Title: I recently convinced my employer to start paying me in BTC, it has been great
Post by: wd1 on October 08, 2023, 04:06:38 AM
I live in an underdeveloped country, but I work remotely for a fairly good web development agency. We don't have a lot of financial services/wallets here, so we had to go circumvent a lot of obstacles for me the money to get to my local bank account. This whole process took a hefty fee, and time. And the worst part is the currency is absolutely shit and deteriorating (even compared to other fiat currencies),

Recently, I convinced them to start paying me in BTC. I save what I have to save, and convert the rest to fiat via P2P trading. Its so quicker and I get great deals, no more bullshit. I think this has been a great benefit of crypto for underdeveloped nations.

I have been accumulating bitcoin from a long time from my freelance work, but getting paid in it by my regular work feels awesome!

The bureaucracy involved in making international transactions complicates the process causing it to take more time and cost more fees for both parties. Good thing you discovered bitcoin and can use that to bypass all the complications while saving on fees. Ensure you protect your privacy by not reusing addresses when receiving bitcoins.

This is where the argument of bitcoin transaction being expensive fails. It is the same irrespective of the location of the parties involved, but fiat transactions is heavily dependent on that.

I have a trezor, so I think it does that by default?

Yup, transactions are extremely cheap, and this is one of the myths about BTC people have (especially compared to fiat), I think they are higher when you get into complex stuff like multiple inputs and outputs. But that's way above my use and understanding at the moment.

People use multiple inputs without knowing, you actually need the understanding to not use multiple inputs and save on fees when possible.

Inputs are the amount of unique UTXOs that are used in a new transaction.
- As a freelancer, client A can pay you 0.002BTC for a job, client B pays 0.018BTC for a different job and client C pays 0.01BTC. All these are unique UTXOs in your wallet.
- If you want to send 0.029BTC to a service provider, your wallet has to take all 3 inputs to make it up, which will make the transaction fee higher.

To save on fees, spend whole inputs when possible or spend from a single input and consolidate all inputs when fees are low.

Multiple outputs does not affect the fee as much as inputs does.

Does he pay you with black money? I find it hard to believe that a bank would have problems with you receiving income from a job, as long as it is legal and declared.

On the other hand, if at the end of the day you have to convert part of the P2P bitcoin to be able to pay in fiat, I don't see much difference to cashing in fiat, spending what you have to spend and buying P2P bitcoin with the rest, apart from the problem with your bank.

Actually, value remittance through the internet for those people who neither have access to the legacy banking system, nor access to online payments, is one of Bitcoin's greatest use cases. The legacy systems have control over your financial future because they could decide to censor us the plebs, OR decide not their services in some regions. But Bitcoin takes you out of that control. Great job, OP. The next step of your journey is to find people to trade person-to-person from Bitcoin to fiat. Great job! 8)

it's not that the bank has any problems with the op making money. The point is that banks with low trust do not get along well with others because the banking system operates on trust. So if a large European bank has to send (or receive) a transfer from a small bank in an underdeveloped country with a shitty currency, the fees can be really significant adding to this the currency conversion on a low-liquidity pair.

On the other hand, if at the end of the day you have to convert part of the P2P bitcoin to be able to pay in fiat, I don't see much difference to cashing in fiat, spending what you have to spend and buying P2P bitcoin with the rest, apart from the problem with your bank.

You receive a bitcoin transfer at a cost of $1 and only what you need for food is converted into the local currency by p2P trade at a small cost because you exchange bitcoins for cash outside the banking system (banknotes hand to hand).
I do bealive that such a solution can reduce costs and make life easier, especially if the local currency has high inflation and low liquidity.

This is what Bitcoin better than any asset, you don't have to worry because converting Bitcoin to fiat is fast and easy. So whenever you want to buy something, just convert it and at the same time you're still hold the rest of your coins.

Does he pay you with black money? I find it hard to believe that a bank would have problems with you receiving income from a job, as long as it is legal and declared.
But there's no way to know that.

Yep, sending foreign currency using local banks is possible as long as the banks accept it, the matter is only higher fee. Even it's not possible, I think Paypal is more popular in freelancing, but definitely it's better to use Bitcoin when it comes to cross border transaction.

Well, maybe its because you have no knowledge about how things work here. First getting a bank account that accepts international payments is very hard here, there are a lot of fees, it takes a lot of time for funds to arrive, banks ask you stupid questions etc. These are just a few major examples. And no its not black money, its completely legal money from an established and registered business. I guess it would even be harder for someone who wants to receive black money :) This has been my experience, experience of my friends and countless people who do business internationally. Just do some research on some freelance boards on how much of a pain it is to get money in underdeveloped nations and you would find this more sound. It isn't hard to look for.

Now onto your second point, did you read what I posted before imprudently writing your message here? Yes, I am converting to fiat because I have to spend some money of course for living, but the good part is all the bullshit and problems go away. Its so much quicker and cheaper. And I can save the rest in the BTC.

Yup this is absolutely true, the online payment system and banking is so limited here. I think people living in underdeveloped nations like me can start using BTC with palpable use cases already. I am certainly doing it.

You claim that your country is an underdeveloped country so we can assume that bitcoin is not legal in your country, if bitcoin is not legal then it will be safe for you to pay salary through bitcoin. Just saying from my opinion about bitcoin legality because as you mentioned your country is underdeveloped and as far as I know underdeveloped countries never accept bitcoin. It is a very good decision if you proceed with caution. Accepting payments through Bitcoin instead of accepting payments in local currency is another level of thinking. If you accept payment through bitcoin, you can hold that bitcoin for a long time if you want, and if you want, you can sell your btc through P2P.  Undoubtedly, you have taken a commendable initiative.

Yeah, I don't think its legal. But I am not worried about it at all, people use it all the time, there are ads and as far as I know nobody has ever gotten in trouble for just transacting it in BTC here, exchanges and crypto sites operate here without any hassle.

I think there is some nuance and complexity in what these terms mean all over the world, and it has some implications. But I don't think it affects people like me in any way or creates any apprehensions for me to get in legal trouble.

This is pretty smart. You can save some of the BTC that you don't need to spend and convert the rest to fiat as of course, you need it for your daily expenses like food and essentials. I'm glad that there are companies that are taking the initiative to be different and consider what is best for their employees. Also, kudos to you for finding a way around the system so things will at least get easier.

