Title: | POLL | Best suited place for bitcoin symbol's before or after amounts?
Post by: arabspaceship123 on September 01, 2023, 11:45:42 PM
I've seen amounts written in words like 1BTC 1 BTC but not like BTC1 BTC 1 so that's easy.

I'm asking if the best place for symbol's at the beginning or end of amounts. I've seen both styles. If you're writing amounts where's the best place supposed to be BTC1.23456789 or 1.23456789BTC. Which way do you prefer using the Bitcoin symbol.

There's no standard of placing bitcoin symbol in a number/decimals. The same for other currencies. I even doesn't have permanent way to place it, sometimes before then sometime after lol. So feel free to place it anywhere you like

Some countries prefer to write their currency symbols after the end of the figure in question, especially for some non-English-speaking countries, but I have seen it as a culture, and I don't know if it's official that a currency symbol appears first before the figure, that is to say, " $100, €100, ¥ 100, #100.

So when it comes to BTC, I think the best way it should be placed is based on who you are addressing it to and who is going to best understand what you mean by it. But in whatever way that it's written, it doesn't change the number, which is Carrie's; only the place that figures appear changes and not the number, and I think that's understandable by many.

It's a cryptocurrency so just like all other known currencies, the symbol/sign should come before and not after. So it's BTC10 just like $10. The currency abbreviation code is what comes after. So 10 BTC just like 10 USD

There's no strict rule for placing the Bitcoin symbol before or after amounts, as it often depends on personal preference and regional conventions. The most common and widely accepted format is to place the symbol before the amount, like "₿ 1.23456789". This format is similar to how currency symbols are typically used in financial contexts. It's essential to maintain consistency within your writing or presentation when using the Bitcoin symbol.

For me, The best place to put the Bitcoin symbol (₿) is before the amount. This is the convention that is most commonly used by Bitcoin users and exchanges. I personally prefer to put the Bitcoin symbol before the amount. I think it makes it easier to identify the currency and to distinguish between Bitcoin amounts and other types of numbers.

I'm writing in variations so I'm not the only person being selective. For my choice it's some times before or after on random writing.

$100, €100, ¥ 100 BTC100
100$, 100€, 100 ¥ 100BTC

The top's correct so looks better BTC100

I won't really call it correct since there's no standard as mentioned above. It probably feels that way because you're more familiar with it, just like how you write fiat. At the end of the day, this is just a matter of consensus, and I've never seen one argue strongly against the other. I'd say just use whatever you like, the other party is likely going to understand anyway.

Is there a rule on this that Bitcoin needs to abide with? What now if all the fiat currencies that we know use this kind of standard? Should Bitcoin follow their ways?

As a matter of fact, if I were to treat Bitcoin as a new and revolutionary currency that goes against the flow of all these rotten fiat currencies, I might even be convinced that Bitcoin's symbol should be placed after, if only to show that this currency is different from the rest, that this currency is a form of resistance to the fiat standard.

It depends on the country one is from, doesnt it?
Because I have seen people from the United States on internet who use the dollar symbol before the amounts, but here in my country, we use the amount first and then the symbol, regardless whether we try to express a quantity in local or foreign currency.

So keeping in mind that, I would prefer to see Bitcoin amounts being expressed that way: 1 BTC
It looks more familiar to me, and it would certainly be suitable for anyone in my region, not something it would make much difference within the ecosystem, obviously tho.  :P

In Bitcoin Core wallet, you have a position as 0.01 BTC.

I vote for this position for Bitcoin symbol, after the number.

I don't really think it's an issue to mull over, the best thing to do is we represent what bitcoin is, which is freedom so that means that you can place wherever you want that bitcoin symbol is because no one is going to stop you and it's not like it's causing a huge semantics issue on the side of people doing these transactions, the numbers is what matters the most.

Very simple, we do not need to do any mathematical calculations to determine where the position of symbols /signs for Bitcoin, officially should be BTC2.,  except if one wishes to write their way by placing the sign after the number and still doesn't change the amount.
So far we are dealing with a currency here, normally, we should also follow the same method we write or place our fiat currency signs.

