not those typical jackpots where you could enjoy resting and travelling for the rest of your life. $140,000 may be relatively higher in Uganda but this cannot give me a retirement life where it would give me a comfortable life to live in the next 60-70 years.

He should follow your advice, he should leave well as pastor from the church and he should have a replacement after he leaves so that no congregation is abandoned because the church is closed, I don't care about his gambling activities but he should be removed as pastor because his behavior is not worthy of imitation .

Seriously I think the pastor was just using the position to make money and was not doing for the sake of God, if you are a gambler and you are a pastor, if you are doing for the sake of God, then you will never close the church because of your win.

If you are a business or carrier person, I see no reason why you should stop after making money from gambling, you might still be running your business and you will still be flexing with money won from gambling, if you decided to stop your business because of the win, then where are you going to start from if you finish spending the money won.

One of the best confessions he could make and that too only because he won a life changing money according to his dreams, if not he will be scamming people in the name of God like the rest, inspiring story to remember  :D.

How long he will be able to survive with this win and it is certain that he will be spending everything to gamble again and probably bust majority of his wins.

Gambling can not be taken as a passive means of income since gambling results are not predictable and winning is not sustainable and inconsistent manner of the outcome, and us not financially wise to leave your life based on gambling, i won't personally leave my life to chances by depending on gambling because it's not sustainable.

-If I were in the pastor's shoes, what I could have done is not abandon the work since the church is also a charity and services to humanities I will spend some part of my winnings on the work and if he is not cut out for the ministry business, he can employ or appoint someone else who is gifted and called for the job and hand over the churc to him then I support the movement.

140k would without a doubt help me but it would not be enough money for me to retire or to stop working, after all even if 140k is a lot of money when you think about it not many people will be able to retire with that sum unless they invested that money or created a business with it, and when I think about the possibility of a hyperinflation coming during the next decade then most likely anyone that retires thinking they will never have to work will be forced to get back to it as the purchasing power of that money could evaporate really quickly.

In my current position, I probably wouldn't drop everything i'm involved in but if I was in his shoes with the same business and all then yes I would do the same as I think that money can be used to look for a better business or career.

It's unfortunate for the church members but based on the source you've mentioned it seems understandable that he closed it down since it was operating for the sake of money instead of its actual purpose.

It's all depends on how much money i won. If i won like 1 millions - 10 millions USD. I would be quitting my job. There must be an exception when it came to the business. You can run your business remotely by taking workers for your business. It's not the same like worked at a corporate.

Be sincere and state your reasons for your decision..
The reason is with the big amounts of money and opening the business will be so easy. You can also imagine what you gonna do with millions USD of money compared with $600-$1000 monthly salary.

I personally think that religion is the smartest scam ever invented. Yes, there might be proof certain individuals existed, but the bs miracles invented I don't really think have been proven.

Shame on this preacher for taking advantage of people so that he didn't have to get a real job.

That's what I thought. With that amount I don't retire, but it seems that in Uganda it is enough to retire.

I personally think that religion is the smartest scam ever invented. Yes, there might be proof certain individuals existed, but the bs miracles invented I don't really think have been proven.

I think it made sense when science had not yet developed, and it had both positive and negative things.

I suppose this pastor doesn't believe deeply and maybe he doesn't even believe and he did it just for the money, because what he has done would be a sin. Or maybe he plans to go to confession and may God forgive him.

Pfft, well that was quick. Kinda funny how the man himself admitted to other pastors pretty much just doing fake religious stuff. I must say that the stuff about how he got a notif that made him proceed to gamble is kind of like a coverup story to make it seem all accidental or coincidental, sounds bs to me ngl.

Absolutely not. The thing that differs between me to the pastor in question is that I absolutely love what I do. Heck, I'm even learning other stuff that I really like, and no amount of money is going to stop me from learning/doing what I love. It actually opens up a lot more opportunities to learn imo.

With that much money he can live in peace without worrying about other people's sins. Maybe he is tired of the ministry he is doing and wants to get out of that circle. I don't want to blame him because a pastor is still a human being, who still has lust and greed.

The winner of the gamble was a pastor, but why did he immediately act greedily like that and immediately closed his church, what happened to his congregation, it seems that his real goal in establishing a church from the start was just money and most likely he used the congregation's offering money to gamble.

Even though i won big, i will not leave my business because gambling wins are only temporary and the opportunity to run out of money in the future is very large, while the business that i am currently running has accompanied my life for several years.

Wouldn't it be very strange if we were a businessman or someone who had a good career and just because of winning a huge amount of money from gambling decided to quit that business or career?
Because people who have long-term thinking and healt mind know that winning any amount of money in gambling cannot guarantee a life unless we use it to create a business, because people who stop their business because they win a lot in gambling are lazy persons and think only to relax but on in fact, people who are resting will actually spend more money when they are no longer earning, and if they return to gambling, it will be possible for them to lose because gambling is not a money machine that always produces.
I think that the victory that the pastor got will only guarantee his life for some time after that he will be poor unless he uses his money for useful and productive things, but the most unfortunate thing is that he left his ministry because he had earned money from an activity that was always considered bad even by himself when preaching because most preachers always say so.