If you are indeed getting "great deals" then this whole thing makes sense but usually in all cases of P2P trading specially when people trade bitcoin to their local fiat currency, they get terrible deals with a huge spread. Meaning the price they sell their bitcoins is far lower than the current price on CEX and a lot lower from what they have to buy bitcoin at in P2P orders.

You shouldn't make assumptions about these things specially if you are getting serious about receiving bitcoin as your official salary. I don't know which country we are discussing here but there may actually be some regulations in place, considering how almost all countries have some regulations regarding bitcoin already. So try to consult a legal expert in this matter to avoid future problems.

You were successful because your employers know about bitcoins, If they have had no idea, trying to convince them to use a new payment method for just you that they do not know would have been more cumbersome.

Yeah so when I sell any amount of btc, I usually get 1-2% more than the value of that btc in that fiat currency. This is a massive improvement over actually losing hefty money. Do you have any tips where I should look at for P2P? Currently I use Binance, I know we are not fans of centralized exchanges here and justifiably so. But I have been using it specifically for P2P and to be fair it hasn't been bad. Decent search process, escrow and chat are available.

I appreciate your concern, but I really believe I am absolutely safe. Just to add some context, I have been getting BTC ever since I started freelancing, its recently that I convinced my employer for my main job to do so too.

Not disclosing my country was intentional, I wanted to keep that private. And yes its true that they had some prior knowledge about that, I am in the web dev business, so they were proficient and computers and had knowledge about crypto. Otherwise trying to tout them about it would indeed have been an arduous process.

Binance is a centralized exchange, even what they refer to as "DEX" is not exactly a P2P trade or decentralized. CEXes have their merits too, as long as people are aware of the risks and disadvantages involved in using them.

As for alternative for a true decentralized P2P trading platform, check out Bisq.

Pretty cool, so these have no actual KYC process in any capacity, even for P2P trading? Or is it just a veneer?

Compared to traditional forms such as bank transfers, using Bitcoin can minimize transaction costs, especially when transferring money between different countries. The message here is that smallscale individual cases see limited financial problems and have solutions through the use of bitcoin. Not only OP, but I think we would all be very happy if our work was paid in BTC, as BTC becomes more and more popular, people see many benefits through using it. We still have to look backwards because this is a personal issue, so we need more time for people to become familiar with the technology and use BTC.

This is a little difficult because many countries have not legalized Bitcoin so there is a fear among people to pay wages using Bitcoin. It is true that there are many positive things that can be obtained from this transaction, for example, small transaction fees or recipients can use Bitcoin with the intention and own goals (if indeed he is a Bitcoin user) but again we cannot equate everyone because Bitcoin has not been legalized and not many people agree with this.
However, in countries that accept many purchases using Bitcoin, this might make it easier.

Bisq is so far the most Decentralized EXchange with no KYC that I know of and every trade is peer to peer with the company providing the servers to connect peers and the option to use escrow.

This is incredible and wonderful news. The only question is how your employer makes payments to you in bitcoins. Because if there are any disputes between you and the employer, it will be difficult to prove the amounts that he paid you in your currency. Because the price of bitcoin is constantly changing, and it seems to me that with every salary that an employer pays, it is necessary to mark how much it is in your currency or the bitcoin exchange rate at that moment. But in any case, this is a great step towards making bitcoin ubiquitous.

It's not a bad plan, I was like how will your employers going to buy Bitcoin only because of you when you are not the only worker under them? But if they can use their Fiat to purchase Bitcoin and send to your wallet then they have my salute, because it's rare to see such people who listen to people working under them like that, that's a big rarity, most people will tell you to get whatever you want after they pay your salary in Fiat, they won't care at all.

I will also like to say that it doesn't matter, if it's a no from them, why not just collect your money and exchange to Bitcoin yourself? It's even safer because now your employer now you are into Bitcoin, most times this is not safe practice.

The way you confused this employer of yours is still surprising to me, like I've said, it's going to look more tasking for them because not all the workers or others are going to accept Bitcoin payment, so it's just you, many bosses will say a big NO generally.

A country being underdeveloped doesn't mean that BTC must be illegal there. Take note that a country may not have clear regulations about BTC and they may be hostile to BTC businesses, but until the country bans BTC or declares it as an illegal asset, you can surely send, receive and spend BTC in such a country. By the way, it is important that op understands his country's regulation on BTC, or just mention the country, let us search about it for them.

It’s good that the company where you are working agreed to pay you. As many companies follows a strict code of conduct, hence they pay in their desired payment method. So yes kudos to your company/agency’s management team who kept your request. At this point of time accumulating the Bitcoins can surely give you lots of profits in later period of time. So yes when you get your salary, just cash out that amount, that you need for daily basics. Wishing you best of luck and hope you make more profits in the near future mate.

Even if I buy it myself, it would have a came at a hefty cost and time. But getting them to send it to me directly fixes that and I get a lot more buying power.

Do you mean convinced?? But yeah, I think a lot of bosses will still not agree :( But I am pretty lucky.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

I think generally companies encroach on their employees a lot. But this hasn't been the case working for this one, and normally I am able to convince them on something if they can see how it would be of huge benefit for me.

Not all underdeveloped countries ban bitcoin, and as the OP said, he works remotely for a company so paying in BTC won't be detected by anyone. Even converting btc into currency will not cause any difficulty for him. But what I wonder is, did the company he was working for accept his offer so easily? And they're going to set up a bitcoin payment system just for him? I don't think anyone should get that priority unless he plays an important role for the company.

Some people have raised this point, is it really hard to buy BTC for someone who lives in a developed country? I understand that there are some documentation stuff that you have to go through once, but that's all. Buying and sending it is pretty easy. My employer is in England. I know we have this belief that credulous people have some inane apprehensions about crypto and its mostly true belief I guess. But these guys work with computer technology and have a lot of knowledge about it. Its not like I am convincing a grocery shop owner to do it.

And also to add some context, I am not the only employee who is from another country. They have a lot of employees like that (pretty standard practice for web development agencies all over the world). They haven't dealt an employee with crypto before, but I am sure they have dabbled in lot of payment methods and are very open. I think you have to be if you are employing people like this.