I’ve got used to it being posted in both ways. The official bitcoin symbol stands out and you can see it’s an amount that’s required to be paid by Bitcoin. I don’t have an issue with this but I don’t like the micro and milli units of bitcoin.

Whenever I see uB or mB I always think I will pay the wrong amount and need to get calculator out. Even if my wallet supports those formats, I want to see in sat form of how much I am spending.

Bitcoin is not a fiat currency which needs Individual identity. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency with a symbol as a resemblance to its existence. You can add it's symbol in any ways you want there is nothing wrong with that. I personally prefer adding the BTC1 before the numbers. When I am not putting the symbol I generally add BTC after the number. It all depends on you as an independent Individual where you want it to be.

I see that the issue is not important what is the best place for the symbol at the beginning or end of the sums? Both methods can be used. This varies between countries and different languages as well, so there is no problem using either method.

According to the standards of the English language, I believe that if a symbol is used, it must be before the number or amount, but if a word for currency is used instead of the symbol, it should be written after the number, but the standards for other languages differ, so I think that everyone should write it in the way they like.

I don't think it really matters as long as you see the bitcoin symbol or the word BTC at the start or the end of the number figure, that's understandable for everyone who has been in crypto space or at least engaged into bitcoin.
But for formality purposes, I'd prefer "BTC 1.12345" form, just like every other fiat currency in the world, so the people who has yet to hear about bitcoin may easily identify it as a currency or a digital currency to be precise by looking at it for the first time. First impression lasts, so the people who have seen bitcoin for the first time will not think bitcoin is some sort of a Ponzi or something like that, but they would always see it as a currency.

If the Bitcoin symbol is placed before the amount I will think that it's another version of Bitcoin, When it comes to the currency we are used to placing it at the start of the amount so it's just right that the symbol be put at the start of the amount.

When I was active in the Bounty campaign there was an altcoin there that was named BTC2, and they call it the new version of Bitcoin, we also have Bitcoin2 in the market https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bitcoin-2-0.
So to avoid confusion it's better for the symbol to be placed before the amount.

I see that many people say 1 btc instead of btc 1 and I personally prefer to use writing symbols or say 1 btc, and the reason is because my instincts say so, namely that I prefer to write the symbol 1 btc rather than  btc 1 but I also don't know which one which true, but in my opinion on this forum also the most mentioned is the symbol with the inscription for example 1 btc.

Bitcoin's a currency so I guess the format of how other currencies are being written is also applied on this one.

Correct me if I'm wrong with this one. If you are using a symbol like BTC, normally it's being put at the first part of the number. For ex. BTC1 or BTC2. It's the same as $1 or $2. If you are using words like Bitcoin, or satoshi, or dollar, you can put it after the number like 1 Bitcoin, or 2 Bitcoins. It's like 1 Dollar or 2 Dollars or 2 Pesos.

In short, if symbol, before the number, and if words, after the number. :D

That's good if the idea behind it's to place Bitcoin uniquely but it's used both styles.

But something revolutionary doesn't mean completely abandoning what used to be. BTC as a revolutionary thing in the economy is BTC as a decentralized currency which is the essence of the BTC revolution itself. As for the placement of symbols, I personally prefer ones that are easy for people to remember. And it is BTC1 not 1BTC. I think there is no problem with additional and optional things like this. BTC will not lose its essence as a revolution.

I don't think this should cause any harm to you or badly affect your way of writing because I know it depends on countries where they love placing their values before coming the currency.
Like our country Nigeria, we do places N before amount for instance N200 but in terms of bitcoin 1BTC meaning, 1 comes before the symbols but for other countries like Europe and America it may varies.

Simply put do it to match the culture, personality and preference of the user, community or organization you are trying to work with it. In the era where every is easily offended with anything, it is best to do your homework on whatever external crypto body you're working with to find out their preference. However, the standard and widely use is the one where the value comes before the symbol. So many people are already used to this one and would find it hard to adjust or odd if the symbol comes before the figure.

I think some posts I've read before are based on asking for help the AI.

It all depends on who or with whom you are going to determine its use, if you are submitting a doctoral thesis, for example, you cannot take it lightly, it is something that you should verify with your tutor, for example, he will govern the way in which that you must designate if it goes before or after.

