Title: [In Memoriam] Guess BTC price contest
Post by: GazetaBitcoin on December 20, 2023, 09:51:09 AM
This is a sort of unusual contest. It is held in the memory of light_warrior (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3462000). This Ukraininan forum user went on the path to light at beginning of the month (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5476972.0).

icopress made a kind gesture and tried to help light_warrior's family with some funds, but the family (the daughter, to be more precise) said that they would not need the money and suggested to use them for organizing a contest on the forum. Although icopress insisted on offering the funds collected from donations, light_warrior's daughter kept her decision.

As a consequence, this contest is one for light_warrior.

There are ~1200$ (0.02897796BTC) held by icopress in his escrow (https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/address/bc1qxxklx5evdr0vtj95c3x29ghqhqdxnd7dy0qag5) and most of this amount will represent the prize for the contest (meaning 0.025BTC; the difference will be used for paying the fees when sending the prizes). First place will take 50% (0.0125BTC), second place will take 30% (0.0075BTC) and third place will take 20% (0.005BTC).

Participants will have to predict BTC price from CoinMarketCap on January 9th, 2024, 2:54AM UTC time. The date and time correspond to first mined Bitcoin block (https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/block/1). Participants will also have to explain in a few words why they believe BTC will have the prize they predicted -- this condition is a must for the application to be considered eligible.

The winners will be the ones which will predict closest prices to BTC's price from CoinMarketCap.

Eligibility
Participants must have their accounts registered before Sept 1st, 2023 and must have at least 10 merits earned in the past 120 days.
Those with legitimate negative feedback from a DT user are not eligible (the legitimacy of the feedback is analyzed by me).
Registration with multiple accounts is forbidden. If I catch anyone trying this I will leave him a negative feedback.
Each user may make only one prediction.
Predictions can not be edited.
Applications can be submitted until Dec 25th 31st, 23:59:59 (forum time).

Good luck everybody! And, if you are so kind, please say a prayer for light_warrior.

Topic is self-moderated for avoiding spam.

This is none of my business, but I would add "light a candle if you win" (that aint complicated, and as he was a Ukrainian, most likely he followed Christianity, so finding a church wont be hard) rule in addition to explanation of prediction. Coz for someone this contest my look like making profit from someone else's misfortune...

True, it looks so; I don't feel right taking part in this contest. May be better idea would be to just return the funds to donators? Donators donated money to light_warrior (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3462000)'s family, not for the contest.

True, but it was an order from one of his family members.

Btw, I checked some charts and found it interesting that during all previous cycles on the eve of the halving, Bitcoin lost 30-60% of its value, so I think it is quite likely that in early January we will move the price in the range of 33-36 thousand. In addition, according to some analytical agencies, about 80% of all Hodlers have broken even, and many of them have started or will soon begin to take profits, so a return to 30 thousand seems quite justified to me.

Here's my prediction:

$33,420

This contest is being held on behalf of light_warrior's daughter and with money donated to her by non-caring forum users. She has decided to dispose of these donations in this way. What's the bad thing? What is wrong with the fact that his daughter decided to hold this event in memory of her father? What kind of profit-making can we talk about? It's a kind of wake she decided to organize on the forum. On a forum that took her father's passing so sympathetically.

Thank you for the nice contest, it's very kind gesture from light_warrior's family  :)

Code:
$42,100

I think that the Ordinals mess will continue to "paralyze" the whole blockchain, and then the price will maybe stay between 41 and 44k. Most people can't move their BTC out of their wallet because of high fees, and people which are "holding" it on CEXes (I mean the majority of people looking for quick profit only) are definitely waiting
the 10th of January and a potential SEC approval on a BTC ETF + maybe some of them will wait until the halving in April.

So I make the bet that BTC will stay "calm" for the next month.

Good luck everyone!
Thanks OP!   :)

I would like to thank the family of light_warrior for wanting a competition held in his name and to icopress and GazetaBitcoin for taking the initiative to initiate it according to their wishes.

The reason I chose the following amount as my entry is because I do not believe the hype that exists in several circles that Bitcoin has to increase in late December to late January. I think there will not be a case where people flood the market to buy BTC and for that reason on 9th January 2024 the price will remain somewhat less than what it is today.

Thanks to LW's daughter and family for this contest, I hope they are doing better now, of course, not to forget to thank the two of you for arranging this.

Looking at the weekly chart of BTC the nearest major resistance line is at $48,200, I believe that by January 9th we will be battling that line or at least close to it, so my prediction would be

Code:
$48,200

Good luck to everyone.