This is one of the many benefits of really using Bitcoin for transacting business. Under your circumstances with limited options, going for Bitcoin is the best route and the thing is that you are saving your money in cryptocurrency which you can decide to hold into the future and be your way to gain financial independence. You must be lucky to be employed with people who are open to this idea. I am hoping that more and more online workers and freelances can be paid in Bitcoin so we are contributing a lot towards its mainstream adoption. Nice story and experience with Bitcoin.

This sounds a bit strange to me.

I live in an underdeveloped country, but I work remotely for a fairly good web development agency. We don't have a lot of financial services/wallets here, so we had to go circumvent a lot of obstacles for me the money to get to my local bank account.

Are you aware of the fact that in some parts of the world less than 20% of people have access to the Internet? Somalia and Eritrea are one of the countries with the worst Internet access in the world.
No Internet means no ATMs and no card terminals in stores. To get money you have to physically go to the bank and request a withdrawal, or fill in a paper with the bank number of the person you want to send money to.

Can you imagine running a business where you work online and to find out if you've been paid by the client you have to go to the bank and stand in line to ask if there's money on your account.

We've been living so long in the world where everybody has a phone with a bank app and can move money around while commuting from work that we forgot how our parents had to do it when they were kids.

But even if OP's country banned bitcoin, I think he wouldn't have too much trouble getting his salary in bitcoin or even investing in it. Wasn't it many years ago when many countries also announced bans on bitcoin but we still invested in bitcoin despite those bans? So far we are safe, there is no reason OP or anyone else can't continue to receive payments in btc just because the government has banned it. There will always be a way for us to get around those silly bans. Because they banned bitcoin not because it was malicious, simply because they couldn't control it.

We also convinced my employer to convert some Fiat to Bitcoin and pay a portion of our salary in Bitcoin (BTC) .... and we love it. We gave them a fixed percentage (the amount we would have converted) ...and it goes directly into our wallets.  ;D

We are also lucky to have some local food merchants that accepts Bitcoin payments, so we can spend some of those bitcoins on lunch and drinks. Our Bitcoin meetups are also held in a local Pub, so we convinced the pub to also accept Bitcoin (LN Network) ..so we pay for all our drinks with Bitcoin.  ;)

Op, it's a wonderful story. I suppose it's a very specific experience that may not work in other cases, though. Even in poorly developed countries, people often rely on their local fiat currencies, and if a person works officially, payments are done directly via a transfer to a bank account (though working for a foreign company is a whole other thing). Fiat currencies are also fairly stable in many countries, making the choice of Bitcoin less appealing.
From reading the thread more, I understood that the situation's like that because it's international transfers, and yeah, that's a situation in which Bitcoin can really shine.

Do you have any tips where I should look at for P2P? Currently I use Binance, I know we are not fans of centralized exchanges here and justifiably so. But I have been using it specifically for P2P and to be fair it hasn't been bad. Decent search process, escrow and chat are available.
Binance is a centralized exchange, even what they refer to as "DEX" is not exactly a P2P trade or decentralized. CEXes have their merits too, as long as people are aware of the risks and disadvantages involved in using them.

As for alternative for a true decentralized P2P trading platform, check out Bisq.
https://bisq.network/
https://github.com/bisq-network/bisq

Pretty cool, so these have no actual KYC process in any capacity, even for P2P trading? Or is it just a veneer?
Bisq don't need any KYC requirements, because it is a decentralized exchange that don't need a third party to hold your coins but they create avenue for buyers and sellers to trade with each other directly. When using bisq, you should look for a merchant with good reputation, high trust rate and has completed higher number of orders successfully. It is a good idea that you convince your employer to pay you in bitcoin, because you only need to convert that amount that you will use to take care of your responsibilities and leave the rest in your wallet. Unlike when you are been paid in fiat, you might be too reluctant to buy bitcoin with your fiat currency. Also since you said that it is an underdeveloped country, inflation will eat up your fiat currency value but in bitcoin, your funds are safe.

Now onto your second point, did you read what I posted before imprudently writing your message here? Yes, I am converting to fiat because I have to spend some money of course for living, but the good part is all the bullshit and problems go away. Its so much quicker and cheaper. And I can save the rest in the BTC.

If you want to have a civilised conversation you'd better avoid adjectives like 'imprudently' because without understanding the first part better now that you've clarified it, of course it makes sense what I said in the second part.

Are you aware of the fact that in some parts of the world less than 20% of people have access to the Internet?

Yes, but that is not the case with the OP.

Somalia and Eritrea are one of the countries with the worst Internet access in the world.
No Internet means no ATMs and no card terminals in stores. To get money you have to physically go to the bank and request a withdrawal, or fill in a paper with the bank number of the person you want to send money to.

So what? That, again, is not the case with the OP, he received legal money by international wire transfer to his bank, which in the end he decided to receive payments with bitcoin because it was less hassle, it arrives faster and he pays no fees (or maybe the transaction fees are deducted from the total payment, this is not specified, but I'm sure it is much less than the international wire transfer fees).

Can you imagine running a business where you work online and to find out if you've been paid by the client you have to go to the bank and stand in line to ask if there's money on your account.

So what? Again, that's not what we're talking about here.

But he is also looking to become a trader and make money from it, is there any decentralized exchange that can provide that for him? If he is using binance for daily trading then there is no reason to use another exchange for P2P trading. Because basically, his identity was no longer anonymous. Furthermore, I also tried Bisq and I can say that it is quite inconvenient. I can't even find a trader in my country's currency, it's so limited in every way compared to CEX.

There is always a sense of fulfilment that comes with being paid in BTC. Bitcoin advocates value this the most and may easily save the ones they require in BTC and convert the remainder for their daily needs. The distress of needing to convert your money to bitcoin via p2p exchange is now avoided, as is the laziness of having to go through that stress. If I had a job that paid in BTC, I would gladly accept it because it would allow me to expand my portfolio more efficiently and without too much stress.

Very often, companies and employers have difficulty hiring a remote employee from other countries due to payroll hurdles. Bitcoin would seem ideally suited to solve this problem thanks to cross-border transactions, but this opportunity is not often used. Probably due to different financial statements. Or have companies and employers never heard of bitcoin?

What arguments did you use to convince your employer to pay wages in bitcoin? How did you convince them?

Of course, bitcoin allows you to avoid a lot of bullshit with bureaucratic actions and money is sent from anywhere in the world in a couple of clicks. Bitcoin is a great advantage not only for underdeveloped countries, but in general for any inhabitant of the planet.

