Title: What is the best way to store your seed phrase?
Post by: jerry0 on November 30, 2023, 07:54:48 AM
Seems to me the best way to store a seed phrase with a hardware wallet would be write your seed phrase down twice and break it into 2 parts.  Also make sure you have a passphrase for the hardware wallet.  Now you open 4 safe deposit boxes at 4 different banks.  But do so in a way where the banks are a bit far from each other... like make sure it isn't 1 mile within each other at least but preferably a lot farther away like 5 miles.

Now you put 2 copies of the 1st part of the seed phrase at 2 different safe deposit boxes at different banks.  You then put the other 2 copies of the 2nd part of the seed phrase at 2 other safe deposit boxes at 2 different banks.  You then write down your seed phrase in a piece of paper in your apartment or house.  You also enter it in a password manager that you save to a usb and the cloud.

OR

Do the same thing with putting 2 copies of the 1st part of the seed phrase at 2 different safe deposit boxes at different banks.  You then do the same with putting the other 2 copies of the 2nd part of the seed phrase at 2 other safe deposit boxes at 2 other different banks.  You also then make 1 copy of the 1st part and 2nd part of the seed phrase for you to store at your apartment in different locations.  This time however, you only enter the passphrase to a password manager that you save to a usb and the cloud but make sure you don't write the passphrase on a piece of paper in your apartment or house.  You could also make a 2nd usb flash drive and give it to someone close to you and tell them to hold it as a backup in case something happens to your usb flash drive or something happens to your password manager in the cloud accessing it.

You could put another usb in one of those safe deposit boxes you are using but if you do that... well you are increasing your risk since if someone got access to one part of the seed phrase and has that usb... if they somehow get into your password manager... then they have 2 out of the 3 parts of it.  So say imagine the government was to seize your safe deposit boxes, well then they have access to your seed phrase and your usb with the passphrase in your password manager in the flash drive.  Now could they always hack into it if they have your flash drive?  Or the only way would be to tell you to reveal what your usb passports is and/or the password manager password?

Would you say the 1st option is ideal?  What about the 2nd option minus the putting another usb drive in one of your safe deposit boxes?

The 12-24 word seed phrase etched on a steel sheet, with 2(not split up) copies, in 2 separate locations that you have easy access to, and packaged in a way where you know if someone has gained access to either of these steel sheets; plus using a secure passphrase. That should be more than enough. Less complexity, less chance of error.

Also, personally not a fan of digitization.

How to back up a seed phrase? (https://blog.lopp.net/how-to-back-up-a-seed-phrase/)

After you read it, you have to figure out what is best method for you.

Seems to me the best way to store a seed phrase with a hardware wallet would be write your seed phrase down twice and break it into 2 parts.
Your idea is bad at the start. Spliting your seed phrase to two or three parts does not help you to have better backups but technically, it makes a worse backup. Losing access to one of two parts of the seed phrase, you lose your bitcoin.

After that, I also read that you want to store it at banks, it's another bad idea.

I don't buy the idea of storing seed phrases on cloud or anything that has to do with internet.
I developed this idea of writing it in a Bible, it's sound weird but in there nobody understands or even wants to read it the way it's place in the bible. I split it in 2 different bibles or books that even if it's keep with anyone the chance of reading such books is very low and I believe it's a better secured for me. The pattern of writing can be upside down or something but I just manipulate it.

But no matter how you wish to secure yours at least someone should be aware of your plans in case of unforseen circumstances.

Steel plates will be a good idea, or you can make your own. And then used safety deposit box, separate them into two.

I think even putting it below or bury it around your house might also be a good idea, specially if you have a big area.

Or maybe a multisig wallet will do as another option:

  • Multisig wallets (https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/multisig.html)
  • Creating a multisig wallet (https://bitcoinelectrum.com/creating-a-multisig-wallet/)

I carved mine on a plate, stainless steel to be precise, and I also have a hardware wallet just in case, I use these two for different purpose, one for my altcoins and one is for Bitcoin only.

You can get a tangem wallet which is a NFC active MasterCard like, very secure and easy to use, not complicated for beginners like air gapped wallet, I think this wallet costs of $60, if you can't afford it just find a steel and use sharp object to write all the worlds on the steel.

I found this to be even more safer than writing down your recovery seed in a book, water and fire can ruin a book faster than a steel, even if you come from a place where natural disasters doesn't occur, fire outbreak can happen at anytime.

Dividing the seeds into two parts by dividing the words weakens your entropy and may lead you to lose your money, as if this is a problem, you will not be able to access all your coins.
You can use a 2of4 multi-signature wallet as long as you have it
4 safe deposit boxes, and then you can put each one in a security safe and spend from any two of those security deposit boxes, adding a passphrase in case someone discovers your seeds. This is the safest way to store your money instead of dividing the seeds.

This is a best share mate , thank you as I was looking for complete thread to check and how
to properly secure my seeds/phrases because of the current issue of Binance so i guess i would prefer having Hardware/cold storage .
and with the shared topic I now find what should I do now , thank you again.

I'm just keeping mine on a piece of paper hidden. If you're careful enough about it it's safe.

You should use small steel plates for greater durability because paper is easily damaged even with just a slight impact. Unexpected things can always happen and there are many things we will never predict, so we need to be careful from the beginning, don't be too subjective and think that nothing will ever happen to us.

The method of storing phrases using paper or notebooks is what I believe many people are doing because it is easy to preserve and move. And if in case you don't like to use steel instead, you should have at least 2 to 3 copies to avoid risks. I use both a notebook and a steel to secure my seed phrase.

As for me, I didn't make it the hard way and what I did is that I simply wrote it in the notebook (2 copies) and kept it away from the eyes of the people (friends and family members) in a place where it never looks suspicious or any clue that was important. I made it not complicated because I believe it was enough to guard by seeds phrase, As long as it was kept offline, that was hard for other people to trace it unless if there was someone from our friend, relatives, or any of the family members know and steal it.

And aside from that never put all our crypto in a single wallet but rather help it spread to avoid losing it all in case hacking incidents come.

When it comes to keeping your funds safe, everything matters mate. You stated in your post that keeping your seed offline is the best practice. Yes it is, but you should as well know that even the offline method won't be efficient enough, if you don't apply the best offline methods.

For long, there have been different methods of storing your seed offline, but not all are efficient or reliable. As time goes on, some of these methods can be affected by some natural external phenomenals. For example, paper which has been the oldest method, still can put your seed at risk of been lost. When thinking of using the paper method, you have to first research on types of paper with long lasting quality. Not just ordinary papers will be enough to keep your seed. But the best papers might just be your target. Also when you are storing your paper which has your seeds written on it, you have to be smart and keep them away from water or fire and store the paper in places with moderate temperatures.

Again, the metal encraving method, which is more efficient than the paper method, can also be affected by some external forces like rust or corrosion. If you choose to use this method, you might want to go for a good quality metal like the stainless steel or titanium. They have more quality compared to other metals.
In all, not just using the offline method will keep your funds safe, but also remember to use the best off line method.

Now back to op. Just as @Alphakilo has said, storing your seed using washers is a good practice that will be recommended. Just click the link which he gave and read all about it on the post by @ fillippone.

Stored my wallet seed phrase in two places offline and online. I save my seed phrase offline in notebook and online in google drive. But I have carefully kept my notebook in a safe place where no one can find it. Although many people may argue about my keeping this seed phrase, I think I have kept it very safe. A seed phrase can be stored in many ways, but it is best to keep it as safe as possible.

Many ways we can use to store our seed phrase, we have to realize that there's nothing we can do to guarantee our bitcoin safety than when we save the seeds in privately secured ways, there are some recommendations also made by some forum members on how to get this done and you can always go through them under the sub headings.

You can write it on a steel plate or on paper, but it most important thing is that you should have up to three back ups that you should keep in three different location very far from each other, where only you can have access to.

save my seed phrase offline in notebook and online in google drive.
It is not save to store your seed phrase online because it has been exposed to the public and anyone can have access to your seed phrase. You might wake up one morning and your wallet has been compromised by scammers. Go and delete it and store it only offline.

You might want to reconsider generating a new seed phrase and moving your funds to a new wallet because cloud storage is not safe. Hackers are aware that some persons keep sensitive information on the cloud and that's why cloud services are being targeted. Below are some of them that have suffered hack. Move your funds ASAP.

Whatever the options offered for saving phrases, the best is offline, not connected to the internet.
Storing seed phrases in steel, good. On laminated paper, great. Sharing two is also good. Everything is good as long as you are able to protect it from all possible bad things. What I don't recommend is saving phrases online.

Many members have suggested very well and there are many threads which already have been created on storing seed phrase in secure way. I like much better idea which is little bit expensive but it is the best way to store your seed.

@Alphakilo mentioned the @fillippone sir thread. They explained the method to secure the Seed phrase with Washers. This is even the best way.

And if you ask me so I can't afford such things. And I have a separate diary in my locker and I always write the phrase in my diary and I always make 2 copies of seed phrases and keep them in the two places. And I am the only one who know about these places. And I am still safe.😊 Alhamdulillah!