Thank you GazetaBitcoin for organizing this contest in memory of light_warrior especially to his family and daughter still want this contest.

Code:
$46,263

The price of bitcoin is always influenced by ETF news, recently bitcoin is back above $44K this may be triggered because the ETF will soon be approved in December, it is not certain because there is too much drama.

I think in January on the 10th will be the approval of the ETF, this is getting closer to this contest.
Because of the ETF news at the beginning of the month and the upcoming Halving so I took a higher price rather than a decline.

Thank you all for this, and most especially to light_warior’s daughter for wanting to do something for the community, I pray that she’ll continue to excel in all the at she does, she’ll find favour even when others are complaining of hardship, she will never lack, I also pray for divine strength in her life.

I’m not really good when it comes to price predictions but I strongly believe that the price will move in an upward direction and because of that I predict the price to be.

Bullish, I know.
Reason: SEC's approval of Bitcoin ETF could help propel the current BTC price to new heights; if those guys suddenly announce the approval of BTC ETF in the first week of January, then that would be the main catalyst to help move things upward. I also noticed that there's an accumulation of BTC before the Chinese New Year. Also, BTC halving is just 100+ days to go; that could also be a factor for more people accumulating BTC.
While the current transaction fees are a hindrance, I think that only affects small traders; Whales, on the other hand, don't really care about the BTC fees.

If this is the family's decision, we would like to thank you and we will make sure everything goes well in memory of Light_warrior

Predictions!? I'm terrible at these things, but I'll accept the challenge. I think the price will now become a little more stable in the coming weeks. At the end of the year, people who are less dedicated to business have a lot of expectations about this ETF. If it weren't for the high rates being charged, I would even say that the price would drop further, but if so, I believe it would be around 40k.

And now it turns out that this will be a BTC price contest.

I invest for the long term and what volatility does in the short term does not usually concern me much because it is unpredictable (with certainty, like using an algorithm).

Simply from the experience I have of following markets and the Bitcoin price I would say the price will then be around $47.5K.

Thanks to icopress, GazetaBitcoin and especially light_warrior's daughter.

To be honest, I am surprised and a little bit concerned about such a decision made by light_warrior`s daughter. Maybe she didn't feel like she could use that money, like they didn't belong to her. However, that what she decided and I respect her choice.

I believe, that in the next couple of days we will see a little bit of growth. But during New Year`s holidays trading volume will decrease, leading to price rejection. My prediction is

True, but it was an order from one of his family members.
I want to thank @light_warriors' daughter for giving us, the forum members, a chance to remember one of our own. May his soul rest in peace.

Lately, I've been checking out discussions about past Bitcoin halvings, and I've noticed a trend. Some months before the halving, the price tends to dip, followed by a significant positive move just before settling. This has happened before during previous halving cycles, and I'm seeing it again. In early November, Bitcoin's price went from the 25-30k range to gradually reach 39k by month end. It moved to 40k in December and has stayed between 40-45k. Based on this, I think we might see a steady range of 42-45k until late January, just before moving upwards again before the halving takes place.

Before every  Bitcoin halving, there's usually more talk and excitement in the market. This excitement often leads to a rise in Bitcoin's price because more investors want to buy enough Bitcoins before the halving event. So, considering this historical pattern, here's my prediction.

Quote
44500$

That's touching honestly and thanks to all of the folks involved on this contest, lw's family, gazeta and icopress.

We've just broken the walls of $44k but then the market corrected so I think with few days remaining, this is possible to happen that we may see this price prediction that I've got. So, it's like a slow motion but possibly that it's gonna move to the next barrier of $45k, more FOMO gonna happen as January comes because of the close door meeting of BlackRock and SEC.

My price prediction:

$44,400

Maybe he's daughter think that support to his father and good messages she read here is enough for them that's why they decide to give back to the community as to show their appreciation to this community.

Rest in peace to Light_warrior.

Also thanks for people who exert this effort to reach a financial support for light_warrior's family.

Allow me to edit by submission to write my reason on why choose this price.

This is the nearest figure we can possibly reach at said timeline and there's huge possibilities that we can see this to happen since I believe halving hype is much stronger at at that time compare for current market condition.

The price of Bitcoin might not be correctly predicted by checking historical charts because we have never been in this present situation before (spot Bitcoin ETF). The awareness brought by the ETF will keep making the market unpredictable. If the SEC approves any of the applications will might see a rise while the price will drop if it is unapproved. My prediction will be $46,000 because there are greater chance that it will be approved.