I have been accumulating bitcoin from a long time from my freelance work, but getting paid in it by my regular work feels awesome!
Technically, there is not much difference if you received a standard salary, which would be converted into bitcoin. But given your situation and the difficulties with transferring money between different countries, then undoubtedly bitcoin turned out to be a life-saving solution.

Here is an example of using the advantages of Bitcoin. You don't have to deal with unnecessary things and you can receive your earnings via Bitcoin. You can also convert your Bitcoins into fiat money whenever you need. You and your employer made a great deal.

This is how Bitcoin can benefit people in many parts of the world. All we need is the internet. It must be a good feeling to earn and save the income you earn from your regular job in Bitcoin. Good luck.

Well I thought that P2P feature is used to convert from Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies to your local bank for a reason, the countries where bitcoin or crypto currencies are prohibited and can’t be used in stores or elsewhere. What you did is turning around in one point you know. I don’t say it’s a bad idea but if you want to save some bitcoin you could just get paid to your local bank, and do a P2P transaction to buy the amount you want to save instead of asking your employer to pay you in bitcoin than exchanging it once again to local currency.
Anyways, I recommend that you save your bitcoin in a private wallet, hardware or safe open source wallet that preferably isolated from internet and a device that you only use for the wallet. You can’t know how easily your funds can get stolen especially if it’s a big amount. Don’t depend on exchanger for saving your coins.

I like seeing testimonies such as this and I would like to congratulate on receiving your first payment in bitcoin. Imagine the rigorous procedures you had to go through each time you want to receive payment from your client. You can see for yourself how ineffective fiat and such payment gateway is. It takes time for recipients to receive their money and it also attracts outrageous transaction charges such as deposit fee, processing fee and withdrawal fee. On the other hand, Bitcoin offers a way out, it eliminates the need for a third party, it makes transaction faster and better.

OP you made a great decision. This is because it will be much more convenient for you to pay in Bitcoin than to pay in your local currency. Because if you have Bitcoin in your wallet you can keep it as an investment but you can spend your money at any time whenever you receive your payment in local currency in your bank account. And if you keep all your money in bitcoins, you must be careful about selling bitcoins and spending them unaccounted for. Apart from that you can easily convert from bitcoin to local currency anytime via p2p so your decision is very good. Best wishes to you as you move forward.

Everyone thinks of what's good and bad, we tend to make the best decisions for ourselves concerning crypto space. I'm ot taking part in this because bitcoin can turned around and dissapoint us by having a heavy dump in the bearish season, absolutely no room to call for alarm, other than applying pressure and been on the safer side. Receiving payment in bitcoin is cool and good. Simply a bold step taken but the problem is volatility of the project. It also have disadvantages prior to advantages, we know how volatile bitcoin can moved in this bear season, though it's quite understandable to some individuals not all.

If your employer was good with it then I think it's a good thing but isn't you paying fees on your Bitcoin transactions? I mean bitcoin transactions were kinda cheap at the moment to the honest it's like cents or something so I guess it's a great and convenient thing anyway but there are times when the mempool gets congested making the fees skyrocket For sure that could be a problem in the case with your employer since he's the one paying you Bitcoin, but I guess as long as your employer was good with it it's a good thing in my opinion. I mean it still wasn't perfect since you still gonna need to use your local bank because you need to convert that Bitcoin to fiat money unless you know someone that is willing to buy your Bitcoin personally.

Just avoid using centralized platforms or probably avoid storing large amounts of your cryptocurrency there if you really planning to invest especially for long-term investment just send it to a noncustodial wallet like Electrum. If it really works they might just use it for all of there employees so I think that's a great adaptation that could easily promote Bitcoin as well.

Bitcoin is always my first choice to receive payment from my freelancing work, while most of the person or agencies what I work with could pay in few of them aren't and they use paypal. Compared to PayPal, the time from which they pay up to I received it in my local currency, Bitcoin is a lot faster since the transfer doesn't wait for working hours, it's 24/7, and the fee is much cheaper. More of that compared to a couple years ago, more people and agencies can pay in Bitcoin now.

Well, there are always extra fees involved when exchanging BTC into fiat and transferring it to a bank account. However, depending the country, BTC fees can be cheaper than an international fiat transaction between bank accounts. That was one of the reasons why Bitcoin was adopted as legal tender by El Salvador.

Anyway, transactions fees aren't the biggest issue. The main problem is to find another person to sell BTC directly for the current market price. Most commonly we still have to sell our coins to platforms which buy only below price market, devaluing our money.

If BTC is quotated in R$131,000 (local currency), the platform is going to pay R$127,000-R$128,000 for that only.

I know the joy in you that you have gotten paid with btc and if I am not mistakenly I have came across some topic that says similar things, that means before creating a topic or thread you should always look out for a possible thread to know whether such or similar has been raised before to avoid repetition of topics. Accumulation always comes with reserved funds or something like spare cash may be cushion that could served you till your next pay day/week or month per say to be able to achieved your accumulation process or getting to your desired period of accumulation targets. There are many people who engaged themselves into this but due to lack of steady inflows of cash or since its a single stream of income it then endangered the only source stirring up stress whereby if the only sources seized or stopped you could be tempted to start dipping your hands into the previously saved funds which you have already destroyed all your efforts to hold btc for either short or long period of time.

I've got mixed feelings on this one, OP.  On the one hand I'm happy you're happy and that bitcoin is being used as a substitute for fiat, which I love to see.  On the other hand, getting paid in any type of crypto aside from a stablecoin exposes you to enormous volatility risk, and you seem more than smart enough to know exactly what I'm talking about.  Are you getting paid a certain amount of BTC per week/job or is your pay tied to your local fiat or some other fiat's value?

I had this thread open and then fell asleep, and I just skimmed through it to see if you'd addressed that but couldn't find anything.  There have been threads dealing with the question of accepting wages in bitcoin, but you might be the first person I've seen who's actually done it.

You have good reason for not saying where you live, and that's a good call on your part--but damn, I really want to know because I'm curious based on the description of the situation your homeland is in.  All my best, man!

As long as it's also not going to be a pain in the ass for your company to do so, which I don't think it is considering that they obliged to your request I'm pretty sure it's all good to go. Also a great start at saving bitcoin for the coming bull run since now you don't need to go through all that mumbo jumbo of processing and transferring/converting into different cryptos and fiats until you get bitcoins. It's all in one go and you literally save time and money in the process so it's all beneficial with little to no drawbacks. Keep it up and I hope your whole company actively offers that to your current employees as well, pretty sure that a lot of these colleagues of yours got bitcoin investments as well that they're trying to grow but they don't know they could actually ask to be paid in bitcoin so they didn't bother.