Just because you didn't have any problems storing your seed phrase using an online storage service, it doesn't mean you'll continue to be safe in the future . Do hackers or viruses need to ask your permission before they want to attack your data? That is why online storage is never recommended because we can be attacked at any time. Meanwhile, storing private keys/seed clusters offline will help us be more proactive in protecting them. You're putting your bitcoins in danger, man.

I think saving seed phrase offline in a written booklet is the best compare to online. Saving your seedphrase on a system, the system may go bad which it won't come up again or saving it on email, it can be hacked and never be recovered again.  The best place for storage is on  offline in the best way which you think it is safe for you and nobody will come in contact with it and you can always remember the place of storage.

Internet or online is not the best place because anything can which can lead to lose of having access into where your seed phrase is been saved, I think people shouldn't make online as the only option for storage of seedphrase.

Most of the different ways mentioned in this thread on how to safely store seed phrases are effective, so it depends on very individual to choose the best option that suits them. But have you considered in the event of war, or natural disasters where the places that you stored and hide the seed phrases got destroyed? I think that in addition to keeping them safe, it's important also to memorize them. This is no doubt a very big task, but it is worth memorizing twelve or twenty four words that contains your valuable assets. You can be refreshing your memory once in a while by going through the words now and then. Except a big impact like accident that can erase ones memory, it remains the best storer of information, all you need is to remember anytime you need the information.

Safety is not only in complexities, safety can also be obtained from simple methods and strategies. A simple method when practiced correctly can even be safer than a complex method wrongly practiced. Many bitcoin forum members will suggest complex ways that they do not even practice themselves, just to sound technical.

Trying to make things complex can make things difficult for you.

As we can see that many members have given meny suggestions and this forum has many threads regarding this topic. And OP has also shared his/her point of view.

Some people try to store screenshots of the seed phrase or store this sensitive information online which is really a bad Idea. Some of them store the seed phrase offline like they writen it on a paper or on a notebook and save it in a safe place.

This is an individual decision everyone make this decision according to his/her taste. If you ask me what I do? So I always store the seed phrase offline I mostly use a pen and paper to write down the phrase and save it to my safe place.

Because you have been riding a motorcycle without a helment and you're yet to get hurt, doesn't mean that it is safe to do so. Your seed phrase should not be stored online or electronically, because anything that is online is prone to hacking, and your seed phrase could be compromised in this way. Write your seed phrase down on paper, engrave it on steel or back it up with washers, but don't store it in your Google drive or anywhere online.

Seems to me the best way to store a seed phrase with a hardware wallet would be write your seed phrase down twice and break it into 2 parts.  Also make sure you have a passphrase for the hardware wallet.  Now you open 4 safe deposit boxes at 4 different banks.
That should be only when you have $1 million worth of Bitcoin in that hardware wallet, because anything lesser than that, I don't think it's worth such stress of storing Seedphrase in 4 different banks at a far away distant places, but rather for me, the best way I think is the safest way to stay your Seed Phrase is by a craving it on a metallic durable material capable of withstanding the test of time without wear and tear, while arranging it in a format only you and you alone can understand how it's meant to be (i.e either vertically, horizontally or diagonally). But anything other than that, I personally don't subscribe to it, but I don't know for others.

You only have to have problem once and your money will be gone. My advice is to transfer your money while you still have it to a new wallet and store your seed phrase properly, offline.

Here I want to say that I have not given anyone access to my google drive, if I don't give anyone access, how can they access my google drive?
Ever heard of hacking? These kind of things can happen to even the most careful& vigilant ones (btw, you don't strike me as one) and for that reason no one who actually cares about stuff like that will use Google Drive to share anything sensitive.

Regarding the question in OP, I store my seed phrase in two separate locations and I have contingency plan set in case something happens to me.

To those that say to the other person storing the seed in google drive isn't safe... is that person storing it in notepad and putting that document in google drive or just entering your seed in google drive?  I'm not sure how you store your seed in google drive unless you mean typing the seed in some type of document whether notepad, microsoft word or whatnot?  Is that what is meant?  Now if you enter your seed in a password manager and store that password in the password manager, that is safe right?

Okay it's mentioned opening 4 bank safe deposit boxes is only needed if you have a lot of money.  Well even if you don't, but it's a decent amount, isn't that the safest way though?  Okay I mention those 4 banks have to be far from each other but let say they aren't that far then.  Would that be okay or unnecessary?  Also the people that say the put their seed phrases in 2 locations... you putting the entire seed phrase in each of the 2 locations?  I assume yes but you have to break it into 2 parts right?  Since if anyone has access to it, well there's the seed?  Also is a passphrase recommended or not?  Since if you have that, well someone having access to the seed phrase can't do anything without it.  Now where would you put your seedphrase?  You can type that in your password manager and store it in a usb and also the cloud?  Or is that not recommended?  People say don't store the seed phrase online but how is storing the passphrase a big issue?  That seems to be recommended?

I agree, It's better to keep it offline or better to keep it under both online and offline because there's a pros and cons by doing both. Just like what I did, I keep it in my physical notepad so that I have my copy incase there's an unfortunate happen in my online accounts or mobile devices where I kept it, and the other way is I keep it in my google documents and mobile notepad incase my physical notebook will lost or destroyed unexpectedly. We will do everything just to keep safe our seed phrase and we all have different ways on doing it.

I plan to do this in the future but to make it a bit more attracting to look and not just some steel plate. I'm planning to do a Magic the Gathering theme steel plate where I would store my seed phrase on one side and have a decoration on the other. This is definitely the best way to secure your seed phrase but for those that can't afford it, I suggest using some sort of cardboard that you can put it in a plastic sleeve or something like you are storing some Pokemon cards to preserve their condition. Another additional but useful thing you can do is buy a small safe but you have to make sure that no one knows about that safe as small safe can easily be lifted unlike the bigger ones.

Storing your seed on a notepad file on the cloud is a pretty bad idea. But if one had to store it on the cloud I would use an encrypted Microsoft PDF file.

To take it a step further, place your encrypted PDF file as an attachment in a Keepass encrypted database file.
Then you upload your Keepass file onto your Google Drive or other cloud-based service such as a password manager.
And of course, always back your seed with a 25th word passphrase aka hidden wallet.

In the event your cloud server is ever hacked, the hacker would then need to break through several more layers of security before they could access your seed. Good luck with that.

The potential drawback of all these layers of security is having to memorize multiple different passwords for each of the layers. If you forget just one of them, you are screwed.
So you better be damn sure you have fully committed to memory and internalized each and every one. And practice using them at least once a week until you can recall each of them by heart
without even thinking about it. As the saying goes use it or lose it. You may think you have something completely memorized right now but if you haven't used it in many  months it would be easy to forget it.

Of course, you could just use the same password for all of your layers but that would kind of defeat the purpose of having multiple layers of security, now wouldn't it?
You could have it all written down somewhere on a physical medium such as paper but then you risk losing the paper or it getting destroyed, or forgetting where you have hidden it.

The idea you Ave mentioned is great as it will keep the seed phrase safe and I would probably think of t if I am hodling a huge amount of crypto in a particular wallet. But at the moment it's too much of an hassle for me and as a person who had already lost seed phrase of blockchain wallet in the past by writing and keeping it somewhere I have started a simple strategy of sharing the seed phrase from my personal email to alternative email so it's there in two separate places and also uploads the same in cloud.

Every method has risks, none offer absolute safety, but storing seed phrases online is always an unwise idea. Because the possibility of being attacked will be higher than if we store it offline. Online storage will bring us convenience and easy access anywhere as long as we have an internet connection, however the risk of online attacks is great and we will not be able to prevent it. Meanwhile, by storing offline you will be more proactive when detecting danger.

A question for you, have you ever thought about the main scenario: you can't access your email, and Google suddenly locks or deletes your gmail? You are using centralized services and they have enough rights to do that without asking your permission.

Is it unsafe for me to keep on Google Drive? I've been keeping my seed phrase in google drive for quite some time now but so far I haven't had a problem. Here I want to say that I have not given anyone access to my google drive, if I don't give anyone access, how can they access my google drive?

Just because you didn't have any problems storing your seed phrase using an online storage service, it doesn't mean you'll continue to be safe in the future . Do hackers or viruses need to ask your permission before they want to attack your data? That is why online storage is never recommended because we can be attacked at any time. Meanwhile, storing private keys/seed clusters offline will help us be more proactive in protecting them. You're putting your bitcoins in danger, man.
Yes, you do have a point, but the thing is, if for him Google Drive is safe and he doesn't encounter any problems, then so be it. The safety of his property will depend on the owner, so we can't dictate it. Even if we want to advise other people about what is safe or not, the call will be with the owner. We have different ways of storing our seed phrase; it depends on what they know is safe or what they only know. What the real problem is is that even if the owner of the accounts keeps their accounts, seed phrase, or any kind of password, if the owner makes a little mistake and the hackers or malicious malware get into it, then it will be a problem. There's nothing safe on the internet. Remember that, as long as we are connected to the internet, we have no privacy or what. The safety will depend on the owner itself.