Somes countries it is used before, being a currency expression you must place it before (my country).

Consequently, in a mere formalism (maybe): academic, , grammatical, financial, colloquial and niche where you are.

So, here in the forum you can see it is placed after,  e.g.: games and rounds (board) we can have a rule not written and it is the one that we can follow.  Or perhaps in another local board they do it differently, but the important thing is that according to the relevance of the situation, place, etc. It is what determines whether to place it before or after.

Hence, it should be consulted previously, in my case as long as the amounts that you sent are correct ( ;)  ) you can place before or after (I would say that this type of formality is colloquial/BTT,  niche ).

I do not mind where the symbol is placed as long as the amount sent to me is correct.  Each country has its own preference and since Bitcoin is one of the supporters of the word "freedom"  anyone can choose where to place the symbol of BTC.  It may look awkward if we see the symbol being placed after the number but it is still correct  and the same when the symbol is place before the amount.  So regardless of the placement as long as the amount is the same, I would not mind it anyway.

Just like what stated in this ↓↓↓

Well, when you talk about dollar, you don't ever say “Dollar 1” “Dollar 100”, rather you say “1 Dollar” and “100 Dollars”. So same thing applies to when you're calling BTC in the same way, you say “1 BTC” “100 BTC”. You don't say BTC 1 and BTC 100, that's wrong.

You only put it that way when you're using the symbols of the currency in writing, just like “$1, $100”, same thing applies to BTC, you use “BTC1, BTC100”

Bitcoin symbol should not be placed before the amount as it is not a fiat currency. By general convention, the fiat currency symbols are placed before the amount but that's where Bitcoin can be different. As of now, there is no specific rule for placing Bitcoin symbol but if there's a rule to be made, I will definitely go ahead with after the amount.

Bitcoin is not fiat and it should not follow the general rules followed for fiat currencies.

It is not a fiat currency, but it is a form of currency that have got value. It have got all the features of a fiat currency, and for that reason the symbol/sign can be added prior to the amount. As said there is no specific rule, and a poll conducted years back for the purpose of choosing where to place the bitcoin symbol is added in one of the earlier post.

This depends on your preference, but most of the time I noticed that when you put the BTC after the value, it is kind of easy to read, but if you are showing some data, it is better to be at first, like was used in fiat, but again, it depends on your preference. Also, when using its logo, it is better on before the value as it is more appealing and easy to read, but for words, it is better on last.

It's quite simple and understandable. You can talk about Bitcoin in different ways, like calling it a currency or an asset. When you refer to Bitcoin as a currency, you should follow the usual currency format where the symbol comes before the amount, just like in most countries. This makes sense because it's what people are used to.

But when you're thinking of Bitcoin as an asset, the order of the symbol and the amount doesn't really matter. Personally, I wish Satoshi, the creator of Bitcoin, could give some guidance on this for clarity. However, this is just my opinion on how to use symbols when talking about Bitcoin. If I'm wrong or if there's a better way, please feel free to correct me.

I choose to write my own one bitcoin in this way 1btc because, to me, it sounds correct when pronounced. Although that's my way and reason for writing one bitcoin(1btc), I don't know for others since 1btc or btc1 has the same value and meaning nothing changed from it.

Those placing the symbol of bitcoin before or after the amount of bitcoin doesn't change the value of bitcoin, in either way. Whether the symbol is suited before or after doesn't mean anything since the value is still the same. 1 btc is still the same as btc 1 no matter how you see it through.

People can choose how they write their btc symbols in a way that is more suited for them and it seems not to get others confused as long as they know the value and the symbols of what is written

Do you mean it's being a rebel upsetting world order banking.? Bitcoin's identity makes it entitled to build on uniqueness. It doesn't make it standard sign placing so we're putting it where we want. That can't be best.

Bitcoin is not fiat and it should not follow the general rules followed for fiat currencies.

There isn't enough activity in this thread. I'm disappointed it didn't receive attention any where close to what I'd expected. The poll hasn't attracted votes so it isn't easy to know what your opinions are. I'd like to see expanded discussion about the symbol. Which one's for you before or after amounts?