First, good job on being proactive about payment. Getting BTC pay? This is novel, especially for individuals in locations where traditional banking is difficult.

After being in Bitcoin for a long, I love hearing stories like yours, however theres a small issue. Bitcoin volatility - ever considered it? You see, its amazing now, but BTC might plummet. Its your call, and you may know better than most of us.

Remember: While getting paid in Bitcoin and eliminating banking costs is great, always watch the market. Stay smart, informed, and fantastic with your web dev gig.

My Salary is in GBP, so they convert it into BTC every time, buy that amount and send it to me. Does that address your concerns?

Thanks for the good wishes.

I don't know what you shared is true or untrue.

My thinking is your company must have part of their financial treasury in Bitcoin. They have to buy Bitcoin and store it in their treasury or they accept Bitcoin as part of their business and use payments they received in Bitcoin then assign it as their budget for salary distribution to staffs including you.

Because if they have to buy Bitcoin at time of monthly salary distribution, it looks odds with me.

But that does not solve volatility problem. I suppose right now you have saved some money previously and due that you dont feel exchange rate change when you pay. Just curious what you gonna do it tomorrow Bitcoin price drops to $20k and you will lose roughly 1/3 of your balance. I am always curious how people protect themselves from such scenarios. Because people are not crypto, we can not "hold" till better times or price and dont eat or drink.

I think buying bitcoin at the time of monthly salary distribution is more suitable because no company wants to lose money if it buys bitcoin at a higher price than before to pay its employees. Bitcoin is very volatile and many companies that accept bitcoin payments mostly do not hold bitcoin, they will convert immediately after receiving payment, with the exception of companies involved in the cryptocurrency sector. But my question, OP said he convinced the company to pay him in bitcoin, which means they have never done this before, why did they accept so easily?

Working remotely with crypto payments has been a real game-changer for me when it comes to breaking down financial barriers. XGo to be my go-to platform for this, and their XGoID feature, It's like multitool of crypto management. Seriously, it simplifies transactions and keeps my crypto assets neatly organized. If you're into crypto, you should definitely give it a shot.

I live in an underdeveloped country, but I work remotely for a fairly good web development agency. We don't have a lot of financial services/wallets here, so we had to go circumvent a lot of obstacles for me the money to get to my local bank account.

Yeah, there must always be a legal bank in each country no matter how strict they are with other foreign payment methods and banks now has an online version which allows people to receive their money anywhere in the world. This should work and is enough. No need to use a black money as it sounds illegal. Cashin in fiat is much easier than converting BTC to fiat. But, he should do what you are talkin about there if he started receiving BTC as a payment for his work. Each of us has our own preferences.

It may look complicated to us but maybe not totally for him and BTC still have some advantages than other payment methods out there. This should be the reason why he liked it better.

I'm nitpicking, but Bitcoin can't be compared to a consumer app like PayPal, because if PayPal or a simple fund transfer is available and easy to convert to OP's local currency then that would be more efficient. BUT if there's no other way to send OP's salary, and because there was a gap left in the market, then Bitcoin is the only network that could fill the gap. It's just like the Dark Markets buyers and sellers, no bank or payment processor will service it, therefore there's Bitcoin. Or the ransomware market - banks, credit cards and centralized payment processors will never provide service, therefore ransomware hackers use Bitcoin.

OP, your post seems vague and you have to answer some questions.
Where do you live? Turkey, Argentina, Venezuela, or some African or Asian country?
Where do you convert BTC to fiat via P2P trading? Bisq, Hodlhodl, Localmonero, Agoradesk, Bestchange or somewhere else?
What kind of obstacles are you facing for getting your money to your local bank account?
It seems that your employer has to convert fiat to BTC in order to pay you your salary, and then, you convert a part of your BTC salary back to fiat. This doesn't seem effective to me. Can't your employer just pay you in USD instead of BTC? Will your local bank accept USD transactions? There's no proof that you are getting a BTC salary. What if you are simply lying in order to get some merit for this post?

Because if they have to buy Bitcoin at time of monthly salary distribution, it looks odds with me.
That's not odds in my opinion, approving a request for one employee is not a significant problem for the entire financial system. Moreover, buying bitcoin is not difficult for GBP as almost all exchange platforms provide this trading option.
The finance staff might reserve stable coins in a personal exchange account that offers the lowest withdrawal fees for the OP's salary in the next few months, then convert to bitcoin and withdraw weekly/monthly.

Even if transactions are to be paid in USDT, it ultimately becomes the same when the OP decides to purchase BTC and retains USDT for personal expenses until the next paycheck arrives. Because the salary has been agreed upon in the form of BTC, it actually simplifies the process for OP to save their BTC, as in some cases, individuals with less steadfast convictions may feel reluctant to buy BTC. However, once someone owns BTC, they are often unwilling to part with it.

BTC is indeed intriguing, and I always consider it as a very positive vibe when an employee receives their salary in BTC. Although in some countries, transactions using BTC are prohibited, I believe it's still valid because you are working remotely.

The employer might really found an easy way to make the request of OP to happen. If it will be a hassle, the request would be declined. While thinking earlier, I also came to this thinking that the employer or the finance department have allocated enough funds to buy bitcoin on or before the day of the distribution of salary. But then, I remembered that in every employer, they have a trusted bank where the salary of the employee is coming from, the amount is being calculated in a weekly or monthly basis (base on their work/present days), if the finance staff would allocate funds to buy bitcoin for his salary and keep it as a reserve, isn't it considered as an advance expense for the company?

OP, if you receive salary in bitcoin, does it show as a full amount? Or the employer deduct the fees they spend to buy bitcoin? I'm really curious, honestly.

It seems you are in a situation in which you can take full advantage of bitcoin and its properties, in a way I can understand those that are not fully adopting bitcoin as they do not really feel the need for it, since they can buy whatever they want with their fiat and moving to bitcoin will be way more restrictive for them, however there are cases like yours which clearly demonstrates why bitcoin is needed, since without it your life will be that much harder due to the inefficiency of banks and fiat currencies.