Well, I don't know about any other persons, but for me, the most and convenient way to safely keep my seed phrase has always been to write them down on a piece of paper and keep it in a place that is safe.

I have never tried anything complicated as the idea op shared, but for me, I have seed phrase to most of my wallets written in multiple random notes of mine, what I do is, randomly include my seed phrases in between my notes, so that even if someone picks up that note and read, he or she won't notice anything like a seed phrase there, this is how I have manged to keep my seed phrases safe for several years now without worry.

I have also tried this method before. Writing it on a piece of paper to keep your seed phrase is a good strategy, however, it is prone to getting eaten by cockroaches/rats. Unless you have a vault where you can guarantee the security of your seed phrase that is written on a piece of paper. That's why I switched to using a plate with my seed phrase on it. This way, I can remove worrying whether my seed phrase is still safe or do I need to switch again as this method lasts longer.

People are saying that using Google Drive is not safe which I also tried before, since then, I have transferred all my documents/files/important information offline where I can secure it myself rather than letting it be exposed online.

You store your seed phrase in two email addresses and also in the cloud, meaninig your seed phrase is stored in three different online and electronic locations, that's three different points of attack and failure. This is not a recommended way to store your seed phrase, sometimes i wonder whether some of you guys read the recommended advise that is repeated in this forum on a daily basis. If you had lost your seed phrase you wrote down like you said, then that is down to your own opsec.

The most recommended option is to write your seed phrase on paper and keep it in different locations or to engrave it on a steel plate. For extra layers of security, you should set up a multisig wallet or extend your seed phrase with a passphrase.

My system of savings phrases and private entry keys to my wallets and other related software accounts is that I have had this one-time email address that I never forgets the password even if I have to forget any other passwords because it is as my notebook specifically were my phrases and private keys are stored.
I am backed up the email address for authentication and verifications with an phone number and an email that is not associated with no other signatures.
With this I don't even have to keep any of my wallet accounts logged on when It is not in used because I can easily log on to my retrieval or my notebook password saving email and get whatever passwords lost or forgotten.

Alternatively, I also have a the hardware storages for my phrases and private keys taken down in between other of my written informations so as to keep off attentions from any that comes through it though it is not tolerate ably handle but with extremely conciousness so, even if anyone comes across my hardware passwords storages it would be unreasonable to em about what it is about but verily identifiable and best known to me.

It is quite susceptible for a piece of paper to be used to store seed phrases.
Of course, you have to use other supporting methods to keep the paper safe and intact,
or you can use metal to record every seed phrase, so it won't disappear or fade.

That is the most common and earliest option to do, if that method you think is good.
Store in an airtight place such as Time Capsule which is made of stainless metal and can withstand any condition when stored anywhere.

Randomly storing it in the notes you have will also not provide the best security.
If the note is read or owned by someone else, then they can read it and when that person is also a crypto user, then solving the phrase is easy to do.

For modern backup tools, seed phrases are now available in quite a lot of types, you just need to choose which one is best in your opinion.
Like using Cryptosteel, Blockstream or printing your own seed phrase on metal using Blockmit.

Check out this list of Seed Backup Solutions, you can compare which ones are the best.

Storing the seed phrase in an email is not a good idea, even if it is divided into several parts. Email or the cloud are places where a hacker can have access, if he finds at least one part of the seed phrase, he will understand that somewhere you store the remaining parts and perhaps they are stored in similar places. In any case, this is not the most reliable storage method. It’s better to write down the seed phrase on paper and hide it in different places, but it would also be nice to write it in such a way that only you know how it is encrypted, another additional level of protection never hurts.

I saved it offline, and also keep it secret physically using morse code so it wouldn't be obvious just in case someone I know here in my house see it accidentally.

Casually writing it word for word in a notebook will make it more dangerous if you misplaced it and someone saw it and tried to log in using your seed phrase. You just have to be extra careful and never forget how you will hide your seed phrase from everyone, except to yourself. Like what others said already, storing it online would be the worst idea ever.

After reading all the answers and topics that suggest ways to store seed phrases, you can’t help but be surprised by human imagination. The thought comes that those who write about incredible and quite complex methods are either very passionate people about inventing, or maybe they are so rich that the search for unique solutions is indeed fair.
Nevertheless, everything needs to be considered based on a person’s activities, his social circle, and so on. If you are a fairly public person, then storing your seed phrase, of course, requires great care. But if you are an ordinary person who does not disseminate information about yourself, then a phrase engraved on steel or even several paper archives (of course, taking into account the possibility of a fire) will be the most natural and logical choice.

Everything that is related to the internet could get hacked. No matter how securely you keep it, it never becomes immune to hacking. If the right person chooses to, then he can hack it for sure. This is why it is always recommended to keep your seed phrase offline. May not be a fault from the platform's side, it could get hacked for your irresponsible behaviour.

OP, here's a post I wrote 3 days ago. I am quoting myself here. Give it a try if you think this is interesting. And if anyone here can check the strength of this method please try it out and let me know. It will be really helpful. I don't have the tools to do it.

You've got the wrong idea mate. You don't just put your seed phrase directly on a piece of paper or whatever you are using in order to store your seed. You use some kind of encryption before you do it. Here's an interesting method I have come up with. There are 12 or 24 words in a seed phrase based on which one you choose. Now you can divide them into 3 or 4 parts. That being 1 2 & 3 or 1 2 3 & 4. In each of those groups, you put the same amount of words (this is for a 12-word seed phrase). Each group can have 3 or 4 words based on your choosing. Then you can randomize them to get a number. For example, it could be 3412. Now you put as many random words as you want between each number. But the number of new random words should be the same. For example, if you want to put 4 words before the number 3 in the group of 3412, the number of new words after 3 4 1 and 2 should be 4 words as well.

like this RW= Random Words.
RW RW RW RW 3 (contains the actual seed) RW RW RW RW 4 (contains the actual seed) RW............................RW [it goes like this until you have a full list of random words.]

Then you can make as many copies as you want and trust me, it is gonna take months for hackers to crack this.  (if they get a hold of your word list in the first place.)

All you need is the word list, the amount of random words you put in between and the actual number after randomization. For Example 3412.
You first make sure even if someone gets their hands on the seed, they won't be able to crack it. Then you make backups. That's how I do it. [Not exactly the same method but something else that I am not going to disclose publicly.]
But yeah. Having multiple seeds in one backup is not an issue if you are able to encrypt it. ALso, you can add some dummy accounts in there as well. You know the formula so you can check all the accounts, but for hackers, it will be a nightmare.

Stored my wallet seed phrase in two places offline and online. I save my seed phrase offline in notebook and online in google drive. But I have carefully kept my notebook in a safe place where no one can find it. Although many people may argue about my keeping this seed phrase, I think I have kept it very safe. A seed phrase can be stored in many ways, but it is best to keep it as safe as possible.
i was also stored my a lot of information (about different wallet seed phrase and other many important things) on google drive but after few years now i removed from online, but i lost many things for suddenly disabled my gmail account, now stored all of important things in offline, it's more safe than online.

Op what you said is one of the way to secure a seed phrase but there other ways you can also use to secure your seed phrase. You can use these to secure your seed phrase Coinplate Steel Seed Phrase Saver (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5404433.0) and Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5389446.0) and I believed of you use any of the above mentioned devices to secure your seed phrase it will be more secure than writing it down it two different places but if you don't have money to buy those washers and steels then you can go for a local way of keeping the seed phrase save. According to experts, it is not too good to secure your seed phrase online either in emails, cloud or Googledrive but it is better you save it offline. Though all have risk but offline is more secure than online.

I think, The best way to store your seed phrase is you personal diary. Write these seed phase carefully in your diary And keep your diary in the locker. And when you need to log in your account, then see seed phase from your diary and write them in the account. This way, it will be protected from hackers and other digital approaches.
Another safe way to do this is to use a hardware wallet. Connect the hardware wallet to the USB when you need to log in to your account. And after use take it down and store it in your locker.

Saving your phrase in a bank is really not a safe option adding to the fact that you are given another company to handle your security for you which most of the case you might go and request for it which their is no security guarantee of it that anything might not happen to it in aspect of the bank being rubbed and all of that.

Then again splitting it into two is also an increase security measure which can serve as if one is being found in the other bank and the rest of the phrase can’t be accessed since they don’t have the complete one, is a good option but where ruin everything again is in the aspect where you suggest we add the phrase in a cloud even if it’s password protected it’s not safe at all anything online can be hacked and cracked it has been happening to cloud storage this period is it’s not a good option.

There are no perfect options. To me, the options that rely heavily on banks, and multiple banks, no less, are risky because there can be a robbery, bankruptcy, destruction of property due to a natural disaster etc. If the seed phrase also remains at home, what's the point of it being in the banks? A physical copy at home might be accidentally found by someone else. The second option has a seed phrase entered into a password manager, which sounds really unsafe to me.
I believe that apart from the risk of being hacked, a person should also consider the risk of locking oneself out of the wallet because of the complications of storing the seed phrase.