I'm not an expert in TA, but I only used 2 indicators to come up with that price. Fibonacci Retracement, and 21 Weekly Simple Moving Average. Wait I also used support and resistance as well. After all, it's a prediction contest, so good luck to all of us participants

Never knew the guy, but I truly feel sad for him and his family. Screw pathetic Putin! Also, it's really weird that she didn't accept the donations, but it's her choice at the end of the day. She is not alone since this forum is with her and I guess she knows that now.

Coming to the contest, I feel it would have been better to split the amount among 10 winners or something which would have made more people happier since it's Christmas season after all.

Anyway, I am expecting SEC to approve an ETF sometime later which is why my prediction is bearish.

Prediction: $41,673

December uses to be a great month for the price, but I have the feeling the end of the year is usually open for speculation, that can go to a unnatural direction. And since the halving is near, the unnatural direction is downwards.

PS. I find a bit unusual the high prize and the fact light_warrior's daughter didn't want it.
PPS. Whether I win or not, I will still light a candle for light_warrior's soul. RIP.

My prediction is:

Code:
$41.325

A slightly correction it seems - but it's not a bad idea to accept due to saturation and some other reasons. But I don't think we'll get anything under $40K by then - hopefully not.

Previously - I have expressed my condolences for the death of light_warrior, of course this is sad news. But one thing makes me wonder - his daughter rejected the forum user's donations and chose to give back to the user in a different way. This contest is dedicated to him - of course.

icopress - really, that's a shocking news this is. I saw it was last active on December 03, 2023, 09:55:25 PM - that's a few days ago and certainly not that long ago. I convey my condolences to him and hope that his family will be given fortitude and strength after his passing.

I don't know what the cause of death was [maybe illness?] - but this is surprising news considering light_warrior was here a few days ago.

RIP for light_warrior.

Big respect to the family member that preferred to use the money for a contest. I didn't know we lost a forum member, may God bless his soul.

Disclaimer: I'm a terrible predictor.

In last year, we moved from $16k to $20k, which was a nice ride; people forgot about FTX and moved on. In January 2022, we fell from $47k to $43k, and then we plummeted. Things were bearish for a whole year at least. In the last few months we have experienced very good levels, from $20k to $40k. I personally don't mind if it drops by a 10%, so I'll just say that with fingers crossed.

I would like to thank the Light_Warrior family for this event in memory of him, as well as everyone involved for the initiative.

I waited a long time for a correction, because after such significant growth it seemed logical to me. But it seems that in anticipation of the approval of the Bitcoin spot ETF, the price holds some levels very well, and it is possible that this will continue until there is a decision on their approval, and this is expected at the beginning of January. So I will assume that by this time the price should not change much.

My prediction:

It's always sad to have contact with someone's death, even if it was virtual like this.

I'm not a super predictor, especially when I'm biased and want something to go in only one direction. And the fact is that I hope for a drop in the price of Bitcoin, but it will probably be the opposite.
I think that January is the time when the demand for cryptocurrencies decreases so there is always a correction. Some important things were announced on Jan. 10. maybe they won't be so drastic.
So, my prediction is:

Code:
$41823.00

Thank you all which participated so far in this contest. I understand those which said that it just does not feel right. You are right... I'll be honest and I'll tell you that also posting this topic did not feel right. I can't express the feeling I had when I posted this contest. But then I thought that in this way I may fulfill a wish of someone which is living a deep pain now. At least, I could help fulfilling this wish. Because for this wish to come true, besides organizing a contest, participants also had to show up. So in this way all participants also gave a hand of help in fulfilling the wish of light_warrior's daughter. Perhaps this is the lest we can do here...

It's a very sad moment. If we feel sad for him just imagine what his daughter is feeling right now... This is why I thank to all which enrolled already in this contest and I thank in advance to those which will enroll in the following days.

Btw, If I may, I would like to propose extending the submission of applications until December 31st.

Since the contest was made for fulfilling a wish of someone which is in deep suffering, I see no reason for not extending the application until Dec 31, end of day, forum time. Unless there will be objections to this change, applications are open until then...

We must fulfill the wish of daughter light_warrior. I think he will continue the battle for goodness and light in heaven.

Despite the fact that halving awaits us and there are just over 100 days left before it, I still think that before a significant and sharp leap upward (towards a new ATH in 2024), BTC will make a very slight decline in the coming weeks, which will coincide with the date 7 January.

Since the contest was made for fulfilling a wish of someone which is in deep suffering, I see no reason for not extending the application until Dec 31, end of day, forum time. Unless there will be objections to this change, applications are open until then...