Yes, this is the right problem solution for you. Submitting a payment request using Bitcoin is currently highly recommended, especially for people who have difficulty sending/receiving money like you. Because bitcoin does have relatively cheap shipping costs, and the delivery speed is also quite fast. So your payment when you get paid will definitely be more optimal and there won't be many deductions.
Apart from that, your boss will definitely be more helped by sending using bitcoin.
So it's not just you who enjoys it, but the point is that by using Bitcoin both parties (you and your boss) will be greatly helped. Apart from all that, you also work in the field of website development. So I think it would be very synchronous if paid using bitcoin.

But I have a question, are you the only one who accepts payments via bitcoin, or are all employees also paid with bitcoin? Because usually there are always pros and cons related to this. So, the opinion you convey to your boss/boss regarding Bitcoin, does this only apply to you or to all employees too? Because if all employees are paid in bitcoin too, it means you have succeeded in convincing everyone who works at the website development agency. And that is a very good move.

It's so easy now to send and receive salaries using bitcoin. No need to queue for long to withdraw money if you use bitcoin. That's where the convenience is. Another advantage of receiving a salary in bitcoin is that it can be saved for a long period of time with measurable financial management partly to be exchanged for fiat and partly for investment.
There is only one obstacle, not all countries accept salary payments in bitcoin which is legally permitted like accepting fiat currency.

Workers who live in underdeveloped countries who find it difficult to get internet will experience difficulties. But that is not possible because the company where I work is usually located in a city where internet access is available, so I will ignore the issue of difficulty in internet access.
If I experienced the same situation as you in paying salaries, it would be a pleasant thing.

Good job in convincing the employer.

It's a great option if you accept payments in bitcoin.
You already have bitcoin as a long-term investment and you can also sell bitcoin for fiat so you can buy daily necessities.
If other workers can see what you are doing and think that bitcoin is a good investment, someone may follow you and accept payment in the form of bitcoin.
But this should not be forced because it is the choice of each worker.
Well, at least you already have bitcoin from your job and can meet your living needs.

If Bitcoin is not legal in the country that doesn't mean he should not accept Bitcoin as a payment from someone else, this transaction happens between two people and you don't need to pick up a speaker and microphone to start telling the world that you accept Bitcoin as means of payment, the problem with the government about Bitcoin can only start if you set up a banner or a signboard with Bitcoin acceptance on it, this will draw attention and it could result in paying fine or even worse depending on the country's law.

Bitcoin was once illegal in my country too and I know that I can only get into a problem with the law if I make my interaction with Bitcoin public, so this person should be fine if they choose to maintain silence and avoid attention.

The only thing that feels off with the OP story is how OP can ask his employer to pay him in Bitcoin because there is no story about how the employer gets the Bitcoin to pay him, how did he know that the employer knows how to buy Bitcoin? Because many people don't even know this.

OP you acted smart and it is good you had to proffer that idea to be on the safe side and to save them cost of transaction charges and time delay before your payment gets into your local account. From the looks, I am meant to understand that your local currency is very poor which makes it more suspicious to look into by your bank based on the conversion ratio. The fiat system of banking is based on trust as a user have  posted based on that, the bank would like to know and have clues on your source of fund so as to be sure of the origination.

Your idea of telling your employer to pay you in bitcoin was a good and smart move because you have succeeded in making them aware of bitcoin and they have adopted it because in the long run after they must have seen the benefit of using bitcoin for transaction, they would have every reason to thank you for introducing them to bitcoin.

You also saved yourself the stress of going through protocols for scrutiny before receiving  your money as i believe it  would be in a huge volume in your currency which would attract attention as it is in GBP as stated by you. This method of payment would reduce the delay for you to receiving your payment compared with the fiat system.

Pretty cool, so these have no actual KYC process in any capacity, even for P2P trading? Or is it just a veneer?
According to what I know from my experience, Bisq is the only platform that works in a peer-to-peer format without imposing KYC procedures. User opinions about it have been good since its launch, and it has been solidly developed so as not to be vulnerable to hacking or manipulation.
One of the most important things about Bisq platform for me is that it enjoys great trust among users on Bitcointalk who support it on the principle of preserving privacy as much as possible. Personally, I continue to advise everyone to use it, but unfortunately the Binance platform is more popular compared to all peer-to-peer platforms.

It cannot be denied, transacting via Bitcoin across borders is very easy, efficient, cheap and hassle-free when compared to PayPal or other payers via most digital wallets

I don't have a stable job yet and only hope for the little money I get online, reading your topic really inspired me in the future if I get a stable job then I will ask my boss to pay me in bitcoin

With the way everything seems to appear with the current economical business challenges, except a business owner adopt bitcoin, he may ever be unwilling to make payment in bitcoin since it's not something himself had subscribed to, but when he's a bitcoiner and understand the advantage and benefits of making payments in bitcoin using the lightning network, he will either adopt making payments in bitcoin by himself or if he was advised to do so, then he will not hesitate to implement such for his workers.

Nice, good thinking.
About 3,5 years ago when covid started I had to do the same. I had no other way to get my money because my bank card from the country of residence ran out and they only send you a new one to your registered address, and only while your visa is still valid. And, I was in a foreigne country at that time.

So I was in a shitty situation and asked my boss to use bitcoin instead and after some hesitation, because he also wanted to learn something about it, he was able to.
Because of this and the weak btc at the time it was very convenient for me because I sometimes increased my salary because of that.
Bitcoin leterally saved my ass in that situation.

Thats a good idea to convince your employer to pay directly with btc! But most employers wouldn't do it if they are asked for it, so you are really lucky! In total, employers and/or businessmen accepting crypto for payments and salaries are making a small yet inportant step in adoption process. I think that soon there will be more people making transactions directly with crypto...

This is great, really. It is exciting to know that there is a shift towards crypto payments in your employment. I was thinking the same thing for the companies here in our country, if cryptocurrency is iniatially introduced within workplace, news through word of mouth will make more people curious about it. And fear of actually learning crypto would lessen. It might take some time, but the trend is definitely moving in that direction. Companies just have to ensure that employees have the necessary knowledge and support to navigate in this crypto world.

That's a very nice initiative and I think this was only possible because thr firm you work for are use to talk the whole Bitcoin concept if not it would have been difficult to really convince your boss to actually pay you in crypto instead of the regular fiat but all the same it's a good achievement for you and also your boss because he will be familiar more with crypto since the payment is all through Bitcoin. In a country where Bitcoin is frawn upon with a negative view it will be hard to achieve this.