This depends on each person, I personally prefer to keep it in the form of paper that I write on myself and I also print it on an iron plate and then keep it in my wallet. The point is, I don't want to save it in soft file form because there is the potential for hacking or leaking.

That's true storing seed phrases on soft file there is always a potential risk for hacking or leaking. So now if we consider these aspects, the seed phrase in the soft file is very risky.  But in many cases we use the soft file despite the risk because it can be used anytime from anywhere in the world. However, keeping the seed phrases backup in the hard copy and maintaining it properly will be the best option.  My suggestion would be to have multiple recovery sources for seed phrases for recovery.

The people that say storing your seed broken in 2 parts and doing 2 copies of it and thus in 4 different bank safe deposit boxes is bad, explain how that is bad?  The thing is if something happens to your seed phrase in one of these safe deposit boxes, you still have 1 copy of the other half of the seed in another safe deposit box.  Now if something was to happen like a natural disaster, well you would be notified of this issue correct or know about it?  But the thing is if your other 3 banks where the safe deposit boxes are is close to that bank, that is another issue.

The other thing is say the government or IRS were to seize your safe deposit boxes which I heard does happen but that is if you owe money to the IRS.  Well if you have a passphrase which would be on say a password manager on a usb flash drive and on the cloud, well they would also need that as well.  Since having the seed phrase without the passphrase doesn't do anything.  You also keep a copy of your seed phrase in your apartment whether it's in 1 piece or 2 pieces.  The thing is you make sure you don't have your passphrase written on paper.

So you could have your passphrase in a password manager and that could be in say 2 usb flash drives and say you gave 1 of the usb flash drives to someone you know and trust.  You keep 1 in your apartment.  You also have the password manager saved to the cloud.  So whether the governement or IRS or even bank employee got access to your safe deposit boxes, they still need the passphrase.  The person you trust who you give the usb flash drive to... well first off they need the password to the usb flash drive.  Even if you didn't put a usb flash drive password, they have to know what your password manager is.  Now obviously if they got that and got access to your apartment, then they would be able to access your crypto but they have to figure out your password are in the usb flash drive.  So there could be 1 or 2 passwords for them to crack.  Now if the government searched your home and got your usb flash drive, they still have to crack the password for the usb flash drive... which I assume they could do easily right?  However, how are they going to crack the code to your password manager password to access your passphrase if your passphrase is something like m1fsoadfldsajfdasfnbfjsajfjpdsf029390213fnsakjhjlwooa.  They certainly aren't going to crack that right?  But this is assuming you have a problem with the IRS or whatever which most people do not have that problem.  Now they can access your cloud email and probably crack your google drive password right if they wanted to?  What if it's a ridiculous password like above?  Now even if they get in, what about your long password manager password?  Unless it's something really silly where brute forcing can get into it, wouldn't the safe deposit boxes and passphrase be the ideal method?  I remember it was said the Winkletwins have their seed phrases in different safe deposit boxes across different continents if not mistaken?

The best way to store your seed phrase is detailed in the article by fillippone, Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5389446.0). He doesn't just tell you the best way, he goes further to show you how to do it. Using washers, very durable, fire and water resistant, and also to other elements.
the article has giving a detailed insight to this matter but from the two options you provided, they are all good but I consider them too complex and for me, what I do is that I wrote down the seed phrase, copied it into three papers and kept each of the piece in my safety box at three different location I visited regularly that way, whener I need it I I'm only close to it and can easily access it. Let me add that the first time I wrote out my passphrase, I kept it carelessly at home because I felt no was knew about it importance but after I almost lost it, I learnt my lesson.

There is a lot of risk in the internet space , and I think bitcoin investors are aware of that . It's just that some people deliberately ignore it and choose online storage because it also has certain benefits .
It is true that in online space scammers are constantly trying to steal other people's assets. For those reasons online space is always risky. A Bitcoin investors storage can certainly suffer if they do not properly store their seed phrases.

Many people save seed phrase in online for security but I think it is not safe for everyone to save in online. Especially those who are vulnerable in terms of security. I think it's worth making a few copies of the seed phrases and saving them on paper. Offline storage is safe  but putting the phrase in multiple places can provide more security. Those who put their seed phrase in email can be really risky.

It is estimated between 4 to 6 million bitcoins have been lost forever because people lost the physical copy of their seed phrase. So I don't agree that storing offline is necessarily safer, at least not for me.

Storing online can be a safer option depending on how you do it, also depending on your specific needs and situation and technical ability.
For example billions of people use password managers to store extremely sensitive password information which are rarely if ever hacked.

With that kind of track record that tells me password managers are generally pretty safe. But some are better than others,
Do your own research but in general I would only use password managers that are fully open source and reputable.

Always make sure you use bitcoin's hidden wallet or passphrase feature (always stored separately from your seedphrase) so in the event someone ever gets a hold of your seedphrase
it will be useless to them without knowing the passphrase.  You can even have both a physical copy and online backup of your seed phrase.

You should know that any online application is risky option to store your private key since there are great minded hackers could penetrate that also we don't know if the owner of the platform will perform that hacking without us or any other people knowing.

Also any offline places should be fine so make sure you have full control on the environment where you store your seed phrase so that you can avoid to lose it.

But also remember that its really up to the user on how they can make their seed phrase safe and if they are aware on all risk then for sure they can avoid any methods or risk which is known or used by hackers.

It may vary in location. one can keep it in a pen drive, one can keep it in his pc or smartphone, and one can write it in a diary. But the whole purpose is to store it safely because if we don't have the wallet key, there will be no wallet and no bitcoins.  So a non-custodial wallet should be used to keep bitcoins safe and the wallet should be kept private.  I use 2 methods one is to write in diary other way is to keep in pen drive. So op you can use method according to your convenience

The best way to store your seed phrase is offline. Aside that online would be regarded unsafe no matter how careful you claim to be.when it comes to offline storage there is actually no best way because the best way is that which you can store it offline without a third party knowing about it.This is because every individual has his special way of storing their seed phrases offline.
so writing on papers or engraving on stone and many others doesn't really matter so long the seed is as safe as possible.

I've looked over what you said several times, and I think you're right. While many people will think that storing your seed phrase online is the best option because that's what they can do, I think that storing it offline is the best option as well. Online stores are never safe, even if they aren't careless. Someone will eventually be able to access your online store, which includes Gmail and this entire store. The only point that someone could make against my online store is that, in order to keep it secure, you should prevent people from accessing your phone or computer or from clicking on any links that you receive from scammers.

Getting a paper and writing down your seed phrase is the best option because you can even give people your phone and, no matter how cunning they are, they won't be able to locate it. Additionally, if you write down your seed phrase on a paper, you won't have to worry about someone possibly finding it if your phone gets lost, stolen, or ruined; you can simply use the seed phrase to retrieve your wallet and carry on without damaging anything.

You should know that any online application is risky option to store your private key since there are great minded hackers could penetrate that also we don't know if the owner of the platform will perform that hacking without us or any other people knowing.

This is so true, I once encountered who can actually steal whatever info you have on your computer by just letting them control your PC via Team Viewer or any of such Apps. others are just newbies without any thought of their securities being breached easily by these hackers and they just give them access just for the sake of doubling their bitcoins which is not true. Many other factors lead to this kind of trap including the holders not having enough knowledge on how to secure their seed phrases and ending up getting hacked easily. Sometimes, they are the one who gives the hackers access to it and only know that they were fooled when they see they have been talking to the scammers all this time.

The two storage places you mentioned are very safe and we must be able to guarantee that the place where we store the two wallet keys cannot be accessed by other people and I prefer to record the wallet keys and store them in a place that is not easily known by other people and will Tell family that we can trust because if something happens to us and no one knows the key to the wallet, of course the assets we have are completely useless after we have collected them with great difficulty and cannot be used by anyone.

There is no fail-proof method to store your coins as every single one of them has inconveniences, however storing your coins online seems like a terrible idea to me, and there is a lot of evidence of this being true as the amount of fiat stolen by hackers is enormous, so any form of online storage seems inherently risky.

Now is it true that keeping an offline copy also presents risks? Yes, but compared to the online threats in which a hacker at the other side of the world could get your coins, obtaining a physical copy of your coins requires access to the place where you store them, something way easier to monitor and control.

Just make sure that your Diary will always be safe mate because I'm afraid that someone
may come your room and get into your diary(for some other reason and sadly will find your phrase)

i also have a written copy but not in my Diary , yet will not tell it here for my own safety.

Just to add to what you have already said, each of the seed phrase etched on the steel should also be numbered according in it sequence order as it appeared while creating your wallet so as to avoid mix-up and the difficulty of accounting for each orderly in the future. Another importance of the numbering, peradventure, of a sudden death by accident it makes it easy for a posterity you trust the secret to to be able to identify each phrase in the number they fall without fail.

*Steel plates are durable, more like everlasting with an anti-rusting property making it to last for even a thousand years.
*The etching can't also be wiped off by fire in the case of an arson or any domestic related fire engulfing the storage location, unlike when one may use other means of storage i.e offline paper.