That's a reality that a priest does. Even if it was wrong, at least he had admitted that it was all because of his greed. Maybe after this incident, some people will look to him to ask for an answer.

And if I were a businessman who also gambled, I would leave the business that I was running but not suddenly but I would leave slowly so as not to raise suspicions. Or I might still be able to run my business and if it is going through good times, I will invest the winning money in my business to grow even bigger.

The above affirms to the fact that many, are into what they do, not because they love it, or because its their calling, but because of the money they get to make from it, just imagine how many years this pastor have deceived his church members into believing he was genuinely called by God to serve as a pastor..
Well, at least he didn't last when they asked him his whereabouts, and instead confessed everything. He admitted his wrongdoings.

Kidding aside, it's kind of funny and scary how he really deceived his church members to the point that he got money from them just to have funds to be used into gambling. I guess he's lucky that he won that huge amount, and because of that he stopped doing deceiving other people. I guess it's good for the members, and because of that, the pastor stopped fooling them.

I don't think so.

I mean I love what I'm doing, and I still didn't achieved my goals yet so even though I will win the same amount of money, I will not stop what I'm doing. I will just invest that money. I will just use that money to work for me, and get passive income.

Although winning a significant amount of money from gambling can be life-changing, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best decision to quit your current business or career. I think it's important to consider the long-term impact of such a decision. For instance, if I quit my business, I would lose the opportunity to grow it and create more employment opportunities.

On the other hand, if my business career involved being a pastor, I would undoubtedly resign and seek a new path in life.  :D

Maybe the pastor after winning big wants to live a luxurious and affluent life so he no longer wants to be a pastor in the church.
But after winning, he should be able to give a little of his winnings to help his congregation who are more in need and still be a good pastor.
It is not the right thing for a pastor after earning a lot of money to go and increase the good he has been doing for years.

And if I were a businessman who also gambled, I would leave the business that I was running but not suddenly but I would leave slowly so as not to raise suspicions. What do you mean will leave the business and prefer to be a gambler.
Business is a job that can make a person earn a steady income.
If after getting a win then leave the business are you sure that your winnings can be enough for the rest of your life to meet the daily needs of you and your family.
It would be better to use the winnings to build an even bigger business so that the longer you can benefit from a bigger business, the more you can even leave gambling if you have become a successful businessman.

This case is just a proof that not all pastors work as real pastor, this pastor main intention is just about money and it is not something new in Christianity world. He should be shamed of what he did and I'm sure he will regret his decision in the future.

Winning huge in gambling should not be used as a reason for gamblers to stop their own job/career in real life. Better to enjoy the winning without leaving what we have been doing for years.

This tale echoes the timeless debate: wealth or joy? Sure, a massive windfall might offer a fleeting thrill, but we oughta ponder its lasting impact on ourselves and our loved ones. If I hit it big in betting, I ain't ditching my current hustle. Real contentment is rooted in gratifying labor and deep connections, not mere possessions.

Moreover, gambling can send you tumbling down a hazardous path, ending in dependency and monetary disaster. Seneca, that renowned philosopher, said it best: "Money has never yet made anyone rich." So, let's prioritize crafting a rewarding, lasting existence over banking on fortune's favor.

Church is consider now as a business, and its free from any tax and with the action of that pastor he proves this rumor.

Well, winning that money is already huge but if you also have other profitable business better to expand it than to close it because a business minded individual will still look for other source of income and having that funds can make it more possible.

At least their community not know what kind of pastor they got, so instead of the pastor scamming them, his true colors is being revealed because he had won that money and wanted to leave as soon as possible, there is no victim here but the pastor himself. God has shown his power by letting David Ochieng win $140,000 through sports betting. Congregations who have listened to his sermons always consider David Ochieng sincerity to lead him to the right path. It turns out that what has been done so far is only based on money, not sincerity.
What Ochieng did would be different from other people if they won the same amount of money, they would continue their business and career because the opportunity to win $140,000 didn't come once every month.

Money is really an amplifier to the real personality and characteristic of a certain person. When pastor won $140,000, his greed shows up. It only means that the reason why he built the church is not because of his passion to teach others about religion and faith to God but because of his greed to earn money from church. There's a documentary on how a lot of people are earning huge amount of money by creating a church or creating a new religion. For me what he did is very wrong and it only proves that he is a fake pastor who focusing on earning money than to teach other people.

Instead of being a role model to his churchmates, he became a bad model and for sure his reputation has been tarnished because of what he did. He is now blinded by greed and he only showing to his people that he has bad attitude. Gambling is not actually bad, it also amplifies what personality that you have. Make sure that we have good personality before we do gambling for us to not be blinded by greed like what happened to the pastor.