You are right, getting paid in bitcoin always feels great to be honest, at least, I've been getting paid in bitcoin for a while now, so i sure know or have an idea of how good it feels, so far, fiat currencies have not been performing well, and on top of that, it is the worst currency for cross boarder transactions, as it not only comes with a hefty fees, but the transaction is always so slow that sometimes, it could take more than two weeks before the other party gets hold of money sent to him or her.

So bitcoin has not only brought about investment opportunities, job opportunities, but also have made cross border transactions far more easier and cost effective for freelancers and those working for foreign companies online and so on.

Fast money exchange is important when trading, but it makes sense to pay for online work or remote support, consulting, software and similar work with Bitcoin. The important point here is that if you have a physical shop or trading house and you turn the money in trade on a daily basis, receiving payments with bitcoin can waste your time.

For example i have a wholesale food business and when i give wholesale food materials to stores, we have to receive the payment in cash because there are suppliers who are due and i need to pay instantly, and in this case i cannot trade with the p2p method, i have to use the bank system. Here is the important part, that is, fast cash conversion. When Bitcoin achieves this, it will be completely a means of payment for me. But for me right now, Bitcoin is nothing more than a store of value and a tool for investing.

You can surely say that again. It would've been hard to achieve such an agreement if OP's boss is someone who is very traditional or closed off to the idea of cryptocurrency. To people like those having such change or a foreign system is a risk that is too much for them to take just for a single employee and honestly, they'll see it as additional work that requires time and effort that they would definitely not want to give. Additionally, you're right regarding the point of legalization of Bitcoin and the society's view or opinion regarding it playing a big role for others to make a decision like this as no business wants to be in the bad light in the eyes of the law and the general people.

Honestly, I bet if your employer is not a Bitcoiner there would be an impossibilities of being convinced to pay you on Bitcoin when they have zero ideas and considering the required processes of creating and protecting a wallet for security fairness.
I bet such risk can not be undertaken all just because of you alone when there have been functionable means to pay you.
There is not just prove to accompany your expression so I would just say it is a visionary instincts and a hope to enhance your earning through Bitcoin investments if you can get paid through Bitcoin but it would be easier if your employer is a bitcoiner then you don't need to get him convinced but ask him to pay you by Bitcoin.

Since you are working remotely and on the freelancing job, it makes it easier not only for you but for your employer as well, to give you payment in bitcoins. It would save him a lot of additional cost if he uses the bank transfer or other third party services like Western Union etc.

However, if you were doing a physical job in an office or in a multi national company, it would be impossible if the employer may accpet your desire to pay you in BTC. It is because usually the employer has similair methods of paying salary to the whole company employees, and they do not change it for only one employee.

For cross border transactions bitcoin used to be a source through which things can be more effective than making transactions in the form of fiat. OP is positive about bitcoin and he had requested for the salary in terms of bitcoin. When received in bitcoin it ease the choice of investment, because we can just sell what is required for our daily life and keep the remaining in terms of bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies as investment.

Long back itself this had been getting practiced in some part of the world. Many companies have begun to pay in terms of bitcoin, depending on the request from the employees. Maybe we can expect this get spread in the leading corporates of the world.

That's great news, I am glad that more people are being able to take advantage of crypto currencies. It's these success stories that will keep push the crypto community further and let other people join it. In the end it's up to the average crypto user to try and promote the everyday use of bitcoins and other cryptos. Either through asking merchants to accept our coins as a form of payment or by asking our employer to pay us through bitcoin we can spread the use of cryptos. The benefit of being paid in bitcoins compared to your local more volatile fiat currency could also help your colleagues. Maybe if your employer is open to the idea you could try and get all your colleagues to be at least partially paid also in bitcoin.

Its not enough to just sit back and watch the success stories; we need to become the success stories. Pushing for crypto's everyday use is crucial. How can we expect mainstream adoption if we dont ourselves actively promote and utilize it in daily transactions? Now, onto your point about getting paid in bitcoin.

The potential benefits of such an arrangement are undeniable. But, and this is a big but, convincing an employer isnt as simple as showing them the benefits for the employees. Its about addressing the issues that might arise from regulatory perspectives, tax implications, and the potential volatility. Overcoming these challenges demands collective effort. Why not organize a knowledge-sharing session at your workplace? Dive deep into the nuances, debunk myths, and highlight the potential of a crypto-integrated payroll. The more we know, the more powerful our arguments become.

The thing we do really avoid on when making suggestions is that it could really potentially make us really that being scared in terms of possible conflicts specially against with your employer. You are just basically putting up yourself on possible interrogation considering making out some suggestions as if you do know on how to handle a business but somewhat its not really that bad to make out those kind of recommendations for the better
because not all would really be that too open-minded when it comes to suggestions on which means that people or employees would really be that not that have that kind of strong or dedication
on telling on what are their ideas on mind but rather they would really be just staying up that silent and wont really putting up any care at all.
If ever they would be hearing out some suggestions then this is the time that you would be making one.

That's the beauty of btc to be honest. Especially receiving money from other countries. Unlike moneygram, western union and other similar cash wire transfers where you will be required to go through rigorous process and procedures btc gives a seamless transfer. It is just a click of the send button.

This is one of the innovations that bitcoin has brought to its community – of course. Anyone can send and receive bitcoin wherever they are - it's quite easy and simple although transaction fees can sometimes be expensive.

Under certain circumstances - bitcoin may be overlooked by many people for use as a means of payment, mainly because transaction fees are expensive for some reason. I know this isn't a big deal for anyone who is okay with transaction fees - but most users will switch to altcoins that have low transaction fees. Bitcoin can be used as an alternative or main currency - but I'm sure not everyone will be willing to adopt it. The OP managed to force her employer to pay her salary in bitcoin - while some social media influencers or other freelancers may have already accepted bitcoin as a means of payment before him.

Some people spread the misconception that Bitcoin has no intrinsic value. The U.S. dollar has no intrinsic value. People give it value because it is supported by the United States, and even more so by the U.S. military.  Bitcoin brings a lot of benefits and freedom to its user. Bitcoin is borderless, You can send your BTCs to the other side of the world securely in just 10 minutes. The freedom to live their lives on their own terms. The impacts of Bitcoin are enormous and many find it hard to see that Bitcoin protects fundamental human rights.
Bitcoin promotes freedom. It enables anyone, anywhere to send, receive or store their wealth. It also prevents governments or corporations from meddling in these transactions. If we turn now to the subject of the Bitcoin protocol, mainstream arguments regarding its political dimensions often centered its “absence of interference from a central authority.” That pivotal aspect of the blockchain is negative freedom writ large.