I guess you never know in what kind of circumstances you will possibly need access to your seed phrase, so maybe an online option and a couple of offline options are in order.

1) Online: of course it should not be ebvious that it is a seed phrase and on the other hand it should be simple enough so that you know yourself what the words and the order are.

Maybe as a example:  Set up a website with a couple of pics and enter the seed phrase in single words in the EXIF Data for example.  If you keep your mouth shut that this webpage even exist, this should be quite safe...

2) Offline: You should always consider that you maybe have an accident and have to stay in a hospital for some time, if you are not lucky some one cleans up the house and throws your secret passphrase in the trash or so.

Maybe you should additionally simply write a will and add a closed envelope with your passphrase and deposit it with a lawyer at a courthouse or so, this also makes sure in case you die early the  Bitcoins are not lost....

Just my thoughts about this :)

Hi. This is not a very good option.
Bitcoin seed phrases should never be online. That's a must.
Specifically for the approach you mention though:
1. the website will be stored in a server.
    (a) if it's a local server, it needs to be backed-up properly, otherwise if the disk fails, the website is gone and the bitcoin as well.
    (b) if it's a remote server, then you need to trust the owner of the server.
    (c) if it's a cloud server, then the company that provides the service will know everything about the website and of course problem (b) arises again.
2. there are websites like https://www.exifdata.com/ that will easily allow the hacker to get the seed phrase from the images.
3. there are website scrapers that search for websites and download all their contents.

Finally, the following approach is really super easy and people should just follow the easy paths:
1. generate a seed phrase in an airgapped device.
2. write it down in a piece of paper twice.
3. store the backups in 2 separate locations.
4. check them up twice a year.

A stupid idea like this coming from a hero member on this forum is a big shame, how did you become a hero member without knowing that it's wrong to keep or store your recovery seed online? Even if you are using a hardware wallet, if you keep it's seed in any form of online storage, either email or cloud then you are not safe.

This is crazy and stupid, newbies are looking up to high ranking members on this forum, believing that they have passed through a lot and always know better, it's disappointing that this nonsense is coming from a hero member, wtf?

Any recovery seed or private key must stay offline, there is no better way to keep your keys safe than using offline mode, this is why airgapped wallet are the most secured, they lack the need for internet, they are always offline, may God have mercy on your soul.

I think we're just talking about how and where to safely store seed phrases. Whether we share the seed phrase or seek to pass it on to family members is another story.

There are people who never trust anyone, whether it's their wife or their parents. For them, they would rather let those bitcoins disappear than share them with others. But there are others who are willing to share with those closest to them because whether it's bitcoin, gold or diamonds, everything we do is for family. So sharing with them is necessary.

Personally, I keep my seed phrases in a safe place, but my mom is also the one who knows where I keep them. Because I don't want my efforts to go down the drain while my relatives have to suffer poverty if something happens to me.

Do you know that website can shutdown and it can be hacked by hackers, and one thing about hackers they try to hack everything even if they are not sure about the information you have in your website,  they just want to get in their to see if their is any valuable information that will benefit them. Online is not the best place to store seedphrase because anything can happen and their is no guarantee that is that very safe the way you think. One of the reasons online is not safe to store seedphrase is because you can just control what will happen at anytime.

But when seed phrase are store offline you can decide to store and secure it in the best way that nobody can have access to except you. We are all visitors in the internet, anything can happen that can make not to have access to the account any more. The offline,  specially written note is the best place to store seed phrase because with this you can give the best security to the seed phrase just to make sure the seed phrase is safe just make your bitcoin safe.

Yes, but I think he correctly points out that any storage method that relies solely on your own memory is not good. Mixing up the seed phrase words is definitely bad practice and a common reason people lose their crypto.

Seed phrases already have an additional layer of security – a passphrase you can store separately. I don't understand why people wouldn't use it!

There's nothing brilliant about the idea. When it comes to seed phrase complexity should be avoided at all cost. Going the extra mile to interchange the words is not good because he could mess things up and might not be able to remember the correct words combination again. Instead of subscribing to the above seemingly brilliant idea, I'd rather split the seed phrase into two and keep them in separate locations. Though, this is not how I stored mine.

The best way to store your seed fresh is to make sure document it by writing it down in a paper and save it to particular document as you're file we are nobody can access it so that is the possible way someone can send or store it seed phrase some people who serve their seat face online are those people that complain that someone has penetrate into their wallet so it is good to write out your seat phrase on the paper and the store it will have someone cannot see it so that in future it will not experience lost of your coin in your wallet even seven in your email is also improper because you can lost your laptop or your system and someone can easily access your email

Well, you can also use ELLIPAL mnemonic device too... 88g of metal and pocket fitting, you can check it up for more details. It's also fire, water and mold proof.
And yes if you're using paper, it should be laminated and put in safes at different locations far from each other and duplicated in case of any situations. If you're splitting the seed into parts. Remember the sequence.
However, do not take screenshots of your seed phrase. Do not type it on nom default keyboards,
Do not save it to Google drive or any cloud storage, I'm telling you.
Try the advanced phrase feature on Trezor wallet if you want.
Not every wallet itself is safe.

So the wallet will only be decrypted when someone you inherit it from knows these two different places? Doesn't this also sound strange because dividing 50% of the share elsewhere actually increases the risk of you losing that share?

As long as the way we store it is not too conspicuous, and it is safe from theft, I call it a good storage technique. Writing it on paper is no problem, but lately I've been interested in writing it on a steel plate and storing it in my family's hidden safe.

1 safe with the highest security in the family. Living outside like ordinary people, but huge treasures are stored in the safe.

My prerequisites for SEED storage:

  • Materials to store: both waterproof and fireproof stuff.
  • Places to store: waterproof, fireproof, easy to access, control-accessed, not cloud based.
  • Encryption (if any): free of any own-developed scheme, like SEED phrase spiting, characters replacement/substitute etc.

However you keep your seed phrase you should definitely have two copies hidden in different places imo. If on paper laminate or at least use some clear packing tape to cover the paper. If dividing into parts then should probably have 4 different hiding spots.

Here's a video from Andreas Antonopoulos (anybody still remembers him?) from 3 years ago, in which he strongly advise against splitting seed phrases:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5nSibpfHYE

A lot of people disagrees with him in the comments though and I also find his argumentation and logic lacking. So take it for what its worth.
If his general message is that there are better and more secure ways of storing seeds - that's fine. But I don't understand how storing full phrase in 3 different locations is considered more secure than splitting it. It just makes no sense.

I think the best is to save it in a diary which only you have access to read and write things, after you might have raped it with waterproof and also copy it down in another place that can't be exposed to danger  of loss or being seen by some one else.

I feel like it's one from many dumb ways to back your seed phrase.

Let's say this is your seed phrase:

1. abandon
2. ability
3. able
4. about
5. above
6. absent
7. absorb
8. abstract
9. absurd
10. abuse
11. access
12. accident

So it will be:

1. 4b4nd0n
2. 4b1l1tY
3. 4bl3
(Tattooed on your dick)

4. 4b0ut
5. 4b0v3
6. 4bs3nT
(Tattooed on your ass)

7. 4bs0rb
8. 4bstrAct
9. 4bsurd
(Tattooed on your head)

10. 4bus3
11. 4cc3ss
12. 4cc1d3nt
(Tattooed on your cheek)?

In case someone aware with those words because you intentional or unintentional reveal it, you would be targeted. You need to protect your privacy because this is really sensitive.

Offline seed phrase storage is most secure. The seed phrase is the only key with which we can protect our relationship and keeping this key properly safe is most important to us. So I think the sheed phrase whether it is 12 or 24 sentences, we should write these sentences in a diary and keep it in a locker or a drawer and keep the key of that locker or drawer with us at all times, it will be the safest. This is how I store the seed phrase of my wallet. It gives me maximum security.

When the tattooed body is exposed, you don't realize that there are people who are experts in the field of randomizing every letter, number and character that you have separated into several pieces. Don't you think so?

When storing seeds, I prefer to store them in a safe place that cannot easily catch fire and will not be lost due to getting wet in water, such as steel that has passed the test stage when burned and submerged.
If you keep a seed phrase in a tattoo on a part of your body, what if unexpectedly something happens that causes the tattoo to be erased, such as an injury from falling from a car or another incident that could injure the part of the body with the tattoo.

Seems a little complicated but for sure both are going to work anyway, but it is just going to be a hassle for sure people especially if you are just a newbie at this kind of thing.

The way I do it is to put it on a flash drive and then put the flash drive somewhere safe like for example a vault of something, then I have another copy of my seed phrase on a notebook which is also hidden somewhere safe to something like a vault as well. I mean not too flashy but I guess it is already secured, as long as you could put it somewhere safe you're still going to be okay, just need to avoid putting it online like clouds or something like that because I dont really believe that those are secured and online are always vulnerable to hacks to there is always the possibility to getting hacks. Unlike if you're going to put it offline, there is no possibility of getting hacks the only thing that you need to worry about is this, but I guess as long as you dont give too much information you're going to be safe, not everyone knows about Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, etc. so they wouldn't really go to be interested in it unless they know that you are holding some kind of wallet, so just make sure to do not give away too much information.