I do business, If I win that amount of money, I will invest in the business I do, and get more machines, a better space and even consider selling raw material for the business I do so that other people who the same business as I will come to buy materials from me. I can choose to start up another thing or relocate to another place for safety, but I will not just close up my business.

For people who quit the job or stop their businesses, they probably did not have long term plans for their businesses while others did not love their career or business, but were just using it to pass time and survive like the pastor was running a church business because he knows how religious some Africans can be.

Not all church servants including Pastors are well committed to their callings. We had a pastor before whom we discovered that he's into drugs and illegal activities. Due to drug addiction, he has sold all the church properties and left the church.
Some of them are doing church leadership for money and see it as a source of income.
That Pastor who has won that amount have shown his real color and I'm sure that he will still learn his lesson in the future. He didn't pactice what he preached.

My country has the highest number of churches in the world. Most of these religious institutions preach about materialism which serves as a means of compelling the worshipers to donate money so that they can have materialistic rewards from God. Many of these religious heads intention is just to get financial gains.

This is not an isolated tory there's a lot of stories like his using the church for money and power and people should always check if their pastor has hidden agaenda or he has hidden characted because it wil be exposed later.

If his calling isn’t real then it’s a good thing for his people that he’s not there any more and I guess a good thing fir him as $140,000 is a lot of money where he is from. I wish him luck with his new life and hopefully the Church gets a new more committed Pastor.

$140,000 is a nice amount but it wouldn’t do much for me that I don’t already have. I was blessed to get into bitcoin early and the rest is history.

The OP's question calls for a deeper reflection and introspection of our career and professional life. If I hate the job that I do so much that I despise going there every day and then I was lucky to win a huge amount of money from one of my bets, the next day I would hand in my resignation letter. However, the work I currently do has a lot of career prospects and I love it. So, if I win a huge amount of money, I will go ahead to start my own firm. People who I would employ would be those in the same field as me. I already have a business plan, I'll consider the money from the win as a way of raising funds.

That pastor has sin against God and man. He sins against God by deceiving the people that he is a true pastor at the initial time, he sins against God by using the name of the Lord in vain and he sins against God by using the tithes and offerings to play bet or gamble.
And in the other hand, he sins against Man by using the church as a cover up as good man of God, he sins against Man by using their tithes and offerings to play gamble. And now that he has confessed, God has mercy in him. That is very bad ending of his Christian race. It is a poor finishing. Some might say God knows how to feed his people, yes I agreed but not in the world way, I know that Christians play gamble but those Christians are not born again Christians. Real Christians would never play gamble.

I would quite my current business or career only if I didn't like working on that. That is, if I were involved on the job just for financial reasons. Otherwise I would just decrease the workload to enjoy the profit made through gambling travelling and doing other hobby activities with people I like being together.

I say this because it's important to have an occupation in life, doesn't matter how wealthy you are. It's not unsual to see rich people living without pleasure or a purpose of existence, as ironically all they have is money and nothing else, leading to a feeling of inner emptiness.

Money is important in many aspects of our physical life, more related to comfort and ease, but it's not sufficient to supply most of our mental, emotional demands.

I don't think that will be reasonable to quit from your foundational source of income because you earned money from gambling except the plan has always been to adjust into a different source of income because no matter how much won, if you don't invest properly then the money is as good as gone some day.

I won't quit a business I've built just because I won a lot of money gambling. I will try to develop my business elsewhere to see how much potential profits I can get. Getting a win from gambling is not why I quit my business because the winnings from gambling will not always come when I gamble. Meanwhile, I can get a profit from the business over and over again, so I think this is more promising than playing gambling.

The priest was very lucky to get that big win. But he better not close his service, keep ministering to other church members, and not tell them that he has won a lot of money from gambling. It would be better for him than closing the service that has helped him so much.

Maybe what pastor David Ochieng did, one side is not good, but that's the reality, money can change anything including faith, he should have shown good behavior for his people, because we know gambling is also prohibited in Catholic and Christian religions.

Maybe it's interesting if other places, we have to make a title (gambling can shake the priest's faith), I consider the gambling betting win for pastor David Ochieng, classified as the biggest win in the sports betting category.

Indeed some things that I have seen gambling can make some priests dark, they think money is everything, that shouldn't be the case, hopefully this doesn't happen again to other priests.

As for the quitting of job, it depends on the type of job I'm doing if I work in a place where I believe that the pay isn't worth the stress I might quit my job and look for a means to establish my own business, but if it's a very nice job and the pay is good enough I might consider continue working there and at the same time make plan to setup my own business and eventually stop/quit my job. It's only going to take time but eventually I'm going to quit, but the amount won and the type of job will determine how long that will take effect.