As there were no objections so far, application period is officially extended until Dec 31, end of day (forum time). The information was also added to OP.

Good luck, everybody!
So can we change submission ??! ::)

I think that despite the extension we can't change our prediction.  :D

^^ My prediction, even with the ETF approval next year, bitcoin price will not surge directly but will remain near the current price till January.

Please add some explanation as to why you picked that price. It's a requirement that has been posted in the OP.
Participants will also have to explain in a few words why they believe BTC will have the prize they predicted -- this condition is a must for the application to be considered eligible.
My prediction:

$43,650.15

I assume the price will hover around the $43k level as more people continue to increase their Bitcoin savings due to the halving being only a few months away.

Indeed, the extension of the applications did not imply anything about the possibility of editing the post.

Deleting the old post and making a new one was not forbidden in the existing rules, thus it can be done. It's not exactly something in the spirit of the contest, but since it was not forbidden from the beggining, you can do it, if you really feel like doing it...

Good evening, it's a bit of a strange contest.

If I ever win something, I'll put the prize away because lightwarrior's daughter has every right to change her mind, in emotion she may consider money is nothing. But maybe she'll need it later and, in the end, the donors had planned to help her (and the family of lightwarrior). If so, whenever, just let me know. At the same time, my intuition isn't always very reliable, either for predictions or for anything else.

My prediction is 45,015 dollars, because it's my feminine intuition and there's no other reason.

It's a really sad occasion for a giveaway but the fact that light_warrior's daugther has decided to do it, is a really humble decision.  :)

About a price prediction: it's always difficult, even just a few days but let's be bullish on this one.
Bitcoin is having a great year so far, few days remaining and early January next year could be even more positive in case of an ETF approval (seems to be likely).
Halving will be next.
I'm expecting more FOMO of course.  ;)
My prediction:

Code:
46,900 USD

My condolences to anyone who has been affected by this tragic event. In particular I hope the very best for light_warrior's daughter. Having to suffer from what is going on in their home country is probably more than the average human being can reasonably cope with, but losing loved ones during times of darkness and sadness is even worse. Also, my best regards to the forum member who accommodated light_warrior and his daughter since the time of the invasion.

Code:
$$42,725.50

Giving the reason for the prediction is contradictory to my take on price predictions in general :) that's why I can't provide a very sophisticated answer here. I don't expect too much price action in either direction and hence went with the price that I just looked up.

My prediction is 54,666 BTC.

I think the bitcoin price will skyrocket around that date because bitcoin ETF will most likely be approved during that time and the HYPE it will cause for bitcoin investors.
ETF for bitcoin will most likely be approved around the 10th of Jan (most likely and I could be wrong in this guess)

To be honest, I am not good at predicting Bitcoin in the near future, but I have a strong belief that Bitcoin will reach a new ATH after the halving occurs.

But considering that next year's ETF approval will take place in January, I don't think the price of bitcoin will immediately rise that month and will not fall below $40k.
So, my prediction

$$43,890.81

Here is my prediction although I don't think my speculation would be anywhere close but still I would like to keep a positive notion to it

Code:
 $$ 44,200.50

And once again my deepest condolences to the Ukrainian community and also to the family of light_warrior. May your journey on the great beyond an easy and blissful one. RIP LIGHT_WARRIOR

First of all, Thanks for this contest.
Thank you, Light Warrior, for your contribution. The forum will miss you. Stay well.

My predicted price is
Code:
$44550

Here is why; Bitcoin has already touched the 44K price range, and it is down a little for now. Since ETF approvals are awaiting, we may see some movements in the market. I don't know much about it. Since the ETF approval estimated after January 9, it won't affect much. So, I will pick 44550 as my prediction.

My prediction is that :

January will probably be a bullrun until February because the Apple Vision Pro is released, and at the end of February we will enter the bitcoin halving phase.

Thank you for the nice table Woodie! It may help a lot!

I'll also take this opportunity for making a prediction: $44,100.05

I believe BTC price will continue a slowly ascending path, as halving date keeps getting closer and closer. Perhaps it won't soar over the night but it'll keep a slow, but steady, ascension.

Rest In Peace light_warrior, you have a big contribution in this forum, you will be missed. :)

I also want to thank people who're associated in this contest (light_warrior's family, GazetaBitcoin, and icopress)

My prediction: $40,000

Bitcoin's price is keep rising, so I expect a downturn due to volatility, Bitcoin price will not always increase or vice versa.

Rest in peace Light_warrior!
Hopefully the family left behind will be given fortitude and patience for his passing, especially for the daughter of the deceased.