I plan to have a steel plate copy back in the day I guess I just forgot about it and didn't add it to my plans, would plan to do it as well since its a good thing to have in incase there was fire involved it still not gong to be a problem.

If not, why share this info in a public forum?

Offline seed phrase storage is most secure. The seed phrase is the only key with which we can protect our relationship and keeping this key properly safe is most important to us. So I think the sheed phrase whether it is 12 or 24 sentences, we should write these sentences in a diary and keep it in a locker or a drawer and keep the key of that locker or drawer with us at all times, it will be the safest. This is how I store the seed phrase of my wallet. It gives me maximum security.

That's not a very bright idea considering there can be natural disasters, what if there is a natural disaster where you survive but your house doesn't? What if microorganisms eat the paper up? What if it catches fire and gets burned completely? So we need to make sure that we keep our seed phrase and other important things safe from such stuff so that we don't lose access to our coins.
If you plan to keep your seed phrase physically somewhere, then you should make sure that you make copies of it and keep it in multiple places so that if one of them is wasted, you can still get your seed phrase from the other place.

Usually most of my friend store their seed phrase on google drive beside have save it before on computer or their mobile phone not, I don't bad ideas when storing seed phrase data on google drive but need to secure access with email account linked on several device how to protect with our mobile phone or some device broken. But storing seed phrase on flash drive give us more secure assets without think how bad possibility when losing access such as save it in google drive.
Need to spent some place for storing seed phrase and its good ideas after storing in flash drive, using mobile phone note until store in google drive for taking care if losses some access way.

1 safe with the highest security in the family. Living outside like ordinary people, but huge treasures are stored in the safe.
Are you sure that potential robber won't find the safe, and if he does, your bitcoin is gone.

I sure hope that you explained your friends how dangerous that method of saving is and that they are really testing their luck.

But storing seed phrase on flash drive give us more secure assets
That is also not a good way to store your seed phrase as every time you insert USB into a PC with (most likely) internet conenction, you are exposing it as I seriously doubt that many people have air gapped PC just for those ocassions.

The best way to store your seed phrases is the offline storage unit, you can write it down in the pieces of papers, about 3 places is okay for it and must be stored at a secured different places and mustn't be so suspicious hidden places that would attract persons to the location.
Online seed phrases storage is extremely risky because because either your device or storage sites can be compromised and get your privacies exposed.
We have since been talking about keeping our seed phrases private with a high secretiveness but we have never considered the case of "What if"? Wallets banking for assets storage and transactions aren't like the fiats banking where we've next of kins, anything can happen and anything emergency is possible to happen so I'm on the note to say we should sometimes have a trustee, a guaranteed individual who we can entrust out seed phrases to Incase of emergency or critical occurances. Although you don't have to force into someone to trust if you can't find one.
And while you make copies of your seed phrases, be careful so that you don't make multiple copies you may not have knowledge about the location again probably due to excessive locations of hideouts and don't be relaxed with just a copy because anything can happen within in vicinity that you may not be reachable to it again.
I also have to tell us to always check on the locations we hide those copies and don't feel relaxed when you can't find a copy of it from where it was hidden.
If nothing has happened to your wallet yet at then don't hesitate to take security actions to maintain your privacies.

I store seed phrase in my tattoo. Here is my way
1. I split seed phrase to several part
2. After split, I replace my favourite character or number with other character/symbol
3. I draw several tattoo with splitted seed. So if i have 4 splitted seed so I make 4 tattoo.
I feel like it's one from many dumb ways to back your seed phrase.

Let's say this is your seed phrase:

1. abandon
2. ability
3. able
4. about
5. above
6. absent
7. absorb
8. abstract
9. absurd
10. abuse
11. access
12. accident

So it will be:

1. 4b4nd0n
2. 4b1l1tY
3. 4bl3
(Tattooed on your dick)

4. 4b0ut
5. 4b0v3
6. 4bs3nT
(Tattooed on your ass)

7. 4bs0rb
8. 4bstrAct
9. 4bsurd
(Tattooed on your head)

10. 4bus3
11. 4cc3ss
12. 4cc1d3nt
(Tattooed on your cheek)?

In case someone aware with those words because you intentional or unintentional reveal it, you would be targeted. You need to protect your privacy because this is really sensitive.
Some pattern of saving the seedphrase needs to be personal, you don't need bring it to the public.  The best way for storage of seedphrase should be offline in a pattern that needs not to be reviewed to anyone. The seedphrase is private and everything about it needs to be private,  no need to reveal it to someone else the pattern of our you store your seedphrase, you may be thinking you are helping someone but the truth is that you are exposing your self.

Haha, the position almost same with your description. But I forgot to write above that No 4, I encrypt using simple Caesar method and also I remove some char too.

However I knew that this method not really effective and not recommended.

So the wallet will only be decrypted when someone you inherit it from knows these two different places? Doesn't this also sound strange because dividing 50% of the share elsewhere actually increases the risk of you losing that share?
I didn't mention encryption in my earlier post. I only said splitting the seed phrase into two and storing in separate locations is far better than interchanging the seed positions, as one can suffer amnesia and forget the correct seed arrangement. I also went further to say that I don't support both methods by my concluding statement.

I store seed phrase in my tattoo. Here is my way

This is quite hilarious but it's still not safe. If the artist has crypto knowledge he can steal your funds.

Safely storing your seed phrase is a different thing from keeping your privacy. For security, you should store your seed phrase offline and make more than one backup of it, you must also have great opsec and ensure you use an airgapped wallet or a hardware wallet to store your funds. However, for better privacy you must run your own node and don't just connect to third party servers that can see your BTC addresses and ip addresses, you must also use p2p exchanges and self custodial wallets only.

What if the bank catches fire or your document gets missing? Maybe you can sue them but to store your phrase, you should try avoiding it relying on other people. You can turn it into a cypher and save it offline but not in a complex place so even if someone found it, they wouldn’t be able to make sense out of it. It could even be an article and you used the words in there but only you know how to decipher the words.

Firstly, I wouldn't over complicate your setup. For e.g mix your words, split the seed etc - you'll only confuse yourself later.

Second. There's lots of people talking about multi-sig - I'm not a fan of this. I'd prefer to add a 25th word, so if your seed is ever stolen/compromised, they still need one more piece of the puzzle to spend your coins. I think most of the hardware wallets support this feature.

As for storage, I'd engrave a copy of it on a metal backup (one that has been properly tested to withstand a house fire). I'd hide in plain sight or somewhere totally random, not in a safe.

Lastly the way the world is headed, you need to be resilient and ready for anything. I'd remember your words as a story. 12 words is going to be easier for this. 24 is not hard though. No matter what happens you have your coins stored in your brain.

Storing your seed online anywhere is just plain retarted.

In my view it depends on your requirements. Lets say I have 100 000 USD in Bitcoin. There are different considerations:

1)Safety:   Keep the seed phrase save. If you save the seed phrase in a physical space, like on paper, metal or whatever, everybody needs to be physically present to steal this information.

If you store the info online it can be hacked via the internet, I agree here. So online is less save.......

2) Access: But what happens if you travel to a foreighn country and get arrested and need access to your Bitcoin funds to pay for a good lawyer????  How does it help that you have the seed phrase hidden at home???

Maybe worth to have set up an online option to access your seed phrase, at least then you have a chance to use your Bitcoins .....

For me money is a tool, and if I cannot use it it is useless for me......

But if other prefer to rot in jail and it makes them happy that their Bitcoins are save :

 Up to you :)

I personally wrote mine in a piece of paper and then keep it in a safe place. I also mixed those 24 words that only me knows the exact combination. I am actually planning to acquire a gun safe and I'll put it there though not right now but maybe soon when I have extra money.
wow that is even best way to keep them safe mixing your 24 words phrase , but my question now mate is what if one day you have come to sickness in which you cannot remember anything , who will inherit your funds knowing that you are the only one that knows the right combinations?
sorry for asking this mate because I'm just concern bout your hard earned crypto that might be gone in the air if that happens.
I think we're just talking about how and where to safely store seed phrases. Whether we share the seed phrase or seek to pass it on to family members is another story.

Every method has advantages and disadvantages, no method is 100% perfect and depending on each person, there will be a method that suits them. We cannot impose our thoughts on others or think others are stupid when they do not think the same as us. I've seen some people mixing up phrases to increase security. For me it was quite risky and not suitable for me but so far they have been safe with that method, how can they say they were wrong? On the contrary, when I told them my method, they said it was not safe for them. So what is right and what is wrong?

I'd never trust them my seed phrase. It's a crazy idea that you'd allow them to keep your seed phrase which you should be the one responsible for keeping it.

There are a lot of complex ideas that are in here suggested by many members. Might just try them than relying on the bank or any third party service for keeping important documents such as your seed phrase which is your life saving.