If your monthly budget is good then it would be better so save them there in the bitcoin and it should be a secured wallet that could give you some hope of a better future. Also you have to start some trading in your free time by just investing these bitcoin or it is your choice if you want to hold them for the future and if you want to sell them and convert them in any other altcoin of your choice to start investing in them. That would also make some money for you. I hope you would also got some knowledge about the bitcoin and about the trading from the start.

So, thinking about at your place, it is so awesome to get the monthly salary in the bitcoin after working for every month. Take care of these bitcoins for the bull season and get the more money.

That's a great option you have there and when you have multiple sources of income in which you can support your essential needs, it's best to have that total bitcoins salary rather than fiat especially when you want to hold it for the long term because it could even multiple your salaries for sure when you have enough patience to wait. Nevertheless, if you are willing to sacrifice your hard work and save your earnings from it, you better save it in bitcoins because it won't be just secured for you but it has a high chance of multiplying as well.

It would be better if our salary was to invest in Bitcoin, especially during a bearish season like now, of course it would be more profitable to be paid in Bitcoin. However, currently most people still rely on salaries to meet their living needs, and most people still use fiat for transactions, so I think for the situation and conditions in my country, maybe a fiat salary is still feasible, and if there is any left over we can still invest it in Bitcoin easily

Congrats to the OP. Not everyone gets the priviledge of getting paid in BTC. Especially, when most employers are skeptical of it. In developing countries, BTC does wonders to low income families. The only issue is paying a high fee per transaction due to increasing network congestion. It's not feasible to send small amounts of money to family and friends through the BTC blockchain with such high fees. If you're getting paid a decent amount of money, it wouldn't matter.

Nevertheless, seeing wages paid in BTC is a very good sign of crypto/Blockchain tech adoption. We're slowly heading into "hyperbitcoinization". If this keeps up, BTC could replace Fiat in the future. Just keep holding on tight, and who knows if you become rich someday? :D

You may have a great idea but it can create quite a few complications. Since you want to receive your salary through bitcoin then your salary must be received through binance pitoopy trading. Other than that if you accept Bitcoin as salary in any other way then who will bear the cost of extra Bitcoin in paying your salary when Bitcoin transaction fees increase. In this caseIf the fee is deducted from your salary then your salary will be much less than fiat. In this case, you must seriously consider transaction fees. Despite all these problems, various organizations may not be adopting Bitcoin as a payment system.

However, currently most people still rely on salaries to meet their living needs, and most people still use fiat for transactions, so I think for the situation and conditions in my country, maybe a fiat salary is still feasible, and if there is any left over we can still invest it in Bitcoin easily
If we can get payment from the income we get through Bitcoin, of course it will be easier for us if we want to save it and take it only for the needs we really need and we can use the rest as an investment. If we can do this well, of course we will be able to get profits from the investments we make, but it depends on us whether we will be able to restrain ourselves from taking all the income we have earned or not.

How will you spend this bitcoin to buy grocery ? You still have to convert to local currency with extra fees. Unless, you are saving all the money , it does not make lot of sense.

This is a small power of Bitcoin which bypasses all the obstacles and give you a straight way. BTC always help its users what if there is no Bitcoin,  you will face all the difficulties that come to you but with the help of BTC you are now getting your payment through a straight and safe route and you will change it through P2P when you need it. In underdeveloped countries I see for the time that a company support Bitcoin transactions and payments to their employees in Bitcoin. They are going against the laws of the state because you are living in an underdevelopment country and I think Bitcoin will be banned there if the company makes payments in btc, the company violates the laws and takes a great risk. But my suggestion to you is to be more serious about it and take care of your security and privacy so that the government will not do anything to you and your company.

Skilled freelancers can earn an average of $1,500 to $10,000 per month. As you are a freelancer your income is expected to be in this range which is a good amount. You are very lucky as you have convinced the company to accept your salary in Bitcoin. However Having clear communication and documentation is of course important when it comes to paying in Bitcoin. Having a system to track exchange rates at the time of payment and having a clear understanding of how any disputes will be handled will be beneficial to both employers and employees.

Payment flexibility in jobs is something that to me is not further taken care of by employers, cause compared to better wages and more serious problems it's something that would get overshadowed most of the time, but goddamn is it so sucky sometimes when you get your payments delayed cause the banks are closed and all that stuff. It seriously fucks with your budget especially if you're someone who's working for a company that pays just enough for you to get by.

Props to you OP for actually standing up and asking for more from your employer, I'm guessing this is because you've been with them for a while now cause I doubt that they'd do this if you're just a newbie or someone on probation. But whatevs, hope this awesome streak keeps up.

So how's your journey now OP, are you doing good while getting paid by your employer with Bitcoin? It's been a month since you've posted this thread and you've been logged in a few days ago.

I guess that you're enjoying it since you don't have to spend a lot of transfers when you want to buy Bitcoin because your employer is doing it all for you.

With fees now, is your employer complaining about it or it's deducted on you?

Good that you were able to convince your employer to pay you via BTC but it won't be easy for most of us and almost impossible if one is employed at a large corporate or organisation as they have their own financial system and everything is automated as they cannot pay you in any other mode except the fiat as it looks impossible to me that an organisation needs to first buy BTC or pay to the seller by sharing your BTC address and there are countries where dealing in crypto is still taboo.

But for freelancing, projects and services you can always request payment via crypto of the payer is familiar with crypto else getting payment through crypto is not feasible.

In situation like the current one who bears the transaction fee where it's way too high?

That's the "multi-million dollar question". Unless the OP lives in a country that uses USD as its national currency, he would be out of luck. The only way would be to sell BTC for Fiat through a P2P exchange, hoping someone makes the transaction. It's easy enough to pay for everything using BTC if the country you're living into has adopted it as legal tender. People in El Salvador and Central African Republic won't have any problems with this.

At least, the OP is off to a good start. Accumulating BTC is way better than accumulating Fiat. Who knows if someday BTC becomes the dominant force of the world economy? :D