My prediction:

Code:
Prediction 45,771.54

My reason is because if we count backwards, we have 10 more days to wait for ETF approval, so I think this will be good news before we enter the Bitcoin Halving which is only a few months away.

I hope light_warrior rests in peace and I wish his daughter the same heavenly peace to soon return to her home country!

My prediction:

Code:
Prediction 43,520.55

I am getting push notifications about rumors regarding the ETF approval, but it is hard to say how much the market will still react to it. I predict a small uptick when the approval comes beginning of January.

Holidays are over and halving is near so I'm expecting a downtrend but there are buzz around ETF so my guess the price would tiptoe between 40K and 45K hence:

My prediction:

Code:
Prediction $43,111,11

Rest In Peace light_warrior and I sincerely hope the year 2024 will be good to his family 🙇

Condolences to the light_warrior family , the forum morns with you , RIP🕯️🕊️

We are in the festive season and at the moment markets aren't as active as we would want them which tells me price will be ranging and dancing sideways aka consolidation, with that been said my price prediction is in line with being bearish and this might continue for the next 2 weeks before momentum comes in to push price up. My prediction 👇👇👇

Code:
$41325

Bulls🐮 vs Bears 🐻

After winning first place here, I would like to donate my win to an Ukrainian aid campaign, organized by forum member @derBowler (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5387906.0).
So, funds will "stay" in Ukraine to help Ukrainians. I believe that purpose is a good one in memory of light_warrior.
Previously, I've translated the topic of @derBowler's charity here: derBowler's project: using Bitcoin to help Ukrainians (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5405839.0)
Unfortunately, the recent picture ban has also affected that topic but some pictures are still available, like here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5405839.msg61458334#msg61458334).

Original German topic is available here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5387906.0), where I've just written an announcement (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5387906.msg63488656#msg63488656) if his recent address is still active.
I'll PM you soon about sending the funds, GazetaBitcoin.

Congrats to all winners as well and many thanks @GazetaBitcoin and @icopress for your organizing effort.  :)

If @icopress hadn't sent me a PM regarding the contest, I would not have known that there would be a contest like this. Thanks to you. :)
Also, thanks to @GazetaBitcoin for organizing the contest. I did thank you through PM, but still, I want to say it here in public. Of course to light_warrior's daughter for choosing to share the donations to different users here. She might not see this one, but I'll pray for light_warrior, and his family as well. Wishing all the best for them, and again, the whole forum is sending our condolences to the whole family.

If only there's no important event that will happen next week (my wedding), I would donate the whole winnings to different dog shelters here in my place because I've been, and will always be a dog lover. I guess I'll do it in the next weeks through my signature campaign earnings. :) You can just ignore this one. I just shared a bit of my life.

Anyway, thanks to all participants, organizers, and those who are involved in this contest. Congratulations to us winners. My condolences again to @light_warrior.

Congratulations to all the winners, and the organization of the event.

I think it was a good tribute/memorial to @light_warrior made by the family and this forum.

Big hug to everyone.

That is very decent decision. As a Ukrainian, I can say how important this help is for us. For example, today's morning once again began from missile attack all over the country, I had to hide in the shelter with my baby for several hours. But knowing that there are people, especially not only from Ukraine, but also from other states,  who really care, even though this is not their war directly, is really helpful and it gives a lot of hope and strengths for me personally, and helps to survive this horror. I am sure, light_warrior would be grateful to you, because he also cared a lot about the well-being of Ukrainian people. Thank you!

This is an incredibly nice gesture, 1miau! I, for one, feel very touched... I take my hat off in front of your gesture.

Besides, thank you all which expressed nice words above. I read all posts and such words are moving. May this contest bring a short smile on light_warrior's daughter...

Friends Hello everyone! Thank you for taking part in this competition.

I just processed payments.

Code:
Ajiz: 0.008BTC
LogitechMouse: 0.008BTC
1miau/derBowler's project: 0.013BTC

It seems I accidentally sent 8mBTC to the user who took 3rd place.

No refund is required, I will simply assume that 2nd and 3rd place received 30% of the total fund.

Congrats to all the winners though @1miau deserves first position thanks to his philanthropic efforts. He basically diverted the money from one Ukraine citizen to another in epic fashion. Salute @1miau!

While some such incidents can happen sometimes (and usually they are not very fortunate for the ones mistaking), I think this is a very nice gesture from icopress and the winners can be even more happy for taking part in this contest :) Big thumb up for icopress' decision!

Such people are more and more rare in our days... It is really to be admired what he did!