The adding of the 25th word makes a lot of sense. I am not completely sure how it works yet but I looked it up and from what I learnt, you will be able to add a passphrase and it could be anything. It could consist of numbers, uppercase, etc. with this you really don’t have to over complicate the storing of your phrases. I once encountered an issue where I was locked out of my own device just because I used a lock that I can’t remember with as much as 70 tries. You make a point indeed.

Absolutely agree. Everyone needs to find his own way to store the seed phrase. There are many ways. I recommend the following (must not mean I do it):
- If you are good in memorizing things, then learn your 12 or 24 words. This is easier then you thing. Repeat this over days and weeks until you can get the seed in your sleep. Similar to a poem or prayer that you have learned once and can do for your whole life.
- For extra security (in case a rock hits your head), engrave the seed into a metal plate and hide, bury or store it in a safe place. The metal plate should be safe against water, fire and other influences.

I do find on memorizing those seed phrases is something that i wont really be doing or considering on such option. Well, there are people who are really that good in memorizing but this is something that im not really that confident on doing so because several factors could really affect it out and one missing word would really be meaning to say goodbye into your coins. I would rather consider that metal plate on which this is something
that i have done on 5 years 8 years already and i dont have any problems which it is unlike when you do store up those phrases on a blank paper or putting it on a flash drive.

The main points that you should really be in concern is that you shouldnt really be storing it on cloud on where those places could be potentially be hacked or exploit.
Even myself cant be able to trust those hardware wallets too.

Do not divide your seed into 2 or 3 parts, this can complicate the recovery process, in addition to losing one of the parts, depending on the length of the seed, for example, 12 words, dividing it into 2 parts containing 6 words each is at risk of brute force. If you're going to do this, if you're going to do this, better use shamir backup (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5174689.msg52135417#msg52135417).

The best way to store your backups is on paper, writing down several copies and keeping them at your mother's house, at your workplace, at a relative's house, etc. And also add passphrase so that no one who has access to your seed can access the funds.

The passphrase must be written away/separate from the seed (no one should know that the passphrase is obvious), in addition, you must ensure that you will never lose your seed + passphrase, so don't be careless.

We should use and combine 1 to 2 methods together. I also don't think memorizing seed phrases works for me, but people with good memories can try this. It wasn't too bad and he also mentioned the backup solution of using metal plates for storage, so in case our memory fails, we obviously still have a backup plan.

And I agree with you, we can use any method but we should also stay away from the idea of storing seed phrases using online storage services or saving them in emails. Online storage has much greater risks than offline storage.

You can probably use dog tags or any metal where you can do an inscriptions, that way you can store it safely and you don't really have to spend a lot of money just to store your seed phrase, you would probably still have that even when you're old since, maybe putting some form of cover like a rubber to conceal the contents of that dog tag. Plus you can wear it on your person so you know that you won't lose it or just store it somewhere easily accessible to you. Also, don't divide your seed phrase into two parts, that's got to be some spy stuff that you're doing because it's only recommended if you've got like a huge amount of bitcoin in there like numbering in thousands or hundreds of thousands or maybe when that wallet stores the bitcoin of multiple family members but otherwise, don't do this because you're going to complicate things for yourself.

Now is it true that keeping an offline copy also presents risks? Yes, but compared to the online threats in which a hacker at the other side of the world could get your coins, obtaining a physical copy of your coins requires access to the place where you store them, something way easier to monitor and control.

Do you use a password manager to store your password information such as your email password, bank account passwords, Paypal account, Amazon account, etc?
If yes then why would you think that storing such sensitive information online is unsafe? Probably 99% of people who use the internet on a regular basis also use a password manager.

If password managers are so unsafe then why do billions of people in the world use them everyday to store their highly sensitive password information online without any issues?
Most password managers allow you to store notes securely, which is how it is possible to store a seedphrase online.

I think the fear of storing stuff  online is a bit overexagerated. Of course some methods of online storage are safer than others, and some password managers are better than others
so you have to be careful how you do it. If someone doesn't feel comfortable storing it online then just don't do it. And if you do want to store it online it then do your research so it can be done as safely and securely as possible. It's called freedom of choice.

Considering the incredibly strong safety record of password managers in general, IMO the average person has a greater chance of losing the physical copy of their seedphrase then having it compromised from an online hacker. So it may be good idea in some cases to have both a physical and online backup of your seedphrase.

I would say that it would not be ok to store it in your PC neither. This is why I have a notepad with all of my sensitive information. From websites and emails/passwords I use on them, to seedphrases, to basically everything I need to remember. When I change password at any given place, I just scratch over it with pencil, and write in a new place. I do not do too much stuff with it neither, usually it's already connected, but it's good to have it there, just in case.

I don't even do like alphabetically or anything, just write it to the next line and be over with it. This allows me to have a piece of notebook that carries all my information, can't be hacked there. They can I am sure still hack me somehow, like keylogger or something, but also being poor is a great another reason for not getting hacked lol.

I think it was mostly the beginners who does this and you don't look like one of them according to your forum rank. This is because paper can get damaged easily and then even if you keep it on a safe place, its writing can still fade away over time according to what I have observed. A better way to store a seed phrase is when you write them in stain-less steel. It may take time but it's worth it especially if you have lots of Bitcoins. There is also a company who sells those steel letters along with a capsule-like storage for use with our seed phrases. I think that works good too. Lastly, hardware wallets should not be forgotten as a safe location on securing our keys/BTC.

The most common way of storing your Seedphrase; Seedphrase are being documented and kept in several safe places, in other for proper storage for future purposes offline , no matter how you store your Seed phrase,it should be kept away from thieves and others and it should be laminated but there are other ways also such as engraving or stamping on metal, chiselling into a stone tablet or inventing and creating . Also in storing you have to use Keystone Tablet plus, phones Coinplate Alpha, Crypto steel Cassette,USB or hard drive, e.t.c.

In other for you to protect your seed phrase in crypto ,you have to highly back it up by permanently writing the words to things that cannot be destroyed like stainless steel or metal plate.

If you make your back up and recovery process more complicated, you put you in more dangerous risk of failure in your wallet recovery later. The point is to keep your backup safely against physical damage like water, fire, acid, shock and secretly from human attacks offline and online.

Don't complicate the process because if you lose access to one of step for wallet recovery, you lose your bitcoin.

I personally think that splitting your seed phrases in multiple parts would just lead to worse things. What happens if you lose one part?

I still think that having my seed phrase all together in one hidden place is the way to go. Don't overcomplicate things because most likely you are going to forget it at some point. I usually put it somewhere common for me but no one else really checks

You're absolutely right splitting of seed phrase in multiple parts sometimes you might lose one part, I think is advisable to have the seed phrase all joined together in a hidden place, so as to avoid losing your seed phrase however,I don't split my seed phrase rather i put it in a very hidden place.

It's not advisable to split a seedphrase into two parts or more, if you want to have a protected backup, it's safer and more reliable to extend these words (passphrase) where the seedphrase is something you have and the passphrase is something you know.

I also prefer to put all the seed phrases together in one place that I use often and remember without others knowing, because it's much easier for me even though it's not a very common place. However, as long as I still consider that place to be a very safe place to store the seed phrase, I will continue to guard it well without forgetting it at any time. Because the good things that I have saved are not things that I will forget as long as I am still alive and still working like now.

In terms of storing seed phrases, they must be placed in a safe place and hidden from other people after we have written them down very well. Because I also don't think that the method of separating it into several parts is a good method so I still use the method that is easiest for me in order to be able to maintain it very well and not be too complicated when I want to check it again at a certain time.

Losing your private key or seed phrase is a very scary thing, so you really need to plan efficiently to avoid the unexpected. And you can make multiple backups of your seed phrases, storing them in separate secure locations in several places, and it's also important to consider using a safe. And you can also engrave your seed phrase on a steel plate and keep it in a very safe place that only you know about, and there are many ways to keep it safe depending on you which one is best.
And also never save your seed phrase on a computer or device connected to the internet or technology because it has the potential to be hacked, stolen and so on.

Keeping the private key well is of course a very important thing for those who invest in Bitcoin, because if we cannot keep the private key well, of course we will no longer be able to access the assets that have been collected, of course this will be very sad for us and choose To store it in several places, of course this would be better because if we forget about it, there are still other places where we can store the private key. It would be better if we didn't store it on a computer if we couldn't guarantee the security of the computer we use to store the key. private key and it would be better for us to keep it so that we can guarantee the security of the private key that we have.

I just do it simply: I will take a picture on my cell phone, and besides that, I will also write it down, list it in the notepad, and then transfer it to my flash drive. When I am done, I will delete the one in the notepad, maybe later, because it will harm the desk and cause hackers.

So you should not put seed phrases in your documents on your desktop so that hackers can't see anything on your desktop. but as long as you can buy a hardware wallet.

In recent time we have too many things about this all but still many are fearing to lose this which is creating problems because I personally lost one word, and now it's nearly 4 years I fail to recover my all bitcoins which are still into my account with blockchain.com and I am having pain as well because this is big amount and still I am not able to come out of this all, so the best way is just tried to save this offline and also try to read about @fillippone he is doing good work for the newbies and members which are feeling not good and always need to be settle things with better safety hopefully things like these will be helpful for many others, and we will not face problems in the future.