That means that nobody cares where the bitcoin symbol should be placed and if I'm being honest, having a standard position kind of defeats the purpose of bitcoin being free and not governed by anyone. I think there's no need for an expanded discussion, the paltry activity in this thread should be enough message as to the stand of the forum users regarding bitcoin symbol placement.

There's no standard of placing bitcoin symbol in a number/decimals. The same for other currencies.
That's not true (though I'm not sure if by "currencies" you mean cryptocurrencies or are including fiat ones).  I often see people writing USD amounts like this: 1$.  The standard is to place the dollar sign before the amount--that's true in the US, and since it's the US's currency and the US's standard, it should be the standard.  I just used USD as an example, but my thinking should hold for any country's currency.

I voted for putting BTC before the amount, but honestly I'm OK with either and I think I've written bitcoin amounts both ways.  But in any case, it's no government's currency, it's not controlled by any person or group, so even if somebody could set the standard for symbol placement, everyone would still do as they please.

Why is this even being debated?  Lol.  A much better discussion is the one about units, e.g., sats, mBTC, etc.  Even then people are still free to do whatever they like.

I don't use the Bitcoin symbol so I don't care. I usually write 1 BTC or 2 BTC. This is what I'm used to do.
Is this the most important thing in the world, when it comes to Bitcoin/blockchain technology/crypto adoption?
I'm sure that there are way more important topics regarding Bitcoin that we should be discussing.
You can write the Bitcoin symbol wherever you want. Before or after the BTC amount. It doesn't matter.

Putting the symbol where you want makes it a personal choice. I've used the symbol both ways in the amount. I know there isn't a fixed rule so I've used btc BTC and BTC some times.

Like when ppl say they'll send 700 sats instead of saying 0.00000700BTC or when you ask for 5 mBTC instead of 0.005BTC. Isn't that discussion settled?

Never thought of this, well I used to get confused while writing any amount in USD as $15 or 15$.. same is the case with my local currency PKR.. But I think what matters is not the placement, most people follow the standard, and most of them don't. For other currencies, there can be standards I'm sure but for Bitcoin whatever you like, you can use because I haven't acknowledged from anyone that this si a particular standard for writing valuation in Bitcoin.

TBH, I was expecting such of the question, a few days ago similar kind of topic on why Bitcoin's total supply is 21M was posted and I was like I haven't thought of it as it's, not the principle that everything must exist on logic, I know specifically for the phenomena it should but for the things like why your name is ABC.. it really doesn't make sense that there would be logic,his/her name is ABC because his parents wanted.

Well, just what you explain, most people used the left one, and there are some use the right one of placing currency sign.
Which i've come up that there is no standard of placing it in numbers, it's just preference.

In some countries it's fine to place symbols both ways in some they're stricter. In this forum we aren't following any thing it's every one using BTC or BTC in places they're comfortable.

It makes BTC ideal if it's limited in supply so Bitcoin's capped to 21M. There are theories but we don't know why Satoshi chose 21M. It should've included reasons in the whitepaper (https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf) but Satoshi didn't add it.

It just depends on your habits: in my language (I'm Italian) the currency symbol would go after the number, so 100 $ for example, but because of my job I mainly send emails in English so I'm more used to place the currency symbol before the number, and I realized I started doing that even when I write in Italian, I'm not even sure why or when. Anyway for me it's pretty irrelevant, every country has different rules.

I don't think there is a standard, fact I don't really use the Bitcoin symbol pretty much do social media or watch on coin gecko, coin market cap, and some of the VPS servers that I use only use a ticker like BTC ETH or DOGE

There was also a poll about this in 2014 ---> Bitcoin symbol positioning (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=489776.0)

and according to the pool people used before I think this become the default for some users.

The Bitcoin symbol should go before the value, just like any other currency symbol . It helps to read & understand value correctly  :)

I didn't know in Italy it's normal to use $100 as 100$ so it's after the amounts. When we're using bitcoin we're being told it's irrelevant where the symbol's put because it's a break from formal expectations. It looks like we're going to put the symbol where we want.