For now I think there is no best way for us to store our seed phrase because any option we think of would always have a disadvantage that is why we should keep it or save it anywhere we believe could be okay for us. Even if you write it in a sheet if paper or metal plate, there is still possibility that water could soak it and it will get washed away if it accidentally enters water.
In the other way round, if the hiuse get burn, we would not have access to it because it could meakt due to the fire heat.

Every method has advantages and disadvantages, no method is 100% perfect and depending on each person, there will be a method that suits them.

True that all methods might have their advantages and disadvantages but they should still be offline because anything connected to the internet is open to hacking and it is more risky than keeping it offline. we know we are all trying to play it smart and soft by keeping it online it is dangerous, and if it is about playing it smart then you can get a flash and save it there with a password you can remember there ways to keep it safe.

But if anyone is looking for ways to store it better some consultations can be made, so that you do not make the mistake of saving it the wrong way, I don't think memorizing it will be a good option for me, because at the end of the day, I might mix it up or later forget some so I feel like my memory will fail me. like that other guy said all methods have their disadvantages because you can forget. instead of this, I will maybe save it in the bank for safety keeping i can decide to claim it anytime I wish to claim it. it is information that needs to be kept away from people, if anyone gets hold of it then they have been given access.

You can have some funds on your hardware wallet or software wallet that you'd use while on a vacation or business trip to a foreign country. You don't need to be carrying your seed phrase around and I strongly kick against it. Having your seed phrase somewhere very safe doesn't stop you from accessing and spending your funds. So if you find yourself in some kind of trouble and you need to access your Bitcoin to pay for the services of a lawyer, you can still do that.

Best way to store up your seed phrase?

You could be having tons of options;

•Hardware wallet
•Flash drive
•Piece of paper

Its up to you on how you would really be making yourself that keep those private key into safe place.
People do usually lose up their coins because they had just lost up their keys and their storage and ended up on
losing the coins in the void.

So far i have just make use of a air-gaped laptop on storing up my coins and never intended to be connected into the internet.
Its really up to you on how you do keep your coins into safety.

Avoids trouble and use any other means of safer transactions. Consistency is the key and we will gladly stay focused on making huge sums at our ends. You made the appropriate answer to OP question, just have to contribute more because the space is complex and there's always hurdles on the path of these investors. Storing our seed phrases shouldn't be something we should be arguing about because the system comes with surprising results.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the copy of a seed phrase intended as a backup recovery method if something happens to your main wallet?  Hardware wallets can provide good security for everyday use, but we still need to think carefully about how to store that seed phrase securely in case it's ever needed.  Hardware wallets are not designed for this purpose, imo.

Imagine if you lived in Dubai which just had a great flooding event.
There is little to no time to react in such a natural disaster, so many people lost everything or almost everything.

If you had only a physical backup of your seedphrase it would be washed away in the flood and lost forever along with your hardware wallet and stored funds.
If I lived in an area known for natural disasters I would consider keeping a backup online. Every year many people lose their homes to wildfires in California for example.

There are ways to do this relatively safely as suggested previously (ie: passphrases, mixing up two or more words, encrypted Microsoft pdf files, etc.).
This may not be for everyone but could be an option for some.

Storing seed phrases online is never recommended as its risks are greater than storing them offline. But the example you gave also shows that there are also unforeseen risks when we store offline. Nothing is 100% perfect and each method will have advantages and disadvantages. So in my opinion, let's make choices that are suitable for the area we live in. If you live in an area prone to storms and natural disasters, physical storage is not really as safe as you mentioned. But if you choose an online solution, you also need to consider it because being attacked by hackers is also a huge risk and there have been many cases, so most people do not like this method.

Were skyscrapers flooded in Dubai? Are you sure? Because most people live there. Anyway, if someone lives in an area where there is a risk of flood and they live in a house with one or two floor, they should have a different plan. I think that every case is very individual. My plan doesn't include flood because I am not in a dangerous zone, I don't have to worry about earthquake too but I have different threats. So, like I said, every case is individual.

Encrypting a PDF file and uploading it somewhere is not a good idea either but if one has to choose between losing coins or uploading it somewhere, I would upload. But one has to be very careful with it.

This is actually a good example why having a lot of backups is important. But I wouldn't say that a cloud backup is recommended because of this. If someone who's into that situation and you're in your house, you'd get your back up as soon as possible because you've placed it on a safe place where it won't be washed away by the flood. It takes time until the flood goes up and resurface to the high place where you've placed your hardware or the seed itself. So it varies per situation but if you're saying that keeping a back up online is a solution, it's not really a good idea IMHO even if you're in a situation where disasters are more often. Try to do something like making a dogtag where you'd place it on an area where you can take it away with you asap.

There are ways to do this relatively safely as suggested previously (ie: passphrases, mixing up two or more words, encrypted Microsoft pdf files, etc.).

Encrypting it on a pdf file or any word file isn't really a choice for me or anything that I'd store online. This is your wealth that you'll keep so if you have no other option then it's just best to store your wealth on fiat and deposit it on the bank than to do these solutions that you're having.

Not sure whether its the best way or not but for storing my SEED phrase I use both primitive and digital techniques.

Primitive technique relies on both pen&paper  and metal washers encoded in  a watch dial manner. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5489238.msg63846000#msg63846000) .

Regarding  the digital technique, I use the combination of pgp hardware key/smart card and Tail OS on bootable flash drive. More on this is here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5493569.msg63973227#msg63973227).

Losing a private key is certainly something we don't want because losing a private key is the same as losing all assets. So it is very important before investing in Bitcoin, whether in small or large amounts, we first learn about wallet security, such as storing private keys to keep them safe. Because many beginners think this is trivial, it's not surprising that many lose their bitcoins because they can't access them anymore.

I'm most worried about fires. I think what you say is very true, we should keep some backups of our initial phrases in several places including by engraving them on metal but for me cryptotags provide more security in the form of almost double the melting point of titanium with stainless steel in it in the event of a fire . Storing seed phrases online is risky, even if you don't want to bother engraving them on metal, at least store seed phrases offline, this will protect our assets from hackers.

There are single story homes in Dubai. If you lived in the lower floors of a high rise structure you would not be protected from the waters.
Flooding is not the only risk when you live in a skyscraper there is also the ever present risk of fire.

Of course the risk of fire exists no matter what kind of structure you live in.

File encryption is just one layer of security. When combined with a passphrase it would be pretty much impossible for anyone to access your funds.
I would never store a plain seedphrase online without any kind of encryption or other security measures.

Except another thing you could do is make a fake seedphrase as bait, or many fake seedphrases.

The first option sounds pretty solid to me. Splitting the seed phrase across different banks and adding a passphrase for the hardware wallet adds extra security layers. The second option is okay too, but be cautious with sharing USB drives to avoid increasing the risk.

Actually, saving the Seed phrase depends on each individual because he is the one who knows the safe place for himself. Apart from that, residential areas that are prone to natural disasters are also an independent indicator in choosing the safest storage place.

All members in this forum have expressed their respective opinions regarding the safest storage of seed phrases. We just have to choose according to the method we have. In essence, no matter how secure the wallet we choose is, no matter how safe the place we store the seed phrase is, if we are careless in protecting it, the assets will still be lost. Therefore, guard the Seed Phrase like guarding your own life, be careful and always be alert to unwanted things.

Their is no need of splting the seedphrase and keeping it in a different location because sometimes things occur that you can just forget or something happens which you won't be able to get access to it. I believe when a seedphrase is being taking care of very well and placed in a secure place it is safe, but splitting it in a different location I think you will have a lot of works to do to make sure you don't forget these location.

Having the complete seedphrase in same location is even more safe than having it different location.  Sometimes we may be thinking we are trying to give the best security but instead just making things very complicated.

I believe as an investor many don't have just one wallet, people do have several wallets. Just imagine all the seedphrase of these wallets are splitted and kept in a different place, don't you think if you are not very careful it can be very confusing by missing everything up. Store your wallet seedphrase that will be simple for you but very difficult for other people to get access to it.

Saving your seed phrase on an hardware wallet is the best by any means but the pattern that should be the best is engraving it on a wood or metal making it look like a signature , an italicized writeup and then beautify it and keep it in your home like a photo frame, if you did not tell anybody they would not know, people visiting or even family members will think it's an art work to beautify your home, you can have several of them kept in various rooms or anywhere you want to keep it .

If we are looking for a best means of saving our seeds, then we must also consider how we could go about having this under a controlled privacy environment, whereby we are the only one to have access to seeing it and where its been stored, some will even go to the extend of using laminated sheet or engraved metallic sheet in saving their seeds, we should remember that using the online means should be completely avoided because its not safe

Mate this question you asked if really one factor that affects the physical aspect of securing our seed phrase.I came across a discussion in this board that talked about how we can secure our seed phrase physically in the face of natural disasters[Flood to be precise] and in the discussion the OP said our seed phrase can be encrypted on steel and titanium that can't be destroyed by water due to it's metallic properties.
